Game Chat – Melbourne vs St Kilda

Written by Thommo on August 29 2020

Where and when: Traegar Park, Alice Springs, Saturday 29 August, 7:40pm (AEST)

Last time they met: Rd 19, 2019: St Kilda 15.14 (104) def Melbourne 13.7 (85) at Marvel

What it means to Melbourne and St Kilda: This is a huge clash for both sides and it will tell us which of these teams are the biggest pretenders. While the Saints may still make finals if they lose, they might as well not bother with finals if they can’t defeat Melbourne. If the Dees lose, they risk losing touch with the top 8.

Both these teams have a history of rolling over when the pressure is on. Who has turned over a new leaf in 2020?

Supercoach Watch: Gawn is back! Also Oliver, Petracca and Viney are suiting up for many squads. A few cash-strapped teams have also traded in Stephen May. For the Saints, Steele is on fire of late, Marshall is in a few SC teams and I noticed a few teams are still rocking Butler.

Thommo Watch: Mostly because I forgot to trade him, I still have Max Gawn. I hope he can repay the faith!

Thommo’s Tip: Saints by 15 points.

    1. My son has the same dilemma but as he is only trying to win cash leagues he has deferred captain choice till tomorrow knowing he can take Mitchell or just match opposition’s captain for the win.
Score doesn’t really matter….just beating the opposition score whatever that may be.
      He is ranked 2k something

      1. Nice, Ayden.

Definitely in the minority there. Think it was untenable for most to hold. Nice POD score incoming for you, good stuff.

  2. good to see CD looking after the score for Gawn … 4 possessions, with 11 hitouts and 75%DE and 67 points … seriously …

    2. You’ve omitted a goal, two clutch spoils, two clearances, four contested possessions and a big pack mark, Macca. Gawn’s score about right, been huge imo.

      1. yeah I know the goal is there – the hitouts on several instances as Jo indicates above are extremely debatable – the mark is the CP as are some of the hitouts – it’s over inflated and scaled … clearances don’t get any points … and there is no score that they show us for spoils … it’s purely at the behest of how CD choose to score .. . compare how well he has been scored to Goldies last match … or Phillips or NicNat the last few days … there some real subjectivity on how players in key roles are being scored … and we’ve all said it over the years there are clear favourites!!

We’ll see how it ends up …

what I will say is that he is doing well to stay on the field so long … he looks spent already … and the Saints boys said they were going to try and run him into the ground …

        1. and just in those last couple of minutes, clear case where Marshall won the hitout down and it was paid to Gawn and his score went up, nothing to Marshall ,.. he then dropped back into defence and the kick came in ..contested by players in front of Gawn … the ball dropped into his hands at the back, he had nothing to do with contest etc … he gave a lttle handball backwards – based on scoring that should only get 1.5 points – he went up 4 points … went up 2 points for the hitout that wasn’t his …

  3. My double emergency loophole has been closed off. They are now using the lesser of the two emergency numbers than the greater that they were doing four rounds ago in the last byes that we had. Should have just stayed quiet.

      1. That was always the thinking and that was what it is during normal scoring but when I tested it 4 weeks ago the opposite happened and I’ve gone back to those scores 4 weeks ago and they’ve reverse that as well, so my whole strategy was based upon what happened 4 weeks ago and now they’ve changed it. Rightly or Wrongly it is unfair to have one thing happen one week and a different thing happen a few weeks later.

  4. Oliver just jumped from 72 to 93!! How … no goals etc … edit and now jumped again to 101!!! … and again, scoring system going haywire ,… Oliver then dropped to 98 and back up again to 105 … with only 1 handball change …

    1. the crazy scoring on Oliver was in those last few minutes … i have no idea what was happening … scaling has been happening all through the game, but yes, normally when players kick a goal at the death that essentially wins the game, they get a massive boost in scoring … not sure it happened for Tracc though … they may have already given out too many points …

    2. final scaling through now it seems … Gawn back to 135
Oliver jumped again from 125 to 134 – Olivers score in those last few minutes went from 72 to 134 … crazy
Tracc went to 127 – think he was on 117
      Viney 68 to 73
Steele jumped to 151 – think he was on 141 or 144
Rivers for those with went from 66 to 68

    1. Play Simpkin. Worst case scenario is a 70 which costs you 25 points. Most likely is 95-110. However, against GC he’s a 150 chance so you never know.

Tu Captain fantastic loves playing the Pies
TD Reg will serve up PittinAY a lesson in ruck work

*** SEN interview .. Bob Murphy & Andy Maher talking to Pittonet fri arvo..
Mr Pittonet Senior is not sure himself how to pronounce his name as lineage is fuzzy
Bob: well if your playing in the AFL its PittonAY , if your in the two’s, it’s PittonETT ! Pittonet: Im happy with that ! haha
