Game Chat – Western Bulldogs v Melbourne

Written by Father Dougal on July 14 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Sunday, July 14, 3.20pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 17, 2018: Melbourne 18.11 (119) defeated Western Bulldogs 10.9 (69)

What it means for Western Bulldogs: After knocking off the Cats, Luke Beveridge’s men sit at 7-8 and are still in striking distance of a finals spot. All this team needs is a sniff.

What it means for Melbourne: A chance to regain some respect. Sitting in 16th place, the Demons have won two out of their last three games and have a real shot at four points this week.

The stat: Aaron Naughton sits level with Richmond’s Tom Lynch in first place in the competition for contested marks. The young forward has taken 33 for the season so far.

The match-up: Clayton Oliver v Jack Macrae

The Official AFL Player Ratings have Oliver and Macrae sixth and 10th-ranked players in the competition this year. Could we see the two ball magnets go head-to-head at Marvel Stadium?

It’s a big week for: Christian Petracca

The young Demon has hit form, averaging 20 disposals and 1.5 goals per game across the last eight matches. With Tom McDonald set to miss the rest of the season, Petracca will have to produce more as marking target.

Father Dougal’s Tip: Bulldogs by 6 points.

  1. Probably more appropriate than GWS v tiges thread.
    Captain:
    TU: Gawn (injury a worry?)
    TD: macrae

    1. If you’re already winning your match-ups, stick with Grundy, otherwise you could roll the dice on Gawn.

Even if Gawn goes 160, you’re only 23 points better off than Grundy. However he could easily aggravate his ankle in the first quarter and you’ll be 100 points down.

        1. Do the math Troo Roo
          137 X 2 = 274 + 160 = 434
          160 X 2 = 320 + 137 = 457
          That’s 23 pts difference!

          21

          0
        2. Incorrect TrooRoo.

If a coach has both Grundy and Gawn and Gawn hypothetically scores 160 in comparison to Grundy’s 137 there is only a 23 point differential.

          Grundy as C=137+137+160= 434
          Gawn as C=160+160+137= 457

          457-434=23

        3. If you have both players in your team

          Grundy 137×2 +Gawn 160 = 434 points
          Gawn 160×2 +Grundy 137 = 457 points

+23 Points better off if Gawn scores 160

  2. Who to captain:
TU: Macrae or Gawn (He’s playing the Dogs! but coming off injury and with Pruess)
    TD: Neale (Likes playing Port)

  3. OH NO! Here I was thinking I could use Hinge to take VC Gawn’s score but I’ve just realized he’s on the bench and I can’t use him. F*ck.

Looks like I’m going with C Neale.

    1. Libber being out has helped the other dog midfielders.

Once English bulks up a bit, they’re midfield is going to be brutal.

  5. brought in bont for kelly this week
figured it was a safe bet
    with an av of 115 & a 3 Rd av of 128
watch him drop to an 80 pt average now

    1. Naah Bonts is a burst player man, he’ll have 40 point qtr and ton up. I’ve had him for a few weeks now.

They’ll tag Dunks now and he’ll step up.

Dog’s midfield is like whack-a-mole, can’t shut them all out.

    1. For once I ignored thumbs and held Kelly!

Greene and Dunks may just get me over the line Adam. By my current calculations, you’ll win by one point!!!

  6. Gawn slowing down is making me hate myself a little less for butchering the VC/C on him.

  7. might go with merrett next , seasons over anyway
sure hes weak as p….. & only scores 80’s against tough or top 8 teams
but at least his out side receiver game style stops him gett’n injured
& no one bothers tagg’n the wuss either

  8. I brought Josh dunkley In when he was 450k in round 7. He had a highest score of 94. Huge punt, don’t think it’s paid off enough. Was expecting 150 average, 130 isn’t good enough….

  12. Gotta wonder about the competency of GWS fitness , medical & rehab staff
injuries have been their defining trait every year
no good hav’n the best kids if they cant get em all on the park together
wonder what the review of internal departments is like up there

  15. Biggest error this season was selecting Westhoff over Dunkley in RD8 and after today’s performance the differential will likely now be to the tune of 500+ points.

Also congrats to allsaints for the win against me in the SCT Contributors League.
His PODS today: T Greene, J Dunkley, S Lycett currently on 385 with a half and scaling to go.

My PODS today: H Andrews, R Gray, J Westhoff currently on 96 with the 2nd half to come.

    1. Thanks Adam. After Friday night, figured I was done. As I said to Macca, it’s amazing what happens when you just walk away from it. A whole lot of luck that’s all.
Dunkley I’ll take, as I started him and held him, like Moore 🙁 but Greene was streaky to benefit from others’ misfortune. Namely Cogs and his owners.
Plenty to sort this week, as ever. Good luck mate.
