Mottsy’s Final Pass

Written by Motts on March 18 2013

Here it is, the final cut of The 2013 Maulers:

2013 SC Team

I’m not going to go into reasons I’ve chosen each player nor the reasons I’ve omitted players.

Trust me when I say a lot of thought has gone into it and I’m pretty close to the point where I don’t want to think about it one more second.

Feel free to tear it apart, I promise not to cry.

Now bring on the start of the season!

  1. I like it Motts.. Strong rucks and mid field could potentially pay huge dividends.. I think Dangermouse is gonna have a huge season and ave 125+ good luck mate.
    1 question though, if Berger is named rnd 1, will you make changes to fit him in??

  6. I’m of the point of view that anyone that has had a look at the “RMT ’13” thread on here will have a scarily similar team to everyone else that has also at least looked.
    I’m just surprised not to see Robinson or Rowe there Motts…

  7. Nice looking team, Motts; I rate it highly; all your selections are either in my current team or were seriously contemplated options. Best of luck to you in the coming season.

  8. Ahhhhh Mottsy, I recall you decided to go through my team last season and tear it apart, now looking at the rabble you’ve listed above I’m not sure where to start….. Duff man, makes a great beer, but sorry, can’t play for sheite. Stevens couldn’t play when he was at WC, and he still can’t play now that he’s changed clubs (see Andreas Everitt), Karnezis!!! enough said about him. Witts….. you might have well picked his brother Dick. No Swan of Pendlebury. 535k on a second year rookie, must be dreamin!

    Anyway, good luck this season mate, you’re gona need it.

  9. Although you’re bound to pick it up on Thursday night, if not before Motts, Blicavs will rocket into about 70-80% of all teams now that he’s able to slot into that R4 position.

    Decided against the Ruck/Forward swing Sam Rowe provides? He’d be the ‘bums on seats’ selection surely!

    D3 is the hardest to pick for mine… a host of players putting their hands up! Had Birchall, Hanley, Duffield and Heppell all through there… Heath Shaw even worth a mention?

    Hard not to pick a Port rookie on every line isn’t it? You just know they’re all going to play but they’re not the most patient bunch at Alberton are they? Jarrad Redden anyone?

    Going with ‘4-6’ guns and rookies in the midfield is ballsy… went for the safety midpricer at M5 personally with Stevens at M6… do like what I’m hearing about Wines though. Enjoy the cash you generate however 😉

  10. Like it overall, few comments:

    – I think that you are missing out a bit in the back-line re Port rookies. As you have said, the rookie spots are still up-for-grabs, but I think that there will be 2-3 good Port options there;
    – Love the four back premiums. They are my four favourite backs, closely following by Newman;
    – It may be money related but I feel like Dangerfield or Murphy would look much better as Pendlebury;
    – Stevens over Lucas: money related or a Carlton fan who doesn’t think Lucas will kick on from NAB form?
    – Jacobs is one the intrigues me. I have seen him in a number of teams and I don’t see him becoming a top 2-3 ruckman this year. Just personal taste, but I suppose but I see him going past 5 of: Cox, Naitanui, Sandilands, Ryder, Roughead, Maric and McEvoy, which he would have to do to be a top 3 ruck in 2013;
    – I’m not sure Bartel over Chapman and Johnson as the Cats M/F’s is the way to go, but again, personal taste.

    I think that I’ll give it a cheeky 18/30, as that is how many players we share and every coach worth their salt has to believe that their team is the best going into the season!

  11. 1 forward 1 defender 1 midfielder different to my side. Gonna be a lot of very similar teams about this year it seems. No pie boys is a bold move Mottsy, hope it pays off for you.

  12. Mr Motts

    Is it possible that you are in a similar situation as myself this year?.. I note that you are a Carlton supporter (Sadly) and yet you have only the two “given” Blues players in your side. I am of the Brown and Gold persuasion and I too have only room for the one “given” (IMO). MY reasoning was that I do rate my players, individually, to be as good as the rest, however, their stats, due to game plan, dont stack up as good as some others. Sadly, last year, I found myself down on the likes of S.Mitchell for “only” scoring 100ish instead of 120+ that the likes of J.Watson got even though we had won the game and Essenscum had not.
    Therefore, I decided this year that I would avoid Cats Bums when my boys had won games by NOT selecting them in SC. Mayhap you agree?

    On your side, I agree with the majority who(m) tend to share a lot of similarities with you. The major POD I have is an aversion to going with three Lions in my forward line (cant suscribe to the hype JUST yet), I have Port Rookie defenders because they WILL see a lot of it this year and I have allowed the draw to “effect” my selections in some premium positions.

    Best of for the season all and am looking forward to another intersting and challenging SC year.

  14. Overall I like what I see, similar structure to what I am going with, the only difference is I have decided to lock in 5 premium mids and only 3 defensive premiums, there is plenty of depth I feel in the defensive rookies and I feel comfortable that having 3 take the field early days will not be an issue.

    I think upgrading is easier in defence as a premium generally tops out around the 500k mark where as a mid you are looking more at 550-600k so when the rookies reach their top you get more bang for buck and you can also really nut out who is scoring well in defence and who isn’t.

    Look forward to battling it out with you once again.

  15. Nice Motts, i like the fact you have none of the port rookies as its a bit diferent than the norm, strong midfield, strong rucks, and great fwd line. Really well balanced team. Im a bit stuck on my rucks atm

  16. Starting to have doubts about Ablett. Interviews with him and Guy McKenna indicate he’ll be playing a less contested game, with more time forward and less time on the ground, with a view to extending his career by a couple of years.

    Could it be worth holding off on him initially? His value could drop quite drastically if he starts scoring 100-115 each week rather than 125+. Could even be a strong case for picking up Harley Bennell or David Swallow if they’ll be shouldering more of the workload.

  17. “Waiting For A Team Like You”
    to the Foreigner tune…

    I’ve been waiting for a team like you
    To come into my life
    I’ve been waiting for a team like you
    A team that will survive
    I’ve been waiting for something new
    To make me feel alive
    Yeah, waiting for a team like you
    To come into my life

    You’re so good
    When we choose rookies, its understood
    It’s more than a touch or a word we say
    Only in dreams could it be this way
    When you choose your team
    Yeah, really gotta scream!

    Now, I know it’s right
    From the moment I wake up till deep in the night
    There’s no where on earth that I’d rather be
    Than locking this team in, tenderly

    I’ve been waiting for a team like you
    To come into my life
    I’ve been waiting for a team like you
    A team that will survive
    I’ve been waiting to copy you
    To make me feel alive
    Yeah, waiting for a team like you
    To come into my life.

  19. Only thing I don’t like is your use of dpp.

    All your back/mid are in back. All your fwd/mid are in fwd. As such until you start cash cowing you effectively have no dpp flexibility.

  20. Looks like a pretty good team, very similar rookies to mine. Although i think Pendlebury/swan/beams are to good to overlook in the midfield at least one of them anyway just a suggestion.
