  1. There seems to be so much value down back every year; this year being no different. Because of this, I am going light on premos (just Siciliy and Docherty) and then looking for value (Hill, Doedee) and mature rookies (Starcevich, Williamson).

I’m worried by Lloyd’s finish to 2019, particularly the emergence of Dawson, so at his price I’m steering clear. Though I can easily see him burning me too.
Hurn and Houli are getting along in age which also scares me off a bit. And then there is a glut of blokes who could easily be anywhere from third-highest to 15th-highest defender (Stewart, Rampe, Newman, Rich, etc). I am keen on Ryan, but I just cant squeeze him in at the moment without getting rid of my 6th mid premo (which I won’t be doing).

Essentially, because it isn’t so clear who will be the top dogs (as opposed to say, the mid uber premos), I will play the waiting game and bring them in as the hierarchy emerges during the season.

    1. Agree. I have tossed up Lloyd, Williams and Doch, Lloyd and Doch, Williams and Doch, and some combo of Doedee/Roberton and some premo defenders.

If both Doedee and Roberton are fit they will both be 150k+ increases and more, possibly even keepers or at least luxury trades.

Lloyd has downside risk with Dawson. Williams if they decide to use Whitfield back for whatever reason. Who knows how Adelaide are gonna line up with Doedee back, and Sicily may have Sam Frost as a downside risk, but the biggest risk to Sicily is Sicily himself.

The “sure things” this year are mids and rucks.

Unlike the forwards, there are actually enough premo defenders to make a full team, which is at least something.

        1. Yeah, there is a bit of thinking that he can run off more, because Frost can be the one wearing the responsibility.

I don’t know that’s the way of it. I think there’s a bit more of the coaching ball and chain being applied not for a lockdown post but for the burden of responsibility to create a process of thinking before acting.

  2. Might come down to Laird v Williams

Laird very safe, always in the same consistent role year in year out

Williams may drop mid time, with J Kelly going well in the preseason, Cogs & Ward back I believe so the extra $$$ might make Catta’s mind up in defence

    1. Same here Catta. I have Laird at this stage but Williams is a great pick too. Would have both if $$ available.

Personally think Williams scores well whether he plays in the backline or in the midfield. Off half back his definitely a go to target to distribute out of the half back.

        1. Wow just looked at that and he averaged around 20 points higher in the 6 games Whitfield missed (118 average in these 6 games). Not sure if you would consider the sample size large enough but i didn’t realise it was that significant!

Definitely makes me more comfortable with not having him in my team to start with!

    2. I don’t think Williams increased his average because of increased midfield minutes. I watched all his games his scoring went up because of the kick in rule and his elite disposal and link up play from the backline. I don’t think a decreased percentage of mid time will chnage his scoring.

      1. That’s exactly my thinking Willy. If he plays MID, I’ll start him. Seeing players like Burton, Lienert or even Mayes playing HB or wing will cement my thinking even more. Think Port will be better with him in there longer-term too, to be honest.

  4. DBJ was in some amazing form late last year (except the 7), very keen to watch his pre season/Jlt progress
