Pre Season Rookie Review – Midfield

Written by Big Sexy on March 19 2013

Top 5 Midfielders – In no particular order

J Viney (Melb) $109k:  He was Pick 26 in the 2012 National Draft and was taken under the father son rule.  He played a solid season in the VFL last season and some would say unlucky not to debut last season.  If he ends up being half as good as he’s old man, he’ll be pretty handy.

J O’Meara (GC) $115k:  Was pick by GC in the 2011 mini-draft where it traded with GWS to get one of the 4 picks for underage players that it wasn’t allowed to use themselves (very complicated).…. Anyway, GC got their man, and word is, he’s a gun.  He’s a 182cm midfielder who’s touted as one of the ‘next big things’.

B Crouch (Adel) $115k:  Adel picked up Crouch in the same way GC got O’Meara, and he’s looking the goods.  He’s a 184cm midfielder and also thought to be one of the best youngsters coming through this season.

K Mitchell (PA) 126k:  Mitchell was taken by Port using Pick 5 in the 2013 Rookie Draft and comes from Claremont in the WAFL.  He is 174cm midfielder who’s a good age to come into AFL level at 22yo.

O Wines (PA) $169k:  Taken at Pick 7 in the 2012 National Draft, previously playing for Bendigo Pioneers.  Wines is a 185cm strongly built midfielder who starred for Vic Country in the U18 Championships.

Tell me who should be added or taken off the list in the comments.

  1. Seeing as he is put up as a midfielder/ruck I’ll put this here. I’d be interested to hear some thoughts on Blicavs, especially from some Catters out there.

So he has the number one ruck spot for RD1 and could quite easily knock out 80+. What happens when the rest of the Cats ruck brigade come back in though. Is he going to get the 6-8 games needed to fatten up for slaughter?

  2. With the upgraded rookies announced today, and Collingwood opting to upgrade Jack Frost and Ben Hudson, can anybody tell me if that means Sam Dwyer who remains a rookie, is able to play senior footy?
