Game Chat – GWS vs St Kilda

Written by Huttabito on July 28 2018

WHERE AND WHEN: Spotless Stadium, Saturday, July 28, 4.35pm AEST

SUMMARY
Greater Western Sydney’s early season form slump started with a draw against the Saints in round five, but Leon Cameron’s team is almost unrecognisable from that disappointing game at Etihad Stadium. Josh Kelly, Toby Greene, Brett Deledio and Adam Kennedy have returned to the senior side from long-term injuries and have been influential in helping the Giants win six of their past seven games. St Kilda’s scoring continues to be a worry with Jade Gresham (30) and Tim Membrey (23) the only two players with more than 13 goals this season, and with Phil Davis and Heath Shaw leading a miserly Giants defence, both will need more assistance. The Giants are coming off a tough match against Port Adelaide on the road and off a six-day break, so the Saints might give themselves a chance to start well and cause an upset. With positions inside the top eight extremely tight with five rounds remaining, St Kilda will be keen to cause some headaches on the run home.

LAST FIVE MEETINGS

R7, 2017, St Kilda 16.12 (108) d Greater Western Sydney 12.13 (85) at Etihad
R5, 2016, Greater Western Sydney 19.12 (126) d St Kilda 12.7 (79) at Etihad

    1. yeh , Shaw 43 , full backs shouldn’t get pts for kicking to them self out of the goal square after a point is scored ..

    1. He’ll be great if/when he moves permanently into the midfield. He spent a lot of time there this preseason and looked very good doing it.

    2. agree with Salamander, needs more MID-time. he’s great around the contest when it comes inside 50 quickly, as it does against the Giants (always seem to match up well) but too inconsistent for SC just yet. Acres on the other hand …

  3. VC Danger has failed. What to do now?

    TU: Mitchell (likely vs Banfield)
TD: Cripps (will probably be tagged by someone, but that never seems to bother him)

    1. No one will know til next week. If named there is always the risk of late withdraw. Nasty knee to the head and has concussion.

      1. Yeah you are right Hutta. It makes me nervous and SC finals start next week. I might consider trading him to Brayshaw during the week depending on what other trades I need to do.

      1. He’s a gun. Started with him, and then traded him out when he was having some ‘down’ weeks. One of my biggest regret trades of the year. Still one of my fave young guns in the comp. Cool, calm, collected and the draft hype wasn’t lying about the engine on the kid. The starting price for next year might make it a tough decision, and there was an article this week where Leon stated that Taranto is an excellent ‘role player’. But I’d love to assume that he will be one we will all talk about next pre-season as getting more ‘on-ball’ time. He’s certainly worthy of the hype.

    1. think he’ll still be a MID/FWD but if he carries on averaging 88.4 he’ll be priced close to $491.3k. at season’s start. That might be a little rich for me to start him.

  6. Saints kick 10 pts in the 1st 1/2 ,
how much of Shaws 68 pts have come from a kick to himself & then a long kick ,
    what a SC fake ..

    1. we all know the rules. that’s why people still pick him (for cheap points) and why Fake Lloyd scores so many SC points that have little or no impact on the actual game.

    1. big article/interview on him in the Age last week. there’s a lot to like mate. especially his attitude.

      1. don’t know if anyone else reads the Age, but it is uncanny how they do a big piece on a given player every week, and that player always seems to score 20+ on his ave., the following week.
