Game Chat – Fremantle v Sydney

Written by Thommo on July 20 2019

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Saturday July 20, 6.10pm AWST

What it means for Fremantle: Finals are all but out of reach, but there is still a lot to play for. The Dockers have a poor record finishing seasons in recent years and a fifth straight loss would pile more pressure on the club and coach Ross Lyon.

What it means for Sydney: While going down to Carlton sounded the death knell for the Swans’ top-eight chances, throwing in the towel isn’t in Sydney’s DNA and newly re-signed coach John Longmire won’t want his side to limp towards the finish line with a third straight loss.

The stat: Sydney has dominated the Dockers since going down in a gruelling 2015 qualifying final at Subiaco. The Swans have won the past three contests by an average of 84 points, and Fremantle has managed paltry totals of 52, 39 and 47 points in those meetings.

The match-up: Rory Lobb v Dane Rampe

The Swans’ ruck crisis means Aliir Aliir will be forced out of the backline and Rampe (No.15 ranked small/medium defender by Official AFL Player Ratings) could give away 19cm on Lobb if they match up on Saturday night. Forecast rain could help Rampe’s cause against Lobb, who is rated the League’s 11th-best ruckman but is set to play permanent forward with Aaron Sandilands and Sean Darcy in the side.

It’s a big week for: Ross Lyon

It’s getting hotter in the kitchen for the Dockers’ senior coach after four straight losses left his side languishing in 13th on the ladder. Another defeat at home – which would be Fremantle’s fourth against the five teams currently below them on the ladder – would raise more questions about Lyon’s future heading towards the final season of his contract in 2020.

Thommo’s Tips: Sydney by 20 points.

    1. “Gawn (playing in the NT worries me)”

      Gawn interstate avg since 2016: 130.26 from 23 (3/23 below 100, 14/23 120+)
      2016 Interstate Avg: 149.86 from 7
      2017 Interstate Avg: 110.25 from 4
      2018 Interstate Avg: 133.71 from 7
      2019 Interstate Avg: 114 from 5

14 times M Gawn has scored 120+ interstate with 12 of those 14 being 140+’s.

      1. It wasn’t the interstate that worries me I know he can play outside of VIC it was NT and the weather of NT quiet often being alot warmer and humid..

But thank you adam the stats are definately still relevant in a way and will take it into consideration 🙂

            1. this will be the dilemma of many silly enough to take the VC off Brodie (myself included – so shitty at myself as it has stayed with Gawn / Grundy all year and been perfect) – go for Gawn or go for Danger … do the Hawks have a good tagger??

        2. I left the C off Gawn for the fact that Preuss is in the team. Tends to put his score at around 120 rather than his usual 140-150.

  1. Sorry for jumping on the thread off topic guys, but Amateur hour question here: If I have two emergencies selected in the forward line and one of those emergencies doesn’t play, do I get the playing emergencies score for a non-playing forward?

    T/U: yes that’s correct
T/D: No it subs in the zero of the non playing emg.

  2. there’s some massive early scaling going on with the scores here ATM – Ryan’s score has jumped more than 30 points in the last minute or two and Heeney just went from 61 to 88 … without doing anything for it …

      1. nah mate – it wasn’t from that – the scores were low across the board and they started scaling them early — Bewley was on about 66 at that stage and he started going backwards in 1s and 2s … as an example.

For those that put up the thumbs down, actually try sitting and watching games with the live scores and you will see how poor the scoring systems are … i’m not the only one who comments …

It is a rubbish system where they have a maximum number of points per game and score people highly early on and then remove scores from “lesser known players” later .. they should just plain and simply score every player for every thing that they do … that is fairest then ,… for everyone … the way it works now is no more than a lottery and clearly favourable scoring to certain players …
