Poll – The Uber Premium Mids

Written by Motts on January 29 2020

Yes, Lachie Whitfield is worth $604,100 but as a M/F DPP, if he’s in your team he should be sitting at F1.

Which of them are currently in your squad (up to 4 selections)?

  1. I currently have Macrae, Cripps, Dunkley and Danger, but all 4 could change before round 1.

The only players on the list I’m not considering are Titchell (coming back from LTI) and Jelly (missed 15 games over the last 2 years).

    1. Ditto. Nor Neale for me. Easily taggable and teams are increasingly realising it. His BH ave. 2019 is way down on his FH for that reason. That said he is VERY likely Top8, but I’m not willing to pay those big dollars for him.
OLIVER was my first MID pick and currently resides at M5.

      1. I’m not so sure about excluding Neale
Still averaged 118 after bye and Brisbane have some extra reinforcements in mid to support him in 2020

        1. I’m with you PBUZZ, Neale has been a scoring machine for a few years in a row now and he is still only 26. Also, I reckon Zorko is equally likely to get a tag if he maintains his form from the second half of last year. Add in the new big bodies brissie have brought in, as you mentioned, and I think he is as safe a pick as any other uber mid going around.

AS – if I didn’t start him it would only be because I would be banking that he drops a few 90s in a row early and can be grabbed 80k or so cheaper, but I think that is more unlikely than likely and you will probably still have to go two down one up to get him in. Like you say, he will definitely feature in the top mids by years end. Personally I’m starting him (and hoping those early 90s don’t eventuate!)

          1. I hear you both loud and clear. To be honest, I simply can’t afford him and have the five mentioned above in front of him (from a pts/$ perspective). I could still pick him ahead of Cripps, but I don’t think so at this stage.
We can’t start ‘em all sadly 🙁

            1. I’m with Allsaints, I’m not starting him either just because I have others slightly ahead and he has the Round 12 bye…..Rowell to Neale before Round 13 to complete my midfield looks very likely

  2. I notice Oliver is not on the list. Last year he had a double shoulder surgery, Melbourne as a whole was way down and he still managed to be top 7 mid on total points. This year he has 2 preseasons under his belt, He is going to take it up a notch. Cheap as well.

    1. I love the boy, but he does so much grunt work that a lot of his disposals are handballs, and his disposal lacks because of the hard ball gets. Reckon some more time fwd ala dusty and danger might be the answer, especially during centre bounces.

    2. There’s no way I’m starting Satan Oliver.

First two opponents West Coast and GWS.

Hutchings and De Boer. Bang, bang. 2 scores under 100, cya later.

Demons have a soft, largely tag-free run after the byes. I’ll probably grab him then.

      1. Depends upon your focus… If you play for league and think over the season Oliver is a keeper (yes on both counts for me) then getting 2 of his toughest match ups out of the way in round 1 & 2, both non-head2head / non-premiershipPoint scoring rounds is a significant win.

      1. Yea not too deep up front(2 premo, maybe 1 midpricer and the rest rooks),so cash cow availability might force a change, but down back I reckon there is enough value to have Docherty as D2 behind Sicily, then after that Doedee, Hill, etc.

With Gawn, Grundy, Jelly, Danger, Macrae, Neale, Cripps and Fyfe (and obviously Whitfield and Dusty) I’m hoping I can churn out some solid points at the front end of the season

        1. I’m much more willing to take risks on the FWD and BAC line than in the middle, where I think the uber premo picks are more obvious. Of course, hindsight might have other ideas…

          1. Totally with you on your structure. Am only going one/two Premos DEF and FWD at the moment which should allow GG.com & a 6th MID (it needs to, to have 12). Filling it up with best rookies, two loopholes and ‘underpricers’. Long way to go before I know who ANY of that last lot are, but am very happy with the structure at the mo 🙂

            1. For sure AS. At that stage of the PS where we just need to see games. For all of us addicts who’ve set up a team the week SC opens all we can do now is tinker and speculate for the next few weeks

            2. Similar. I’m banking Doch as a premo, and thus calling it 11, plus a few maybe premos due to injury recovery or form.

Can pull 12 with some cheaper rookies, but cannot commit to enough cheap rookies at this stage.

          2. Spot on, Barby. Am also loading up on the premo mids with similar Fwd/Def strategy re rooks & cheaper fallen / returning options. Fingers crossed!

        2. BBQBarbs Your side totally scares me. Yes You will get monsters scores to win your leagues but when was the last time Fyfe or Jelly played 22 games? Then Doch with double ACL surgery…And Sicily , only played 22 games for the first time last year and waiting to be suspended… Having said that if you pull it off , it is title winning. Too many question marks for premos to my liking.

          1. Gotta risk it for the biscuit Jeannot. Doch and Kelly have both had full preseasons, and sooner or later I reckon Kelly will absolutely smash it and win a brownlow – hopefully this year.

Granted Fyfe has been a bit injury prone too, but last year it was only the 1 game he missed if I’m not mistaken, and that was a concussion, not any lingering soft tissue injury, so againI’ll back him in.

If either do get injured then they will be able to be turned into almost any other mid. I never really pick based on “injury-proneness” anyway – its such a luck of the draw whether someone gets injured or not.

      2. Wow.

I’m running 5, and Grawndy. There’s some thinner spots elsewhere…

6 plus Grawndy. I can see how you could, but it would certainly be ballsy.

      1. Mainly fwd line Wighty. Ive got Dusty, Whitfield and then rookies, 1 of whom I can turn into a midpricer with what I have left in the bank. Rookie availability will decide if this is tenable

  3. Fyfe’s last year seemed to be an aberration, wondering what a new coach at Freo will do and whether he stay on the park. Might keep an on eye on the rookie’s though.

    1. Apparently Fyfe did have a shoulder reco in the offseason, so could conceivably start slow. Although so did Oliver last year and he played every game. I think if he plays a PS game or two you can trust he is ready to go, and when he is on the park he tears it up.
Admittedly he is somewhat injury prone, but with his scoring power you’ll want him at some stage – better to start him and cash in the points than trade him in only for him to have an injury (hopefully not though), and burn an extra trade in the process.

  4. Hey Original force
Over 5,000,000 spent on 8 players
Other lines must be quite weak or you are just having a lend of us with less then 5,000,000 for remaining 22 players

    1. I’m going for it. 8 deep +GG.com. Other lines are weak(but don’t need to be as strong as most people’s) Not sure what to do yet with def/fwd. Have a couple of plans, just needing more information on who’s cheap and likely to play a decent amount. Keeping tabs on Townsend, butler, Doedee types(not as keepers but stepping stones who hopefully ave around 70 till I can upgrade them).
Just want to do something different.
But if it works I’m calling it ULTIMATE G’N’R.

  5. Ok peoples,
    Thoughts on this one please,
Senior players eg. Fyfe and Murphy, stepping back playing second fiddle to their heir apparents, eg. Brayshaw and Walsh…
Should we take it seriously if/when it happens in Marsh?……Could be new premos pending???
Some of us didn’t when Oliver first stats’d out preseason.

    1. I doubt it’ll happen this year, but yes it’s something to monitor for sure.

The thing I’m more worried about this year is maybe them getting more time forward, Carlton’s forward coach came out today and said Murphy would be doing some rotations up forward so that firmly puts a line through him for me. Maybe under a new coach the same could be said for Fyfe.

      1. Fremantle’s midfield runs pretty shallow for inside full timers. After Fyfe it would be Mundy then pick the other two who will virtually be basically midfielders? Maybe one of Brayshaw or Blakely?

Caleb Serong will be given some time in the midfield during the year as his hands are excellent at stoppages.

  6. A few people started Danger in the Mid last year, then moved him forward as they became able to trade/upgrade other players. I’m wondering how this worked out, as I’m considering doing this with Whitfield.
