Game Chat – Sydney v Gold Coast

Written by Thommo on June 29 2019

Where and when: SCG, Saturday June 29, 4.35pm AEST

What it means for Sydney: With four wins from their past six matches the Swans are incredibly still in the finals race, but they must be just about perfect for the rest of the year. They’ll also be keen for some revenge after being embarrassed by Gold Coast at home last season.

What it means for Gold Coast: After nine losses in a row the Suns desperately need a win to give them a boost for the rest of the season. They caused the upset of the year at the SCG 12 months ago so it’s not out of the question.

The stat: After dominating the opening term and booting 6.4 in round 18 last season, the Swans kicked 2.12 for the rest of the match as they were overrun by Gold Coast. The Suns kicked 11.11 to win by 24 points.

The match-up: Tom Papley v Lachie Weller
Both players are in fantastic form with Papley leading the Swans’ goalkicking with 23 majors this season, and Weller providing the Suns with dash off half-back. Papley is Sydney’s barometer inside 50 with his speed but Weller is just as damaging with his pace and ball use, so it should be a fantastic battle.

It’s a big week for: Sam Reid
With superstar Lance Franklin missing again with injury, Reid is the man who must provide the Swans with a target deep inside 50. He’s had a quiet couple of weeks but there’s no better time to stand up and show the way for his young teammates with Franklin out.

Big call: Recruit Daniel Menzel is still trying to find his form but the former Geelong forward will have a breakout game as a Swan and boot six goals for the first time in his career.

Thommo’s Tip: Sydney by 20 points.

    1. Seems not. But I wasn’t expecting a huge one. Premo DEFs don’t tend to score well against the Suns. Dunno why but it’s a fact!

  2. Heeney, although it seems injury affected, is probably most disappointing premo type this season .
Stuck by him all year, stuck with him all season i guess.

    1. Ditto. All four midpricers were better decisions than starting him over Kelly.
Williams and Moore – still have them both
      Libba & BSmith – overdelivered.
He has underwhelmed by some distance, but you have to think what might’ve been if it hasn’t been for THAT ankle injury in the JLT?!

    1. Using Rampe. Has been spending more time up the ground. He tends to go big later on (4th Qtr). Shame it’s not a tighter contest.

  3. Heeney and Lloyd?
If their scores were the other way around I’d be tempted to dump Heeney! Alas, you can forgive the Bondi seagull one bad game!

    1. Luke Parker and Jake Lloyd will have huge BEs next week for anyone who wants to pick either up in a couple of weeks!
