Rare Gems – Rd19

Written by Schwarzwalder on July 27 2017

A different look at the Rare Gems this week………..I’ll be looking at players that could provide handy loophole coverage for the last five weeks of the season.  Whether it be at D7, M9 or F7, there is something for everyone here.  Consider it a mix of ‘Movers & Shakers’ with a touch of Rare Gems about it.  If you have a trade or two up your sleeve, an extra loophole option could see you over the line in those upcoming Finals matches……..

Shannon Hurn (WCE) – Up until a year or two ago, Hurn was considered a sneaky option as Top10 DEF but never quite reached those lofty heights.  Hurn uses the ball beautifully but never really accumulated enough possessions to trouble the folk at Champion Data.  His last two weeks have been phenomenal  with 34 touches at 91% Disposal Efficiency (Freo) & 28 touches at 89%DE (Coll) for scores of 165 & 149.  With an ownership rate of 1.3%, you could do a lot worse than have Hurn as your D6/D7 loophole option (especially with that sort of ceiling!)………..

Brad Ebert (PTA) – I canned him a few weeks ago on ‘Movers&Shakers’, but Brad Ebert is enjoying one of his best SC seasons, averaging 106 from all 17 games and sitting 15th on the Overall Scorer List.  Two weeks ago Ebert produced one of his best games of the season with 30 touches against North (76%DE), 19 of which were contested + 14 (!!) clearances.  Ebert is currently at an affordable price of $514k and owned by 4.9% of Coaches.  With a fairly decent run home, Ebert could well produce a couple of monster scores at M8/M9 for your team……….

Ben Brown (NTH) – Brown has kicked 47 goals for the season and is only three behind Buddy Franklin in the race for the Coleman Medal.  ‘Sideshow Ben’ kicked six against the Bombers on Saturday for a score of 134 pts.  North has a fairly good draw over the last five weeks and there’s not a lot of fire-power up FWD this season.  Brown might have another couple of big scores in him before the season is out.  At just $411k and owned by 1% of teams, Big Ben could prove the difference in Finals at F6/F7……..

Are any of these Rare Gems in your side?  Have you considered any as a big point of difference?  Who are you bringing in as a loophole option?

  1. Considering Hurn as a POD but that 24 only a couple of weeks ago is scaring me. Was it an injury or did he just do nothing?

    1. Injured (chest), still played on for 82% TOG but was clearly hampered and then missed Rd15. Scored 63 in Rd16 from 83% TOG before his 165 and 149 the last fortnight.
