Mottsy’s First Pass

Written by Motts on December 19 2012

Had a crack at a team this afternoon. Know very little about the rookies at this stage so not looking for feedback on it – most players will change before the start of the season. Just giving those without SC Gold access some info on prices. Here it is:

  1. Yea. Nice Motts.

I think O’Meara and Viney are a lock for me next year, as well as Mitchell (Swans)

Wish 2013 would roll around already 🙂

  2. Motts, after hunting for value, with my normal DPP eye & 1,568,300 still in the bank to improve, this is my Day 1 initial team for general comments:-
    DEF / MIDS DPP-Goddard (541K), N.Viastuin (159K), S.Colquhoun (109K), C.Richardson (115,900)
    DEF/FOR DPP-G.Broughton (441K)
    DEF only – S.Docharty (115K), C.Heath (115K), J.Webster (115K)

    MID / DEF DPP- Gibbs (509K), Hartlett (489K), B.Goodes (128K)
    MID / FOR DPP- B.Kennedy (109K)
    MID – Pendles (667K), Cotchin (622K), Morabito (115K), J.O’Meara (115K), T.Mitchell (115K), J.Viney (109K),

    Ruck/For DPP- Nic Nat (611K, D.Cox (600K), S.Rowe (115K),
R – Leunberger (301K) (Gawn also on radar & cheap F/R in forwards)

    For/Ruck DPP- J.Roughead (554K)
    For/Mid DPP- D.Martin (473K), T.Varcoe (268K), T.Menzel (149K)
    For/Def DPP- N.Bock (297K), B.Staker (128K), T.Curran (115K)
    For – T.Lee (115K)

Hope some of the names help non SC Gold people with initial ideas, however very long way to go until Round 1’s locked in team!

  3. Firstly, lots of good names in there.

Interesting to see the R/F link you’ve gone with is a Star and a Rookie. With the restructuring of the MBR’s I’m thinking of doing something along these lines:

    RUCKS: Naitanui (R/F) – Leuenberger – Cheapest R/F – Second Cheapest R/F

And then have say a Cox in the forward-line as my coverage. Essentially gives me three star rucks and saves me money. This is obviously assuming that their are two cheap DPP’s who fit the bill (I’m surprised that Joe Daniher didn’t get that status by the way), but just an early thought.

I know that you weren’t after rookie feedback, but looking at your midfield made me think. Do people who would know (most likely Adelaide fans) think that Crouch is a decent chance of a run this season. If he and Mitchell can crack into their very good sides, I’m guessing those two with Viney and O’Meara will be the rookie backbone of many sides.

  4. Looking solid Motts. Plenty of flexibility and mostly GnR with a couple of worthy midprice punts. We’ll obviously learn a bit more about the rookies down the track but I reckon you could afford to cull a couple of the higher priced rooks to give some handy extra cash at the top end.

Not sure about Silvagni though. Only saw him play one game late last year (can’t remember who against) but he was like a sulking under 14 who was forced to play in the in the 16s and comes close to tears because he can’t keep up with the big kids.

    Had a quick crack myself:

    DEFENDERS
    Goddard, B. (D/M) Birchall, G. Heppell, D. (D/M) Broughton, G. (D/F) Yarran, C. Staker, B. (D/F)
    Docherty, S. Colquhoun, S. (D/M)

    MIDS
    Pendlebury, S. Dangerfield, P. Cotchin, T. Fyfe, N. Moloney, B. Ball, L. O’Meara, J. Viney, J.
    Goodes, B. (M/D) Kerridge, S. (M/F)

    RUCKS
    Naitanui, N. (R/F) Leuenberger, M.
    Witts, J. Daw, M.

    FORWARDS
    Roughead, J. (F/R) Rockliff, T. (F/M) Martin, D. (F/M) Gray, R. (F/M) Bock, N. (F/D) Knights, C.
    Macaffer, B. Dick, B.

  5. Yew! Back for another year lads. First thing I noticed when havin a little play is the severe lack of fwd rookies this year, granted I haven’t looked into it too much but none really jumped out.

Meanwhile there’s plenty of value in the mid rookies this year it seems.

Had a little play and came up with this

Goddard d/m, Waters, Birchall, Grimes, Gibbs d/m, Pittard, Docherty, Terlich

Gaz, Pendles, Cotchin, Whitfield, O’Meara, Viney, Mitchell, Crouch, Colquohon d/m, Kennedy m/f

    Goldy, Leuenberger, Witts, Gawn

    Franklin Rockliff f/m, Stevie J f/m, Daisy f/m, Dusty f/m, Varcoe f/m, Lee, Membrey.

Stacked forward as I don’t like many of the rookies at this point. Plenty of rookies to have a crack in the mids however.

  6. Likes:
Heppell — Reckon he’ll avg 90-100 next year and will be a great POD.
R Sloane — Can go big now and again like this year but I reckon he could be the Beams of ’12.
    Dislikes:
    N Lower — Doggies are S#!T, nuff said 😉
D Zorko — At that price tag I think you can find a better option i.e Sizzle, Dusty or Diasy.

Overall you’ve got some nice unique picks and I think it’s not a bad try for December 😉 , Motts.

  7. T/U: Judd and Ball.
    T/D: Ablett and varcoe
I think ablett wont match his 2012 average and this year I think he will have an average of 125+
I think judd will be back to his 115+ average from 2 years ago and be at his best, so with an average difference of around 10- 20 and a price difference between them of about 190k who would you choose?

  9. Nice start Motts. I had a peek at some of the SC bargians this year, in particular: Bock, Staker, Ball, Gray, Leuy, Vardy, Knights and McCaffer. If these guys have a good preseason they are all looking strong for my lineup.

  10. So, my free SC Gold membership is still ticking over…that’s a plus!

Based on current positions and prices this is what I’m thinking. Only leaves me with about 6k in the tank, but I’ve got plenty of top shelf rookies that will probably get downgraded to promising cheapies during the pre-season.

    DEF: B. Goddard, B. Gibbs, G. Birchall, D. Heppell, B. Staker, K. Aylett, S. Docherty, S. Colquhoun

    MID: D. Beams, T. Cotchin, M. Murphy, R. Sloane, L. Whitfield, N. Vlastuin, T. Mitchell, S. Kerridge, J. O’Meara, J. Viney

    RUCK: N. Naitanui, M. Bailey, S. Rowe, J. Witts

    FWD: L. Franklin, P. Ryder, D. Zorko, J. Lewis, G. Broughton, T. Menzel, K. Jaksch, J. Daniher

Will definitely be keeping my eye on Robbie Gray during the preseason, and I’m really strongly considering Drew Petrie, though deep down I feel like I shouldn’t be. I had Rockliff in the forward line for about 5 seconds before I slapped myself upside the head for forgetting how he mistreated me last season. I figure $520k is a touch pricey for a player who finished last season around $370k.

Also unsure as to go the Sloane/Murphy combo or Dangerfield/Judd. Any thoughts?

  12. its going to be a challenge this year. seems alot of sides will have their fair share of same players…

Bock, B Goodes, Staker, Ball Omeara, viney, leuenberger, LeCras, Gray, Varcoe, J Daniher will all be mid to cheap options for alot of teams.

Throw in locks such as Shaw, Waters, Gibbs, Pendles, GAJ, Murphy, Watson, Franklin……..

May not be much POD’s as we have seen other years.

  18. I can see the possibility of NO ROOKIES starting rnd 1 and if they do will be vest candidates.Even the likes of cheapies like pittard, staker, and k stevens missing out. This will cause havoc for us all, especially the GnR coaches. The main trap here is rnd1 rolling lockout.WHO is going to be caught with only enough money for non playing duds for after stacking their teams with prems in the early games

  20. Liking your team thus far Motts, but, I am not going ANYWHERE NEAR team construction yet because it leads me to that bad, bad place where I eat, drink, piss and sleep team selection quandries, and to that awful, awful place where I do ridiculous stuff like waking up in the middle of the night to trade Broughton out of my side, cos I dreamt that Lyon has become the new Suns coach, and then agonise over the perfect replacement in the price range until the missus’ drags me back into bed kicking and screaming because I just realised that if I trade out x, y, & z, I can afford to bring in d, k & p and if I can make the quick trade…..
So, the upshot is that I’m not going near that place til February, or whatever day in January it is that I fool myself into thinking that I can select one little team casually and then leave it alone to marinade for a while without my interference….

  26. Anyone remember the SC Excel spreadsheet that was floating around last year?

I found it really useful being able to highlight and look at all of my options at once as well as saving multiple versions of my team. I can’t remember where it came from last year and haven’t been able to find a 2013 version.

  30. OK Revised team. Still really struggling with forward rookies though.

Goddard, Gibbs, Grimes, Broughton, Pedersen, Vlatsuin, Pittard, Terlich

Gaz, Selwood, Cotchin, Shuey, Mundy, K. Mitchell, O’Meara, Viney, Goodes, B.Kennedy

    Ryder, Leuenberger, Grundy, S. Rowe

Cox, Rockliff, Wright, Christensen, Varcoe, Staker, Lee, Membrey.

Pedersen, Luey, Varcoe only the only “True” midpricers. Plenty of upside in all 3 i think, Pedersen especially.

Shuey, Wright and Christensen the big gambles.I personally think Wright and Shuey will be in for big years and if Bundy gets his body right he is SC gold.

  31. I haven’t got access to Supercoach Gold yet, but there’s this great tool at http://www.jockreynolds.com.au/2013/01/07/2013-supercoach-team-analysis-tool/ which you can use instead. This is my team (so far) for 2013.

    DEF:
Brendon Goddard (MID), Greg Broughton (FWD), Brian Lake, Dyson Heppell, Nathan Bock (FWD), Nick Vlastuin (MID), Brett Goodes (MID), Dean Terlich.

    MID:
Gary Ablett, Scott Pendlebury, Trent Cotchin, Chris Judd, Andrew Gaff, Brent Moloney, Kane Mitchell, Brad Crouch, Jaeger O’Meara, Jack Viney

    Rucks:
Matthew Leuenberger, Stefan Martin (FWD), Daniel Currie, Brodie Grundy

    Forwards:
Dean Cox (RUC), Dayne Zorko (MID), Mark Le Cras, Josh J Kennedy, Chris Knights, Joe Daniher, Sam Mayes (MID), Brent Staker (DEF).

    Total Team price: $9 862 900.

My plan is to hopefully have Knights, Le Cras, Kennedy or Martin increase in value so I can swap one of them for Nic Nat, whom I believe will drop in price as he returns to full fitness. I have midfield class but inflexibility. My forwards are home to the Mid-pricer brigade, will it be there that my team makes or breaks?

Brian Lake might benefit from his move to Hawthorn and return to his role as a rebounding defender. Greg Broughton, though he burned me last year, is in due to his DPP Role and the fact that he’s moved from Fremantle. Dayne Zorko is picked as a premium – will he suffer second year blues?

So, what do you guys think?

  42. I just think that port and melb should be looking years ahead and are not yet near a grand final . Given that, why would they throw the young stars against the hardened bodies of experienced professionals.Sure they would have to blood them sometime, but for me that should be later in the season after plenty of gym work and a total knowledge of the game plan. Top that off with the recruiting of experienced players over the last few years and i am puzzled why so many seem to think they will play rnd1..

  45. Anyone from Radelaide got any inside info or opinion on how Brodie Smith is looking for 2013? Bit of talk about midfield time (worse than “potential” this time of year!) and I don’t think the Crows midfield runs that deep. Dangermouse, Thompson & Sloane are all obviously well ahead of him but is there any chance he could overtake any of Van Berlo, Vince, Wright & Douglas?

  46. How’s the team looking Motts. On to Pass #2 yet? I think I just saved team #328. Just glad I didn’t waste my whole Summer NOT looking at Supercoach!

  47. If you get a chance, Motts, I’d be interested in seeing people’s early thoughts on the midfield – by way of a poll.

Specifically, how many of the 110+ average players people are trying to fit into their 2013 side (there were 17 of them last season). With the extra two midfielders on the park, it would be really interesting to see if people are thinking that they will allocate those spots to getting more of the out-and-out guns, more rookies or take a punt on mid-pricers.
