Flavour Of The Week – Rd 20

Written by Chillo on July 31 2019

As you can see from the table at the bottom of this article, trades are getting to be as rare as a Jake Kolodjashnij shot on goal (87 games and counting for the Cats backman). Here are this week’s most popular trade targets, as of 12pm, Wednesday July 31:

1.       Doulton Langlands (STK, mid/fwd, $123 900)

Plus:

+ Langlands produced almost identical stats to his debut in his second game, with 14 disposals, 3 tackles and a goal giving him 71 points. With a break-even of -63, he is certainly worth a thought as a bank builder this week.

+ DPP status could be invaluable for covering injuries on the way home.

Minus:

– Does Hanners actually play this week, and if so, does he replace Langlands? And would you be better off with a slightly cheaper downgrade option?

2.      Grant Birchall (HAW, def, $205 200)

Plus:

+ Another 87 points for the four time premiership winning defender in his ongoing comeback from injury purgatory. His drastically discounted price tag gives him a break-even of -51 in his bubble week.

+ The Hawks are only one win out of finals contention, and you can be sure Clarko will be at least partly relying on Birchall’s experience to get them playing again in September.

Minus:

– Played one week, then missed a week with soreness. After one game? Definitely a red flag there if you’re relying on Birchall for bench cover.

3.      Lachie Whitfield (GWS, def, $520 400)

Plus:

+ Based on scoring average, Whitfield is still the number two seed among all defenders this season. His 109 ppg pace would look good in your midfield, so it’s outstanding for a back.

+ GWS get the cellar dwelling Suns in the Supercoach grand final, which is likely to be an absolute points fest for the finals bound Giants.

Minus:

– Sutcliffe went to him last weekend and kept Lachie to only 90 points. With games against Sydney (Clarke/Hewett) and Hawthorn (Howe/Shiels) coming up, is Whitfield going to provide good return for investment?

4.      Will Snelling (ESS, mid, $117 300)

Plus:

+ He’s dominated the VFL since the mid-season draft, and Snelling has translated that form to the AFL in exceptional fashion. 18 disposals and four tackles in his second game give Will a break-even of -62.

+ The Bombers are in red hot form and Snelling’s forward pressure has definitely been a part of that. Hopefully Woosha continues to give the kid a run.

Minus:

– That forward pocket role means Snelling won’t be a reliable scorer, in which case a cheaper downgrade option might be a better way to go.

5.       Hayden McLean (SYD, fwd, $102 400)

Plus:

+ Another solid performance from the Swans double-backup-emergency ruckman, managing 11 disposals and 10 hitouts against the Cats in his second senior game. His 65 points in that game means McLean presents on the bubble with a break-even of -64 this week.

+ Due to an incredible injury toll, McLean’s job security is reasonably good, and the price is definitely right.

Minus:

– He plays a fair amount of game time as a ruck, but in Supercoach he’s forward only. Unfortunate.

#6 – 10: Daniel RICH (BRL), Rhylee WEST (WBD), Bachar HOULI (RIC), Marcus BONTEMPELLI (WBD), Rowan MARSHALL (STK)

Most traded OUT players this week: Dylan CLARKE (ESS), Luke RYAN (FRE), Mabior CHOL (RIC), Griffin LOGUE (FRE), Isaac QUAYNOR (COL), Jarrod CAMERON (WCE), Sam WALSH (CAR), Jackson HATELY (GWS), Will SETTERFIELD (CAR), Noah ANSWERTH (BRL)
