Flavour Of The Week – Rd 17

Written by Chillo on July 10 2019

Just when you thought it was safe to play Supercoach again….

Yep, the byes are actually over, although you wouldn’t know it after looking at the benches of some of the teams going around at the moment. Popular premos such as Gawn, Cripps, Boak, Daniel and Whitfield all rode the pine last weekend. And now the Giants have the gall to tell us that Josh Kelly is going to sit out the next three weeks as well! Planning and analysis are definitely the wheels and motor of the Supercoach car, but unfortunately you won’t get far without the fuel that makes it all run, and that is a healthy slice of luck!

Here are this week’s most popular trade targets, as of 12pm, Wednesday July 10:

1.       James Sicily (HAW, def, $437 700)

Plus:

+ Jimmy Two-Face returned to defence last week, and to no-one’s surprise, he also returned to premium scoring. 28 possessions, 14 marks, and a perfect 10 AFLCA votes from the best player on the ground against the Pies.

+ Sicily is currently 8th among defenders for scoring average, but all the way down at 26th for price tag. Extraordinarily under-priced for a player of his talent and scoring ability if he maintains that role as intercept defender.

+ I’m tempting fate here, but there’s been a lot more Sensible Sic and a lot less Stupid Sic this season. Maybe Clarko has finally figured out how to get Sicily to pull his head in?

Minus:

– While the Hawks won last weekend, they still only managed nine goals for the game. Scoring has been an issue for them the entire season, and it’s very possible Sicily moves forward again in an effort to remedy that…

– Lachie Whitfield is confirmed to return this week (as much as a Giants player can be confirmed to play) and I reckon he’ll outscore Sicily for the remainder of the season. What do you think?

2.      Kyle Dunkley (MEL, mid, $102 400)

Plus:

+ Nice debut from the the Dees impressive mid-season draftee, recording 11 touches and 5 tackles for his 58 points.

+ As a mid-season draftee, Dunkley comes with the basement price tag. Job security almost becomes irrelevant when the downgrade option is this cheap!

+ The younger brother of Dogs ball magnet Josh, good footy runs in Kyle’s genes. Playing in a winning side first up never hurts either!

Minus:

– Has only played one game.

– Started the game against the Blues fast fast fast, but almost completely vanished after half-time. May have found the pace of elite footy a little difficult to keep up with at this time?

3.      Oliver Hanrahan (HAW, fwd, $123 900)

Plus:

+ More mid time for Ollie against the Pies equated to more footy and more points. 16 disposals and a couple of goals for Hanrahan in a polished performance, giving him 85 points.

+ Now on the bubble with a break-even of -56, Hanrahan is your only bubble boy this week with a realistic chance of getting a game.

+ Has earnt his spot in the Hawks line-up courtesy of solid VFL form over the past three seasons, after being picked up in the 2016 rookie draft.

Minus:

– Given Clarkson’s penchant for shifting magnets this season, Hanrahan could easily find himself back in the forward pocket, and the lower scoring that comes with that role.

– Lack of DPP status can be a problem at this time of year, where swinging players around the board can help lessen the effect of injuries and other dramas on your team.

4.      Isaac Quaynor (COL, def, $153 300)

Plus:

+ We’ve been waiting for IQ to debut for while now, and Pick 13 in last year’s draft didn’t disappoint. The dashing halfback recorded 18 touches, 4 marks and four tackles for 82 points in his first game.

+ Solid VFL form became impossible to ignore, with Quaynor also averaging 18 possessions in his ten games for the Pies reserves.

+ With Collingwood in the clutches of a mid-season slump, Bucks may decide that a bit of youth and dash out of defence is exactly what the black and whites need right now.

Minus:

– Only played one game.

– Lots of big names on the Pies injury list at the moment, and many of them are short-termers. How’s Isaac’s job security looking?

5.       Shannon Hurn (WCE, def, $532 800)

Plus:

+ Another week, another ton for Bunga, who recorded his tenth triple-figure score of the year in the Eagles’ huge Derby win. 22 disposals, including 19 kicks, at 82% efficiency for 101 points.

+ Hurn has been exceptional in general play this season. But even if he’s not, you can bet that he will magically find the footy most times the opposition misses a shot at goal. And he’s not afraid to play on from the restart either!

+ This is the cheapest Hurn has been since round 3, and he’s still the second-highest scoring defender going around.

Minus:

– In 13 seasons prior to this year, Hurn never once averaged over 97. Can he sustain this 110+ pace for the last seven weeks?

– Hurn is still a ripe candidate for a late season “managed” if the Eagles are looking comfortable for September. You’ve been warned!

#6 – 10: Marcus BONTEMPELLI (WBD), Tom STEWART (GEE), Derek EGGMOLESSE-SMITH (RIC), Lachie NEALE (BRL), Jake LLOYD (SYD)

Most traded OUT players this week: Marty HORE (MEL), Dylan CLARKE (ESS), Xavier DUURSMA (PTA), Griffin LOGUE (FRE), Oskar BAKER (MEL), Josh KELLY (GWS), Will SETTERFIELD (CAR), Matthew PARKER (STK), Brett BEWLEY (FRE), Jackson HATELY (GWS)

  1. Thinking MCrouch as sideway trade for Jelly… crows have a good run home (no hard tags) with exception of WCE. At 505k looks a good option..

  2. Am I crazy? Would it be worth trading Naish to Quaynor, and loopholing Quaynor and Logue at D6 for the rest of the year (via Gardner D8)?
The other option is to upgrade Logue to Sicily, but doing so will stuff up my mid/fwd DPP.
