Game Chat – Brisbane vs Carlton

Written by Thommo on July 7 2018

WHERE AND WHEN: Gabba, Saturday, July 7, 1.45pm AEST

SUMMARY

Could this be the battle for the wooden spoon? It’s a match-up of 17th against 18th, but both teams would be happy with their form in recent weeks. The Lions are fresh from hammering Fremantle in Perth at the weekend, while the Blues have pushed Collingwood and Port Adelaide in the past fortnight without getting a victory. Brisbane has had a strong season despite its lack of success, and against the Dockers everything came together. Veterans Dayne Beams and Stefan Martin dominated and young stars Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry and Eric Hipwood all played leading roles. Berry did a great tagging job on Nat Fyfe before the Freo superstar went off with a hamstring injury and might be in line for a similar role against Carlton bull Patrick Cripps this week. For the Blues, Charlie Curnow has been white-hot, and with Harris Andrews out injured, looms as a difficult match-up for the home team. The Lions will be desperate to make it back-to-back wins and should do so on their home ground.

    1. allsaints

I was just thinking the same thing.

I put Hibberd v Freo at D6 over Doedee with no loophole.

Pretty happy not to waste that 120. 🙂

      1. was always gna miss games @ his age , gna need a strong def bench if you have him as the season progresses

        1. Aside from missing 2 games in 2015, he has played 22 games for the past five seasons. I don’t think he’s any more of an injury risk than the other def premiums.

  2. Just doing some stats in my planning for next year and I thought a little quiz before the game today would be a good idea (no cheating, answers before the first bounce):

    1. Which DEF has scored the most/least points (total) of these 3 so far this season?
    a. Tom DOEDEE
    b. James SICILY
    c. Shane SAVAGE

    2. Which MID has scored the most/least points (total) of these 3 so far this season?
    a. Tim KELLY
    b. Shaun HIGGINS
    c. Marcus BONTEMPELLI

    3. Which FWD has scored the most/least points (total) of these 3 so far this season?
    a. Bailey FRITSCH
    b. Christian PETRACCA
    c. Michael WALTERS

    1. 1. Doedee. Sic missed 2 games and Savage is a spud.
      2. T Kelly. Bont and Higgins missed games.
      3. Fritsch. Walters missed games and Petracca is a spud.

    2. This was probably a bad idea in hindsight, given the carnage of the last 45mins.
Apologies to anyone who was needlessly distracted.

ANSWER: they are in order from highest to lowest (a to c).

Whilst not overly surprising, I feel it does offer planning insights and implications for SuperCoach, in terms of:
      i. initial structure / team set-up / premos:rookies ratios / Cash ITB
ii. trade planning (volume, timing and numbers)
      iii. bye planning (premos)

Maybe I’ll cobble some crap together in the off-season and share some thoughts pre-season. To read or not to read …

      Enjoy the game all.

    1. Me. Stuck with Rice & Redman. Now trying to talk myself out of using a trade to bring in Sier/Dawson so I can move J Smith from mid to def. Telling myself a trade is not worth 40-50 points. But I hate donuts!

      1. webster an option … may be worth a lot more points and extra security?? Depends on your cash though … but yeah, i’m stuck with redman too …

      2. if it’s gonna majorly scupper your plans, i’d cop it?
avoiding one donut in the byes ended up costing me an extra two trades to end up in a worse position than I would have been if i’d just let it go. regret it now, but that’s life.

    2. Yes, but with 8 trades, one of which will be fyfe to bont, I’m bringing in wbd lynch after final teams are announced.

  3. I have Heron and Keeffe and they are emergencies so I have a chance at avoiding a doughnut but it is slim

  4. Mmmmmm, Simmo out with the old man’s football players injury has altered my trade planning in the mind a touch, may need to ask the mighty SCT coaches for their thumbs!!!

T/U …. original plans were to trade Austin < Keefe via dpp with the extra $$$$ bring Billings in as F9 allowing me to loophole Ahern / Billings today in the forward line & keep Billings as F9 cover when Heeney is back next week …..Yes, still do it Catta

T/D …. change of plans…Keep Austin & not grab Billings, but be forced to field either Austin/J Smith as D6 using the latter as D7 cover for anymore late outs in defence but have no loop option in defence & be forced to play Ahern as F6 no bench cover this week….this is better, change of plans are better Catta!

    Hope that makes sense 🙂

    Cheers Catta

    1. so you still have JSmith as cover for Simmo if you stick with your original plan?
      if so, i’d do that.

      1. I currently have Austin / J Smith on the bench allsaints, so I’ll have no loophole option….just be forced to field either Austin or JSmith to replace Simpson & use the other as D7 cover for anymore late outs this round.

        1. if Smith gets 50 you might miss out on what? 30pts!

to my mind, it’s more about the implications of what you do today on the rest of your season. you obviously have a plan. does changing plans today to address this one problem effect your overall plans? if it does, then i would recommend sticking with your plan and forgoing 30pts.

it was addressing a similar situation in the first bye round, that sent my plans down the dunny. i now have three trades left and am not full premium. if i’d just copped one donut that week, i’d now be at full premium with 5/6 trades left. I WILL NEVER CHASE THAT SHORT-TERM SH1T AGAIN!

  5. I think I’ll cop a donut today – will completely derail my plans if I try and organise a replacement on short notice. Obviously if I’d known earlier, could have easily got in Lloyd yesterday. Ah well.

      1. maybe your right ,
I’m far from perfect champ , interestingly ,
I’m not the one slandering another user on this site over their opinions ,
but that’s ok , you are allowed to have an opinion ..

  6. Need an answer please!

Can 2 emergencies cover 2 donuts? I have Simpson and Mcdaid (102k loophole) on field and Rance (e) and Naughton on the bench. If I put emergency Naughton do I just get the lower score, or do I get both?

    Thanks in advance!

  7. On fanfooty it says that Charlie Curnow has 3 clangers with only 2 touches, 1 being a goal and no FA. How is that possible?

  8. Should I go Ridley to Mihocek for 32k? My cover is currently Redman and Ridley and neither look like playing anytime soon. Only 4 trades left but at full premo and have good cover in the forward Line and midfield. Facing a Simmo donut this week and potential future donuts if I don’t make the trade.

    1. do you have plans that this move will scupper?
are you going for overall or leagues?
if leagues, does a donut really matter this week? ie will it cost you games you can’t afford to lose?
if overall, then if it doesn’t effect your plans, why not? if it does, i’d cop it.

      1. haha thanks mate, I’m doing both but overall is my priority. 3 trades makes me nervous but this is an issue that can easily recur and something I thought I’d be faced with sooner than later (having no defensive bench cover). I’m at full premo so have no plans other than to not run out of trades for as long as possible. Have Ahern, Spargo and Giro on my mid bench and Guelfi and Smith on my forward bench, so I can survive a few weeks of players missing in those areas. Redman was looking bloody good after I paid an extra 11k for him over Mihocek til he got injured haha, that Perth surface has cost me 3 syndemosis injuries this year (Ryan, Venables and Redman). The other things is Redman could come back for the last 3 games or so.

        1. I’m also not desperate to win any league games, sitting 2nd in my private league and my opponent in the doctor supercoach league has the exact same issue.

          1. I’d cop it then. Sounds like Simmo needs a rest that’s all. Don’t do what I do, do as I say. Or you’ll burn those blessed trades before I do!! 😉

            1. Cheers mate, good idea, I’ll hold tight and pray for good luck and that Ridley can kill it for my Essendon two’s tomorrow and get back in the side. Still a bit worried going forward without cover, if it was just this week it’d be fine but there’s a chance Sicily gets suspended or another player misses 1 or 2 games, in which case I’m getting 4 extra donuts between now and seasons end.

  10. Anyone got any info on Simmo’s injury. If its just a week, I’ll bring in Lynch for d7 and e cover. If its longer, I’ll cop the donut and trade him for Lloyd next week.

    1. Calf tightness. Translates as “we don’t really want to win this game, so we’ll give old man Simpson the day off”.

I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t line up next week.

  11. Bloody hell… why is it that every time I sleep in until the afternoon on a day when we’re playing, I get up to check the score and find we’re being mauled?

  13. The last two weeks I’ve felt very smug about having held Charlie Curnow. This week, not so much.
