Rare Gems – Rd16

Written by Schwarzwalder on July 6 2018

Ever get the feeling that there are certain players performing well just for you? Nothing wrong with owning a POD or two but these guys are owned by just 3% of all teams (at the very most). The following players aren’t necessarily recommended, but could prove handy ‘left-field’ options over the last eight weeks……..

DEFENDERS

Jayden Short (RIC) $453k

Has been the direct beneficiary of Bachar Houli’s groin injury. You’d barely know that Houli has been out since Short has been steaming off half-back. Still no signs of Houli coming back just yet and Short is in just 1.1% of teams. Talented player with an accurate right foot, Short has averaged 101 over the last five weeks.

MIDFIELD

Callan Ward (GWS) $547k

Consistently underrated player when it comes to Supercoach. Fell just short of elite status at his best and has been producing good scores again of late. Nine tons from 14 games in 2018 including four from his last five. Going at 118 average over the last month and is owned by just 1.6% of all Coaches. Due for another big finish in 2018.

RUCK

Patrick Ryder (PTA) $512k

If there is anyone that can match it with Gawn or Grundy then it might just be Patty Ryder. He came home with a 116avg over the last nine games of 2017. If you think Grundy might taper off in form, then Ryder might be worth a chance (at a more affordable price). Currently in just 2.3% and has scored 125, 99 & 101 over the last three weeks.

FORWARDS

Luke Breust (HAW) $478k

Gunston has been getting plenty of attention from Supercoaches but Brooooooooooossst has been flying over the last month. The 27 year old has been impressive with 124, 131 & 109 from his last three outings. With a 93 average for the season, Breust could be a handy F6/F7 over the last eight weeks. Currently in just 2.8% of teams.

Do you already have some of these Rare Gems?  Considering any?

  1. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I really should have gone Breust over Gunston. Breust has been fantastic for my draft team all season, and Gunners has been an absolute disaster since I brought him in two weeks ago.
The rare gem I’m looking at this week is Dayne Beams (3% ownership). Cheap cheap cheap and has only played one poor game in his past six.

    1. It is indeed Chillo. Should likely have gone Lloyd over TMac five weeks ago, but felt like the right move at the time. Ho hum.
How’s Beams’ body holding up? That’s the only question mark for me. Gun.

    2. Definitely ran the numbers on Beams during the week, Chillo

Has averaged 102.77 at the Gabba ( 4 more in 2018 ) taking out his terrible day v Essendon but 114.25 over his last 9 games, averaged 27.6 touches over his last 9 games including 10 contested possessions, 5.1 clearances & 3.8 inside 50’s

Great value, if I only had an extra few trades I’d be all over him Chillo as a M9….but I’d need 2 trades to get him & I’m not prepared to do that at this point of the season!

Good luck, hope he kicks a$$ for you!

  2. I haven’t got any rare gems in my team but Goldy (5%) and Hurn (7%) are both doing pretty well ad PODs.
