Final Day Nerves?

Written by Motts on March 25 2010

The day has arrived. Its time to draw back the curtain on your team. The product of all your analysis, re-analysis and in the end over-analysis over these last 6 weeks.

My boys, The Maulers, had their guernsey presentation last night at Crown. It was a very muted affair with a lot of water being drunk as I droned on about the need to focus, the pride they need to take in the jumper, the players who have gone before them, and the burning desire for success that I expected all of them to have.

I think we’ve answered every question related to team selection possible but I’m sure there will be more to come today. Post ’em in here.

Oh, and one last thing before tonight….GO YOU MIGHTY BLUE BOYS!!!!

    1. Carrazzo is the only one I’d question there, Scratcher. If he plays a tagging role it will negatively affect his numbers. And Lord knows the Blues have enough midfielders.

  2. I feel I need to take a break from here today, every time I do I make a change and then think was that right thing and then I’ll read something and my mind changes again… good side selected though it’ll be on like Donkey Kong tonight!!
Footy is back, what a great day of the year! If you truly want to see grown men excited then this is the day.

  3. Team is all sorted (barring injuries of course).

Stuck on my 4th fwd though. Still deciding between Roberts for Richmond and Hitchcock for Port. I know Roberts is playing tonight so I’m swinging towards him more. Does anyone have a preference and which one do you feel will play more?

    Good luck everyone!

        1. If Hitchcock doesn’t get named at 5pm then go Roberts – having blokes that play is the most important thing at this time of the year.

          1. I don’t know if they had the inside word or how they got their info, but on the footy show last night they named Hitchock (and Stewart) to play tonight. I wouldn’t take it as gospel, but they certainly promoted it as the official team.

  4. up late last night putting the final touches to my team. i had struggled for about 3 days getting it right and always seemed to be 100k short. now i’m happy with my team (i think!) and i have 100k spare and don’t have anyone i really want to spend it on. :/

    1. Keep looking….I find staring at your team for hours on end will create new opportunities where that money can be spent.

  5. Motts,
just wondering whether you think bernie vince is going to play or not considering he hasnt been fully training and is thought to be “underdone”.
    cheers

    1. I think he will play, but because he’s underdone I wouldn’t be picking him. There are plenty of other premium options at his price level that will score just as well.

    1. Neither should really be on your field, Cam. I still think the only starting spot a rookie should be playing in is in your midfield. Having said that, if you’re team is locked down then I’d pick Pods.

      1. in that case then should i downgrade cooney to say masten or dangerfield to upgrade the forwards? i think my team is fairly settled but i wanna make sure my team can be as good as it can be…

        0

        0
        1. OK there’s a few things you could do here, Cam. Let me put 2 options to you:

          1) downgrade to Mitch Robinson – yes its a risk because he’s been a little inconsistent in the past but his preseason was great and he looks set for a big one. That then gives you ~$210k to upgrade your last forward spot which should buy you something nice. (I don’t know about Dangerfield tho’ – certainly didn’t impress me in the NAB series).

          2) go another rook in the midfield. Yes this is probably even riskier but you’ve got to have a crack sometimes to separate yourself from the pack. Trengove or Scully are going to play all year (if you haven’t already got him though I’d take T over S). You’ll get a higher value gain on a midfielder than a rookie forward given the amount of possessions they are more likely to get which sets you up better for the future. And you’ll be able to pick up an even better forward with the extra $ you pick up from the middle downgrade. Does this make sense?

          1. how does trengove martin and banner sound on the field? with ablett bartel and ball?

            this is my new team:

DEF: Goddard, enright, h.shaw, hodge, gilbee, gram, waters EMG: macguirie, trengove

MIDS: ablett, bartel, ball, trengove, martin, banner, EMG: barlow, bastinac

RUCKS: tippett, nic nat EMG: warnock, lobbe

FWDS: riewoldt, j.brown, higgins, franklin, cloke, ziebel, walker EMG: pods and hitchcock

            THoughts?

    1. Goyne is gone. Don’t touch him.

Couldn’t tell you about Buckley. Any of you Collingwood supporters out there want to weigh in on this one?

      1. I’m a Pies man and I honestly don’t think he will be in our best 22. He will play between 5 and 10 games i reckon, but he isn’t gonna play enough for your supercoach team.

      2. buckley wont play much…mick will play reid down back before buckley plays…and considering he is not much of a ball carrier we allready have harry o goldensack maxwell n weather dids plays off the half back line with shaw…

  6. Where did the “The Footy Show” get them teams from (can’t found them anywhere) and then they Flash them up for 2 seconds so you only see half the side.

          1. No its a new thing they’ve implemented this year. And thank God they have – trying to pick a team when the AFL coaches hadn’t even named theirs yet was a nightmare.

    1. Masten, McVeigh (suspended R1), Robinson all should do well this year. See point 2 of the reply I gave Cameron above if you’re prepared to try something a little more left field.

    1. Me either! The ritual begins again tonight. Pre-game drinks at Transport, the nerves, talking about the game with mates on the walk down, sitting amongst 70,000 other footy junkies, banter with the punters around you, singing the song….it’s going to be glorious!!

  8. Motts what are your thoughts on Ben Nason at Tigerland? Cheap @ 90 odd k and he got named for his debut tonight, though there are a few peeps who think he wont stick in the seniors for that long. Still, I cant see Hardwick dropping him after one game unless he’s shocking…could be a good cashcow ahead of Rd 4?

(Im basically trying to validate him as my 7th/8th def here so I can keep Schonemakers in. Just dont get me started about my rucks…)

    0

    0
    1. I’ve got Nason as my (E) this week. I wouldn’t be playing him on the field though, DotI – he’s strictly an 8th defender option.

      0

      0
      1. Sorry, yes, 8th or 9th Defender. Id be in trouble if he was my 7th.

Can I clarify the rules on price rises: so every player will see their price adjusted at the end of round 3?

        0

  9. ok, here’s my team:

def: goddard, enright, hodge, gram, hunt, ladson, waters
    emg: maguire, nason

mid: ablett (c), selwood, harvey, ball, trengrove, martin
    emg: mcveigh, barlow

    ruc: tippett, naitanui
    emg: warnock, lobbe

fwd: riewoldt, o’keefe, gray, hall, dangerfield, ziebell, rockliff
    emg: gumbleton, podsiably

i’ll admit it’s probably a risky team (and subject to change a little with teams announced later today). my main concerns are rockliff/pods/gumbleton as a playing rookie in the fwd and hunt/ladson as two roughies in the backline. i *think* i’m happy with my midfield and ruck selections.

mcveigh is there to swap for trengrove/martin after his suspension.

    any thoughts? all appreciated. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. so for me, DT is down time from the stress of SC. Understanding this fact is key to understanding my team selections. To illustrate, here’s my midfield:

Gibbs, Murphy, Simpson, Walker, Robinson, Martin
      (Judd, Barlow)

I think you’ll be able to figure out pretty quick how the rest of the team is made up.

      0

    2. mate im only 19 as well…i played in DT for the first time last year, only lost 2 games in the Home and Away season and won the Premiership!!

      0
        1. haha nah i had guys finish in the top 10,00 in my league…yet i won when it counted!!! Yeah i know, im gonna step up my game but Supercoach is my NO.1 priority, it kicks DT”s ass lol.

    1. You’re taking a punt, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I just wanted to make sure that you’re using the dollars you’re saving to upgrade another part of your team. All the blokes you’ve chosen back there aren’t bad choices.

      0

      0
      1. ahhh now you have me worried lol!
hmmmm – do u think upgrading a def to gram and downgrading a mid to Boak is good choice?? Thanks for your help btw!!!

        0

        0
        1. I REALLY like Gram and I was left REALLY unimpressed by Cooney’s NAB Cup form. Don’t know how Boak played in the preseason but to me, that decision makes itself.

          0

          0
          1. Motts, how many guys bust their balls in the NAB, unless they have something to prove i.e getting in the side or coming back from injury.

            0

            0
          2. There were a heap of proven performers that scored well in the preseason, PA. Coon wasn’t one of them. I hope he proves he can get back to Brownlow form in the H&A season but at this stage, going by what I have in front of me, I honestly can’t say he’s a great choice.

            0

            0
          3. All I’m saying is no one gives two hoots about the NAB, just look st Roosy record and they won a flag. They treat it as a practice match nothing more nothing less tiges beating cats by 51, come on.

            0

            0
    1. Personally I’d go Dangerfield, based on the Dogs’ incredibly full forward line now (Hall, Johnson, Higgins, Ginasiracusa, Hahn, Hill, Akermanis….oh yeah and Murphy).

      0

      0
  11. nobody seems to have mention daniel Kerr how do you guys rate him? obviously injury free would be nice but he seams cheap. The guy was only runner up in the brownlow a few yrs back.

also Tom Swift he is pretty highly rated but only cheap aswell do you think either of these is a gd option over travis boak?

my mids pendles, bartel, mitchell, Boak?? trengove, martin

    0

    0
      1. Sorry, but Kerr’s career most certainly doesn’t depend on him playing well this year. He is a walk up starter to the Eagles for as long as his body allows him. His Supercoach career and his WCE career – they are 2 very, very different things!

  12. My final team Motts – what you think:
    Goddard,Enright,Hodge, Gram, Hunt, Farmer, Waters
Ablett, Selwood, Gibbs, Cooney, Trengrove, Martin
    Tippett, Nic Nat
Riewoldt, ROF, B Harvey, Gray, Dangerfield, Medhurst, Mayne? or Ballentyne

  13. I’d put Zeebs in for Dangers but that’s about it. Big fan of Ryan O’Feefe. Or maybe you’ve got Rolling On Floor in your Fwd line. Either way, it’s good.

  14. Motts,
All these rookies getting a game is doing my head in
Can you pls rank the following
    Shuey
    Jetta
    Bastinec
    Howlett

also know your reservations on Gumbleton, but would you risk him over Hitchcock for a fwd emergency

    thanks

      1. yeah ive gone with Giansiracusa as they have said it’s a 50 50 chance that he will play so if he does i still don’t think he will have much impact

  15. Mattner is set to run through the mid-field and will probably have a cracker of a season, but Kennelly is a bargain at that price. I went Kennelly.

    1. Grimmo mentioned to me that he wasn’t in the squad that was shown on The Footy Show last night. That doesn’t mean that he won’t make it into the team. You’ve just gotta watch for the teams in 40 mins. If you’re worried about it, don’t put him on the field/make him an (E) this week.

      0

      0
  16. I think he is a certainty and the Footy Show is full of it. You don’t promote a rookie that early unless he’s a starter. Lock him in. I’ve followed Motts’ advice and have him as a starter now *gulp*. Him and Trengove this week given Martin is in doubt for tonight.

    1. Don’t take it as gospel, but a Victorian radio station just announced he has stomach pain (prolly caught it from Cuz). I’m scanning all media I can now to actually get a link (I should have kept my trap shut till I have some better evidence).

      1. Can’t find anything…someone mentioned it at http://www.dreamteamtalk.com, but I think it might be rubbish. I also got an SMS from a friend in Melbourne telling me to drop him, but turns out he only read it on dreamteamtalk too. Keep your eyes peeled just in case.

    2. Thanks for the info. I didn’t see the footy show, but I heard something about it on the radio. I’ve been thinking about replacing Barlow on my bench with Shuey or Strauss, but, the truth is, I’m getting a little antsy waiting for this thing to kick off, so, I think I’ll take your advice and keep him locked in.
Martin is in doubt for tonight??? shit, he is in my midfield, can you give me some details?

Trengrove from Melb, or Morabitto from Freo?

Otherwise team looks settled with only L Franklin not actually scoring.

Final Day Nerves?

Written by Motts on

  4. up late last night putting the final touches to my team. i had struggled for about 3 days getting it right and always seemed to be 100k short. now i’m happy with my team (i think!) and i have 100k spare and don’t have anyone i really want to spend it on. :/

  5. Motts,
just wondering whether you think bernie vince is going to play or not considering he hasnt been fully training and is thought to be “underdone”.
    cheers

  6. Where did the “The Footy Show” get them teams from (can’t found them anywhere) and then they Flash them up for 2 seconds so you only see half the side.

  9. ok, here’s my team:

def: goddard, enright, hodge, gram, hunt, ladson, waters
    emg: maguire, nason

mid: ablett (c), selwood, harvey, ball, trengrove, martin
    emg: mcveigh, barlow

    ruc: tippett, naitanui
    emg: warnock, lobbe

fwd: riewoldt, o’keefe, gray, hall, dangerfield, ziebell, rockliff
    emg: gumbleton, podsiably

i’ll admit it’s probably a risky team (and subject to change a little with teams announced later today). my main concerns are rockliff/pods/gumbleton as a playing rookie in the fwd and hunt/ladson as two roughies in the backline. i *think* i’m happy with my midfield and ruck selections.

mcveigh is there to swap for trengrove/martin after his suspension.

    any thoughts? all appreciated. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. nobody seems to have mention daniel Kerr how do you guys rate him? obviously injury free would be nice but he seams cheap. The guy was only runner up in the brownlow a few yrs back.

also Tom Swift he is pretty highly rated but only cheap aswell do you think either of these is a gd option over travis boak?

my mids pendles, bartel, mitchell, Boak?? trengove, martin

    Shuey
    Jetta
    Bastinec
    Howlett

also know your reservations on Gumbleton, but would you risk him over Hitchcock for a fwd emergency

    thanks

  15. Mattner is set to run through the mid-field and will probably have a cracker of a season, but Kennelly is a bargain at that price. I went Kennelly.

  16. I think he is a certainty and the Footy Show is full of it. You don’t promote a rookie that early unless he’s a starter. Lock him in. I’ve followed Motts’ advice and have him as a starter now *gulp*. Him and Trengove this week given Martin is in doubt for tonight.

  29. DAMN, both my forward bench players -Pods & Rockliff are named as emergencies…think I might have to draft in R. Roberts after all. Or Andrew Moore whose been named for Port, #9 in the draft. Does anybody have any mail on Moore? I’m fairly sure he is from the Eastern Ranges.

Trengrove from Melb, or Morabitto from Freo?

Otherwise team looks settled with only L Franklin not actually scoring.
