Key defender Alex Keath will be assessed after missing the win against the Kangaroos with hamstring tightness. Skipper Taylor Walker had surgery on the plantar fascia in his foot earlier this week, while defender Kyle Hartigan had minor operations on both knees. Howe could finally return from a badly corked thigh that required surgery, and would bolster the Pies’ defence for their final-round clash with Fremantle in Perth. Murray was a late withdrawal for personal reasons and it is yet to be seen whether he will be ready to resume. Goldsack is odds-on to make a rapid comeback in the VFL, likely in defence given injuries, and could be joined by ApplebyMoore won’t return until at least the first week of finals and Treloar holds out hope of making it back, but ElliottReidScharenbergDunnWellsand Broomhead won’t play again this season. Early prognosis

Roughead returns this week and Ceglar and Henderson should be picked as well, so the reinforcements have arrived at precisely the right time. But the Hawks are being patient with Sicily and have not rushed him back for this week’s game against the Swans, which was always going to be hugely important. Birchall was supposed to resume this week but won’t, suggesting the chances of seeing him at AFL level this year are now low. – Ashley Browne

Updated: Monday, August 20

Early prognosis

The Tigers will look to bring back as many of their starting 22 as possible this week after the careful management of minor ailments over the last two weeks. Cotchin and Astbury will return while Prestia is a good chance but will be conservatively treated given his interrupted season. They should have Lambert available over the bye weekend while Butler may be a little longer given he last played in round 16. Castagna finished the win over the Bombers with a sore quad that stemmed from a second quarter incident and will no doubt be sore this week but is expected to be available. The VFL team had a bye so there were no fresh injuries reported there. – Jennifer Phelan

Franklin will be given every chance to face his former side and while his ability to play off little training preparation has been solid this season, if he does have a slight groin niggle, he’s unlikely to be risked. Johnson had a traditional reconstruction on his right knee on Tuesday in Melbourne. – Adam Curley
