Game Chat – Collingwood v Hawthorn

Written by Motts on July 10 2020

Where and when: Friday 7:50pm at GIANTS Stadium.

Last time they met:

Friday July 5, 2019

Hawthorn 9.13 (67) def Collingwood 9.9 (63) at the ‘G.

What it means for Hawthorn: The second game in as many weeks in Blacktown will almost make this feel like a home game for The Hawks as they attempt to break into the 8 with a win.

What it means for Collingwood: The Pies looked to be the benchmark early on in the restarted season but 2 losses in 2 weeks sees them desperate to get their season back on track.

Mottsy Watch: Grundy will of course hold a lot of my attention but I’m keen to see how De Goey plays after being charged with sexual assault last week (how is that even allowed?!?).

Mottsy’s Tip: Hawthorn by 5 (only because the Pies are without Howe and Sidebum)

    1. Yes, how is he allowed to play when he’s been charged with sexual assault? I understand innocent until proven guilty but AFL players are held to higher standards, are they not?

      1. Getting both, but Titch this week. This’ll be as cheap as he gets, whereas Yeo will still be 500k~ next week.

  1. What happened to the AFL app posting final teams? To make matters worse, final teams aren’t announced until an hour before the game this year too.

    1. The AFL app has noticeably less articles post hiatus. I’d say they may have let a few go in their media division.

  2. Praying for no late outs in any games this week. Got 2 injuries and rookies missing so have no bench cover in any position.

Also carn the hawks not there last week so hoping I’m just bad luck and we can beat the pies again! Surely they are a shambles!

    1. Personally I’m waiting to see if Hawthorn putting McEvoy back into the ruck is just a temporary thing.

    2. I would say probably.

I like having ruck cover and with a crammed schedule coming up could you imagine the kerfuffle if Gawn, Grundy and Goldstein get managed

  3. Hawthorn are destined to lose the free kick count every week since Clarko criticized the umpiring. Mitchell hit in the head = holding the ball.

    1. they’ve always been low on the free kick count
but they’ve controlled so much of the ball over the last few decades , it didn’t matter

  4. Bah. Feel like the reputations of players like Toby Greene and Sicily precede them. Get bullshit frees paid against them simply on the basis that they’re near the ball.

    1. Clarko should just stick to coaching rather than critiquing the umpires. The players are certainly looking flat and need a good old bake right now.

      1. Clarko had every right to voice his opinion
1/2 the way through the last Q last week , Hawthorn had 44 tackles for 1 free kick paid
blatant home ground favoritism needs to be called out for what it is
more interstate teams in the race for the GF means a better chance of interstate umpires , umpiring an interstate GF

        1. Don’t get me wrong, he was right, the umps need to penalize holding the ball when players drop the ball or flick it out of the tackle with one hand. It just doesn’t look good when coaches whinge and the Hawks have copped terrible umpiring the two following weeks.

That said, we were so bad this week and last that umpiring was pretty irrelevant.

  6. De Goey absent hurts my team :(. How was he allowed to sexually assault someone with these lockdown laws anyway !!!!!! It was made up by Hawthorn fans to keep him out !?!?!?!?!

    1. Mate, your schtick is running real thin.

Never funny and, in this case, just insensitive.

      Enough.

  7. Got the VC on Grundy like a lot of folk, hoping he picks it up from here.

    Will Day is looking alright.

  8. Wingard Wingard Wingard

    Has anyone seen him.

Samson lost his strength when Delilah cut his hair.
Wingard has a haircut and can’t find the footy.

Let’s hope Clarko moves him onball for the second half

      1. I had a gut feeling he is going to do bad against Grundy and i still kept him on the field..‍

  9. I thought starting Ceglar and Wingard was a masterstroke, I am not so sure..
Is it TU Clarko’s role change
TD it’s them , not top 10 stuff

    1. Good morning Jeanott.

I don’t have Wingard. He can score well, but seems to either get injured or get stuck in some bad form spots. I think he will come good. If he shows sighs of a niggle or misses a game I would look at offloading him if you can.

As for Ceglar. I started him as underpriced Ruck Cover, capable of averaging 90+ as first Ruck.
He was pretty good early, and was averaging 94.5 before last week even.
Then..Mummy really beat him up . So much so they messed with their structure and put McEvoy back in the Ruck.
The positive side is that this week, he regained first Ruck duties and I know he still scored sh#t, but he was up against Grundy.
I would loophole him if possible next week as he has Gawn , he should do ok after that.

I feel its better not to sideways “Premo’s” unless the rest of your team doesn’t need fixing. As many on this great site have said before , we need to prioritise downgrading to rookies with solid JS, and then trying to upgrade rookies on field.

The other reason I chose to keep him, was the the fact we are about to play a whole heap of games on the trot, and he may come in handy if one of my Rucks are rested.

It’s easy to get trade rage, with underperforming players, even more so with this years trade situation.
I just remember Father Dougal talking about reverting to averages and trust that it can happen.
Trust me, there’s nothing worse than trading out a player just before they hit a purple patch.

Hope that helps, best of luck for the rest of the round.

  11. Any more posts like that mate and you’ll be banned. Stick the boot into Wingard as much as you like but avoid the homophobic slurs please.

      1. To whoever took town his comment/banned him, thank you very much! I was deeply, personally offended by those comments they were disgusting! I am very appreciative to the community for standing against it.

Big thanks to Corr Enthusiast and especially Thommo for calling it out! Hate to see it in this day and age, just focus on the footy!!!

        1. Sorry for that Ewan, it’s not what we want this site to be about. We don’t need racist or homophobic slurs this day and age. I’ve just realized the initial comment is still there – I’ll remove it now.

  13. Congratulations to the debutantes. Most looked more than handy.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Ceglar has a rest next week coming up against Gawn.
Looks like Day and Simpson locked in to come into my side, its jus a question of who goes out.
With Wingard and Ceglars performances this week it’s got me thinking who are the top forwards.
Simpkin, Greenwood and Walter’s with Whitfield and Martin probables then it’s a guessing game at the moment.

    1. Keep your powder dry Shaggi……..Rankine to debut tomorrow. Perhaps double downgrade on the cards next week = happy days.

  14. Anyone else in the mindset of double downgrading next week with Simpson and day?
Surely don’t wanna miss the boat on either

    1. 100% doing the same thing barring injuries. Get some warm bodies/loophole options on the bench and then double upgrade the week after.

    1. Was always going to happen once Breust got injured. Wingard played mostly forward for a team whose midfield was convincingly beaten.

He’ll be okay, but unfortunately you’ll have to ride out the scoring troughs.
