Game Chat – Essendon vs St Kilda

Written by Thommo on April 3 2021

Where and when: Marvel, Saturday 3rd April, 2021 at 4:35pm (AEDT)

Last time they met: Rd 12, 2020: St Kilda 10.8 (68) def Essendon 5.3 (33) at the GABBA.

The Saints put this one away early with a 7 goal to 2 goal first-half against an under-manned Essendon.  Jones, Steele and Billings had plenty of the ball while King kicked 3 goals and Membrey 2 goals. For the Bombers, Merrett, Shiel, McGrath and Parish were serviceable but they were probably never a chance with injuries to Daniher, Stringer, Fantasia, Laverde and Smith.

Match Preview:

This match feels very similar to last season when the Saints played the Bombers with multiple players missing through injury. And for the Saints, it’s a good thing too. They need a win after an unimpressive win against the Giants and then being outclassed by the Demons. The debut of Brad Crouch is sure to help the Saints’ midfield get on top and it will take a massive effort from the Bombers’ few remaining stars if they are to kick a winning score.

Thommo Watch:

Essendon – Who’s left on the Titanic? Ridley is doing his best to unseat Lloyd as the number 1 defender and he is sure to see a LOT of the ball down back. It seems like Merrett has been in and out of the midfield so he is sure to benefit from injuries to Shiel and Caldwell as will McGrath.
St Kilda – Jack Steele isn’t popular this season but he looks likely to remain a top 8 midfielder. With the exception of back-up ruckman, Hunter, there aren’t a lot of popular Saints players (until Marshall returns from injury).
Thommo’s Tip: St Kilda by 30 points (current tipping record: 3 from 6)

  1. Gresham out for the day and he couldn’t put any weight on his right foot, so it could be his achilles

  2. Fanfooty have given everyone but Steele for the saints a witches hat.

Bombers have 12 players with 10 possessions or more at half time, saints just 3.

These upsets better have finished by Monday!!

  3. What an embarrassment this Saints side are!! Recruitment team need to be sacked and replaced immediately.
I’ve always felt that last year was an anomaly, we snuck up on some teams and had an easy draw to make finals.
Steele aside, i look at our so called big recruits and can’t help thinking they we’re rejects from teams that actually know what a good player is.
How much money are Hannebry, hill, howard, higgins and alike on. Bunch of injury prone or over hyped pretenders. And I’ve got no confidence in Ratton as a head coach, it’s going to be a long year!!

    1. Barely beat GWS who now look woeful. Put on an effort to lose closely to Melbourne.

Pretty hard to get a read on the Saints off those 2 games.

      But this? Woeful.

Look like they dropped a lot of the wrong people.

  4. People without Ridley are going to struggle to get him in the way he’s scoring. Is he locked in as the new SC defensive darling?

  5. As a Dons fan with Grundy VC, Highmore dropped and Cox with the E on the defensive bench… couldn’t have been a better afternoon.
