Game Chat – Footscray v Collingwood

Written by Thommo on June 23 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Sunday June 23, 3:20pm AEST

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: Given their upcoming run of fixtures, it’s big. They face Collingwood, an interstate trip to Port Adelaide and Geelong in the next three games, so this result could be the difference between breathing new life and momentum into their season or falling irretrievably adrift of the chasing pack outside the eight.

What it means for Collingwood: Five teams currently lead the race to finish top four, and with Geelong setting the pace, pressure remains on third-placed Collingwood and co. Their eight wins in the past nine games started by beating the Bulldogs and they need to keep the ball rolling.

The stat: Collingwood star ruckman Brodie Grundy won the hitout count 60-6 against Tim English in round four this season. The All Australian monstered his more inexperienced opponent and in doing so had the highest percentage of hitouts in a game during the AFL era.

The match-up: Marcus Bontempelli v Scott Pendlebury

Both are stars, both are born leaders, both are left-footers, both find time and space like few others. The similarities between Bontempelli and Pendlebury are evident. If either gets the upper hand, their side will be well on the way to a win.

It’s a big week for: Josh Dunkley

The Bulldogs’ midfielder re-signed with the club for a further three years on Tuesday and has set a remarkable standard in the past six weeks, averaging 32.5 disposals to provide another dimension in the middle. A career-best 41 touches last week against Carlton alerted many to his rapid rise, and now arguably the premier midfield group in the competition awaits as his latest challenge.

Thommo’s Tip: Collingwood by 10 points.

  1. Let’s hope we don’t get a repeat of their last meeting. Dogs playing keepings off from the first minute and not trying to score.
The way they targeted Cripps you would think Treloar or Pendlebury might be in for the same .

  2. Down to the wire.
I have Moore, my opponent has Treloar +17 points. We’ve both VCd Gawn. What would you do?

Roll the dice, captain Grundy and hope he puts up a 169.
Take Gawn’s score and hope Moore can outscore Treloar by 18pts.

Note that I’ve already dropped our lowest scorers from our sides. Just premo common players left, so unless they churn out a sub 50, the defect to make up is 17.

    1. no rain or wind @ marvel stadium so we know treloar will get a high possession count with poor disposal efficiency
moore will probably score his usual 70/80 despite his sharp new haircut
i recon the apple in the oranges is grundy , if his ankle is ok ,
the dogs wont have an answer anywhere on the ground for him ,
should dominate & score @ least 150 imo
      im sticking with gawn though

    2. Depends on what you’re aiming for, overall ranking or league wins.

If you just want a league win I’d take a gamble on captain Grundy, can’t really see Moore outscoring Treloar by 18.

If you’re after overall ranking I’d stick to Gawns 151. That’s alot of points to risk on a possibly still sore Grundy. The point could be made that if he scores more than 151 you could get a jump on the rest of the pack who are taking Gawns score. But if Grundy falls short it will find you slipping behind.

    3. Change cap to Grundy. Wait and see if opp somehow falls for it and does the same. Then you know what to do just before the bounce….

  3. Was getting bored waiting for this game to start, so I went back to read over my first written preseason articles and to see statements like, “O’Brien is looking to really be pushing for Jacobs spot, so keep an eye on him as he may break into the 22 this year.” and many other statements like that was really satisfying! I really love this game and site with all the people on it. If i could just pick a good Supercoach team, it would put the icing on the cake. Of course that never happens!

All i want from today is Dunkley, Macrae and Grundy to total a score of 320 so i can reach a score of 1900 for the round. Is that too much to ask?

  8. One of those calls you regret, spent all week tossing up between neale and macrae, went for neale and macrae has him covered at half time, nevermind, hopefully neale can finish season well.

    1. Hear you Bruce P.
Have Macrae however brought in Neale and because of injury cloud to Grundy made Neale captain when Macrae would have been my next choice anyway.
      Neale will bounce back

    1. Not really, they put a stop to Dogs’ momentum. They haven’t played Greenwood, Varcoe or Sier as a tagger and singled out a particular Dogs midfielder.
