FPL GW1 Wash-Up

Written by MJ on August 19 2014

The first gameweek of Fantasy Premier League’s 2014/15 season has come to a close with Chelsea defeating Burnley 3-1 in the early hours of the morning.

SCT Manager of the Round: Jason Le, King Coutinho: 81 points.

Goalkeepers:
McGregor was the hero for Hull City against QPR, saving a penalty late in the match to earn 3 points for the away side and 14 points for his fortunate Fantasy owners. Lloris, Guzan and Hart were the only other keepers to hold a clean sheet. In selection news, Mannone ousted Pantilimon for Sunderland and Courtois got the nod over veteren Petr Cech.

Defenders:
With Hull, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Man City keeping clean sheets, it was their defenders who claim the majority of the points in GW1. Plenty of value was to be found in Hull and Villa’s defensive ranks, with Chester (£4.5m) bobbing up for a goal and 3 bonus points for a hot start of 15 and Vlaar (£4.5m) claimed 2 bonus points after his impressive defensive display. Attacking returns for Dier, Ivanovic, Koscielny helped them to double figure returns.

Midfielders:
It was the popular selections that fared the best amongst the midfielders, with many managers having a combination of Sterling, Fabregas, Ramsey, Silva and Sigurdsson. The latter has already risen to £6.1m after claiming a goal and an assist in the upset win against Manchester United. Lee Cattermole (£4.5m) scored for Sunderland and will prove enticing for bandwagon jumpers, however it will almost certainly be fools gold, as it’s just his first goal in the last five seasons.

Forwards:
Quite a few of the big money players proved their worth on the weekend, as Rooney, Sturridge, Aguero and Diego Costa found the back of the net, while West Brom budget striker, Berahino (£5.5m) was the only player who managed to bag two and has already been transferred in by nearly 50,000 managers. Weimann (£5.5m) and Naismith (£5.0m) were the other budget strikers to score goals and claim bonus points.

How did you fare after week one? Enjoying the distraction of FPL amidst the carnage going on in the SuperCoach world? I certainly am!

  1. Pretty average start to the year, scored 48. Don’t think I will make any knee jerk trades, only crazy bandwagon is Siggy who I have.

Have Mata/Hazard/Eriksen who might be swapped out for Ramsey/Silva/Fabregas next week.

  2. Thanks for this post

It’s my 1st time in an EPL comp, I was supposed to be the bunny of the league, but I’m sitting pretty on top of the ladder

I’m in the Sportal comp with 130pts, the points might be different

Thoughts on Luke Shaw and Emre Can? They didn’t get a run, should I flick them?

  3. Thanks MJ! Great wrap up for GW1!

    59/Ramsay

Totally totally forgot about Cesc! Probably still heartbroken initially when he went back to Barca! Oh they treated you well didn’t they Cesc?!? (Obviously the bridge and concrete hasn’t worked for me over the years!! And now he’s in the wrong part of London!!)

After all that, I will be transferring him in for GW2.

Silly me had Weimann on the bench and Campbell (CRY) on the pitch! So could have gained an additional 7pts!

On another note, I was at the Arsenal game and gees, we were awful! My section were really really p*ssed of with Cazorla too! But, 3pts is all that counts no matter how ugly you win it… Might be a good thing for this team later in the season.

But the biggest disappointment is how the home crowd still let’s the away fans sing and chant louder than they do!

This is the 3rd game I’ve been to now over the years and the Crystal fans were far and away the most vocal I’ve heard so far! (Bolton fans (10/11), were loud, while the Chel$ki fans (11/12) felt like they were never at the game! Mind you it was THE most boring nil all draw ever!!!

Overall though, still a great experience being at the Emirates… Except when they close one of the Tube Stations and thousands of fans have to flock to the one! Or walk a mile to the next one and find thousands of fans trying to get in there too (with me being one of them!!)

  4. Oops… Forgot to add that the injury time winner from Ramsey was such an immense buzz… The fans were going mental (me included!!).

    It’ll be a feeling/experience I’ll always remember!

  5. Average start with 57/Rooney

Unfortunately had Sigurdsson and van Aanholt on the bench which cost me a few points. Disappointed with my QPR boys Caulker and Mutch, but will give them another week to prove themselves.

  6. 64 so pretty good start. Got a win in the 1st head to head game. Sitting tight this week & then double corrective trade the following week.
Great having this up MJ. Will have us all checking the site over the SC off season.

  7. 59/Rooney, very average.

Had Siggy on the bench; just wasn’t confident enough in the Man U defense being that bad on the first match at home. Now we know, and He’ll play all the time. Had Clyne on the bench as well but no way I would do that differently in the same situation.

Probably trade Jovetic for Bony this week. Swans have such good fixtures for a while.

Totally agree with not making big changes based on just one week. I expect Mata to do well over the first 8 or so. If Man U completely fall apart for several more weeks then I’ll think about moving him.

  8. By the way, price changes in fpl can happen each night, and are due to the transfer activity (popularity) of each player.

They usually change price between 2am and 4am UK time, and sometimes it is an advantage to time your transfers to take advantage of players going up/down in price each night.

The following website tracks transfer activity and is a ‘good guide’ not gospel, as to the chances of a player going up/down in price each night. it becomes more accurate as the season goes on. NB it is a bit of guesswork as the fpl will not give out the exact formula used for the price changes.

  9. Great to have this stuff.
    49/Rooney
No clean sheets from 4 defenders and keeper didn’t help. Happy with my very late Sterling pick on Saturday night. Seemed to play forward a lot and he’s a good finisher.

  10. 71/Sturridge

Very happy with that score considering I had Baines and Terry combine for a total of 3 points. Also got lucky with Sigurdsson as I had him sitting on the bench but had two not play so he got the call-up as the auto-sub.

My budget-priced speculators all failed to take the field though which is a concern. Brady (Hull), Sidwell (Stoke) and Isla (QPR) all nowhere to be seen. Anyone know if they are a chance to play this week?

  11. 80/Studge

Very happy with my front seven all scoring other than Juan.

Chester the star in my uber cheap back line, Hutton’s points on the bench.

Looking to trade Chambers to Dummet this week with my FT on the way to bringing KUN in for GW3.

  12. Need to offload Shaw (MUT)

Any love for Blackett, cheap and has a favourable run?

    TU – Blackett (MUT)
    TD – Dummett (NEW)
