Poll: Trade or Hold & Must Haves

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 20 2022

A couple of one or the other propositions we can bang out. Suggestions courtesy of Maverick, Anonymous Jude, Chillo and Harry. Alright, here we go:

We’ll kick things off with a little trade or hold action. Starting with Matt Rowell, or “Fatt Rowell” as I’ve renamed him. Rowell kicked off the season with an enormous 157 against the Eagles: he bulldozed his way from contest to contest, went at an insane CP ratio and was in total sync with Miller and Witts. Since then, however, he’s scored 71, 103, 65 and 64, looked flat as f*ck, bombing as an on-field option and compromising any substantive growth having now only made a paltry $58.5k.

Should you trade or hold Matt ROWELL (GCS, 401.4k, MID, 92, 103 BE)?

Next up is Brodie Grundy. Having been one half of the set and forget ruck combo for years, Grundy started to show a lower floor and spells of poor effort that last year and half. It was chalked up to COVID hubs and he came into the season at 49% ownership (the highest of any ruck). He’s currently averaging 98.4, has lost 72.9k, only hit 120+ once and dipped to a 53 last week. Of note, his game against the Cats was looking like a 60 were it not for a massive late third and fourth.

Should you trade or hold Brodie GRUNDY (COLL, 554.2k, RUC, 98.4, 150 BE)?

Next up is the age old SC dilemma of a “must have”. This week the must haves up for debate aren’t premiums (i.e Bont after his hot start last season) but instead on two previously marginal rookies.

First up is big bad Braydon Preuss. The long anticipated and injury riddled mountain of a man got a gig as the #1 ruckman early for the Giants and genuinely looked fantastic: great body work, a strong contest presence, excellent HTA numbers and actually used as a target across the ground. That resulted in two tons at a 200k price tag and scope to comfortably hit 400k in cash gen. He, of course, went and got himself a suspension. Flynn was decent as cover however the Giants were much more competitive with Preuss in and he’s just simply better than Flynn and appears to be their first choice. We’ll do this first poll on the assumption that Preuss is back in and playing as solo ruck.

Is Braydon PREUSS (GWS, $204.7k, RUC, 105.5, -93 BE) a must have?

If he's sharing duties with Flynn is he still a must have?

Then we’ve got Malcolm Rosas. Little intel about him and hardly on a pre-season radar but has strung together a 74 and 73. Bagged 3 in his first game, which won’t happen every week, but his second game was solid: 15 touches, 9 contested and a team high 7 tackles. Promising that he could still do 70 with no goals and across both performances he played with intensity, went hard and clearly relished his spot in the 22.

Is Malcolm ROSAS (GCS, 130.6k, FWD, 73.5, -71 BE) a must have?

  1. Per Abs’ update in the Coaches Box:

GWS: “Braydon Preuss, will come back in. Disappointing we lost him last week.” – Leon Cameron

Think he and Rosas are absolute must haves. Cash gen so thin right now, especially with many of us likely to sack JHF this week. Preuss as solo ruck gets to 400k like THAT *snaps fingers* and Rosas is the best/only rookie coming through rn. Having read Alza’s reserves piece, it could be a few weeks before we get another solid one.

    1. I agree with you now is the time to move. We should get Hayes and Hobbs next week. But beyond that it looks thin, maybe Hollands will come through at the right time. Usually we do get the unexpected bob up so fingers crossed that continues, job security through the byes is always important.

      1. Clark a chance to debut for West Coast this week.

Hollands has been playing well and may get a chance soon too.

I actually think there maybe a few rookies coming through soon.

        Here’s hoping !

        1. I’d love for Clark to come in but from what I read he didn’t play the full game on the weekend and don’t think eagles will rush him into the side without a full game of reserves footy into him. Looks like he could be a sniff 2-3 weeks from now.

  2. i think preuss is a must have but also sam hayes if he gets 80 this week. only have space for one though, who do u think would make more money until byes?
    TU preuss
    TD s.hayes

    1. Lots of love for preuss. Personally I’m waiting for Hayes as he is much cheaper and will ruck solo til at least the port bye. Preuss likely to play with flynn this week and who knows what will happen.

      1. Difference is Preuss is a 100 point player and Hayes isn’t.

Both are probably likely to earn similar coin, but when Preuss is playing (as he seems to get suspended for the smallest of infringements) he’s likely on any given week to be as good a scoring ruck as any other – ROB, Witts, English, Grundy etc.

Neither is a bad move, but if you have the extra ruck depth from our mass of dpp ruck options Preuss seems a better risk than he was at the start of the year.

  3. Trading Grundy & Preuss is not as straight forward as it seems.
If you have[as I do] English, Xerri, Hayes & Dixon then Preuss is not a must have
especially if Flynn plays and we also have Hayes[PP] & possibly Lynch[HA] as downgrade options in the coming wks. Cash generation looks ok.
I plan to trade Grundy to fix my Rowell/Ridley problem.
I have only used 2 trades so if I have to trade Grundy back latter , so be it.

    1. Don’t think lynch is a great buy for sc. has an elevated starting price of 200k and a score of 11 in his first game albeit injury affected I don’t think he will make much cash and no guarantee he starts with reeves injury being better than expected. He might play as second fiddle ruck with reeves back but not a great sc role regardless. Would steer clear.

  4. Preuss has been suspend twice and its only round 6, hopefully he will be a little more reliable if you trade him in.

  5. So Leon Cameron said “Braydon Preuss, will come back in. Disappointing we lost him last week”.

Keeping the wonderful SC community in mind, is there any chance that Cameron could have actually said the following:

“Braydon Preuss, will come back in, and Flynn will come out of the team. Disappointing we lost Preuss last week”. 🙂 🙂

Now that would have really helped my trade planning for this week!!!

  7. Hi guys, need opinions please!
Have done the following trades this week:

    Horne-Francis > Rosas (via DPP)
    Rowell > Brayshaw
    Baldwin > Preuss (via DPP)

    Leaves me with 30 trades.

T/U – Go for it, good trades!
    T/D – Nope!

  8. I’m going Witts to Preuss and banking almost $300k. Grundy will be back…it was Gawn getting the stick a few weeks back. Gibcus out, Daicos back, allows any premo mid I don’t have, and gain almost $200k from Preuss over three weeks…if he’s not suspended.
Grundy gone 150 in three of past five games v dons.

  9. You always have to take into consideration the marginal positional difference.

Trading Grundy to Preuss isn’t really giving up many points but also banking $300k.

Using that $$ to possibly make two rookie upgrades to fallen DEF/FWD premos is a benefit of +70, whereas upgrading Rowell and Bowey to premos will only gain +50.

Bowey’s BE will fall after R6 as the 47 will drop out of his cycle and Rowell is still capable of a 100+ score.

    1. I am going to Grundy to Preuss and then rowell to english via cogs. I will be targeting Darcy as my R2 I can’t see Grundy being top 3 ruck anymore

    1. Touk Miller (could go this week or next)

      Piggy Oliver (next week)

      Ben Keays as a POD.

Christian Petracca is a decent shout at his price.

Tom Mitchell same story as Petracca ^

Bont hasn’t dipped below 100, causes issues if you have a fair few Bulldogs players though.

Rory Laird & Callum Mills is a great shout too.

          1. I like him too.

Took an extra year than Walsh but has similar pedigree and his running power and time on ground is out of this world.

The Dogs have an absolute dream run coming up and I see Baz continuing to go big. If can clean up his disposal a bit I see a huge game coming soon too !

        1. Oh you don’t have Neale?

He’s who I’d be looking at getting. He’s over any complaints, is back to being a C option weekly (and nearly everyone owns him).

Tom Green is a great choice too, dunno how I forgot him from that list ^ – bit wary of Greene’s return and how that effects the midfield time for everyone. However, he’s been in amazing form and shows no signs of this season being a flash in the pan.

    1. This is berserk.

Couldn’t disagree with results more. JFH out way before Rowell.

JFH was bought as a rookie and has less than $50k of growth less if he averages 75. Rowell was selected to average 90+ and he’s still doing that.
