Discussion: Rookies, Team Sheets, & One Day’s Notice.

Written by The Salamander on March 15 2021

With the teams for each game to be announced just one day beforehand this season, knowing which rookies to start in Round 1 becomes that much more difficult.

We dealt with this situation last year, but not during Round 1. We also don’t have all those extra trades this time around.

Roo Bloke wants to know what you’re planning on doing about all this. As would I… [nervous salamander noises]

  1. Fantasy football players are one of the AFL’s most engaged segments yet could they give a stuff about us? The introduction of this new rule demonstrates exactly how they feel. This is going to be a disaster for SC coaches.

Other than some additional flexibility in case we all end up in COVID hell again, there is harm in naming teams on Thursday nights like they’ve always done.

    I’m furious about this.

    1. I know how you feel Motts. On the other hand I always like SC the more random crap there is to check and keep track of. The added complexity of team line-ups should make for some neat emergent problem-solving down the track which I find is half the fun of the whole season!!

  2. Round 1 will be fine. Coaches have started making rookie announcements already. We may not have entire teams, but we should have a fair idea of who’s lining up by Thursday night.

The tricky part comes after that. How long do our cash cows hang on? When do players get rested (and make no mistake, they will be)? When do injured players return? I think everyone is going to need a plan A, B, C and probably D when it comes to trades each week.

    1. I think that’s a bigger issue that catches you out WHEN you are forced into making last minute selections because of the lack of clarity about team lineups.

Once you are forced into taking guys you haven’t researched as thoroughly because of last minute changes you really don’t have as clear a picture of who they are replacing in best 22, why, and for how long.

There is limited time to research and limited information storage capacity.

TBH, this is where a few more cow like objects and a bit more job security starts to be a major factor… and a major factor into the hazardous slide into midpriced madness.

  3. Just make sure you’ve got some extra cash up your sleeve this year, as you’ll likely end up selecting a $200k-$250k player that you don’t have, in place of a rookie that doesn’t come to fruition.

I’d suggest you’d want at least $150k available before teams drop, with the intention of having, maybe $50k after the end of R1. Otherwise, you’ll end up compromising one of your premium selections to find the cash.

  4. This is where I am considering overloading my team with a couple of midpricers that I feel are capable of making me money like a rookie, to help counteract whether they will play or not as they will be more certain.
If it fails I’ll likely bring in a rookie for a midpricer, but then upgrade another for a premo.
Current midpricers I’m looking at are POD’s and they are Bailey, Brodie and Hind as Bailey spent a fair bit of time in CBA’s and Rayner is out. Brodie was 400k+ last season but now 345k so can make me money. Hind spent heaps of time in half back but is a SC FWD at 330k.
It really risky and could be playing catch up all season, but I’m in for this risk! Bring on another season!

  5. Do we still get 2 weeks for price changes? It reverted to one last year, has it gone back to two ?

    1. From the rules of Supercoach
“Each player’s price will vary based on their most current performance from round to round. A rolling average is used to determine how a player’s value changes and they must have played at least 3 games in order for their value to increase or decrease. Your team value is determined based on the overall value of your selected players, plus any leftover amount in your salary cap.”

  6. I think it is important to back the research, on whether the player is going to play early, if not round 1 and when he does will score well and go with that selection above frantic changes on the first weekend.

    1. Easy to say that, and in theory I agree… but facing 3 on field donuts come saturday night you tend to change your priorities

  7. The “Concussion sub” is going to be another Supercoach nightmare especially now discussions are continuing with expanding the criteria for substituting players for injuries as well.

A final decision will be made Tuesday morning but is highly likely the concussion sub will be implemented just whether it will be an injury sub instead.

Having your player sitting on bench in a vest all day and coming on for an injury(?) in the last quarter and scoring buggar all points. We all know how the sub was exploited when it was last used. Fair enough if it is for a valid reason. It is not fair for the player missing a game which he could be showing his worth of getting a game in the seniors.
Making decisions on the run never work out well. They should have rescinded the new rotation cap for this season while there is still some uncertainty around with covid and not bring back the sub.

    1. They better not bring this back! Sadly the way it goes this game will never be the same, change by change every year will occur, ruining what was such a perfect game.
Supercoach is slowly becoming the only thing drawing me to the sport and this something I do not want!

      1. 100% agree. I lost patience with Steve Hocking a long time ago the whole sporting public other than the AFL can see he is the most inept human at his job there’s ever been. He’s a dead set brain dead moron. Not a single change he’s made has made the game better in fact 90% have made the game worse. He doesn’t let the game evolve naturally and does snap decisions based on little to no evidence of his solution working. Doesn’t even trial it and if he does he would ignore the evidence and implement it anyway

    2. In the end, workplace health and safety MUST come in front of whether or not it makes things more difficult for a fantasy football player.

  8. Just curious, and yes, maybe naive too, I was wondering whether all these adjustments/changes somehow have an effect (indirectly of course) to adding additional betting formats to become available for the games????

  9. The team at Supercoach are going to need to be quicker to respond to changes made by the AFL such as concussion/injury subs with their own rule changes.
Players coming on to the field late in the game and missing their breakeven just doesn’t work for us. Score adjustments anyone?

  10. Maybe the player who comes on as the concussion sub can continue scoring for the player who went down?
Not perfect, but that would take some of the luck out of the sub situation.

  11. I think I ask this every year but it gives me anxiety.

Do we have rolling unlimited trades once the first game starts, but only for those who are yet to play?

Thumbs up/down will do for the answer 🙂

  12. Perhaps an update on popular rookies who will or wont play?

Defenders I think are likely Kosi, Highmore, Butts
Highmore scored at 0.82ppm in aammi and his high de% demonstrates that he wasn’t overawed by the occasion only played a bit more than a half and is under the pump from Carlisle though.
Kositscke is filling a hole in Hawks forward line and should be safe until Gunston comes back in 4-8 weeks.
Butts did really well in aammi he scored at 0.87ppm and played much of the game with an ankle injury he picked up in the game which would usually rule him out but with Talia missing for at least 4 weeks he should get a go early.

Others who looked good but might have too much competition to be considered genuine contenders
Jones came on late in 3rd quarter and did well but ports backline is already solid and they’ve added Aliir
Gould was touted as a chance last year and never played I believe than his consistency in this area will continue
Wehr yes there holes in the giants backline but did you see how many 190+cm athletes with great skills and a few games experience they showed us in aammi?
