Fantasy Bundesliga Rd26

G’Day Coaches!

The Death Adder asked me recently on Twitter if I could give some input on the Bundesliga.  It’s a real treat for me to be contributing again in some capacity.  I hope I can be of some assistance with your fantasy teams in Germany…….

As you may already know, the Bundesliga is one of the world’s first major sporting competitions to open up after the first wave of COVID-19.  Players have been tested extensively  over the last few months and there are strict rules in place to oversee the last nine Rounds of the 19/20 Season (the major one being the lack of crowds in the stadiums for now).

Football is Religion here in Germany and honestly, the weekends here are just not the same without football.  There is no ‘foreign ownership’ of clubs in the Bundesliga, it is literally not allowed……Clubs still rely on sponsors, memberships, merchandise and a share in the tv rights to survive…….While the restrictions will hurt a lot of clubs (of course), there are many more that could go bankrupt if they were not to play at all……..

Players like Lewandowski, Werner & Gnabry are pricey for a reason and their record speaks for itself.  While I haven’t gone into too much detail for Fantasy Bundesliga, here are some players I see as good value……..

Erling Haaland (Dortmund) 14.2M, Striker

This 19-year-old Norwegian kid joined Dortmund during the Winter break and has had an immediate impact.  Simply put……he is a freakin’ goal machine!  Haaland has scored 13 goals in his first nine appearances for Dortmund (a record for a new recruit).  Amazingly he has only played four full games for Dortmund in that time due to fitness problems.  Tremendous value if fit……Only a matter of time before the big English & Spanish clubs come knocking……….

Jonas Hector (Cologne) 12.1M, Defender

Why am I taking a player from a lowly club like Cologne?  Easy…….Hector is their best player by a country mile…….So much so that he has been a constant figure in the German National team for the last five years, even when Cologne was playing in the 2nd League.  Classy defender with a devastatingly accurate left foot…….Hector is my first defender picked!

Bastian Oczipka (Schalke) 10.5M, Defender

Has been around the Bundesliga a fair bit over the years with stints at StPauli & Frankfurt.  Has really made his mark in the rejuvenation of Schalke this year under new Coach, David Wagner.  Not the best defensively, but like Hector above, has a lovely left foot cross that he puts to great use each week.  Most importantly his job security is strong as Schalke are a little weak on depth.

Erik Thommy (Dusseldorf) 8.8M, Midfielder

If you need a cheap midfielder, then Thommy is your guy!  Was quite impressive in a Stuttgart side that was relegated at the end of last season.  Luckily he got another chance at top level with Dusseldorf and has grabbed it with both hands.  Classy on both sides of the body and can sneak forward for a goal or two on a good day………

Well Coaches, hopefully you can take something away from all of this.   Good luck if you’re entering a team into the Fantasy Bundesliga competition (I believe you have until Saturday night, around 11pm Melb time)……most importantly, just appreciate the fact that we have some type of professional sport to watch again 😉  Stay safe, stay healthy!

  1. Great to have you back in any form writing for the site Schwarzy even if it is a one off on your truly favourite sport.

Schwarzy your hard work and daily AFL SuperCoach articles have been sadly missed by all that visit this site. .

Let’s be honest if you are joining now you can’t win as the Bundesliga League for this year is in its final stage as it had already kicked off before the Covid shutdown.

I am still going to have a crack and will have the honour of staving off the wooden spoon or relegation. All the players you have written about are locked and loaded in my squad.

Thanks again for taking me up on my special request after I reached out to you on Twitter.
