Small or Far Away – Father Dougal on Cows
Hi Everybody!
This is gonna be a short one, since I had to work over the weekend and lost both time and energy to that. Blargh. The good news: this is the first week of cow growth projections! Let the pigeons loose! I broke my rule and did all the cows with 4 matches even though I usually wait for 5. Seems like a thing in the short season. Anyways, much as I wanted to have things to say about the cows, this is the most boring crop of cows ever. At least this week. Rowell is so good there is nothing I can add. The rest are all creeping up slowly and most of them have one big week of growing left before slowing down. Writing that here saves me doing it in a whole lot of write ups below.
Let’s see, what else can I write about with a tired brain….Oh, well, I am happy to announce I am beginning to enjoy the season, finally. All the “stuff” just made everything feel blah and frustrating, and last and this week I feel like I’m playing Supercoach more properly and have interesting decisions to make, and the blah is fading. So, if you have stuck with it, good on ya and keep going. We’re doomed to more weird but we’re all in the weird together for a change. As someone who is often all alone in the weird, It’s nice to have company!
Next week I plan to give explanations of the projections, add the cows who hit their 4th game, and hopefully have something more useful on strategy. This week’s strategy thoughts are that I really think last week’s Max Value stuff really matters. Value and cash making first and foremost. Ok, I’m in danger of blithing and better shut up soon. You don’t think I’m the type that would keep on blabbin’? Some people never know when to stop. When I’m told to shut up, I shut up…
Defenders
Starcevich: One of the best on field cows. At this point he looks like someone you can upgrade later since he is scoring ok. Of course he also will be worth more when cashed in.
Noble: If he keeps this up, he should make another 40k bring him up to a profit of 100k in a few weeks. But, things are not the same, Howe is now out. I don’t think that is going to hurt Noble’s scoring. I suspect it won’t help him a lot either but you never know and it’s not like he needs to go now anyway. I’d be slow to cash him in this week, although most managers will have, um, other defensive issues to deal with ahead of him this week, making that moot.
Brander: His Fwd/Def DPP has been way useful and he is making some money. Given how the Eagles are doing, that is actually impressive. If the Eagles lift, he might too.
Midfielders
Brown: He was looking at leaving the best 22 because of Treloar coming back, and then Sidebottom goes and gets in some strife! Hard to say how long he will last, but even one more week would be great.
Rowell: I almost left him out on the grounds he is not a cow, but, no matter how well he is doing now he is still a first season 18 year old, and so I’m gonna try and keep that in mind even as the odds of him winning the Brownlow keep dropping. Smarter people have pointed out that he could well fade as the season goes on, in which case his projections will become relevant. Also, if he does get tagged and that is not just blowing smoke, he could have issues and again, projections matter. At the moment it is hard to imagine culling him. I ended up with the C on him last week, so, yeah, he is a bit unusual…..
Rucks
Pittonet: Well, he has not played 4, but he is the only ruck cow so I included him anyways. If you think he can keep up scoring it is not too late to bring him in. Not ideal but not too late. He’d have to stay at about 110 for that to be true, or at last have a big score. Another 135+ will really pump him up. I have vague thoughts of keeping him a while, although that is pretty optimistic.
Forwards
Budarick: He’s kinda boring all right. Making some cash, nice DPP.
King: At some point he is going to put up a big score, and then he will make some cash. He’s just creeping up right now.
Taylor: Started great, last two slow. Not the way to go for money making. That’s backwards for money making in fact; ideally the big scores come later. Hopefully he’ll get that mojo back.
Other non-cow stuff
Did that already!

Thanks Father Dougal.
I always look forward to Cow Talk.
Great write up, FD.
Unsure when to cash in on Pittonet, got him at R3. Doubt he keeps going at 134, so I’m tempted to go early on him next week for a premo upgrade and give myself a competitive edge. His fixture makes it hard to decide though; Saints, Swans, Suns. Marshall/Ryder and Witts probably get the better of him, but he should be able to pop off v a Naismith-less Swans.
Hmm.
With Naismith out, he’s my R2 for the forseeable future. Got bigger problems to solve at the moment!
I’ve got him at R3 as well, and he was primarily brought in to make money. Obviously injuries and other stuff will come up, but I’m thinking of holding for 2-3 weeks – unless he has another sub-100 score or another 120+ score.
Great stuff, FD! Supercoach is a tough game sometimes – Taylor had a set shot at goal that probably would’ve won North the game. If the ball had floated right instead of left he might have pushed 90, instead of the blah 50-odd he actually got.
Anyone else think he was harshly scored as well? Had 7 marks with two of them contested. 11 touches 3 contested. Granted 54% isn’t great but only 1 turnover. 4 score involvements and 1 goal. I felt his score didn’t really move for a while despite contested marks etc. it seems to be the surname or a man bun help scores more than actual actions on the field sometimes
Always love cow talk. Great read FD.
