  1. Hi guys, interested to know what you think.

BACKS: Laird, Whitfield, Short, Z.Williams, S.Collins, Quaynor, Wilkie, Hore

MIDS: Cripps, Fyfe, Neale, Martin, Taranto, Miles, Stocker, T.Atkins, J.Atley, Bewley, Hind

    RUCKS: Grundy, Lobb, Fort

FORWARDS: Dangerfield, Heeney, Dunkley, S.Bolton, Burgess, Cavarra, M.Parker, T.Wilkinson

    1. Not a bad team but too many mid priced/ gut feel players for me.
Short, Williams, Taranto, Miles, Lobb. In theory they’re not bad picks but it’s just not likely that all 5 will finish top 10 players

  2. Anyone have thoughts on Jaeger O’Meara? Surely has the potential to be an elite midfielder, not seeing him in many teams?

    1. I’ve thought long and hard about picking him, I just can’t trust his body at the moment, but with Mitchell out surely he’s ready to go to the next level. JLT to see

    2. Snags, you said Potential. Thats just that. Maybe Lets do an article on players with potential. Heaps of potential like Higgins. JOM had the same potential , was 200k cheaper and let down way too many people last year. When you think that you can take a chance on a Miles, Libba, Hall, for more than 100k less, why would you? at $500k you would only have him if you believe he is going to be top 10 elite mid. Otherwise he wont make you enough money to justify a trade. I am sure Father Dougal has a value for a trade you can check. Thats my opinion. People agree?

Well if you’re serious like you say – Leeuwinatics 903811.

  4. DEF: Lloyd, Simpson, Crisp, Z.Williams, S.Collins, Duursma (Wilkie, Burgess)

MID: Cripps, Neale, Bont, M.Crouch, Shuey, Stocker, Constable, Gibbons (Atley, Bewley, Cottrell)

    RUCK: Grundy, Goldy

FWD: Danger, Heeney, Dunkely, Setterfield, D.Moore (HAW), Stengle (Cavarra, Krueger)

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

  5. Hi Dusty, good team. Good call on the Bont and Shuey. Nice PODs. I just think that your defence is a tad heavy. This year many rookies in defence may start R1 so I rather beef up the Mids with at least 3 of the top 5 premos score beasts (You already have Cripps and Neale, maybe one more of Macrae, Oliver, Kelly, Fyfe ?). Mids tend to score more and thats where the serious points differential on the head to head will happen. On the Flip side IF (if) Shuey and the Bont are going to score well and IF they start on fire then you wouldnt worry about a trade to bring in a premo.
You probably also heard of Atley injury.

    1. Thanks for the reply. I feel like Bont is ready to step up and be an elite SC player (He is still only young after all) Was thinking off dropping Z.Williams or Crisp to B.Smith and might upgrade Shuey. Moving Atley to Hind as well. Thanks for all feedback.

  6. DEF: Whitfield, Witherden, Williams, Collins, Quaynor, Wilkie (burgess hore)

MID: Cripp, Kelly, Fyfe, Neal, Crouch, Walsh, Stocker, Valente
    (Bewley, Hind, Gibbons)

    RUCK: Grundy Goldy (Fort)

FWD: Danger, Heeney, TKelly, Rozee, Setterfield, Parker (Cavarra Corbett)

294k left.. HUGE kitty just don’t know where to use it right now. maybe greene F4

I feel im one premo short in the backline i had sicily locked from day 1 but he himself has said he will be swinging forward this year with gunston! PASS
LLoyd is overs he can’t play with mills its proven and laird with smith back makes me nervous. I feel more confident in a whitfield as D1 and williams and witherden providing value at D2/D3 with potential to go 95+ avg .

Walsh was libba til reading the game review of carlton v hawks yesty, the kid absolutely dominated the game & looks to be the real deal.. ill bank the 97k and take walsh.

So unsettled on my F3 currently sitting there is Kelly but McDonald, Riewoldt, Chaddy and Worpel have all had a stint there JLT will cement that place…

Also on my watchlist is the SC pig Rockliff. second year at port he will know there system better & be more confident. he will bounce back!

    1. Pretty much EXACTLY the same team I have at this stage ! With the same concerns as well, wanting another premo defender but hard to trust them with your above issues . Also struggling to lock in an F3, Mundy/gray/smith type for me at this stage .
      Good luck

    2. I think you can back Laird in to average 100+ minimum even with Smith back, scored 117 and 138 the 2 games Smith played.

      1

      2
    3. Hey Maverick, that is a pretty solid team.

As for your leftover cash, maybe look at losing Stocker for a mid level MID, try and work Miles in there or somebody similar.

Alternatively, That is a great kitty to start round 1 with.

    4. With regards to your comment on not including Lloyd. It looks like Mills will be playing a lot more through the midfield this year, so not sure he will have the same affect on Lloyd’s scoring as previous.

    in the fwd line.

    Fwd. Danger. J Hogan. D Smith. I rankine. J lukosius c rozee. Bench I mosquito b cavaara

Let me know what you guys think. I am a bit light in my fwds but all the rookies will play a lot.

    1. Too many low priced premo players in here I think. Would need everything to go your way to work. Hibberd, Smith, Viney, Crouch and Hogan will most likely not finish top 10 in their positions.

      0

      0
      1. Yep. Sidey and Crouch unlikely too. Yeo is struggling to play Rd1 and has had little/no pre-season making him a prime upgrade target.
Hate to say it, but I’d re-start from scratch. Sometimes it’s not a bad idea anyway.
The problem with constantly tweaking here and there is that you can end up with something that has no resemblance to your original team/thoughts.
        Good luck!

    2. I had a long reply to your team posted it and now it’s not here??

Basically you have to many midprice traps & inflated rookies especially up forward..
Keep one of rankine, rozee & lukosius.. down grade 2 too..
History tells us cash generation is more from 117-123k players and that’s what Rooks are all about they will never be keepers.

Down back you could even downgrade a smith/hibberd to a rookie and after doing that you should have a nice kitty to fix up a couple things. Your one Uber short in the guts mate grab a kelly, Oliver or Fyfe they will finish top 6. You don’t want to waste trades chasing them later mate.

Hope that helps and good luck

    3. Nick , You have a nicely balanced AFL team there but is it Supercoach relevant? There are just too many PODs. Good call on Yeo, Cripps, Danger , D Smith and your Rucks, but you need more of them . Otherwise you’ll run out of trade before you know it.
Also your defence is heavy but not by the right players ( think of players who will end up top 6 per position/line). By season end, You want to be able to have at least the top 15 premos in your side , that means in your case, you would have to trade out many of the premos you have started with. Would you have enough cash and trades? I am sure you have done it deliberately but There are few articles written on the site, and I will encourage you to read at least some .( A (Possibly) Helpfull approach to team selection; Team structure: Bye Planning: Rate my team 🙂 ..to name few will help you…) Just remember value is not everything. And dont worry about the thumbs down. We all get it and it is ok. Good luck

  8. DEF: Witherden, Williams, Mcgrath, Quaynor, Williamson, Collins ( Wilkie, Mckay)

MID: Macrae, Fyfe, Coniglio, Martin, Merrett, Walsh, Setterfield, Bewley (Gibbons, Atley, Wagner)

    RUCKS: Gawn, Goldie

FWD: Danger, Smith, Heeney, Kelly, Rozee, Cavarra (Burgess, Mcadam)

This is the structure I think I have settled on – only leaves 10k in the bank though.

    Thoughts?

    1. I like it but may have to drop an expensive rookie to get a bit more cash. Maybe a little light in the backline and should try get Setterfield forward depending on available rookies for round 1.

    2. Great team. You have the right premos, I like your Mid and Forward lines. Maybe you need one of Laird, Lloyd and Withfield out back but if McGrath and Witherden could make top 6 you are laughing.
The common advice is to have 75k-100k in the bank to start, so perhaps you could downgrade Kelly to maybe the Worpedo or the likes?
      Good luck

  12. Anyone thought of Hayden Crozier a point of difference this year? Thinking he could be ready to go to the next level, especially with the new rules and Marcus Adams leaving

    4

    0
    1. Yes. Averaged 97 in the back half of last year!

The main issue for me is that Williams is very likely to go 93-97 and that Roberton could be a 88-93 player. Makes it difficult to choose Crozier at 90-96 but 25k more expensive than Williams (less scoring history) and 130k more expensive than Roberton.

I have got Crozier and Williams at D3 and D4 currently. However, depending on JJK JLT/pre-season form (who I have at F4), I may downgrade Crozier to Roberton to get an upgrade on JJK to Smith/Dunkley/McLean.

  13. $32,00 in the bank.

DEF: Lloyd, Laird, Whitfield – Collins, Scrimshaw, Wilkie
    (Burgess, Hore)

MID: Cripps, Oliver, Neale, M. Crouch, Merrett – D. Clarke, Stocker, C. Lyons (Constable, Bewley, Gibbons)

    RUC: Grundy, Goldstein

FWD: Dangerfield, Smith, Heeney – Rankine, Setterfield, McAdam
    (Ballenden, Petruccelle)

Not sold on Scrimshaw, Clarke and Rankine.
Need to free up some cash so 1 will likely go out of the 3 depending on rookie selections.

    $82.5k in the bank.

    Rookies obviously subject to change.

Recently dumped Gawn for Goldy due to talk about Preuss taking ruck and Gawn going forward a bit.

Pretty much locked on D1-D4, Rucks, Danger, Heeney, Cripps, Neale, Dusty and Miles. Open to all suggestions/comments though.

Have at it team. Thanks in advance.

    1. Looks great, but allow yourself a little flexibility for decent rookies down back. I think there’ll be a few (one more at least to your current set-up), which may allow you to turn Miles into a genuine premo, or add another up FWD.
      Looking good tho
      Good luck

  15. Few observations from the Sydney practice game this morning :

    Sydney:
-Lloyd played 3 quarters, showing no signs of the hip injury . Poor disposal efficiency but would be lacking some touch considering it’s first competitive game . He shared the kick in duties with Jackson Thurlow.
-Mills played full game in the middle and was a standout, although the team was missing Parker , Kennedy and heeney .
    – Blakey looked very good up forward , kicked 3 goals and very mobile for his size.
    – Jordan Dawson was everywhere early on the wing , kicking a goal and setting up another . He quitened down in the second half .

    Giants:

    – Taranto played a full game through the middle, first quarter was quiet but really worked his way into the game. Easily the giants best on ground.
    – Williams was hardly sighted all game , played a number of different roles at times , back, forward and middle . He didn’t take any kick ins, finlayson was the go to man for kick ins .

Not sure how much notice we take of these games with both teams missing their main midfielders , giving extra time to players like mills and Taranto . I got confidence from Lloyd’s performance, the hip isn’t a concern . The one worry I had was Williams, very disappointing and didn’t take any kick ins but it’s only a friendly practice match

    1. Great another headache. Williams effects entire structure, need a lot of cash to upgrade him, or dropping him to a rookie gives awkward cash amount to spend elsewhere. Hopefully nothing to read into it.
Don’t you dare make me go rockliff Williams(I might have an obsession I think lol)

      3

      0
      1. Williams is currently my only ‘mid price’ player and i see him as possibly my 14th keeper. Hoping he looks better in JLT otherwise i might have to have a look at downgrading to B.Smith or Roberton and spend the cash elsewhere.

        0

        0
        1. Roberton was outstanding today across half back and for a full four quarters. Plenty of the pill but DE was down as we might expect as he’ll be blowing away the cobwebs. Getting closer to a lock for me.
Parker was also excellent and Hind decent. Both putting their hands up for Rd1. Wilkie disappointing and will need to lift significantly if he’s to be in the frame. Other noticeables were Kent, Clark, Coffield and Ross.
Pierce smashed Marshall in the RUC 1st half, but couldn’t stay for the last Qtr.
Am not reading much into today, but Richardson did say after the game that Parker and Hind were playing in what he considered best 22 available and he was very happy with their showing.
Steven, Steele and Gresham were notable absentees from an SC perspective (AFLX and a wedding).
Longer (hamstring) and Hanners on modified programs so didn’t partake today.

Re: GWS, apparently Williams got a corky early, so hopefully not too much of a concern.

JLT will tell us more and will be attending at least one of STK’s and will report back after.

Now I just need to find $175k to turn Wilkie into Roberton.

            1. Am still not convinced Hind will offer enough SC pts for a MID rookie. Played back pocket mainly with the odd venture up the ground, but Roberton and Savage we’re switching play brilliantly and with Webster to return during JLT, I’m still not convinced.
But as a Saints supporter, it’s a nice problem to have 🙂

              1

              0
          2. Only the last few days I have put Roberton in over Brodie Smith. I think I am set on that now. Plus it’s an extra 35k in the bank

            2

            0
          3. The footage can be watched at
            https://www.saints.com.au/video/2019-02-23/st-kilda-intraclub-match

Parker is quick and a lock for me. Ross is becoming elite. Roberton also a lock at that price. Hunter Clark is looking ominous and has improved his running times dramatically. Loved how much of the ball he was getting and will be a gun in two years. Not sure if i have the kahunas to put him on field at $293k but it is an option. Saints list depth is stronger this year. Savage and Webster will do the kicking in duties. As Savage is a bit quicker and loves to play on, I imagine he will take most of the kick ins. In relation to the rule changes they mentioned that there won’t be much change (until someone exploits it somehow) but as the kick ins will be longer people will just stand 10m further back and the ball will come out to centre wing.

  16. Thoughts on Taylor Adams as an option? Ever since Brodie Grundy made a special mention of how well he is doing this pre-season I’ve had a closer look at him and he looks like a decent option this year. Had a look at him in the scratch match against the Dees today and he looked very good.

Averaged 109.5 post the bye last season including the finals with 5 120+ scores, 10 100+ scores and a low score of 81 from 14 games. Priced at an average of 96.4 and with an average of 107.5 in 2017 is he an option this year at $523,100?

    T/U: Good call
    T/D: Bad call

    1. Froffers.

I’m just not sold on Adams this year.

From memory his best scores last year came when Treloar went down with those hamstrings.

With the addition of Beams and the emergence of De Goey / Phillips / Crisp ,maybe getting more mid time. I’m just not sure if Adams can get back to that 2017 average of 107.5 ppg. let alone improve on it.

He may prove me wrong but with so much midfield depth at the Pies this year. I’m really uncertain about picking any of them.

      Grundy is a lock though!

      8

      0
      1. Fair call about the Treloar injury, hadn’t thought about that.

Will keep an eye on JLT to see how their roles play out!

        1. It’s Adams’ DE that concerns me, oherwise he’d be my COL Mid pick, of all of them. Won’t be starting any this year.

          1

          0
    2. Unpopular opinion: I can see him averaging more than Beams.

His locked in my AFL fantasy side but will pass on him in supercoach however if you think his going to have a good year (which i do) then why not?

  17. Rookies will have to wait until JLT, so:

DEF: Whitfield, Ryan, Mills, 3 Rookies

MID: Cripps, Fyfe, Kelly, Neale, Zerrett, 3 Rookies

    RUCK: Grundy, Goldstein

FWD: Danger, Heeney, Mundy, Smith, 2 Rookies

Not sure about the backline – Mills is mainly there as a placeholder. If there are better fwd rookies than back rookies, Smith turns into a premo defender.

    1

    0
    1. I’d look to turn Mundy/Smith into a premo defender. Think there will be more points in defence with new rule changes.

    1. Really like the Newman pick, he wins a lot of the ball and could score big this year with Docherty out. We know the Blues like chipping it around also.
McLean will be a POD this year, has scored well in the past but we saw a drop off from about mid-way through last year. Be weary.
Personally I’m not a huge fan of Daniher. Yes he is very cheap, but key forwards tend to burn us a lot, plus he has a long injury history. I’d downgrade and then bank the cash and spend somewhere else.

    1. There’s a few players I’d be looking to move on, in order to try and obtain a more ‘guns & rookies’ approach.

Think there’s better options at Crisp’s price, whilst Pittard should go imo.
Is that Charlie Cameron in your midfield? If so, move him on too.
I’d look to swap out Hogan, Gresham & Lukosius as I don’t think their roles are supercoach friendly either.

      Lot to like though!

    2. Statistically only about 4 of the top 10 averaging midfielders will back it up the next year (this going back to 2006). I think picking 5 of the top 8 is just as risky as going 0 of them.

    1. Nice team! Agree with the mumford call, he now potentially misses 3-4 games rather than just the two. Throughout the year he generally gets suspended or injured too, so for me the Mumford/Fort combo is gutsy to say the least.
Personally, I’d look to downgrade one of your midfielders (maybe Treloar or Neale) and upgrade Mumford to a premo ruck.

    1. Nice structure, but I wouldn’t be starting Riewoldt and Nankervis.

Richmond play Collingwood, GWS and Melbourne in the first few rounds, which means you can expect 3 below average scores from Riewoldt as those games will likely be close- and not goalfests. Not to mention the conventional and largely vindicated wisdom of not starting key role forwards, despite Riewoldt best SC year in 2018 (93 avg). You’d be better off grabbing Wingard, Smith or Kelly, I think.

And I’d be staying away from Nank because there are far better options if you’re set against putting up the cash for Gawn/Grundy, with Goldstein being a popular alternative among SCTers. That said, I don’t see how you can not pony up for Grundy. A must have.

Hope this helps. Also, I’m guessing you’re a Tigers supporter? Perhaps why you’ve put Riewoldt and Nank in, I’m having the same problem pushing back my desire to start Darling lol!

      1

      0
      1. Nope not a tiger supporter.

My take on nank. Increased his average by 10+ points the past few years. At this stage looking like the sole ruckmen. Goldy definitely a possibility but I worry with his age and that it sounds like campbell(i think?) From reports is pushing hard to challenge for at least a 2nd ruck gig in the kanga team.

With riewoldt. I feel like with lynch in the team he wont get the number 1 big backman. And will spend lots of time floating up the wings taking lots of marks. Of course once jlt comes through and i get a proper look it will probably change haha

        0

        0
        1. You’re not wrong on either of those points, there are just better options. For 30k more you can go from Riewoldt to Heeney or Smith, both of which are better FWD options and I think a 170k investment from Nank to Grundy is worth the extra 30 points Grundy will avg each week.

    0

    0
    1. I’d try and re-work it to add in another premo by getting rid of any mid-pricers that you’re not completely sold on. I don’t rate the Smith selection and I’m not sold on Libba bouncing back, so you could potentially get rid of them and grab another premo.

  31. Hello

    Any feedback is most welcome.

I am going the Super-Cheap option for R2, I have 52,900 left over

Lloyd, Sicily, Whitfield, Rozee, Logue, Markov (Duursma/Wilkie)

Fyfe, Kelly, Neale, Bontempelli, Martin, Merrett, Walsh, Constable (Bewley/Hind/Gibbons)

    1

    0
    1. Longer’s out with a hamstring. Almost certainly won’t play Rd1.
You can afford to go one premo less in the MIDs and turn him into either Grundy or Gawn. You’d be crazy not to start one of them I think. DEF and FWD lines look good.
      Good luck!

      2

      0
    2. Interesting, TT. But a little too smokey in the ruck department for my palette.

Say Goldy and Longer both have a poor week and put up 80 each and your opponent has Gawn/Grundy who both pump out 130. 160 v 260 likely costs you your match and leads to you tumbling in the rankings. The money you’ve saved which has given an “extra” premo won’t make up for it either, because you can start 13 premos and still have Grundy and Gawn.

I have two iterations of my team right now, one with 12 top end premos guaranteed to score well + Miles and Roberton and then the other iteration without Miles and Roberton where I’ve got 13 premos. There’s a reason players like Macrae, Grundy and Cripps cost a tonne- because you can rely on them to pump out a tonne and then some each week, no worries. Sometimes you got pony up.

        1. Would be going for Grundy over Gawn.

He’s overcome that pre-season injury, the new ruck rule is conducive to his play style and there’s no other question marks over him. Whereas there’s the whole Preuss issue when it comes to selecting Gawn.

        2. Hi Mickey. Your DEF….running williams and smith together is risky. Then you have roberton in the mix at D5. Look at your FWD 3 keepers no need to trade, unless injury hits 95% confirmed top 6. Will williams or smith finish top 6?. Roberton is nicley priced but what does he need to average until the bye rounds compared against the rookies?. Then Midfeild you have both dusty and merritt can they both be top 8 at year end? Good Luck

  32. With one’s bye structure, does one want most of their premos out at the latest round or spread evenly across the 3 byes?

    1. Matt.

      Re : Bye Planning.

Lets just say I can start 14 “Keepers ”

My Ideal starting Bye structure would be 4/5/6 keepers missing each week. ( 12/13/14)

5/5/5 also works but I prefer the 4/5/6

I’m hoping to make a few upgrades by the Bye’s.
This structure gives me the best chance to choose the fallen Premo’s ,without upsetting my balance too much.

      lets just say I have 18 premo’s R12

I would Ideally like to go in with a 5/6/7 .

As you upgrade over the byes R 13/ 14 I should get a chance to replace those late Bye missing Premo’s. This will hopefully give me the best chance of an even performance.

I hope that made some sense!

      Cheers.

Father Dougal is the cash cow guru.

      1. All good Gunboat.

I would have given the exact same advice before I read both game reviews.

I now believe that Grundy is still slightly ahead of Gawn if he gets that toe right for R1, he still has plenty of time on his side.

Gawn is looking like a very solid choice also.

I may have to go in with a 13 Premo side and try to fit them both in.

    1. I would suggest having Dangerfield as a forward and have a DPP rookie in the midfield/forwards.

Midfield types classified as DEF/FWD are worth their weight in gold.

This is my first year in Supercoach but I have played Fantasy for about 10 years.

  35. First Cut and would appreciate some constructive criticism, particularly on the structure.

    By way of explanation.

I have currently ignored the expensive rookies regardless of their current and expected form. e.g. Walsh, Rozee except for Collins. Brodie Smith and Dylan Roberton are hard to ignore at their prices and breakevens.

The team below gives me 13 Premo’s, 2 mid pricers and 7 on field rookies

B: Sicily, Whitfield, Williams, Smith, Roberton, Collins (Hore & T. Watson)

  36. Plenty of flexibility there…i.e If either or both Robbo and Brodie Smith don’t fire in JLT you can add another keeper and rookie in the backline, or the forward line. If Merrett doesn’t come up for R1 you have funds to upgrade.

Bye rounds covered pretty well also

    Grundy Goldy (Fort)

Danger Smith Heeney Daniher McAdam Carrara (Parker Bines)

Can’t bring myself to start Walsh at the price but that might change. Daniher is priced at about 50ppg and is looking good.

Bank is $103.6k and is waiting for either bringing in Walsh after R2 if he fires, a corrective rookie trade, or changing Daniher to a Worpel or Fisher type.

I ran into a short fat blonde haired late 30 something fella at junior soccer training the other night…reckon he looks like that bloke in no 5 for Hawthorn who won 4 flags. He said Jones is the one to make his debut with Birchall not coming up.

    One’s I do like:
Sicily: I think he will play most season, and enjoy the 6x6x6 by playing on if he gets the lion share of kick in’s, and as far as his brain snaps go, hopefully maturity and the wrath of Clarko will fix that.
Merrett: I think he’s maturing and my hope is he’ll continue to get better.
Mundy: Had him last year, and was reasonable consistent, bit of a leap of faith, but he’s a solid performer, and will/hopefully still get some mid time and continue to score well.

      1. jeez I hadn’t heard that, hopefully clarko leaves him where he is, I realize he can play both ends, but I don’t like the idea of shifting back and forth, same with Gunston means the Hawks aren’t sure on team structure. Being a Hawks Fan I’m aware their still in a rebuild (sort of) but that’s a conversation for another time.

    1. How much coin do you have left?
Solid premiums. If anything maybe too many fully priced premiums and with a few of those premiums replaced with a more value picked premium you might be able to squeeze another premium in?

Roberton is such an unknown for mine. Saints as a whole, missing alot of footy. His history isn’t too bad however he ultimately would need to be moved on at some point. Nank for mine isn’t going to improve to that top 4 bracket – top 4 scorers are gawn, grundy, goldy and stef martin. He just can’t win enough hit outs to jump up in my books.

Really solid premium choices, especially in the midfield.

  51. Before people rip into this team, i do have a more balanced structured team i’m happy with and has barely changed for almost 2 months. With 4 premo backs and 3 forwards, 5 premo mids, set and forget rucks – gawn and grundy.

In the past i’ve been burnt by poor scoring rookies in the first half of the season on field, normally in the back and forward line. I’ve often gone 5-6 premo deep in the midfield in previous seasons and missed rookie mids.

Got a team here that has most of the rookies starting in the midfield. I’m aware having more premos starting in the DEF/FWD vs MID probably results in lower points. However the 5 DEF/FWD’s i have here starting i feel are very good chances of all being top 6 for their position.

D – Laird, Sicily, Whitfield, Hurn, Williams, Hore, Duursma, Burgess

M – Macrae, Cripps, Walsh, Gibbons, Setterfield, Bewley, Ely Smith, Hind, Drew, Constable, Atkins

    R – Gawn, Goldy, Fort

F – Danger, Heeney, Smith, Dunkley, JRoo, Cavarra, Parker, Petrucclle

    34K left

picked goldy for the time being due to hearing grundy not really flying at the moment with that toe and reports saying he appeared to be labouring a bit. For the coin you are paying that player has to be squeeky clean to start with.

Long post, anyone toyed with a similar structure? Please bare in mind this is just something ive been recently thinking about and putting it up here to get some feedback and thoughts.

    1. I hear what you’re saying CJ84, but it has to be a ‘no’ from me based on simple maths (permutations). This applies to BOTH rookie AND premo selections. To try and explain:

You have 30 spots to fill, 8-11-3-8 (or 6-8-2-6 on field)

The more you try to pick another premo or rookie on any single line, the more likely you are to get them wrong; significantly and increasingly so. That is why it makes more sense to start with say:

Premos: 3-4-1-3 as a minimum. To try and pick another DEF or FWD, you increase the risk of selecting a non-premo three-fold, trying to pick a fifth MID the likeliness of getting one wrong increases five-fold! RUCs is far less significant, but this year strategies have never been discussed so much! It is fraught with danger. The point is to try and minimise your risk to get yourself off to the best possible start.

Rookies: last year, there were 17 Rd1 rookies who made $140k or more, 10 of whom made $200k or more. Again, the more you try and pick, the more likely you are to pick the wrong one(s) (and the likely numbers of ‘missing’ are huge and increase exponentially!) but you do have corrective trades should you wish to use them to address this.

It is also worth noting that there are normally 5 or 6 mid-pricers who make that magical $140k every year. There is only one year in the last 7 that this hasn’t been the case. Trying to pick just two of these is mathematically easier than either of the above conundrums. To help try and identify who these players might be (Dylan Roberton is a prime example), there is a detailed list of similar trends/facts to look for. You’ll find this in Mid-price madness in the SCT Formguide.

Hope that makes sense and good luck!

      1. Thanks allsaints. Maybe 4 premium mids is ideal mixed with 2 likely midpricers on any line they fall on. I have read every article dropped on this site, so read that mid pricer one.

I just recall seeing Holman smash a few 100s and I couldn’t get it on field was very frustrating last year

  52. Righto, here is my team at the moment.
DEF: Lloyd, Whitfield, Andrews, Collins, Wilkie, Hore (Jones, Watson)

MID: Macrae, Cripps, Fyfe, Neale, Duncan, Walsh, Constable, Bewley (RCD, Mosquito, Gibbons)

    RUC: Grundy, Goldy (Fort)

FWD: Danger, Smith, Heeney, Blakey, Setterfield, Petruccelle (Parker, Cavarra)

    $17,700 in the bank

I usually can not justify starting a $200k+ rookie, especially a #1 pick, but Walsh is absolutely tearing up the track! My gut says take him, but the $17k left in the bank concerns me. Feedback on this dilemma and on my team as a whole would be much appreciated. Cheers in advance fellas

    1. I think your bank is OK given you have Collins, Walsh and Blakey in your starting line-up. If one or two of them don’t fire and you want to make corrective trades, you will be able to (to cheaper and better options on their respective lines), putting money back in your pocket in the process. If they all do fire, then you’re likely ahead of the pack as it means they’ll be smashing it (relative to other rookies).
      Hope that makes sense.
Money becomes a more valuable commodity as you approach the byes, as the relative $/point value drops around 10% by Rd9 and cash gives you added trade flexibility to navigate the byes.
      Good luck!

  53. Just playing around with a structure that involves D Roberton instead of D Moore and I quite like it.

    Def: R Laird, L Whitfield, Z Williams, D Roberton, X Duursma, M Hore, (C Burgess, B McKay)

    Mid: N Fyfe, J Kelly, L Neale, Z Merrett, R Sloane, A Miles, C Constable, W Drew, (B Bewley, N Hind, M Gibbons)

    Ruck: B Grundy, T Goldstein, (D Fort)

    Fwd: P Dangerfield, I Heeney, J Kennedy, T Greene, W Setterfield, B Cavarra, (S McAdam, M Parker)

    Remaining salary: 11,000

D4,F3 and F4 are providing the biggest headaches in the preseason with a large amount of players rotating through those spots.

  54. After wading through all the twitter feed after recent practice games and pre-season talk, bearing in mind JLTs are still to be played, my starting rookies at present are:

Def – Duursma and Jones H, McLennan and Hore

Mids – Bewley, Gibbons, Drew, Constable, McHenry and Carter (my floating donut as Fremantle play plenty of matches on Sunday in the fixture).

Currently leaving out Walsh even though he killed it in his match. My thinking here may change but I’m trying to maximize cash with premiums. LDU, Smith and Thomas out for similar reasons.

    Rucks – Fort

For – Blakey, Petruccelle, Parker, Burgess, Cavarra

Plenty of players to watch during JLT include:
Def -Quaynor, Logue, Rozee & Collins (probably will be a lock but looking for value), Wilkie, McInerney

Mids – Stack, Cottrell, Atkins, Valente, Sparrow, Smith E, Mosquito, Hind, Riley Collier-Dawkins, North, Stocker, Shipley, Settlefield (could be a lock), Hately, Caldwell, Butters

    Rucks – Clarke

For -Young, Stengle and McAdam (had good games recently), Moore, Rose, Rankine (performing well but expensive for a rookie).

My structure may change and Walsh and Collins will be in which means Kelly or Cogniglio will have to be Steele, or my 4 prong defence will have to become 3 premos.

Which rookies are you looking forward to seeing in the JLT? How are your rookies shaping at the moment? Are you looking for value or are you prepared to pay top dollar and how many close to 200k will be in your team?

    1. Great stuff Mick. At the mo Walsh and Collins are the only expensive ones I’m considering based on JLT. Currently have Duursma in but nobody more expensive than him at the mo’.

  55. AS…….Just out of curiosity, do we have details on who were our starting top 5 (last year) in each position (price/points ave.) and after 5 rounds who were our top 5 (points ave./CURRENT PRICE)????………..This is to help decide whether l should take 1st and 4th prems. or 2nd and 3rd ranked prems or something similar, or do I just work it on who’s playing who, and where it’s played and compare it to last year when they met, for the first 5 rounds analysis???? I’m getting so confused …….

    1. I like the PODs (but you may have 1/2 too many). I don’t tend to like premium-priced rookies. If they smash it in JLT then by all means consider, but you can likely expect a 10-20% drop in output when it comes to the real deal, so don’t be fooled by inflated SC numbers. Level of intensity is nothing compared to the real deal, so I’d look at roles and TOG, more than SC scores as we get ready for Rd1.
Exciting times … the wait is nearly over

        1. The best scenario would be if he misses the first couple of games so that you can get a proper look at him before buying in.
If he starts Rd1 it’ll be a no from me.

          1. Even if he starts rnd 1, he’s only hit the th ton in 3 of his last 20 games. No doubt he has the tallent but until he shows a bit of consistency I woud stay away

            1
            1. Thats cherry picking research. He averaged 96 in 2017, and was injury affected last year. Good option to gain $ while scoring decently early for a quick trade to whatever fwd prems present

      1. Thanks All Saints. I looked at Dusty vs Parker over the last few seasons and there isn’t a lot of difference. Both have high ceilings but I think Parker will get more mid time at the Swans this year, he and JPK really have to show the way, and you’re right, he seems to be flying under the radar so Shhhh!

    1. Structure looks great. Premo picks are a matter of preference. I’d go Cogs simply because he has had a full pre-season.
Your bank worries me given you have no premo rookies. It makes it nigh on impossible for you to ‘correct’ to get a Walsh and/or Collins type IN, should they live up to the hype!

      2

      0
      1. Short of Tim Kelly MkII, I would not use a trade to bring in an expensive cow. They are dodgy to start with. Even Kelly I’m not sure I would trade for, unless I had someone hurt long term.

That does not mean you are wrong about lack of bank though. It is a risk, but not a horrible one.

        3

        0
    2. IMO you’re spending way too much down back, you could get the same output for 400k less. Smith and Roberton should be considered maybe even collins as he’ll see plenty of the footy in the suns backline. Saving 400k down back will enable you to turn one of your three onfield mid rookies into a premium

      0

      0
    3. Harris Andrews is almost the fastest player in AFL and also a booming kick. If he takes kick-ins and plays on he’ll be kicking the ball to the wing if not half forward line (Gabba is Short) if that happens witherden will struggle to match his numbers from last year.
      Just a thought.

    1. Hate to say it, but think Jimmy Webster may end up being the key benefactor, given it has the least impact on desired structure. The JLT will tell us more.

It can only help Hind tho’. Not necessarily good for the Saints but great for SC.
