Happy New Year Supercoaches. These player reviews will run for a few weeks but I’ve only done enough for this week so please let me know who you want reviewed and I’ll try and post them. I’ve tried a bit of a different format for preseason this year so hopefully it works.
Supercoach Price: $573,500
Bye Round: 13
2016 Average: 105.4
2016 Games: 5
Past (2015-2011): 124, 122, 106, 94, 108
At age 25, Fyfe should be in peak form and an uber-gun like Dangerfield, but durability has long been an issue. In the last 3 years he has averaged less than 14 games and he has not played over 20 games since Fremantle’s Grand Final year of 2013. To be fair that figure is negatively affected by his 2016 season where he re-broke the leg that never properly healed from late 2015.
You might question this, but if Fyfe plays he generally scores well. After a slow start in Round 1 of 2016, he pumped out 157, 115 and 141 before injury ended his year midway through Round 5.
Even with injury, Fyfe has only dropped below 100 on 8 occasions in the past 3 seasons (including finals) and when he is fit he rarely drops below 80. If he’s fit, he scores.
Fyfe doesn’t pump out quite the monster scores of Dangerfield and Rockliff, but he scores over 140 in about 25% of his matches.
After 2013, most teams had no success tagging Fyfe so they started going head-to-head with him instead. The only truly successful tag was by White at Carlton in 2015 and even he only held Fyfe to 92 SC points.
Fyfe is priced at 105.4 but can easily average 120 plus so he’s cheap. The only question is why he didn’t receive a greater discount for playing less than 10 matches in 2016?
Only durability has prevented a 5 star review for Fyfe, but that lack of durability is what makes him so cheap!
Verdict: At that price, Fyfe must be considered. Make sure he has a full preseason and maybe go easy on selecting Dayne Beams in the same midfield!
