Mid-priced Madness or Forward Thinking?

Written by Chillo on March 10 2020

Olie wants to know how many of these much-discussed budget forward options you’re rolling with this year. I have seen sides that have completely ignored the premium options up front this year and loaded up on sub-$500K players…but remember that sometimes players can be mid-priced for a reason….

Which mid-priced forwards are you starting with in 2020? (up to four selections)

  1. Ben Long 283k fwd will play as the distributor for the saints along with Roberton I think he will average 80-90 which is good enough for me.

    1. Same here… Smith, Steven & Ceglar for a super budget forward line. Ceglar carries positional risk (if Big Boy gets back into the ruck) but as I’ve invested in G&G I like the cover if either goes down for a week or two.

    1. I’m concerned about Townsend. He had an ok score on the past weekend, but he won’t kick 3 goals every week… although with the bombers forward line, maybe he will 😀

  3. I said I have lynch, Steven, Smith and Brayshaw.
Normally I have a structure that I’m happy with by now. The rookie or lack of rookie is making this a tough year. Kind of good tho as hopefully this mixes up starting teams.
Sam Jacobs has made me experiment. Keep going back to G&G tho. These guys can and probably will just monster games

  4. A bit like last season, I reckon there will be a few mid pricers that could break out this time around too. And theyre going to have to with a lot of rookies under performing or not even getting a look at by the coach.

I know hes burnt us in the past, but im seriously liking what Petracca is up to this season. Especially with some news whispers floating around that hell be looking at a lot more midfield time this season

  5. If price wasnt a consideration what order would you have these 3 players? Greenwood, Macpherson and Brayshaw and why you believe this?

    Thanks

    1. Macpherson seems to be in the best form, while Brayshaw had an outstanding 1-off year. For me, I think Macpherson is more likely to have a breakout than Brayshaw recapture his for from 2 seasons ago, and I think Greenwood will continue to average what he did at the Crows.

    2. Macpherson, Brayshaw, Greenwood.

MacP has a serious premo ceiling and wasn’t far off it last year.

Brayshaw has gotten consistent growing scores.

Greenwood looks promising but has the biggest improvement to make so represents the highest risk of failing to meet expectations.

  6. I’m being optimistic, so none hopefully. But will splash out on the 200-250k players if needed for warm bodies. 30pts is better than a zero.

      1. Trying my hardest, but butler, bonar, hill, Townsend types are making it difficult. Especially without the rookies. But at leased I can downgrade them to rookies on the bubble without a second thought. They only need to reach 350ish once each through the season to upgrade or downgrade.

  7. Thanks for the write up!! So many mouth watering options that have potential to breakout… how many is too many :O

  8. Is it worth sacrificing a ‘premo’ down back such as houston, to be able to fit 2 mid prices in my fwd line? Or even 1 extra premo up fwd? Feedback appreciated

  9. Darcy Macpherson; Are people leaving him out because the suns dont score well generally in SC? Isn’t back to back 130’s in the Marsh Series enough…

    1. Could be a trap. Played GEE magoos and a woeful ADE side in MS. Super-talented and played most of last year with niggling injuries. Am expecting an upturn in 2020 and it could be significant, but you need to manage expectations.
      Could he be Top6? Maybe
      Top10? No doubt.
Good luck if you go with him. Just remember there are plenty who will likely make more. If you start him, you’re likely best served to play him as a keeper and ride those poor scores!

      1. I’ve definitely picked him as a keeper myself and expect him to push top 6 for overall points.. finished 9th overall last year for forwards

  10. Tossing up Bonar, or moving him up to Petracca at the cost to my backline alongside Steven and Dev.

    TU: J.Lloyd, Roberton, Bonar
    TD: Houston, Noble, Petracca

    1. I’m with you mate, I’ve currently got Rozee, but I’m still tossing it up.

It’s him or Devon Smith for me and I think I’m swaying towards Smith.

I think Rozee could average in the 80’s though, just worry about his consistency.

  11. I’ve currently got Brayshaw, Steven and Smith there. I’m thinking of going without one of Whitfield/Dusty. Probably Dusty at this stage

  12. I feel people have stopped looking for rookies all together. Everyone is just trying to fit as many mid pricers as possible even at the expense of premiums.
Rankin, King, turner, Cameron, xerri, budarick, georgiades, frampton even hill all have a chance of still playing round 1 in the fwds.
I just hope everyone hasn’t gotten into the mindset of I have to run mid prices just yet(at the expense of a premium and rookie).

    1. The end of the world is near. Repent now, get rid of your Grundy’s and Gawn’s. There are no rookies playing, take your midpricers now before it’s too late.

You and me TOF, 1st and 2nd!

    2. Being a chance to run in round 1 is far from a certainty to play an F5 or F6 position consistently from Rounds 1-6 like we normally require from on field players.

Risky rookies on bench, no dramas.

Risky rookie on field with a stable low scoring rookie on bench, no dramas.

Risky rookie on field backed up by an even riskier one and a donut? No thanks.

      1. Spot on HH. Gotta have back-up. Brander is now no certainty and Max KING will definitely be rested from time to time. I will take two rookies on my bench who have excellent JS (DEF as well) and if there are no more, will compromise Premos for value if I have to. Hopefully won’t have to, but I currently don’t see past Crocker and maybe Taylor/Rankine having decent JS and making enough cash?!
Other lines don’t look much better either at this point! More than three, or four at a stretch onfield, looks like trouble to me.
