Rate My JAN Team 2

Written by Schwarzwalder on January 16 2018

No SC-Gold?  No worries!  Don’t let that be the only reason you haven’t started on your line-up for 2018.  Huttabito has been good enough to organise our very own Team Picker program at SCT.

So get cracking, Coaches!  If you need some help, you can always check out the previous ‘Rate My Team‘ thread.  Send in your teams to be analysed by the SCT Coaches.

  1. Had 17 hours in transit with nothing but a team planner on my CPU to play with –

    Yeo – Laird – Hibberd
    Sicily – O’Shea – Murray
    (Doedee – Eagles)

    Danger – Martin – Kelly
    Oliver – Cripps – O’Meara
    Freeman – Barry
    (Kelly – Naish – Polson)

    Gawn – Nicnat
    (Olango)

    Heeney – Gray – Petracca
    Christensen – Ryan – Ahern
    (Rioli – Garlett)

I was gonna go four straight premiums in defence and think I might revert back to it – seems really obvious that Willams and the three guys I’ve picked will be top 8 and I don’t think its something that should be looked in the mouth. I HATE Sicily and don’t want to pick him but his numbers from the back half of last year are la flame.

I want to make Cripps Bont but can’t figure it out just yet.

Forwards are miserable – even moreso now that Bennell isn’t selectable. I’m trying to choose between Petracca and Smith, but I really think Petracca is the type of pick this year is begging for.

    1. What better way to spend 17hrs in transit? 😉 I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that Yeo is a top DEF…….burnt me too often…but that’s just me 😉

  2. DEF: K. Simpson, Z. Williams, N. Wilson, C. O’Shea, T. Doedee, L. Keeffe (S. Murray, A. Johnson)

    MID: P. Dangerfield, D. Martin, D. Zorko, D. Beams, N. Fyfe, P. Cripps, L. Davies-Uniake, P. Dow (N. Freeman, H. Wigg, T. Kelly)

    RUC: S. Jacobs, N. Naitanui (T. Olango)

    FWD: D. Smith, C. Curnow, R. Lobb, J. Stringer, A. Christensen, J. Higgins (P. Ahern, J. Garlett)

    $127,700 left over.

Thanks to Kochie’s bloody China game, I’ve decided I’ll hold off on Ryder until that has been and gone, and to hope that Nic Nat can last until then. I’ve also stuck with my Stringer selection for now (he’s not training with Essendon’s midfield group for fun).

As you can see, all this has left me with a sizeable chunk of money left over. I’m not quite sure what I want to do with it yet.

    1. Great team.

A couple of options to use the remaining salary are.
      1. N Wilson to R Laird/ M Hurley by taking C O’Shea out for E Richards/H Goddard/etc.

      2. D Martin to J Kelly which then allows N Wilson to R Laird/M Hurley/M Hibberd

      3. C O’Shea to H Goddard, D Zorko to S Pendlebury , N Wilson to J Lloyd and P Cripps for T Mitchell

    2. Can’t see any definite keepers in the forward line. May cost a lot of trades during the season to keep it competitive.
I’d downgrade a midfielder and use the money left over to upgrade a couple of forwards instead of having five speculative picks. Otherwise a decent team.

      5

      3
      1. I could see potentially 3 fwd keepers there. I think Curnow and Lobb will surprise many and I currently have them in my team. Personally I’d be a little hesitant to go with both Stringer and Smith and would look to downgrade one to a rookie and use those funds (along with yr money in the bank) to upgrade a rookie in your backs. Nice looking team though mate (for a Carlton supporter 😉 )

          1. Is this just a gut feel pieman or do u have particular reasons/numbers which would support your opinion? You seem really strong on this. Not having a crack at all – genuine question, as I really can’t see much downside at all to the Lobb selection, but maybe I have overlooked something? Previous scoring history, combined with a new roll that IMO is more supercoach friendly, should generally lead to greater scoring output.

    3. Hey Jack,
for what it’s worth, I reckon the FWDs are a touch too speculative. From those first five picks, I’d choose two (three at the absolute max.) then down-/up-grade the rest to a rookie and premium.

    4. Well, this has generated a bit more discussion than I’d thought it would.

@Adam: Those are all great options. I think I like #2 the best, but again, they’re all good. I suppose I could also bank the extra cash and use it for an accelerated upgrade (and potentially save a trade in the process).

@Champ, @Daniels_Riches, @Schwarzwalder: I think Curnow and Lobb will definitely average 90+, and Smith more than likely will, too. Christensen should average at least 80, which will make him a fine F6/7 if he can stay on the park. Stringer is the main question mark for me.

@Lukey27: That could work, but Beams is an absolute beast without Rockliff around, and I think Cripps is ready to explode (somebody’s got to take Gibbs’ points). Still, both do carry some injury risk, so swapping one for someone more durable is certainly not out of the question.

    1. Some interesting pics mate. Really like the McLean selection in your forwards. I’d be looking at other options for Griffen, Crisp and possibly Birchall. I like the way you have tried to stay away from the pack and run with a few different names though.

    2. Don’t mind it, Vinny. The Ellis train is gaining momentum over the last few weeks, might be worth a go. Not so sure I’d bother with Griffen anymore, probably better off going with a top Rookie and saving a few bucks……

  6. A few tweaks have been made since the previous thread. Recent Bennell news has me wanting to give him the flick, but would need to upgrade to a premium otherwise the forward line will be pretty weak.
    $133,700 remaining.

  7. G’day guys,
Have made a few adjustments to the team.

Def: Hurley, Laird, Hibberd, Brayshaw, Doedee, Murray (Goddard, Richards)
Mid: Danger, Dusty, Kelly, Crouch, Fyfe, Cripps, T. Kelly, Ahern (Freeman, Worpel, Holman)
    Ruck: Gawn, NicNat (Jefferies)
Fwd: Gray, Curnow, Lobb, Christensen, Higgins, Venables (Garlett/Ryan)
    $16,600 remaining

Down back I’ve gone with 3 steady, proven and pretty reliable defenders, Brayshaw as my Birchall replacement for now and fielding 2 rookies.

In the mids, I have floated going without Danger, but just doesn’t feel right. Have gone with 6 premiums who I believe (fingers crossed) will end up as top-ten midfielders. Would love to have LDU in there, but funds won’t allow. JS of some of my mid rookies worries me a little.

The rucks are pretty standard, with Gawn and NicNat representing good value, but as we all know come with an injury risk. Olango is a no-brainer for me as my loophole option for 2018, as West Coast play 6 of the first 10 games on a Sunday!

In the fwds, I have only gone for one ‘proven performer’ in Gray and went for a couple of blokes that I think could push up their averages close to 100 in Curnow and Lobb. Adam has done the numbers on Curnow in another RMT thread and I believe Lobb will take over the number one ruck role at GWS, leading to greater scores. Christensen represents good value as an F4 if he can play at least up until the bye and then hopefully target an upgrade such as Heeney. Again, the JS of some rookie fwds will need to be determined.

All feedback welcomed and appreciated. Cheers 🙂

    1. Don’t mind your team DR…

      Backs and mids are fine.
The rucks are my worry. Getting 22 games out of both with no R/F link in 2018.
Forwards I’d try get in at least one of Heeney, Billings or even Greene.

      Overal nice balanced team.

      1. Cheers TS. Yeah those rucks are a worry arn’t they. To be honest have just locked in that combo from the start, but will play around with it a bit and see what I can do. I originally had Heeney in, but due to a limited pre-season have stayed away for now. Think Greene will miss a bit of the pre-season also, but like Billings as a pick. A bit to think about. Thanks for the feedback mate

    2. Lobb might get the number 1 ruck spot at GWS but he’s a rubbish ruck so he’s average would decline not increase
Is Nic Nat training with the main group? No.
Will Laird get Brodie Smith’s 2017 role so that Gibbs can be the half back general? Probably.
Still a lot of work to do D_R, remember that 2018 isn’t 2017 nice try though

      2

      14
      1. Appreciate your constructive feedback pieman, but completely disagree on Lobb. ‘Rubbish puck’ is a big call. If his average declines if he gets the number one ruck spot, Ill happily shout you a carton of your favourite beer! IMO Laird will be one of the safest pics in the back line. Not too sure if NicNat is training with the main group, but my rucks do worry me, particularly having a non-playing R3. Not sure about the 2017 comment, but again thanks for the response. Would love to see your team

      2. Rory Lobb:

2017 average when Mumford playing: 69.5
2017 average when Mumford not playing: 100.5

So much for his average declining when playing in the ruck. In case you think this is a coincidence:

Correlation between SuperCoach score and hitouts when Mumford playing: .23
Correlation between SuperCoach score and hitouts when Mumford not playing: .76

  8. The fun starts again in 2018!

    V2
Def: Yeo, Laird, Z.Williams, Byrne, Gardiner, Doedee (Morgan, Richards)

    Ruck: Jacobs, Gawn (Olango)
Fwd: Billings, Heeney, Greene, Christensen, Higgins, Garlett (Ahern, Venables)

It’s a start, rookies will change as we get closer to the R1.
I have a few expensive rookies in at the moment, if cheaper ones pop up they’re in, more $$$ in the bank then.
Christensen/Byrne are on watch list at the moment.

    Feedback welcomed.

    1. Zorko is the safe pick, but Rocky gone could get tagged.

Laird Williams Lloyd Keefe Goddard Murray ( Gardiner Doedee )

Martin Mitchell Kelly Fyfe beams Cripps Dow Davies-Uniack ( Higgins ahern Kelly)

    Ryder Jacobs. (English)

Billings Dalhousie lobb b ah chee Rayner
    Powell (Garlett Ryan)

    6

    1
    1. I’d say you’re destined to do pretty well 😉

The only real issue is that Ryder has an awkward bye due to the China game. This could be mitigated if English gets a regular game, otherwise you’ll end up copping a doughnut that week.

Other than that, it looks good.

      3

      0
      1. Everybody you pick is going to have a bye at some stage. Given Ryder is his only Port or Gold Coast player being one short in that round and then having him for all the other byes seems ok to me.

        1

        0
        1. True. But the difference with Ryder is that his bye round is (as far as we know) full-22 scoring, rather than the best-18 scoring of the other bye rounds.

          7

          0
    2. A nice version 2 mate. Looking good. My main concern would probably be your D4. I think that will be one of the toughest positions to pick this year. I like your Billings and Williams picks.

      2

      0
    1. Would certainly be a POD mate, but personally can’t see him being a top 10 mid, which is probably what u would be expecting at his price. Just my opinion though, he could be a sneaky pic with Steven getting most of the oppositions attention each week.

      4

      0
  12. First effort at a 2018 team.

ALL rookies are subject to change, i have done no research whatsoever on them, they are all placeholders, i will be all eyes on the JLT and this website 🙂 With the exception of C Spargo for the loophole.

    Defence
    R Laird, K Simpson, A Rance
    T Doedee, S Murray, H Goddard ( R Gardener L Keeffe)

    Midfield
    C Oliver, N Fyfe, D Beams, P Cripps
    T Rockliffe, S Coniglio, C Ellis- Yolmen, N Freeman ( J Higgins T Kelly, C Spargo)

    Rucks
    M Gawn, N Naitanui (T English)

    Forwards
    I Heeney, R Gray, M Wallis,
    R Lobb, B Deledio, P Ahern (W Rioli, J Garlett)

Would really like an extra premium in defence, and will probably come at the expense of someone in the forward line, however i cant bring myself to change it at the moment.

Someone has to run a team without having danger from the start, i will not pay $750k and it has absolutely nothing to do with me being a bitter Crows fan, Absolutely nothing i tell you, Nothing at all!!! Will be an upgrade target as soon as possible.

First name on my teamsheet for 2018 was Clayton Oliver, just loved watching that kid play last year (was actually one of the lucky ones who picked him from round 1 last year). Probably the most consistent player of last year.

Rucks, experience tells me they’re always a gamble no matter who you pick, so i’ll run with the gamble most people are going for.

All feedback appreciated, and good luck to everyone here for the coming season.

    7

    3
    1. PODs I Like: Simmo, Oliver, Wallis
      PODs I Don’t: Rance, Ellis-Yolman, Deledio

Reckon you’re one to strong up forward, and it’s hurting your midfield. Only two rookies on field looks good…but I have serious doubts the other 6 are all keepers if you want to have a serious crack at it. Rance is a good player, but I think there are better option at that price (Lloyd and Tuohy being two I’d seriously look at). Ellis-Yolmen…just not sure he breaks into that midfield and then performs well enough to justify selection.

Deledio down to a rookie. +$200k
      Ellis-Yolmen down to LDU. +$70k
Rance to Lloyd/Tuohy (personal preference). +$10k

$280k added to that midfield turns Rockliff and Beams (considerable injury risks) into reliable top-tier premiums (Mitchell, Kelly, Dusty, Zorko, Crouch, Merrett, Neale etc.).

      7

      0
      1. Thanks Blueballs, gonna run with Rance though I think, just really don’t like the look of premium defenders aside from Laird

Ellis Yolman I’m probably inclined to agree somewhat and let him go.

Food for thought, once the JLT starts I’ll reassess

        1

        0
      2. Seriously considering Jake K. Two important defenders out of the Geelong side and with Zac Williams down D3/D4 spots are up for grabs.

Of course for only a few hundred more the old warhorse from Carlton Kade Simpson is on offer.

How old can you go before your gut says no?

    1. If you have tried to make this the hardest team ever to read, congratulations I think you have done it.
As for the team itself it is obviously very guns “n” rookies which is ok but I doubt many of the current rookies will still be there come round one.

      14

    1. Armitage is the only one with form. Petracca needs a big jump and I dont think De Goey has the talent to be a top 6.

      2

  15. Have made a few more tweaks:

DEF: Laird, Hibberd, Williams, Richards, Doedee, Murray (Keeffe, Goddard)
MID: Danger, Titch, Zorko, Crouch, Fyfe, Cripps, LDU, Brodie (Ahern, Kelly, Worpel)
    RUC: Jacobs, Gawn (English)
FWD: Franklin, Curnow, Lobb, Ah Chee, Higgins, Venables (Garlett, Ryan)

Mulling over a possible Franklin/Jacobs switch to Billings/Ryder, but need to give some more thought to the repercussions during PA’s annoying lone bye round.

Fprecast upgrade targets would then be:
    DEF – Hurley, Yeo, Simmo
    MID – Dusty, Kelly
    FWD: Heeney, Billings, Dahlhaus

Ah Chee I’d be hoping to keep as this year’s Jack Steele, who ended up as my M9/F7 injury cover.

Time to look for the next keeper in the defence

    1. Yep. Thats just made me look at another star forward and another budget defender.

I guess that makes Dahl look better. And Robbo too I guess.

  17. What’s everyone’s thoughts on bringing in heath Shaw now that Williams is done? Nice cheap option for someone that can score high

    1. I wouldn’t rule out Shaw, but I’m also not keen on pulling the trigger with him. Still licking my wounds after last year. Burnmen burn.

      2

    2. Yeah. He’s a possible.

Remember Jake Kolodnalphabet also has two down in the Geelong defence and there’s talk of Tuohy getting more mid time.

Tough choice between those two and Kade Simpson since Carlton are down Docherty.

      1

      0
  18. First Docherty, now Williams. Most of the remaining premiums are either not all that premium, or not terribly trustworthy (I’m looking at you, Yeo). Is it time to think about starting a budget backline?

    1

    0
      1. That’s actually kind of my point. Sure, there are still premiums, but none of them are *that* premium. Laird, Hurley, and Hibberd all averaged around 100, but the rest only averaged low-to-mid 90s.

  19. Def: Hurley, Laird, Hibberd, Brayshaw, Murray, Cumming (Doedee, Mirra)

Mid: Danger, Mitchell, Merrett, Fyfe, Beams, Blakely, LDU, Bailey (H. Brayshaw, Worpel, Giro)

    Ruck: Natgawn (Hayes)

Fwd: Heeney, D. Smith, Lobb, Ah Chee (WCE), Higgins, Ahern (T. English, Ryan)

Couple queries, been experimenting with a no-Danger lineup, where I’d replace danger and LDU with Jack Steven and Jack Redden who I think will both be pushing 100 averages.

Also, with midfield minutes opened up in West coast, it’s my opinion that this will actually hurt yeo, as he dominated off halfback but looked a little lost in the guts. Redden and Ah Chee will make the biggest strides in that mid group.

      1. Think his game goes to the elite level this year.
Take out a 7 and a 13 from last season and he averages 99 with 35% of his games at 114+
        Criminally underrated

  21. Laird, Hibberd, Ellis, Coffield, O’Brien, Ling (Doedee, Goddard)
Danger, Titch, M.Crouch, Neale, Fyfe, Cripps, Brayshaw, LDU (T.Kelly, Barry, Worpel)
    Gawn, Sandi (English)
Billings, Barlow, Lobb, Christensen, Dawson, Ryan (Langdon, Venebles)

Neale has been a starter for me two years running which worked out well, he’s a good age now to maybe step up. I’m interested to see how the new Perth stadium affects SC scores, they say it’s shaped a bit like the MCG – not sure if this is good or bad?

Sandi is risky, however so is NicNat, and I’m really only looking for him to last until after the Port bye and I’ll look for whichever Ruck is looking like a top two at that stage, who knows he might even average 100 until then. Plus, I feel he is likely to score higher than NicNat until then so if he breaks down then he’ll hopefully be around 500k + making a sideways trade easy enough. Picking top two rucks is always hard to predict at the start of any season anyway and hopefully English plays enough to cover as a worst case scenario.

I like the idea of investing in rookies, especially on field ones, who are likely to score slightly higher and have better potential JS ie. Coffield, Brayshaw & LDU. Plus I have enough invested at this time of year to change to most rookies come round 1. Deledio may play Williams’ role opening a spot on the forward flank for mature aged Langdon. A good read on the Sydney website about Jordan Dawson and winning the Cathy Lees medal this year..

    1. Don’t forget with Tippett retiring Naismith should go straight to #1 ruck.

Might be a chance to save some coin.

      1. No value in Naismith, played 13 games without him last year and averaged 65. Majority of those games he was the #1 ruck, averaged 28 hitouts and was offered relief from Sinclair or Towers.

In fact, his top score last year was 87 in Rd1 when he shared with Tippett.

        1. Still young and developing. I don’t think we’ve seen anywhere near the best of Naismith yet.

I do like Towers though feel he’s deserved a bit more of a shot than he has got so far.

Will be an interesting one to watch preseason.

    1. One of the rare teams that I’ve seen with Pendles……how times have changed 😉 Very ambitious with both De Goey & McGrath for the entire season, still prefer to wait and see with both of them…….

      1. Far from comfortable with it Schawrz, Pendles is likely to be playing behind the ball and his disposal should rack up a few inside 50’s. Danger is a lot of money particularly with Gaz coming back into the side, he may turn into a Kelly and be upgraded later.De Goey’s disposal is a tad suspect but I’m hearing he’s been working on that over the summer and with Pendles going back should see a lot of midfield time. Not a wrap for Buckley reakon he’s cost Pendles at least a Brownlow maybe 2.

  23. Hello all.

Early stages. ( need to plan Byes) I wont bother with the rookies yet, only keepers.

    D… Hibberd / Simpson / Roberton.

    M… Dusty / TMitch / J Kelly / Fyfe / Bont / Shuey.

    R… Jacobs / McEvoy

    F… T Green / Billings / D Smith or J Watts.

    I know. I know.

Call me crazy but you cant win this without going a few PODs

I’ve tried to pick consistant durable players ( TMitch , Simpson) and young guns ( Kelly,Bont , Billings). With a mix of players I who I feel are underrated and about to hit their prime. (Shuey , Roberton)

    1. Couple of ballsy picks there but might be worth a go (Roberton, D.Smith). Not sure I’d bother with McEvoy or Shuey for the entire season. I’m thinking they’re possible handy pick-ups later in the year (if you get them before a purple patch)…….

    2. Love the defensive picks.

Reckon there are much better options than Shuey – a POD is all well and good, but if he’s scoring 10 points less than the common alternative it’s not a great result. In 8 seasons he’s averaged over 100 twice, peaking at 105.6 in 2016. Unless you’re confident he’ll jump from a 96 avg last year to 110 this year, he’s a no for mine.

McEvoy? Interesting choice. He was about on par with Jacobs last year, and seems to be reasonably durable. Not sure taking him over Gawn is the right move though. Maybe Gawn/McEvoy is the better combo?

Greene’s been in and out of my side a bit – lots of potential…for scoring and getting rubbed out. My head says Billings should be in the prime breakout zone, but my heart says he’s a bit soft and will be bullied out of games semi-regularly. Smith is a huge injury risk in my book, and doesn’t warrant selection. Watts on the other hand is one that’s been floating around the back of my head for the last month or two – could be an inspired pick, but he could end up playing fourth fiddle to an already dangerous forward line.

  24. With Williams out I’ve had to rethink a little.

DEF: Laird, Hibberd, Simpson, Richards, Murray, Keeffe (Doedee, Goddard)
MID: Dusty, Titch, Zorko, Crouch, Fyfe, Cripps, LDU, Coffield (Ahern, Kelly, Worpel)
    RUC: Jacobs, Gawn (English)
FWD: Heeney, Dahlhaus, Curnow, AhChee, Higgins, Venables (Garlett, Ryan)

About $25k in the bank for further rookie adjustments (or Hibberd -> Hurley?).

  26. Here’s my latest….heavily guns n roses….gambles are no nicgawn (but Jacobs and bbm both played 21 games at least and scored 2000 pts in 2017…why take the risk), or danger, but as it stands, bye round outs are 4/8/9/9….gonna try and maintain that and not have to trade. Defs are the upgrade area. Rookies subject to change as always, lots of DPP.

  27. As soon as I found out SC was open for everyone, I’ve been working on this since about 12:30am (now almost 3am). This is what I have so far.

    DEF – M. Hibberd, D. Roberton, A. Witherden, A. McGrath, G. Birchall, T. Doedee (A. Naughton, S. Murray)

    MID – D. Martin, T. Mitchell, S. Pendlebury, I. Heeney, S. Coniglio, J. Graham, C. Rayner, LDU (D. Fogarty, J. Garlett, T. Kelly)

    RUC – M. Gawn, N. Naitanui (L. Lavender)

    FWD – R. Gray, M. Walters, R. Lobb, C. Rioli, A. Christensen, L. Ryan (J. Higgins, Z. Langdon)

Sooooo as you can see, I’m not the type to just go bonkers and tank up my midfield with six 500k+ players. I like to spread the cash around a little so the other positions don’t get too dry of potential points (A mistake which almost ruined my forward line for the year).

As you’ve probably realized too, I haven’t picked Danger. I’ve gone with Dusty as my season beginnning star. I’m planning to get Danger when he drops about $100k. Main reason though is that I just get the impression Dusty will have a better start to the year. Also with Gaz now being back at the cattery, Danger’s number may drop a little, depending on how much of the game Gaz may dominate (and how much his floppy shoulders can take before they fall off again).

Next, there’s a couple of PODs for me this year. First of is Jack Graham. Now he’s still only $268k, and he looks to be averaging around 70-80. He averaged 7 tackles in the games he played last year, including finals. Tackles usually score a good number of points, so if he takes his high tackling game into this year, he’ll be sure to be a bargain in making around $100-150k by the time his price peaks. My plan right now is to use him for about 8-10 weeks, then upgrade him to someone better by the time the bye rounds arrive.

Another one that might be a POD, unless a fair few select him later on, is Michael Walters. I understand there are some usually more reliable players than him, but there are some stats that may interest you. Last year in the first 6 weeks he was averaging just over 60 when he spent most of his time in the forward, whereas when moved to the midfield he average about 100 for the rest of the season. One of the Docker’s coaching staff had mentioned a few days ago that he will be spending even more time in the midfield than he was getting last year. So I will be picking him in hoping he’ll get at least over $500k, and be consistently scoring around 100. Maybe that’s too much wishful thinking, but I’m having some high expectations for him.

Lastly, there are a couple of players I choosing over

    – Aaron Naughton or Cam O’ Shea
    – Andrew McGrath or Callum Mills.

What do you guys think? I want to make sure I have my defence as good as I can get, because my original plans was to get Doc and Williams as my first two. But now as either aren’t playing this season, it’s made decision making in this area quite tricky.

Feel free to give me any constructive criticism too 🙂
