Game Chat – Geelong v Brisbane

Written by Motts on July 9 2020

Where and when: Thursday 7:40pm at the SCG.

Last time they met:

Saturday August 17, 2019

Brisbane 10.15 (75) def Geelong 10.14 (74) at the Gabba. (The game where Linc McCarthy marked with 90 seconds remaining and the Lions 4 points down then slotted it from 30m out).

What it means for Geelong: Going for a hat-trick, a strong win would see the Cats usurp the Lions’ second spot on the ladder.

What it means for Brisbane: After knocking off the ladder-leading Power last week, this is an opportunity for the Lions to further prove their credentials as a September November footy team.

Mottsy Watch: Neale will VC a TON of teams tonight including Mottsy’s. Mottsy will be cheering him on from the couch. Mottsy loves a third person reference.

Mottsy’s Tip: Anyone who’s been following my tips knows just how sh*t I am at this game. For those looking to lay whatever I put here: Brisbane by 15.

  1. whats the story with atu for the pies?
seems to be the flavour of the round atm…

with brown, rowell gould, brander, rivers, noble and possibly pickett all out I need two rookies too pick up this week or im copping donuts…

can we throw some options around please and thank you!

PS. danger with the VC tonight

    1. I’m in a similar situation to you in terms of backline budget/rookie players. I was fortunate enough to have some extra cash in the bank so I was able to upgrade tyler brown to Nick Haynes (via DPP with Rivers).

If you have no money in the bank, I would recommend:

Out: Rowell, Brown (Least job security with most cash)
In: Premo/Mid price defender (I like the look of Callum Mills but its a bit of a gamble) and Aarts in the forward line via DPP if possible.

Pickett is listed this week so you should have the midfield cover to put rivers on your bench. If you are still left with a donut in the backline with this trade, you might just have to cop it. There are no good value rookie defenders this week unfortunately, plus Brander should recover by next week and he has relatively good job security.

      Hope this helps!

    2. Hey Mav – Aarts and Bennell are both on the bubble and should score reasonably well. I think they’re the standout downgrade options this week.

      1. should I be grabbing ridley while his still good value chillo?

        Rowell too ridley?

Or focus on doubling down on bennell and aarts?

        1. I prefer the downgrade options next week, so bring in a premium this week if you can afford to.

I passed on Ridley though – don’t trust him to keep going

  3. 1st trade will be trade out ROWELL and trade in AARTS
Other trade to cover donut in backline – options are :

TU – Trade out NOBLE, trade in J LLOYD
TD – Trade out T BROWN, trade in HAYNES/RIDLEY (can’t afford Lloyd with this option)

  4. RIP everyone who picked Duncan, off for the night guaranteed.

    Also can anyone kick straight?

  5. Lions would never lose if they could kick straight. Couple weeks ago Neale and McCluggae literally combined for 2.13 and tonight’s 2.6 is also pretty dirty.

  6. To think Berry was delisted by the Suns….LOL.

Such a good pick up by the Lions.

  7. Last Quarter Geelong will struggle to keep up with the intensity with 2 mids down. The Lions Will run away with it. Neale will still go big.

    1. Just praying he has a big last quarter and can push up to a 50ish score and be somewhat respectable

  10. Looks like a shocking start to round for me. I can take a small positive of Sam Simpson having a great game as a 124k midfielder. Hopefully he can keep his spot with these Geelong injuries

    1. Scarlett said before the game that they played him because it was a wide ground & it gave him more room to run up & back

      1. I assume as Duncan their go to winger went down so early he probably took his place.
His last game was Rd 17 2018 then 2nd last was rd22 2017

    1. Was really hoping last week was a one off, couldnt trade this week due to injuries so looks like a must trade this week unless injuries strike

    2. Looped, but Hamill goes on field, so if he can get his average I’ll gain an extra 6 points!

  11. Take Neale’s VC score? Or go Grundy Vs the Hawks?

    TU – take Neale’s score
    TD – go Grundy

    Cheers.
