Game Chat – GWS v Sydney

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on February 29 2020

Where and when: Blacktown International Sportspark, Saturday 29 February, 4.10pm AEDT

Watchlist:

Lachlan ASH (GWS) DEF/MID @ $193,800

Drafted at #4 and confirmed for R1 action by coach Leon Cameron, Ash was expected to add some jets to GWS’ half-back line but instead has found his way into the guts today. Will be a good test.

Tom GREEN (GWS) MID @ $166,800

Rated the best contested ball-winning junior ever recorded by Champion Data. While the GWS midfield is notoriously tough to break into, a stellar performance today could improve his chances.

Jordan DAWSON (SYD) DEF/FWD @ $467,800

A popular pre-season pick after a strong finish 2019 by seemingly stealing Lloyd’s thunder. Starting him will purely come down to the role he plays, having had stints on the wing, up forward and at half-back. Lloyd’s absence today probably won’t give us a full picture however.

Dylan STEPHENS (SYD) MID @ $189,300

The #5 draft pick emerges as the Swans’ leading candidate for the wingman role. Hefty price tag will require him to replicate his stunning SANFL form over the Marsh Series.

Will GOULD (SYD) DEF @ $117,300

Perhaps the only pick everyone has in the DEF line at the moment. Big bodied general defender with elite intercepting ability. Hopefully he can secure himself a spot.

Notable Absentees: Stephen CONIGLIO (GWS), Zac WILLIAMS (GWS), Lachie WHITFIELD (GWS), Josh KELLY (GWS), Jake LLOYD (SYD), Isaac HEENEY (SYD).

    1. From a light bump really, exposed a structural or pre-existing problem. Just looked so brittle.

And here I am starting 2, maybe 3, GWS premos. Ugh.

  1. Like I mentioned in the watchlist, all the absences mean we can’t read too much into this game.

GWS rookies are getting plenty of it through the middle but there’s no Whitfield, Kelly, Coniglio, Ward or Williams and now no Taranto.

Then Dawson’s popping off rn and Gould looks solid, but Lloyd isn’t playing and Rampe doesn’t look like he’ll play either.

    Hmm.

  2. My thoughts exactly. It opens the door for a young mid-fielder to get some game time. (But bad luck to Taranto though 🙁

    1. Looks like Hately may have already sewn that up, with a 62 point first half. 🙁

      L Ash ( 40 ) and T Greene ( 50 ) looking good.

Greene may get a start, if Wards not ready, but will be on shakey ground I feel.

The swans look a rabble , Sorry HH.

      1. Yeah. A few players out, but that applies to GWS too.

One is a grand finalist and one was well clear of the eight, so there is no surprises there.

The Swans are in full rebuild phase, with what the second youngest list? Their best 22 isn’t that bad, but their “depth” is basically all second and third round draft picks who have been in the system and not done much for a couple of years.

Given a good run with injuries, we could maybe scrape into the 8 at best and then expect to go out in straight sets.

Time to be brutally honest about it, give the kids a good run and then be pretty harsh with list management.

Some of their recruiting strategy, like Sam Gray, was a total mystery to me.

I assume this is correct, that’s great news

  4. For those looking at the cheap ruck options, does Sam Naismith now come into calculations? ROB 2.0 (or 2020)?

    1. I’m seriously considering him, rejigged the team last night for him.

At 206 cm and 108kg he’s basically a Gawn or Witts sized ruck, and for that he’s way underpriced.

But of course, you don’t buy SuperCoach players by the inch or by the pound, but by their points… Which is what he repeatedly fails to serve up.

  5. Tackle free game. Be wary of taking anything out of this game.

Dawson had a game high of seven (7) tackles with no clearances, obviously the ball being in the back half of the Swans back half.

  6. ‘evening folks…….what the f#*k did I miss!?!?!?
…..at least it confirmed my info about Dawson and Gould!?!?
    …….maybe????

    Any value in:

    TU Ash
    TD Greene

  7. I think TT’s injury will open the door to Hately, but it may give Green a small sniff too.
