Popular Picks – January 2020

Written by Chillo on January 27 2020

Supercoach has now been open for almost a week. What has the wisdom of the masses decided that our teams should look like this year? Here is a team made up of the 30 most popular players at the time of print. Note that due to the salary cap, Lachie Neale (the 28th most popular player at 25% ownership) had to be omitted in favour of Aiden Bonar (21% ownership).

As one would expect at this time of year, midpricers and discounted players rule the roost. The likes of Docherty, Doedee, Roberton, Steven and Devon Smith are all extremely popular with their budget price tags. As more information comes to hand regarding rookie availability, it is likely a lot of these players will see their ownership numbers fall. Other observations:

  • There’s no mucking about in the ruck department, with Grundy (66% ownership) and Gawn (42%) streeting the field. The next most popular “premium” ruck is Rowan Marshall at just 7%. NicNat and Sauce Jacobs have their share of admirers at their lower price points, with each hovering around 12% ownership.
  • Similarly, Lachie Whitfield (62%) and Dusty Martin (59%) are running hot in the forward line, with Heeney the next most popular premium forward at 17% ownership.
  • Grand final hero Marlion Pickett is the most selected player at 67%. He only needs to be selected for round 1, and you would imagine that number will soar towards complete ownership.

Notable points of difference on each line include: Newman, Rampe, Rich, Zorko, Boak, Parker, JPK, Lycett and Gary Ablett. All are premium priced players at less than 2% ownership.

  1. The high pick rate of mid-pricers concerns me.

I don’t want to start too many of them myself, but I feel if I don’t I’ll be at a disadvantage by fielding rookies instead of mid-pricers at spots like D4/F4. Eg. those who started Libba last year were off to the races.

Is there a cap to the amount of mid-pricer madness?

    1. I hear you GB however can be hit and miss with mid pricers.
I started with Libba in 2o18 and he succumbed to a knee injury .
Devon Smith could be last years Libba however with historic injuries and uncertainties about his role picking up a rookie instead could mean upgrading on another line.
I am selecting J Stevens however with mental health it is an ongoing challenge and he could take more time away in future . Let’s hope change of environment will be great for his well being .
The point I am trying to make is there can be great value in mid priced picks but they are mid pricers for a reason and availability of rookies prior to round 1 will play a role

      1. I get that, PBuzz. Issue is teams that start 2 more mid-pricers over teams like mine are getting a 40~ point advantage , where I’ve got 2 rookies in those spots.

Just not sold on the some of popular mid-pricers yet. Dev Smith was still scoring poorly before his injury last year, the rotations and experimentation in Geelong’s midfield complicates things for Stevens, Martin has been training up FWD rather than in the MID at Carlton lately and Docherty’s always going to have the specter of two ACLs over him, not to mention the game and Carlton’s backline has changed considerably since he last played.

I am liking Doedee, Roberton and Hill though, pending fitness.

    2. 2, no more than 3 for, me, pending rookies – as always – rookies determine your structure, not the other way!!

The trick is in getting the right middies – as in a large part of this game, luck plays a big factor!!

  2. A great starting block for all the newbys.
Their initiation could be “so what do l need to do to get in Neale?”

  3. Hi Guys,
Slightly off topic, but is anyone else having problems with re-creating their leagues from previous years. The button’s up but then disappears once you select the league.

    1. Have you tried a different browser?

I have a Mac and supercoach likes firefox way better than safari. (Well did last year)
