Defender TLAs Batch #4

Written by Father Dougal on February 12 2020

Hi Everybody!

Here is the fourth batch of defenders. Again, this is just my personal guessing, and not anything derived from math.

Darcy Byrne-Jones

Year Games Average Age TLA
2016 20 63.8 20
2017 22 64.4 21
2018 21 71.8 22
2019 22 87.2 23 87
86-94 88

At 24 he is not too old to have a breakout season. He is certainly durable, unless I just cursed him, and has shown steady improvement. The main reason not to pick him as a breakout candidate is all the others.

Zac Jones

Year Games Average Age TLA
2014 4 34 18
2015 9 47.6 19
2016 14 56.4 20
2017 21 83.1 21 83
2018 18 79.6 22 84
2019 17 85.7 23 85
83-90 86

Well….He looks better than I thought he would. Only 24, like DBJ above. Less durable. Similar outlook.

Jason Johannisen

Year Games Average Age TLA
2012 3 60 19
2013 13 64.5 20
2014 11 64.1 21
2015 20 77.5 22
2016 13 94.4 23 85
2017 20 82 24 85
2018 22 85.8 25 85
2019 19 84.4 26 85
82-89 85

At this point we know pretty much just what he will do. There is no reason to start with him. He often drops in price a lot and can be picked up by the desperate at the end of the season, cheaply.  Don’t ask me how I know that.

Harris Andrews

Year Games Average Age TLA
2015 19 64.2 18
2016 17 65.5 19
2017 22 69.1 20
2018 18 88.4 21 85
2019 19 82.7 22 85
81-89 85

Wow, another possible breakout bloke, but his being 23 gives him a bit of an edge on Darcy B. and Zac Jones. Still he went backwards last year, which is not a good sign.

Heath Shaw

Year Games Average Age TLA
2005 6 72 19
2006 21 100.7 20
2007 22 106.3 21
2008 18 91.5 22
2009 18 94.7 23
2010 19 90.2 24
2011 14 100.9 25 100
2012 18 101.2 26 100
2013 19 96.9 27 100
2014 18 92.6 28 100
2015 22 112.6 29 100
2016 22 106 30 100
2017 22 83.3 31 85
2018 20 90.7 32 85
2019 22 82.6 33 85
75-83 78

Has a career year at 29, then dropped off a bit at 30, and got hit by a beer truck playing Frogger at 31. If you are not a relative or having relations with him, there is no excuse for his being in your team.

Callum Mills

Year Games Average Age TLA
2016 20 77.2 18 76
2017 22 73.3 19 77
2018 9 79 20 78
2019 22 81.8 21 79
78-85 80

Remarkable run of early scoring, although the lack of improvement is a bit worrying. He will be 22, and could do anything from break out to spud out. Unless new info shows up he seems like a poor risk.

Adam Saad

Year Games Average Age TLA
2015 16 78 20 73
2016 10 70.1 21 74
2017 22 72.7 22 75
2018 22 75.1 23 77
2019 21 81.7 24 79
78-85 81

It is interesting how his fast start never turned into anything, and he is barely above his 20 year old average at 24. It seems like we know what he can do, and that is not enough to be in our teams.

    1. Me too. Will be interesting to see what effect a fit Ryan BURTON and/or Sam MAYES will have on his output, if any.

      1. my old dad gets down to Alberton training when he can, in 2 of the 3 sessions he’s seen DBJ has been heavily involved in midfield drills/set plays… doubt this means much till the Marsh series begins, but some extra midfield minutes would likely be good?

      2. DBJ Scores Post round 8:

        Without Burton: 102.7
With Burton (excl. 7 vs NM): 102.7

Don’t think Burton made a difference. That 7 versus North is the real concern – was he sick/playing injured or did he legit breakout last year?
