Last Minute Team Picker 2020

Written by Father Dougal on March 19 2020

Hi Everybody!

If you do not have a team, and want to play this year, this is your guide to a team that may not be brilliant but shouldn’t hurt you either. I’m assuming you are short on time, and so we’ll just go right in to what to do without a lot of why. Later I’ll talk about good alternatives if you want to change things around. Which you can always do anyways!

This does take the 17 game season into account, as well as early price rises.

Guys I think are options but not my first or safest choices in () after the suggested choices. If the guys in () spud up don’t complain to me!

Here we go!

RUCKS

Put Grundy at R1 and Xerry at R2. Put Gawn at R3.  PUT AN “E” ON GAWN NOW! Make Grundy the VC Now! Make Xerry the C Now!

DEFENDERS

Pick one of Rory, Laird, and James Sicily (Luke Ryan)

Pick one of Dan Houston and Brody Smith (Jack Crisp, Jordan Dawson)

Pick Sam Docherty (Jeremy Howe)

Pick Two out of: Dylan Roberton Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Lachlan Ash, John Noble.

Pick Bailey Williams, Will Gould, and Tobe Watson. One on field, two on the bench, put an E one on of them

MIDFIELDERS

Pick Four of:  Jack Macrae, Lachie Neale, Nat Fyfe, Josh Kelly, Patrick Cripps, Josh Dunkley, Patrick Dangerfield, and Marcus Bontempelli.

Pick Clayton Oliver

Pick Matt Rowell

Pick Ton Green

PIck Marlion Pickett

On the bench pick Connor Budarick, Deven Robertson, and Jack Mahoney Put an E on one of them

FORWARDS

Pick Dustin Martin

Pick  Devon Smith

Pick Jack Stevens

Pick Andrew Brayshaw. (the Docker, not the other one!)

Pick Jarrod Brander, Curtis Taylor, and Max King Issak Rankine. Two go on the bench and two go on the field. Put an E on one of the bench players.

Save the team.

If you have picked the most expensive possible set of players, you should have $33,800 left. I suggest keeping that.

If you are all saved and the Es and CV and C are set up, you can fiddle if you like. You may have cash to upgrade someone. This part is up to you.

A thing some people like, which you can do if you want, is to put Naismith at R3 in place of Gawn, and use the cash from that downgrade to upgrade elsewhere. To be safe, I’d turn a forward (Any of them) into Jon Ceglar so you have a real backup to Naismith.

Note for later: if Xerry gets named, you can either swap him for Charlie Comben to keep the loophole, or you can move him to the forward line and turn Max King into Charlie Comben. Or you can go without a loophole if you want to. I suggest anyone who is not pretty experienced have a loophole around, but if you don’t have one, odds are one shows up anyway before too long. Xerry will end up playing most likely at some point, but by then someone else probably won’t be. For gosh sakes don’t let your R2 play and keep Gawn on the bench at R3.

And remember, when the teams drop, be ready to move rookies in and out depending on who is named! Some cash on hand will help with that.

If you really don’t have time to think or don’t trust yourself to choose, here is what I would select from the above team if I was making it for someone else.

Thanks for reading, and good luck!

P.S.  Just found out that Pies rookie midfielder Tyler Brown has been announced as debuting. Probably should go onto the midfield bench. Push Mahoney forward and drop King.

And that Jack Steven is out for Round 1. Unless you can’t afford to, I’d consider Tom Lynch.

  1. Call me old fashioned but I hate what supercoach has become with this sort of stuff. Go back a few years and you had to do the research yourself by watching the pre season games, looking at the previous seasons stats and researching the draft.
Now people who have no idea literally get told who to pick and end up with the same team as the people who take it seriously.

Yes, it’s all about trades, downgrades and upgrades yadda yadda yadda but still.

Nothing against you FD, you do God’s work but just my opinion.

  2. Does anyone have any insight into Rankine? He’s definitely a lock as a forward rookie, but I wonder about his scoring capacity on field? I’d prefer him on the bench, but if pickings get really slim and we’re force to go with both Sturt and King, that probably pushes Rankine onto the field.

    1. Hmm… just watched the links Salamander posted in his team reveal. Maybe on field for Rankine might be worth a shot.

    2. Played only 3 games in the NEAFL last season, averaged 8 kicks, 4 handballs, 1.66 Mark’s, 4.33 tackles and 1.33 goals which gave him a dream team average of 62.28. Certainly not elite numbers for the neafl but he should play most games for goldy this year

      1. I think the season before he averaged 70 odd on the SANFL as a underaged player. He is a special talent, no doubt….But his position won’t bring great scores. Still worth a bench spot I reckon, if not named he will be my loophole

  3. The great unanswerable question this year is do you pick a team expecting a “full” 17 round season, or do you try to anticipate an even shorter run? Guns ‘n’ Rookies will almost always be the superior strategy in the long-term, but if you don’t think there will be a long term…

That’s why I refuse to be critical of anyone’s team selection this year, no matter how nutty it might seem on first glance.

    1. I concur. Am taking way more punts than usual as I feel that’ll be the best way to extract the most fun out of it in 2020. Priorities in order are
      #1: Enjoyment
      #2: Rank
      #3: Beating rivals
