  1. Jowi;s lads!

DEF: Hurley, Laird, Hibbard, Simpson, O’shea, Doedee
    Cumming, Keeffe

MID: Martin, Titch, Merrett, Fyfe, Rockliff, Dow, LDU, T.Kelly
    Freeman, Worpel, Barry

    RUC: Jacobs, Gawn
    Olango

FWD: Heeny, Billings, Smith, Christiansen, Rioli, Venables
    Ahern, Garlett

I have put 4 prems in the backline as i think that there wont be a ton of rookies that play there, on the flipside in the midfield there are a ton!

Obviously a lot of the rookies will most likely change depending on R1 selection. I really liked the look of kelly last night in the AFLX, hopefully he gets a run! If Billings doesnt heal up too good i will look elsewhere for a premium forward.

Rockliff, Smith and Christiansen are a little risky but i can see them paying off well! Im still a little skeptical of Smith so we will see with that one, i have about $16000 in the bank so with a downgrade of a someone like christiansen i could squeeze another premium in the forward line taking over Smith. I just dont see a lot of “Safe” options in the forward line this year, hence why i want to wait it out a bit more.

    1. You’re not wrong about the forward line! Huttabito has done a massive write-up about exactly that…..coming next week!
Solid line-up you have there, even without Danger……which is always a big Danger 😉

    2. I like the solid backline. Most teams posted have O’Shea at D4 and I think they will struggle to make enough $ to have the three remaining backline positions upgraded until late in the season.

      1. Here’s my thoughts after AFLX.

Def: Laird Shaw Sicily Coffield O’Shea Dear (Keeffe, Murray)

    3. if you were really that worried about smith you could maybe downgrade him and even upgrade a midfielder but absolutely great team!!!!

      1. Solid but wary of Rayner and Higgins and Smith we’ll see Midfield is awesome although no LDU. Back line Simpson…yes well there are other options McGrath McDonald Wilson….

      1. Danger, Dusty and Fyfe play as ball winners who rest in the forward line as they can pose a threat down there. Someone like M.Crouch, doesn’t, and rests on the bench – his TOG is much lower than the other 3.

This is the hopes for Carlton and Cripps. The article has words like “occasionally” and “pinch” littered throughout and sounds like Curnow will still be used predominately in the same role as last year. Cripps is one of the best inside mids in the comp, they need him at the contest. However. when they do throw Cripps forward (instead of the bench), there’s more chances to score so if anything, I see it as a positive. Combined with how cheap he is and his bye, he’s a no brainer and just a typical fluff article the AFL has written to fill space that we supercoaches think to much about.

        1
        1. Ok Cool he was going to be in my team regardless because of his bye and price like you have mentioned, I just wanted to let everyone know because players like Dahlhaus played fwd and had an a poor second part of the season

    1. Looks like a good line-up Chris. I like the Coniglio pick, could have a real break-out year like Kelly last year. He averaged 105 in 2016. He only played 7 games during the season, but a couple of his big scores came during the finals last year (132, 126), which I don’t think has effected his price for this year. I may have just talked myself into picking him!

    1. Some ballsy PODs there, I’d just prefer to see them in different positions tbh………
Sicily to defence, Walters to the forward line…….like the Merrett pick from the start, big POD early……

      1

      1
      1. I would prefer that too. Have them there atm pending rookie selections. Worst case, i move them around as downgrades pop up throughout the year (rookie def out, for. rookie in, etc)

        1

        1
    2. Loose Rioli and Ah Chee, Lobb later when 100% Smith and Sicily daring and could pay off…not sold on Walters yet and Higgins sounds like later on

  7. This is my first shot at a team so rip into it

    Defense: R.Laird, D.Rich, J.Lloyd, N.Coffield, S.Murray, C.O’Shea (T.Doedee, l.Keeffe)

    Midfield: P.Dangerfield, Z.Merrett, T.Mitchell, N.Fyfe, L.Parker, P.Cripps, LDU, J.Garlett (P.Ahern, D. Barry, N.Holman

    Forwards: S.Menegola, I.Heeney, L.Dahlhaus, C.Rayner, J.Higgins, L.Ryan (W.Rioli, C.Spargo)

Rookies obviously are going to change so please let me know about the premiums

    1. Lloyd is probably a good pick. After his concussion in Rnd 10, he only posted 1 game over 100. Prior to that, he had 5 games over 100 and nothing less than 84. Assuming some natural improvement, he should be a very classy pick.

I’m not sure about Menegola, whether he is worth the money. But he does look super fit after seeing a little of the X. You can probably pick him up as a fallen premo through the year.

      1

      1. Thanks for the feedback
With the FWD’s and DEF’s there are really not many consistent keepers
I’d put Hurley but he has had his injury cloud from the knock in training same with Yeo
In the fwd line Robbie Gray seems like a decent option but he got pulled out of AFLX so now I don’t know about him along with his bye
If Hurley or Yeo and Curnow do well in the JLT I might drop menegola to Curnow and upgrade potentially rich to Hurley
        Again thanks for the feedback

  8. Hurley, Yeo, Laird, Hibberd, O’Shea, Doedee
    Murray, Goddard

Mitchell, Kelly, M.Crouch, Fyfe, Coniglio, Griffen, LDU, Higgins
    Wigg, Ahern, Freeman

    Jacobs, Gawn
    Cameron

Heeney, Billings, Dahlhaus, Kirby, Keeffe, Ryan
    Dawson, Rioli

    Will assess rookies after JLT.

Griffen could be a big money maker if he gets anywhere near his best, an average of 90 will push him up by about 200k.

    What do you think

    2

    3
    1. GWS supporter by chance?

I don’t think Griffen is even worth the $277k. He’s 33 later this year and had the last 2 years pretty interrupted by injury. Last year, he played the first 3 games, so supposing he came off an OK pre-season his highest score was only 77.

GWS have since brought in Deledio and the younger guys have improved, so I think he’d be quite low on the pecking order. He may get some time on the half back line, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is his last year, even retiring halfway through.

      4

      1
    2. Hate to say it, terrific players in their prime, but Griffen and Deledio are finished.

Difficult to see when they will resume & how many consecutive games they can play.

They still have an important role though…..on the training track, helping the kids….

  10. Playing around with a few teams at the moment.
Just some thoughts on this setup.

Def: Hurley, Laird, Hibberd, O’Shea, Murray, Doedee (Morgan, Cummings)
Mid: Danger, Mitchell, Fyfe, Bont, Cripps, Coniglio, LDU, Brodie (Barry, Kelly, Holman)
    Ruck: Jacobs, Gawn. (Olango)
Fwd: Heeney, Greene, Dahlhaus, Setterfield, Higgins, Garlett, (Ahern, Ryan)

Rookies will change as we get closer to the R1.
3 expensive rookies in at the moment, in case cheaper ones pop up.
Greene sitting there, could become Curnow if money is required elsewhere.
Team works well with byes too.
    Feedback welcomed.

    RUC: Gawn, NicNat (Lavender)

FWD: Heeney, Billings, Dahl, Lobb, Higgins, Ryan (Garlett, Spargo)

Got 50k left but if Lobb and Billings dont get up im thinking of going Lobb ->Petracca, Billings -> Greene and Hanley -> Maynard which would leave me with 29k but would be able to get more dollars by downgrading Coffield.

    1. Solid structure and obviously rookies will change however higgins will more than likely be a downgrade target after hardwicks recent comments suggesting he wont play early.

Also as a fellow cats fan although i like smith as a ruckmen and think he will improve this year, spending 500k on him is a very risky pick and im not sure its worth it / has a high enough reward

      2

      1
      1. Cheers Zac. I hadn’t heard about Higgins.

Zmith isn’t locked yet, but I had Nankervis there before and after checking his numbers, decided Smith was better for marginally more cash. I feel he’s more likely to be at worst, what you pay for, or he could improve a little more.

        1

        1
        1. Go with your gut. If it pays off Smith could turn out to be a great pick. Looking further into his numbers i can understand your reasoning. He increased his average by around 15ppg last year and finished the last 5 games of the season with 4 tonnes (133,119, 103,103 and an 80).

Getting yourself a good POD with him being in only 1% of teams. Could give you an edge over opponents if you take the risk.

          Good luck 🙂

          3

  15. Here is V3 of my team with a tactical change of 4-5-2-3 premium lineup given the forward line premium selection dilemma situation:

Def: Hurley, Hibberd, Rich, McGovern, Naughton, O’Shea (Doedee, Cumming)

Mid: Danger, Martin, Mitchell, J Kelly, Fyfe, Brayshaw, LDU, J Higgins ( T Kelly, Barry, Holman)

    Ruck: Jacobs, Gawn

Fwd: Billings, McLean, D Smith, Ahearn, Dawson, Venables (Starcevich, Ryan)

    $20k change.

TU: for a 4-5-2-3 premium structure?
TD: for a 3-6-2-3 premium structure?

    7

    15
    1. I just can’t see Rich as premium defender. The only thing worse than having him in your team is watching him play. He wouldn’t register a hard ball get at Auskick.

      4

      1
      1. I currently have him in my team as a bit of a POD
He averaged over 90 last year and I believed he played most games so for a consistent and durable premium defender that’s cheaper then Laird Yeo and Hurley it’s not bad. I heard somewhere (can’t remember now) that with witherden and hodge they are planning to move Rich higher up the ground which may be good for scoring
I originally had Jeremy Howe instead of Rich but there was an article on the AFL website that Howe had a calf or Achilles complaint I believe so I didn’t want to take any chances. If Hurley is fine from his wrist knock I will upgrade Rich however

        0

        1
    2. Like the midfield premos with Fyfe the only injury risk of the 5. Thoughts behind no Laird? I would ditch one of your expensive rookies such as Brayshaw, Naughton or LDU and change Rich to Yeo, Laird or Howe. I don’t consider D Smith a premium either

    1. A nice balanced team. The only questions I would have are whether all of treloar, Coniglio and Cripps are top 10 mid potential? Maybe consider dropping one of your premium forwards for a rookie and free up cash for a premium mid upgrade to a Mitchell, Fyfe, J Kelly, Merrett type. I really like your defence with many POD there. Good luck!

    1. Too many risks that dont provide much reward for my liking.

Don’t be putting players in based on AFLX wait for JLT which will give you a much better indication of players roles and positions they will be used in over the season.

Id downgrade Rioli to a rookie such as setterfield and one of wilson / touhey / burton so you can upgrade armitage to a premo you can trust with the C each week and will average 110+

    1. Very balanced team, like the PODs in Zorko and Treloar – very solid midfield with two gun rookies to round it out. I’m not sold on Lloyd while McVeigh and would look to upgrade one of Smith/Petracca in the forwards otherwise looks good.

      2

      1
      1. I kind of feel that Lloyd is only going to excel, more midfield time and he’s always near the top for disposals. I had Lloyd at the start of last season and killed it, I know McVeigh was out but his average only went down because he got injured and scored poorly in that game. I could also look at getting in Crisp for him but not sure!!

        0

        1
        1. Lloyd went 92, 100 and 99 the 3 weeks after injury (Rd12-14), so it didn’t effect him at all. McVeigh returned Rd15 and Lloyd averaged 81 thereafter so was definitely impacted. He’s a half backer, not a midfielder, if McVeigh were to injure himself between now and Rd1, I agree, Lloyd would be an absolute lock. Just my two cents, good luck!

          4

          1
    2. Was seriously underimpressed with Doedee think he will struggle to make best 22. In front of Cheney and Keath. Starcevich I think will be a later season arrival.

Worpel was a gun, and Sicily I need to see in a backline role again. He made a lot of mistakes. Rioli, O Shea and Dow looked good so there are options out there

I haven’t made any changes yet until JLT but these thoughts will weigh on me.

    1. I know at this point it’s getting old, it would be more useful if you traded Coffield for someone like a Cameron O’Shea, or a Lochie O’Brien even, who are more than likely going to play the whole 23 (Barring injury or course). They might find it easier to score while O’Shea is one of the leading candidates to take over the Docherty role, and O’Brien will easily slide into the outside mid job along with his mentor Ed Curnow. Also… No Doedee?

      1

      1
      1. Also it has been hinted that the void left by Williams and Wilson will be taken up by a younger player, so keep a look out for Cumming or Finlayson during the preseason to see what GWS’s game plan is.

    1. Get a proven performer. Laird should be in your team 100%. I don’t know why you have Shuey? Why is DeGoey in your midfield. Trade out Shuey for a full premium like Kelly and downgrade DeGoey for a rookie.

Obviously like everyone at this point of the season rookies are subject to JLT and round one selection likelihood. Down back last season 5 players averaged 100 or over. Docherty (Knee) and Adams (Mid only) the other three were Hurley, Laird and Hibberd. Two of which come off a season out of the game and all three averages have been trending upwards each year. All in there prime so I’ve taken those three. In the Midfield I have loaded up on the stars. I just don’t see how the likes of Danger. Martin and Mitchell don’t end up the top three kids again they were 4-5 points on average better than the rest of competition last year with no slowing down. Yes it’s a large chunk of your salary but it’s three rock solid captain options each week. Kelly had a breakout year and is only trending up. Gets the ball inside and out. Classy finisher and hit the scoreboard a lot this year I debated with taking his teammate Lachie Whitfield here as I think he could do what Kelly did last year and add 10-15 points to his average. In the forward line I have Gray and Dahlhaus who according to all reports played more than 50-60% of the year injured last season still averaging around 90 so there is only upside there. Billings has started to deliver on his ability. He can hit the scoreboard and if not for such a shocking kicking a goal record especially early in the season last year he may well have averaged easily over 100. With players like Armitage and Steven fit and firing it’s hard to see sides wanting to tag Billings. Rucks everyone obviously doing set and forget. Only 2 rucks averaged 100 last season. Kreuzer and Ryder. Ryder has the awkward bye and is high in price. Kreuzer I think unlikely to replicate his form from last season. Gawn can return to his 110+ average and if Nic Nat is fit and firing for round one I think he picks himself despite the injury risk. Especially at that price. Please tell me where my logic sucks or you think I’ve over spent etc. all views welcome.

  38. So not sure where to place this. But…If i build a team with dangerfield in it. and am happy with every other selection. Before round one, downgrade danger to a money making player i.e coniglio(or whomever) to see how danger goes.
If i keep the money from my dangerfield downgrade with the intent of bringing him back in straight away if he goes ballistic(ave 140+). Or if he is going sub par (120-)then use the money for something else and trade him in like a regular premium later on.
With that said the decision will be made before the price change.
I know it burns a trade, but is this worth exploring?
Sorry if this is supposed to be posted elsewhere.

I’ve been moving my team around a lot this year but this one has stuck for a while now so here it is, The only other move i feel i could make is Jacobs to Nic Nat and then pendlebury to any midfielder under $630,000.

    1. Cobey, like the foundations of the team, some good PODs, I think the risk vs reward of Barlow is worth.
Don’t touch NicNat, news coming out isn’t good and has hardly done any full training, just laps on his own.
Not having Danger is a gamble as is O’Meara as many found out last year
Personally i would go Wilson from Freo over Shaw saving money and don’t think there is a big PPG difference, maybe even more upside to Wilson.

    1. You’ve only left yourself one upgrade position in the mids so if as is likely three or four players outperform your starters you are going to have to do sideways trades or cop less points each week.
I’d be dropping one of your mids and using the extra money plus the $153k you have left to improve pretty ordinary defenders and forwards.

  43. G’day guys,

    Feedback welcome.

Yep, I have gone with G. Ablett and no Danger. My theory is Ablett will start strong and then get busted by about the bye and Danger to drop in price during that period and then step up in absence of Ablett. Trade Ablett for Danger mid season with a financial gain and points gained early on.

    1. Strengthen your midfield in Team 1. Majority of points are generated from there. This will mean dropping possibly Barlow and maybe even one more of those midprice forwards to rookies and getting maybe Kelly? You have gone without Danger and Martin so you need to fill that void with more good midfielders.

  52. Hi folks, just mucking around with the game I thought I would try and get the highest Round 1 Projected total that I could for a side thst could take the field this season (excluding long term injuries and indefinate suspensions). The score I came up with is 2,293 for the following team:
Backs:Roberton, Shaw, Saad, Angus Brsyshaw, Seedsman, Harry Morrison
Mids: Mitchell, Ablett, Treloar, Ebert, Wines, Lambert, Graham, Corey Maynard
    Rucks: Hickey , Simpson

All intrrvhange players are $102,400 rookies.

  58. Def: Laird, Simpson,Lloyd, doedee, O’Shea, Morgan (cumming, Murray)

Mid: Danger, Sloane, Fyfe, Bontempelli, Parker, Cripps, LDU, Kelly (Bailey, Worpel, Giro)

    Ruck: Gawn, Nic nat (Cameron)

Fwd: Heeney, Dahlhaus, Smith, Ahern, Dawson, Fristch (Mccartin, Ryan)

Simpson going to be better without docherty, Sloane has 8 of first 11 games at the Adelaide oval, Parker only main mid to have a full pre season, not sure about Dahlhaus or smith as both could be very risky. 363.3k remaining
