Punters Club – Pumba

Written by Motts on February 21 2020

Morning all, and good to be aboard!
I’ve been a long time lurker on the page, so its nice to (hopefully) contribute back. I usually enjoy having a punt on the AFL, Premier League and NFL, but given that only one of these is currently available I’ve had to have a gander elsewhere…

To kick this round off, I’ve gone a few of the home favourites in the NBA playoffs:

  • Wizards at home to the Cavaliers
  • Celtics away at Timberwolves
  • Raptors hosting the Suns
  • Jazz at home for Spurs
  • LA Lakers to beat the Grizzlies
$50 on this 5 leg multi @ $3.90
Into the soccer now…
Juventus have been absolutely flying and a great multi booster this season, although I’m a tad hesitant on them this week. The ladder leaders are paying $1.33 away to cellar-dwellers SPAL, but they will have half an eye on their Champions League first leg final at Lyon mid next week. Good value nonetheless and I’ll back them here.
Wolves $1.45 are hosting a poor Norwich who, while impressing in their loss to Liverpool last week, sit on the bottom of the ladder for a reason.
Man Utd ($1.57) host Watford this weekend, after walking away with an invaluable win at Chelsea last weekend. Hopefully former Watford striker Odion Ighalo gets his first start for United (anytime goalscorer paying $2.00 by the way), and they get the job done. Hard to say which United show up though, as they love to lift for the tough encounters and flop in the winnable games…

And my team, Liverpool, have West Ham coming to Anfield but a win at home is only paying $1.14. I’ll back our defence though, with a win to nil paying $1.91, having kept cleansheets in 10 out of the last 11 games (way to jynx myself!)

I did like Tottenham ($4.50) away to Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho no doubt intending to take some points from Stamford Bridge where he is revered. The double chance (win/draw) is paying about $2.00, but with their Harry Kane replacement Son Heung-Min breaking his arm, Spurs are very light on in the attacking department. Tempted nonetheless, but will steer clear in this multi…

Which makes our second bet the following:

  • Juventus
  • Man Utd
  • Wolves
  • Liverpool to win to nil
$50 @ $5.78
Good luck to us all!

  1. Ps. I love your thought out reasoning. I usually don’t do it but I enjoyed reading that. I think I’ll start doing the same given how much I try to study my choices too!

  2. Good luck Pumba. Hope you smash it.

Watford are my only concern. Have a point more than Utd from their last ten and are on the march out of relegation. Utd had a tough game last night. Let’s hope I’m writing. I usually am 😉

      1. It was the one I was most concerned about too, but it destroys the value of the multi by removing it…

PS Sorry for the formatting of the above? It didn’t look like a dog’s breakfast in the email! Perhaps I needed to add spaces between the paragraphs?

        1. It’s not your fault mate – it’s stupid WordPress (the language the site is written in). I’ve done what I can to fix it.

  3. After going a month without conceding a Premier League goal, Liverpool concede TWO against the Hammers to send Pumba packing penniless in his first at-bat for the club. Bad luck pal.

    Up this week is Haysie.

    1. “having kept cleansheets in 10 out of the last 11 games (way to jynx myself!)” – at least I got that right!

The stats the Hammers almost overturned when up 1-0 and again 2-1 were insane:

      – Their manager, David Moyes, has never won at Anfield in his 15 games there (now 16), having been in charge of West Ham, Man Utd and Everton.
      – West Ham had only won 3/57 Premier League away games at Liverpool
      – West Ham had lost 3 of their past 4 Premier League games, and their last 4 away games.

And while Liverpool conceded (twice?!?) and cost us the multi, they’ve equaled the top-flight record of 21 home league wins in a row (held by Bill Shankly’s Liverpool side of 1972). To split the two, Shankly’s side scored 59 goals and conceded 14 in that time; whereas Klopp’s have scored 61 and conceded 14.

      Interesting, yes. Comforting? Nope.
