Game Chat – Fremantle v Carlton

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on February 29 2020

Where and when: David Grays Arena, Saturday 29 February, 7.10pm AEDT

Watchlist:

Blake ACRES (FREO) FWD/MID @ $384,400

The double departure of Hill and Langdon leaves the wingman role open for Acres, who had fleetingly teased us with is large ceiling at the Saints. An interesting F3 option after an impressive pre-season.

Andrew BRAYSHAW (FREO) FWD/MID @ $382,800

Increased his SC output in his second year by +10 and now said to be primed for a breakout. Will need to show significant improvement in his disposals, score involvements, meters gained and kick rating; areas which he rates average, below average, poor and the worst of the top 250 players respectively.

Connor BLAKELY (FREO) DEF @ $411,500

Openings in the Docker’s midfield and increased defensive depth might finally give Blakely the consistent midfield minutes we’ve been hoping for. Monitor closely.

Jack MARTIN (CARL) FWD/MID @ $420,800

Reported to be splitting his time between the MID and FWD. Could finally get the chance return to the tantalizing ceiling he showed us glimpses of at the Suns.

Sam DOCHERTY (CARL) DEF @ $436,100

Felt good to type the words “Sam DOCHERTY” into this watchlist. Great to see him back. Monitor his minutes, role, kick to handball ratio, kick ins and effect of Newman to determine whether you’ll start him.

Notable Absentees: Stephen HILL (FREO), Hayden YOUNG (FREO), Nat FYFE (FREO), Patrick CRIPPS (CARL).

  1. Really looking forward to this one folks.

    Thank you GD.

You certainly seemed to have eased into this Contributor thing quite nicely 😉

    Freo by 25 🙂

    1. Ah. Thanks, FT. Enjoying it.

Also, was hoping you’d be around for this one. Eager to get your take throughout the game.

  2. Martin’s work rate is exceptional rn.

Attended the last couple center bounces and leading the ground for tackles.

  3. Go FREO!
Who is that Polson bloke? He’s started half of our score chains but plays for Carlton, mate we need to change the term SPUD to POLSON coz he makes spuds look like Brownlow winners

  4. Seriously it’s time to relegate Carlton out of the AFL and give Tazzy a team. It’s ridiculous to allow real footballers to risk their careers every week playing against a team that is so far behind everybody else you couldn’t see them with the hubble telescope.
I genuinely feel sorry for Jack Martin, poor bloke went straight from the toilet of Gold Coast to the fetid sewerage farm of Carlton

      1. They’ve had 20 years of regular seasons mate and they just keep on getting worse. How is anyone meant to evaluate Freo players for supercoach when they play against a useless team like Carlton? It looks like the Carlton players don’t even know the rules of the game. Their great white hope Walsh was totally outclassed by a relatively unknown and, last year proved that Cripps is a potatoe if anybody goes head to head against him or if he’s tagged. They have no hope of matching a real AFL team. Schulzy cut em to ribbons and he’s the most unskilled player in our team

    1. Now, now…

On this site we like to keep things classy and constructive. We try to avoid mud-slinging here.

      1. Speaking the truth isn’t mud-slinging mate. The most positive thing that could be said about Carltons football team is…… ok so I can’t see anything positive but give me a week and I’ll get back to you. Perhaps they have a nice logo?

        1. The fact is that they the MOST UNSUCCESSFUL team in the history of the AFL. They don’t deserve to be in the competition

        2. Truth or falsehood aside, the point I’m trying to get across is that while the rest of the internet is a cesspit of acrimonious chest-beating and negativity, this site rises above that kind of thing to be one of the friendliest, most welcoming places on the internet. We’d like to keep it that way.

That’s not to say that there’s no room for good-natured banter, or for airing unpopular opinions – the key is the tone. Keep it friendly and civil, and you won’t have a problem.

            1. So we’re leaning more towards “Carlton are rubbish, but with some improvement they’ll get better”?

    2. Hey mate, you seem passionate. Since this is a SuperCoach site, lets focus on that?

I took a fair bit from this. Docherty seems to be moving well and that’s all I care about.

Brayshaw has been on my rader but im not sure I can squeeze him in. Just a few more around his price more enticing. Acres and Aish seems pretty handing but again, just too awkward with others around their prices showing more in previous seasons. Really want Fyfe and Walters next game to see.

Wanted to see more from Williamson not going to lie.

      1. I was actually pretty underwhelmed with Docherty, and decided Dawson was a safer risk.

Double ACL. I just don’t know that he’s going to return close to what he was, and we’ve got Newman to include in the mix now.

It’s good that he’s back, but I certainly wouldn’t be keeping him on the basis of this one match.

Maybe we’ll see a bit more value in him next week.

        1. It’s his first proper hit-out since man discovered fire, I’m not too concerned about his score, it was very clear he had some cobwebs to dust off. He made it through the game and had good TOG, and that’s all I was looking for.

  5. After all these years I still can’t believe that every year people get sucked into thinking JLT/Marsh results actually mean something.

      1. Going to pass on Crippa, maybe a upgrade after I see how he goes in a team that looks like they are going to struggle to win 7 games

        1. Whole reason I’m starting Cripps is because he carries Carlton. Racks up the points and gets hella scaling.

          1. I’ve actually gone from “he’s Cripps lock him in” to thinking “well actually he was a bit of a rollercoaster last season. What’s the chance of him putting up more lower scores?”
I still think he’s top 6. But wouldn’t be surprised if he’s average lowers this season and finishes around top 12.

  6. Can Cripps go 120 average? You would say he certainly could. He is currently part of my 5 premo mids, if I am to drop one it will be him as I perceive the other 4 to be more durable.
His ownership is so high, he is practically a shield.

  7. Guys this is JLT, Carlton is not as bad at it seems. They are just experimenting stuff like everyone else. I wouldnt read too much into that game. From history JLT form doesnt carry into the season. Just wished I would see more of the complete team but this state of Origin Game prior makes it really hard to gauge.

    1. A few years back the Pies beat Hawthorn in a JLT game. Hawks won the flag, Pies finished 13th…..M.

      1. Spot on Max, and that isn’t just a one-off it happens every year multiple times. Especially the 1st JLT some teams are just at different stages of their pre season to accurately access each game- For all we know Carlton (or Sydney) may have had a massive week on the training track and we’re fairly spent for the game.
The last JLT game will give us a better indication (but still not perfect) of how teams are tracking and everyone will put alot in it before the week off, before Round 1

  8. Cripps must have felt a bit lost in the Charity match… with all those blokes running around doing his job for him … my biggest concern is the mounting toll on his body in the regular season… will he play 20+ games this season?

    1. He didn’t do enough for a round one spot, but he also didn’t do so little it’s out of the question. Marsh game 2 with a stronger side should make it clearer.
