Poll – Zerrett

Written by Schwarzwalder on January 6 2017

In just his third year at AFL level, Zach Merrett ended the 2016 season as the 8th highest SC pts scorer overall………remarkable achievement!

Having played all 22 games, Merrett averaged 111.5 in a season where he only went under 25 disposals on four occasions.  He didn’t hit the SC century in seven games yet five of those were still 85+.  Some of his best pts-gathering-attributes can be marked down to his tackling (6.2 per game), Disposal Efficiency (72.3%) & a fairly low avg of clangers (2.8 per game).

With the extraordinary circumstances at Windy Hill, Merrett became one of the main focal points in the midfield during 2016.  He finished 11th in total disposals, running just a tick under 30 touches per game!   That may take a hit in 2017 when the ‘suspended’ Bombers return to the field.  He also loses his dual position status in Supercoach this season which may increase his value as a Point Of Difference.  But keep in mind that he is still only 21 years old and there is still plenty of natural improvement to come.

So where do you rate Zach Merrett?  Can you justify starting him at a cost of $606 400?  For more info on Zerrett, check out my First Glance write up from mid-December:  DPP Changes Part ONE.  Give us your thoughts in the comments below……….

  1. I think he has great potential in 2017, however, the coach has floated the idea of rotating the Merrett brothers this year. Jackson is training with the defenders to make a switch to defence to try his hand at senior selection and trying to keep a spot, while his younger best-and-fairest brother may be rotated more through the forward line when he’s not playing in the middle. David Myers currency will grow quick, people should be on him from the get-go.
