Early prognosis

Small defender Brown won’t be available until at least round six due to an ankle injury. He will have surgery later this week. Gibbs and Talia are expected to play in Friday’s JLT Community Series game against Greater Western Sydney after both missed last weekend’s win over Port Adelaide. Greenwood and Mackay are also on track to return for their first game of the pre-season, either for the AFL game or a SANFL trial against Norwood on Friday night. Knight jammed his foot against the Power and will be assessed this week. – Lee Gaskin

Some good news on the horizon with Christensen due back from his sprained ankle. The clever utility suffered the injury in Brisbane’s intraclub match last month and is now back into full training. Curnow looks likely to be fine, despite leaving JLT1 with a corked calf. Fasolo is set to play his first game for the club in JLT2, having recovered quickly from a broken arm. Kreuzer is also an outside chance to play Collingwood, having recently undergone minor knee surgery, but looks a certainty to be fit for round one regardless. However Marchbank, Lang, Macreadie and Williamson have already been ruled out of the side’s season-opening clash with Richmond. – Riley Beveridge

Dunn and Broomhead aren’t far away from full training, while Wells has made a breakthrough in his recovery from the Lisfranc injury that sidelined him for the bulk of last season. A longer-term view will be taken with Scharenberg as he comes back from a third knee reconstruction. – Ben Collins

Hooker injured the soleus muscle in his calf at training and is now expected to miss up to six weeks. It follows an interrupted pre-season with a niggling hamstring complaint. Shiel (quad) should play against Geelong in the club’s second JLT Community Series, while Fantasia (quad) should also face the Cats. Jok (concussion) has been ruled out for the game with some symptoms still lingering. – Ben Guthrie

Fyfe is pushing to play in the final JLT Community Series clash against West Coast this Sunday after an elbow operation, while recruit Conca and young ruckman Darcy should also be very close to playing. The Dockers aren’t sure on Sandilands‘ timeframe to return from his latest calf trouble and have their fingers crossed Bennell can build his workload back up after another recent calf scare. Switkowski’s history of hamstring woes came back to haunt him against Collingwood, and a prognosis is unknown at this stage, while Hill’s hopes of appearing in round one were dashed by another quad setback at training last week. – Travis King

Taylor will be monitored ahead of Thursday night after suffering a head knock in the first term against West Coast last week. Tuohy’s knee complaint has him touch and go for round one, clocking up big hours of cross-training in the gym. After overcoming back concerns, Smith has succumbed to a knee injury that will rule him out of contention for the season opener. Cockatoo continues to build his fitness base, looking to avoid any soft tissue hiccups. Fogarty’s hip surgery has him eyeing a return in the first month of the season. – Mitch Cleary

Lemmens was the only fresh injury from the win over the Bulldogs, getting his ankle caught awkwardly in a tackle during the game’s final minute. With the Suns staying in North Queensland an extra day for their community camp, the scans have been pushed back another day. Holman has been troubled by his back for most of the pre-season but is almost right to be considered for selection.– Michael Whiting

Greene is a chance to return in GWS’s second JLT Community Series game against Adelaide on Friday night, but even if he doesn’t play the Giants have little doubt he’ll be fit for their round clash against Essendon. Haynes, however, remains touch and go for the season opener as he continues to recover from a back complaint. Langdon will make a delayed start to the season after injuring a Lisfranc joint at training last week, while Patton will fly to Philadelphia within the next fortnight to continue his recovery from his third knee reconstruction. The key forward has resumed running and his US trip is primarily designed to break up the drudgery of his lengthy rehabilitation. Barring last-minute hiccups, Tomlinson (calf) and Kelly (knee and hip) will play their first games of the year on Friday night against the Crows. – Nick Bowen

Mirra (ankle) and Worpel (knee) both suffered minor complaints against the Lions but both will be available to play this weekend. Hall escaped serious injury when St Kilda ruckman Lewis Pierce fell across his left knee last Saturday, but the midfielder pulled up sore and remains in doubt for North’s second JLT Community Series game against Port Adelaide. Anderson and Garner are in contention to play their first games of 2019 but must first show they have overcome hamstring niggles. Tarrant remains lineball to be fit for North’s round one clash against Fremantle, but the key defender is making encouraging progress in his recovery from AC joint surgery. Durdin is maintaining fitness ahead of his eventual return as he continues to train with a guard on the little finger he accidentally cut. Co-captain Wines and key forward Dixon will miss the start of the season. The Power are hopeful they’ll be available in the first month of the competition. Vice-captain Hartlett will need to get a couple of runs under his belt in the SANFL before returning from a torn ACL. Ruckman Ryder rolled his ankle in the JLT Community Series game against Adelaide last weekend, but the injury isn’t expected to be serious. A few changes in Richmond’s injury list, with Caddy now looking highly unlikely to play round one as he battles an ankle complaint. Star recruit Lynch will also be racing against the clock, with the club having erred on the side of caution with his rehab this summer. Premiership “ruckman” and winger Grigg has had problems with his knee and has been ruled out until at least round three. It’s a structural issue in his knee that’s causing problems with kicking, rather than running. Castagna, Garthwaite and Townsend remain on track for selection in rounds one or two. – Sarah Black

Young gun Florent hurt a foot in last Saturday’s loss to Greater Western Sydney. Franklin increased his training in the past week as he aims for a round one return. Reliable defender Smith isn’t back with the main group yet as he deals with a hamstring complaint. Jones and Jack are doing everything and both are in line to face Gold Coast on Sunday. McVeigh didn’t play last week as the Swans manage the 33-year-old’s workload but is a reasonable chance to take the field against the Suns. Cameron is dealing with a knee niggle sustained in the Swans’ practice match against Greater Western Sydney a fortnight ago. – Dinny Navaratnam

St Kilda… That’s a loooong list!
apart from Carlisle and Steven, admittedly two huge OUTs, the rest are/were to be expected, or will be back soon.
Shouldn’t look SO bad in a couple of weeks … here’s hoping
