You’ve been tinkering for a few weeks now. Surely it can’t get any better than this?

    1. I like the team, but I’m thinking 4 premo mids will cost you points early. Depends heavily on availability of good mid rookies, which I guess we’ll all get a better feel for over the next few weeks.

      1. Thanks Tommy,

The easiest way to get an extra midfield premo is to drop Whitfield.

IDK I’ll have a play around, maybe Houston stinks it up in the JLT and I upgrade him to a midfielder.

        1. Wouldn’t be dropping Whitfield under any circumstances, GP.

Also, did you manage to get into my league? If not, let me know and I’ll make room.

              1. Not sure whether you saw Zac’s response to my question on his article but he recommended reading this supercoach guy on twitter:
                @laughingracoon

The twitter guy has some thought provoking ideas that go against the mainstream thought about supercoach.

          1. Or put him as a midfielder to keep the “5 premo midfielders” group happy, and use a dpp fwd/mid like cockatoo to put him where you like 🙂

            1. I wonder if people remember the cannon has to come back in. Houston might get his midfield time, and McKenzie got 110 before he was injured in his first game.

Also Jack Watts will probably come back into that lineup.

Houston SHOULD get mid time, just based on those two returns

              5

              1
      2. In the end I think it’s just total premos that matters, not where they start.

After all, points are all set at the same $/pt for ALL premos not coming back from injury discounts

    1. Good stuff, Jez.

Not so sure about Steven and Smith anymore. Injury issue for Steven now and Smith might struggle getting midfield minutes this season apparently.

      1. Thanks Gunboat I know what you
        mean there’s question marks on
Steven with the calf injury and
and Smith will he get midfield time
I might have to have a rethink .
There’s plenty of great teams on
        SCT to learn from. Cheers

  3. Gawn out for 5 weeks with moderate knee strain has forced draft 8c as follows

    DEF: J Sicily, S Docherty, T Doedee, D Roberton, S Hill, H Young (J McLennan, T Rivers)

    MID: J Macrae, J Kelly, P Cripps, J Dunkley, Z Merrett, M Rowell, B Starcevich, M Pickett (N McHenry, D Robertson, M Hibberd)

    RUC: B Grundy, S Lycett (C Comben)

    FOR: L Whitfield, D Martin, J Dawson, D Smith, I Rankine, N Cockatoo (M King, J Brander)

    $71,700 in the bank.

I think Lycett could actually go close to Grundy / Gawn like figures this year.

Going heavy on mid pricers in the back and forward lines but I’m ok with this as I’m viewing them primarily a stepping stones with safe points and cash gen rather than breakout keeper candidates.

Final mid make up will be dependent on available rookies, but I’m looking for value as well as security so a Zerrett or Clarry type will probably get a spot in my team. Possibly on the Jack Steele train again this year after he teased me last year.

Let me know your thoughts guys.

    4

    3
    1. Oliver has a lot more upside than Zerrett, so he’s the better starting selection.
I started with both the last two seasons, and Zerrett has definitely been underwhelming.

      12

      0
      1. Just with Gawn’s injury and taggers the first 2 rounds, not sold on Oliver. Zerrett could become a Dangerfield or Fyfe uber premo, just gotta work out how best to allocate the remaining bank. I do think Zerrett has potential to reach the next level this year though.

        2

  4. DEF: J Sicily, S Docherty, T Doedee, S Hill, B Starcevich, T Williamson (J McLennan, W Goulds)

    MID: J Macrae, L Neale, N Fyfe, J Kelly, P Cripps, P Dangerfield, S Simpson, M Pickett (J Bell, N McHenry, J Bytel)

RUC: B Grundy, M Gawn (S Draper) Preuss in for Gawn if he’s not right for rd 1 with his knee injury

    FOR: L Whitfield, D Martin, A Bones, J Branded, E Smith, I Rankine (D Cameron, M King)

    1. I like that you’ve gone 6 deep in the mids, thinking about that structure too. I’m a little worried about how to deal with that over the bye rounds though and if there’s a couple of surprise standout mids it only leaves you room for 2 upgrades. Have you thought about any of the guys around the $550-$600k mark for your M6 at all? Not a suggestion necessarily, just curious…

      4

      0
      1. The issue is Tommy that I can’t see any of the 550-600 blokes becoming top 8 mids, aside from maybe Oliver, and even then I think he will start slow with WCE and GWS first up (as well as possibly no Gawn to start the season). I get what you’re saying with only having 2 upgrades but I’m not too fussed about that, usually the top mids never drop below 550 during the season so its hard to bring them in anyway, usually requiring 2 down 1 up. Mid scoring power should keep my ranking up in the early part of the season and I should hopefully be able to avoid starting a ‘premo’ def or fwd that stinks it up and can instead bring them in as the top 6 in each line becomes clearer.

        2

        2
        1. re: the byes I only have 2 premo mids missing each week with the setup I have, and in rds 13 and 14 I might be able to upgrade to reduce that

          2

          0
        2. “Mid scoring power should keep my ranking up in the early part of the season”. I could just as easily say your forward line scoring power will hold you back.
Look, it doesn’t matter which line you spend the money on as the players are priced on the scoring ability. The mids score more but are more expensive. The exceptions are the heavily discounted players who carry more risk and the rooks who are priced based on their draft position. Mid rooks tend to be the better rooks which would go against the concept of a 6 deep primo midfield.

          1

          1
          1. Each year is different and I wouldn’t generalise on rookie scoring power across positions. Obviously I will watch PS with a keen eye before I lock in my cash cows (I think AS made a good case for this years FWD rookies I his comment on the FWD thread today).

And I don’t quite buy your argument re: scoring ability and it not mattering which line you fill up with premos. It comes down to picking the right keepers, and I think it is much clearer who the top few will be in the midfield than the forward line. The likelihood of Heeney or Walters pumping out a 70 is nuch higher than, say, Josh Kelly.

Obviously horses for courses and this will be the first time I start 6 deep in the midfield, but I just feel it is the right way to navigate the limited FWD premo options this year.

            3

            1
            1. I 100% agree with the statement that Walters or Heeney are more likely to pump out a 70 than J Kelly, but that’s why J Kelly is 100K more expensive. You have to pay for that. He is a big injury risk but that is for a completely different discussion.

The forward rooks have been historically poor scorers and I for one will be minimizing the number I have on the field.

              0

              0
          2. That’s simply not true David, I’m sorry.

There were only six MID rookies worth picking in SC last year for cash generation. If you picked only five premos and no Libba or other midpricers and/or no loophole on your MID bench, then you very likely ended up with at least one spud! And last year was possibly the strongest draft in years. While we may be blessed with say Pickett and Hinberd (if fit) this year, I am struggling to see where your other four are going to come from at this stage.

The previous year was even worse. Barring Tim Kelly, Holman and Banfield, the rest were poor.

In both the two previous years there was more depth on BOTH the DEF and FWD lines and by some margin. Yes the top two MIDs offer better onfield pts, but after that you are beginning to scrape the barrel.

The “depth of MID rookies” and “lack of FWD rookies” are both fallacies. That’s a FACT.

            You can add to that:
1 There also tends to be a comparative abundance of underpriced players on the DEF and FWD lines, and
2 The Top6 on both these lines are rarely consistent, with an average of approx. 3 holding their status yr-on-yr.

In conclusion then and especially this year with a weaker draft than last year, it would be a lot less risky and more profitable (onfield points and cash made) to go six deep in your MIDs at the opportunity cost of DEF and FWD premo numbers. The lines on which there are consistently more, better and cheaper options.

            2

            0
    2. Yep. Nice, Barbs. Got that same structure I’ve been harping on about for a month, issue now is premo selection.

      7

      3
  5. Just want to put something out there
Could Selwood be a b crouch option of this year
And push back up to 95-100 average might be a good stepping stone

    2

    10
    1. I don’t see it. He’s going on 32, bruised and battered body and I think his midfield time and SC average will continue to decrease. He’s a legend, but realistically there’s young guys coming through who will only take more mid time off him.

      4

      2
      1. Same so applies for Danger. I think by late 2021 Danger will be more midfielder than forward. His scores have been going downhill since 2016.

I can see Ablett retiring and Danger taking that role, or maybe both in the forwards, with Ablett on reduced salary in 2021

        3

        2
    2. Ayden Mate, our great champion age and brutal physical battles has finally caught up with him. Last year he had about 9 scores under 80. Few around 60 too. He is still able to post 2 or so monster scores, but for the coveted Mid position, in my opinion not SC relevant anymore.

      6

      0
      1. He was also unfit, and I suspect Geelong have been cheating their concussion tests too.

He does look cheap, and I toyed with him, but too much risk for not enough reward for SuperCoach.

        0

        5
    3. I think he’s got 100 ppg in him, maybe 105.
Which is not enough points lost or enough $$$ made to justify a trade.

That smells like list blocker to me.

If he was your M8 at the end of the year you wouldn’t be crying.

If he was your M4, either you lucked out and he’s had a blinder of a year…. Or you’re ranked about 70,000 and your other trades have been horrible.

  6. $48.6k remaining.

    DEF:
Daniel, Sicily, Docherty, Roberton, Stacevich, Cottrell (McLennan, Gould)

    MID:
Macrae, Neale, Cripps, Dunkley, Dangerfield, Cockatoo, Valente, Pickett (McHenry, Bytel, Hibberd)

    RUC:
    GG.com

    FWD:
Whitfield, Dusty, Steven, Hill, Rankine, Cavarra (D. Cameron, King)

I need to pick two out of Cripps, Danger and Oliver, and keep switching between them. The only thing putting me off Oliver is the tags in the first two rounds.

    4

    0
    1. Morning, bAps.

Oliver an issue for me as well. He burnt me last year when I chose him over Neale, now something is telling me he’s gonna pop off this year, but there’s Hutchings and De Boer in rounds 1 and 2. Think I’ll grab him after the byes.

Also, did you get around to joining my league? If not, I’ll make some room for you.

      0

      4
      1. Morning GB, thanks for the input on Oliver. That’s my thinking too, pick him up around the byes. Similar to Zerrett, Oliver can chuck up a stinker every now and again and can always be found for sub-$550k at some point.

I’m not sure if I have yet, but if you’ve got a league code, I’d love to join!

        1

        3
      2. I’m the same. Looking at Zach Merrett this year at around the same price point. He’s shown he can go at a 120 average for 5-7 game stretches and has a decent ceiling. Good for my bye structure too. I think he could easily increase his average to 115 plus this year.

        0

        4
        1. If your looking for value to save cash elsewhere it has to be Oliver. Otherwise cripps or danger, if it’s 50/50 use the byes/popularity.

          0

          0
  7. With a lack of trust in FWD mid-pricers and confusion over which DEF premos to start, I’ve fallen back on my 6 premo MID structure that I’ve been pushing for a while:

DEF: Lloyd, DBJ, Doeede, Young, Starcevich & Williamson [Bianco, Gould]

MID: Macrae, Neale, J. Kelly, Cripps, Dunkley, T. Kelly, Rowell & Pickett [Robertson, Maginness, loophole]

    RUC: Grundy & Gawn [Meek]

FWD: Whitfield, Walters, Hill, Rankine, Cavarra & Worral [Smith, Cameron]

Have opted for the all the top shelf rookies at this stage, hopefully a few of them don’t pan out and I can save some coin and switch J. Kelly to Fyfe. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy with this structure, seen a Barbs and AS running it recently as well.

    Thoughts?

    7

    7
    1. Hi GD, I love the DBJ Pick. Houston going Mid, he will have plenty of the pill.
Not so much the Williamson Pick.
Williamson was always rated by the AFL and the blues but always had some mystery illness. I had him last year and wasted my trade. I will stear clear. Forget the hype
For the Mid structure as FD always said, the Cow availability will determine the strucure, so I hope you are not hell bend in keeping the Mids to 6. Most fat cows are Mids.

      3

      3
      1. Hey, Jeannot.

BlueBalls was big on Williamson the other day so I jumped on for now, kinda hoping it doesn’t pan out so I can pocket the 30k though lol. Duly noted.

Yeah, I’m bullish on DBJ rn. Put up some of his best scores when Houston was in the middle. Just need him to retain the HB receiver role. Word is Westhoff will play down back this year- will complicate things. We’ll see…

        How’s your team coming along?

        3

        3
        1. Gawn is putting a spanner in the works for me. Last year he had about 227 more than Goldstein who was the next ruck…If he misses 2 games, that’s game over. I can have another VC.
Still happy with GnR but tinkering with the forwards line which will affect savings in Def . Will post soon.

          5

          0
            1. Gawn is in . The noise doesn’t worry me too much except if he is going to miss 2 or more games . The issue is do you save a trade or money ? And that means no risky J.Kelly or Fyfe or Whitfield?.

              2

              0
      2. Hey Jeannot

You say ‘most fat cows are MIDs’, but that’s simply not true as I posted above in response to David C. Sorry, but …

There were only SIX MID rookies worth starting in SC last year for cash generation. If you picked only five premos and no Libba or other midpricers and/or no loophole on your MID bench, then you very likely ended up with at least one spud! And last year was possibly the strongest draft in years. While we may be blessed with say Rowell, Pickett and Hibberd (if fit) this year, I am struggling to see where your other three are going to come from at this stage. I’m talking decent cows.

2018 was even worse. Barring Tim Kelly, Holman and Banfield, the rest were poor.

In both these two previous years there was more depth on BOTH the DEF and FWD lines and by some margin. Yes the top two MIDs offer better onfield pts, but after that you are beginning to scrape the barrel.

The “depth of MID rookies” and “lack of FWD rookies” are both fallacies. That’s a simply a statement of FACT. The numbers prove it.

        You can add to that:
        1. There also tends to be a comparative abundance of underpriced players on the DEF and FWD lines, and
        2. The Top6 on both these lines are rarely consistent, with an average of approx. 3 holding their status yr-on-yr. (last 6 years – and yes of course change in positional status has a significant role to play here).

The point is, it does lead to uncertainty regarding who the top6 will be, and with uncertainty comes risk!

Just sayin’

Apologies, I have ranted on a bit, but the point I wanted to make is that “there are more MID cows than on other lines” actually couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, recent history suggests it is the very opposite of the truth!

        Good luck 😉

        1

        0
    2. That does seem to take advantage of the cheap ,better picks around the 180-280 mark and avoid all the question marks in the 320-400 mark.

I’ve been struggling with the same problem and I’m tossing up between two structures, one is pure guns and rookies and you end up with three rookies on ground in def, mid and the forward line. It’s very traditional but avoids a lot of mid-price madness.

My concern with the six premo’s in the mid is if there’s some gun midfield rookies that are firing you can’t put them on field.

I started with LIbba at m6 last year and Walsh at M7 and ended up getting rid of a midfield premo when he didn’t fire to start and I liked that balance better for juggling rookies.

Every year is different though, I’m avoiding midpricers as much as possible though.

      1

      0
      1. Yeah. My line of thinking as well, GP.

Those who start more midpricers (less rookies) will probably have stronger starts but I think teams with minimum risk and maximum topshelf premos will come out better long term.

        2

        5
      2. Back in the 20 trades per season days I had a 300k policy. I didn’t spend more than 300k on a player unless I was certain they were keepers. Kind of backs up your 180-280 mark and 320-420.
Since the game changed to 30 trades, I do believe there is a spot for the 300+ types you just need to keep a spare trade for them. After all, they are cheap for a reason (coming back from injury, getting old, not proven yet etc)

Libba and Smith were fantastic picks last season if you traded them at the right time.

I kind of agree with Allsaints when he said you only pick players for points or money….but the guys that do both are very handy.

        5

        0
    3. GD,
Love the extra mid. I like that structure and it is one I am employing atm. You are relying on the three back rookies starting (not sure Williamson will?) Feel you need either Cockatoo or Smith in your forward line as Cavarra or Worrell may not start.

      3

      0
      1. Rookies are placeholders for the most part and contingent on a R1 start, Mick.

Not sold on a Smith just yet, but Cockatoo will find his way in there.

        2

        3
  8. So with the possibility of Gawn missing rnd 1 at leased. Is Jacobs the stand out option now? He only needs to compete with whomever is everyone else’s second ruck…
If Gawn is back rnd 2 probably a bad choice, but if he’s missing 3-4 weeks not to bad. I think most other rucks would be selected as keepers for similar output but a lot more expensive.
    Need a thread for this?

    8

    1
    1. Definitely need a new thread for this one.
Do we go with a budget option (i.e. Jacobs, NicNat) or pick the next best ruck (Goldy, ROB, Marshall)?
As bad as it is for Gawn, the thought of him missing round 1 or more makes supercoach a lot more interesting.

      6

      0
      1. I don’t see the point in starting anyone over about 350k, because you’re going to want to get Gawn in once he is back and you will only be using the other bloke as a stepping stone who can hopefully make 100+k. The only bloke I would consider as a keeper, and therefore would bank on him matching Gawn for the season, would be Lycett because of his huge ceiling and no Ryder. But it would be a risky pick.

Obviously it sucks for big Gawny, but his injury does make things interesting. Definitely thread-worthy as bAps and TOF say

        3

        1
        1. although if Gawn is only out for the first few rounds, you could scope out a premo ruck with an easy month who might still shoot up 100k. Lycett has Witts, Goldy, Natainui and Grundy in his first 5 so I’d pass on that

          4

          0
      2. The problem i see is when Gawn is back you can’t commit to giving up 20 points per game all season and expect to win it.

The only real keeper option is probably Goldstein.

Everyone else you are possibly giving up closer to 30 points per game, unless you believe Marshall can continue to improve AND add additional points despite the addition of Paddy Ryder, which I cannot see happening.

My take is go cheap and take a likely cheaper Gawny after he’s regained match fitness.

The big drama though is finding that much cash midseason is insanely difficult without cutting a premo.

        1

        0
        1. Well your not giving up 30 points per game really are you? You make it up on another line with an upgrade from the cash you get from downgrading Gawn. I really don’t understand this argument.

          1

          1
          1. I get your point, but once you fully upgrade your team – ideally by the end of the byes – then you do start giving up those points. I guess it’s a bit of both.

            3

            0
    2. Morning, TOF.

If Gawn is out of commission for the first few rounds, I’d start Nic Nat. Been increasing his minutes over the off season, according to the membership emails I’ve been getting. He also benefits immediately from Gawn’s absence with the Eagles playing the Dees in R1; Nic Nat and his yeti side-kick Hickey would slap up Preuss.

Hopefully it doesn’t come to that, Gawn should be right for R1.

Let’s say he’s set to just miss R1, I’ll stick with him anyway. Even it means benching him for R1- planning on starting a playing R3 anyway.

      2

      7
      1. Morning to you too GD. Yep, missing round 1, I’ll be keeping him, hope Cameron plays. Otherwise going Goldstein. But those free Jacobs dollars…

  9. Given Gawn might miss Rd1 or more, I’ve just made up this team, and actually quite like it:

    DEF:

    1. Forget Stevens not fit. Move Smith to F3.

Grundy Marshall Sauce…..no no no no no. Loose either Marshall or sauce replace with loophole Coomben. Take that money and upgrade Hunter.

Too deep in the Def line, loose one and use the money for a good M3.

Move hill to F4 and bring Cameron into FWD line.

      Good Luck.

Rookies at base price are irrelevant at this stage.

    1. Definitely went cheap down back but that midfield and forward line is just brutal.

      Looks good.

The Gawn injury is one to ponder. Makes things more interesting.

      2

      2
      1. Rookies arent irrelevant and if you want the good ones you will have to change your premium set up, meaning this team reveal is not so good.

  12. With the possibility of Gawn not playing early games I’m interested in starting with Goldy. He averaged 125 in the last 10 games of 2019 and found his mojo again. This allows me to strengthen the mids.
My team has plenty of risk with a few players coming back from LTI but a Hannebery can easily be substituted with someone like A. Brayshaw who is around his price range if he gets injured.

DEF: Sicily, Docherty, Doeede, Roberton, Young, Starcevich [Worrell, Gould]

MID: Fyfe, J. Kelly, Cripps, Dunkley, Danger, Hanners, Rowell & Pickett [McHenry, Hutchieson, Rivers]

    RUC: Grundy & Goldy [Comben]

FWD: Whitfield, Martin, Smith, Hill, Cockatoo, Rankine [King, Cameron]

    Any thoughts?

  13. Mick

I like the Goldy pick IF Gawn is missing.

I’m just not really sold on your structure.
I only count 11 solid keepers.

Personally I would look at Hanners down to a Rookie, and then use the cash to upgrade Smith and either Doedee or Roberton.

This would give you a more traditional G&R team, and will save you trades later in the year.

    Just my 2c anyway.

    4

    5
    1. Roberton has a medical problem which SHOULD be fixed from the combination of a electro-mechanical fix (defibrillator) and medicine, along with knowledge of his condition and constant medical monitoring.

These represent major changes since his disturbing collapse.

It should be easy enough for their medical team to monitor that in the preseason and KNOW whether he is good to play or not. Who knows, he might be bluetooth enabled so they can monitor his heart rate real time.

IMHO that represents a far lesser risk than say Docherty or Mitchell who have effectively just a rehabbed but still weak area, or the questionable recovery of headknock victims say Petracca, or even Luke Parker or Joel Selwood who both have not reached the same heights since.

      6

  14. Post Gawn redraft allows Lachie Whitfield in with $100 to spare:

Caps represent my premos, with two maybe who I am still pretty keen to run with if they make it through Marsh alright, or else it’s a one premo one rookie swap.

Backs: WILLIAMS DOCHERTY Doedee RoBeRtOn Young Williamson (Starcevich Gould)

Mids: MACRAE FYFE CRIPPS DANGERFIELD OLIVER Rowell Cockatoo Pickett (McHenry Valente Robertson)

    Rucks: GRUNDY Jacobs (Cameron)

Forwards: WHITFIELD MARTIN HEENEY StEvEn Hill Frampton (Rankine King)

    Thoughts?

    3

    3
    1. Still not sure on Jacobs versus Patton versus probable spud Naismith.

Jacobs works well for the byes and an upgrade at his bye so long as you can afford it. His long term average tends to lurk in the high 80’s, with only a couple of years much better than that, so at his age you can’t expect too much better.

But GWS has a good early run, and his hitouts to advantage should jump with the GWS midfield.

Patton if fit can be transferred to the forward line and provide year round ruck cover. With very questionable forward options a fit Patton in a Hawthorn lineup improved by Mitchell’s return is hardly the worst option.

Naismith, who claims he is finally fit, is a 206 cm #1 Ruckman who should be perfectly capable of high 90’s averages for a bargain price, but at this stage he’s never shown it at senior level. However, he’s done little but patch together a few games of second string Ruckman for 60 – 80 points per game, which is kind of where Gawn was about 4 or 5 years ago.

At this point my money is on Jacobs, but that may change based on preseason form.

      2

      3
    2. Swing Cockatoo forward for Steven then upgrade doedee to a keeper.

Bring another rookie into the Mids.

Thinking i may have to downgrade Steven or Smith to a rookie then upgrade Cogs/Yeo. As well as look to offload Gawn pending injury status at round 1.

    1. Lots more drafts to come yet. It looks ok as it is, but at this point of the season we all have those sorts of questions.

All the midpricers and Rookies can only ever be sorted at the last minute.

The most important thing is to have a plan on what to do if… it saves making wrong moves before Round 1. You seem to have a plan.

Last year I panicked and made all of the wrong moves.

  16. What about this team if Gawn misses Just R1 ?

Laird Sicily Doc Hill Young Gould
    Mclennan Briggs

    Macrae Neale Cripps Dunkley Treloar
    Rowel Picket Bytel
    Rivers Williams Budarick

    Grundy Ryder Gawn

Whit J Martin Townsend Cockatoo Rankin King
    Worrell Comben

The plan would be to keep either ..

J Martin or Ryder ( ruck cover would be nice) then upgrade the other one to Dusty ASAP.

Anyone think Ryder could average 90+ if he spits enough time in the ruck ?

    2

    9
    1. I’d be wary of Ryder tbh.

Look at Hawthorn. Apparently Big Boy is now a defender so you can consider Ceglar their #1 ruck.

Or Jacobs now he is at GWS..

Or Naismith now he is apparently fit.

Or Phillips now he’s at Essendon.

      3

      0
    2. Freo Tragic. Ryder and 22 games don’t mix. Would he average 90? I believe 95-100. But the durability and TOG are the issue and on fwd merit alone I wouldn’t have him. However I will have him ahead of Martin.
What is your long term game plan ?

      3

      1. Jeannot

Just putting a few ideas out there at the mo.
I think its fun to explore the What if’s ?
It would be great to see a poll for alternative Rucks to the GG.com
We could also add a thread on “Where you spent the $$” you save if you go a cheapie.( Sauce, Darcy,) or do you go a Goldie / Lycett type ?

I think its great to have plans A B C on all lines.

If ( god forbid ) anything happens to Doc, who’s next in line for his spot. Do you have the cash to up grade him ?
Will this throw out your whole structure ?
Better to ask these questions now ,than in the mad scramble of lock out !

Happy planning and best of luck in 2020!

    3. Hi FREO I think It will be difficult to move Marshall. HUGE increase last year and I am still pissed off I missed him last year. Room to Improve.?. If Gawn does start Round 1 he is one to consider R2.

Ryder I think more 80+ range looking over his past 5 years. I think Ryder plays High Forward and combined with king will be a handful for defensive lines.

Apparently Naismith is finally injury free?.. cheap option should make little bit of cash.?

      Good Luck.

    Def:
The last few years only 2 players keep top 6 position. I am punting on Sicily and Llyod and will be happy if they give me the same return as last year. Rather spend my money somewhere else.
Sicily seems to control his temper and I like the player he has become.
I am punting on Doedee(return from injury) and Roberton( known illness and known treatment) Great if any end up D6 otherwise a stepping stone.

    Mid:
    Guns, no comments;
B.Scott to allow me an early M6 upgradewithout breaking the bank.

    Ruck:
G+G . Will wait for Gawn and go English if Gawn is set to miss more than 2 games.
Draper bcoz I want a scoring Ruck and its a Bomber thing.

    FWD:
Whitfield is a gun and will come to bite me. But He is expensive and because GWS had so many Mids missing last year, the share of points is abnormal and I am not paying top price when I have question marks. I will have him as my first FWD upgrade target if he doesnt break down before that. D.Smith will come in too if he plays Mid in March series.
For the rest I will kept boring and conservative based on gut feel and history.
Heeney has a hand injury but that wont stop him training at the gym.
T.Mac and T Lynch are so cheap, I am willing to back them. I believe Greenwood will have a break out year in GCS but he is awkwardly priced and that will stuff my structure.
Martin F1 bcoz he is Dusty. last year is an one off. (A mate you knows him said he was happy and Zen like the Martin of old). I like happy players.

Thats it folks, Tear it apart. Any feedback appreciated.

    1. Well that’s not a cookie cutter side 😛

I’ve toyed with the idea of not taking Whitfield as a negative-pod but currently he is in my side.

I don’t super like starting 4 round 13 bye guys in forward line, that’s going to be hard to manage if they’re keepers.
The round 13 bye is a pain in the butt

what’s the thoughts on Draper? he is a loophole until he gets fit?

      2

      1
      1. Gra Pol, Draper is Draper. If he is fit during the R13 bye I will be happy. Otherwise yes he is my loophole. For the FwDs, it’s a number game. I want 18 players where ever they are. The hope is to start upgrade early so I ll have more players come the byes

        2

        0
    2. I would consider Roberton more likely to be a premo than Tom McDonald.

Still, it’s not a bad side.

      1

      1
      1. HH, TMac is the type of fwd I like. And This year Melbourne will lift . They’ve got to. For his price, I don’t mind having him. And if he flops it is easier to upgrade to who ever is tearing it. If he doesn’t, nice POD as he has very low ownership .

        4

        3
    3. I’d consider TMac if Stevens ends up being a no. He certainly has upside potential and has crossed the 500k mark before.

But don’t expect consistency out of him.

My bias aside, he’s never missed a game, increased his average by +10.2 in his second year and should land at the Eagles wanting to return the faith.

A solid pick at M5 imo.

The suns just don’t score a lot of supercoach points I’m afraid 🙁

Allsaints last your pointed out he plays the Lloyd role in their defence. I hope with Collins being fit again he can intercept and give it off to Weller but yeah… the suns suck.

I like really the Tich pick. He is overpriced but you know what you are getting and of late he was reported to tear it in training . Well done

      1. Concur with all the above.

On Titch, it’s just a matter of minutes. Will be hard to infer from the Marsh Series as well. Starting him is always going to be a risk- one I might take…

  25. Risk v reward. Plenty of risk here and mouthwatering mids makes me salivate at the expense of weaker defs and fwds.

If Gawn doesn’t get up for the start of the season Goldy is good back up. Doedee and Roberton, if fit, represent too good value to pass up. 11-12 keepers may not be enough?? Gawn can be slotted in for plans B, C, D but Rowell would have to go or lose a premo mid and strengthen fwds or backs.

A lot would have to go right with no injuries to Hill, Doedee, Roberton, etc. Have I got the kahunas to go for it? Time will tell. The tangled web continues to weave.

    1. Hey, F&L.

Wouldn’t omit Gawn in any drafts yet. Most likely good for R1 and if he’s not it’s going to be much easier to re-appropriate the money you’ve saved, rather than having for throw off your whole structure for find 700k.

That aside, your structure is solid and I like how you’ve also backed Lloyd and Walters in- but I think you need to revisit your M4/5 picks.

Of your starting midfield premos you only really want to roll the dice on 1 pick at most. Not to say Taranto and Merrett aren’t good scorers with greater potential in 2020, but they’re not on the level of Macrae, Dunkley, Cripps, Fyfe, etc. Do yourself a favour and pick MID premos that you’d entrust with the VC/C.

For a team that isn’t starting Gawn, you could afford to start 6 top shelf MID picks actually.

      Best of luck.

      2. Thanks for the input GD- much appreciated.
I will evaluate the team during pre-season and make any adjustments accordingly.
It is a large risk to not start with Grawndy and I understand that, I am tipping a change of the guard for top rucks in Lycett/Witts stepping up significantly but yet again it is a huuuge ask to see them at Gawn and Grundys level.

    2. The Sinclair pick is a huge risk…:but I’m a fan. He’s proven he can hold his own. My concern is that the rule will be swung between Sinclair, Reid and Aliir. Not a great deal of security for early rounds. And you’ve got Naismith coming back sooner rather than later. Definitely worth keeping an eye on Sydney’s setup during the marsh series.

    3. Hi First &Last. I agree with Gunboat Diplomacy. You saved money on Gawn, bring in an Uber Mid to match the scoring.
My other advice is, bring in Grundy. Don’t argue , don’t try to be smart. The savings won’t help you. Not having him will hurt you. But then I could be wrong

    4. for a side without grundy or gawn it looks very weak I cannot see where you’ve spent the extra $$$ strengthening your side enough to justify missing out on the two big men who will finish top 3 in the rucks, save you trades and give you a VC/C loophole each week…

  29. Hey all, long time follower but hardly post. Finished top 100 last season, looking to go a few better this time around;

    DEFENCE:

    (Worell, Bianco)

    MIDFIELD:
    J. Macrae, N. Fyfe, P. Cripps, J. Dunkley, C. Oliver, M. Rowell, N. McHenry,

Thoughts? Really annoyed I cant fit in Danger, however my premo mids I wont even consider replacing at this stage. Would love to get Houston in at some point, depending on how Sicily travels. Feel as though he will go better this season with the new additions at the hawks. Going steven over devon smith, will have to wait and see how they go over pre season.

    Feedback much appreciated.

    3. Gidday Olie, like it a lot, assume RUCKS are G+G. Agree with Wrighty about Stevens.
Stevens is currently nursing a calf strain & read an article last week where Geelong said he will be playing mainly FWD in the first part of the season due to fitness issues & hopefully move to the MID when ready. Both our teams are very similar and considering you finished top 100 2019 makes me think I am on the right track. Good luck.

  32. Anyone changing their plans re Gawn if he doesn’t play r1 ?? Even if he does, is it worth benching him for a Cameron or Patton ?

    1. Good question, Wighty.

If it’s just R1, I’ll probably still start him. Been planning on starting a player R3 anyway.

    2. Gidday Wighty , depends on if your playing to win league games or best ranking.
May need to be corrected on this but I think SC league games dont start to rd3.
Reported today that Gawn started running so by rd3 should be back to full fitness.
From what I have read from previous threads you are a League player[I think] Stick with him. Reminds me of Dangerfield last year.

Also, are there any leagues with open spots in them I could join?

    1. Looks great Raoul. Only thing I’d say is watch DSmith in the Marsh series for role. If he’s in the guts, lock him in. But I see a lot of Bombers fans on twitter reckon he’ll be playing Fwd = yuk.

This is my side without Gawn I’m not confident in starting a big man with a medical strain whose going to miss several weeks of the preseason that doesn’t sit well with me at all..

I’m pretty happy overall with my side maybe 1 light down back but can easily downgrade heeney and go up to a premo if I need.. I’m bit unsure about batting 6 deep in the mids it means maximum points early but the only issue I find with this is you really wanna nail them Uber’s as you really only have two spots to upgrade there later instead of three!

Would love some feedback from everyone on what I could potentially change structure wise . Cheers

      1. Fair point you have TOF but I’ll back him in too stay fit it’s all about taking a gamble sometimes in this game.. I do have Cameron in my forward line I expect him too play or I will monitor a ceglar in the marsh but I don’t think Jacobs will get injured.

  39. Ive sat, read and researched for the last month, and have now created my first pre JLT team.

DEF: Houston, Docherty, Doedee, S. Hill, Starcevich, McLennan (Rivers, Gould)
MID: Macrae, Kelly, Cripps, Dunkley, Treloar, Oliver, Rowell , Pickett (McHenry, Robertson, Mead)
    RUCK: Grundy, Naismith (Cameron)
FWD: Whitfield, Martin, Brayshaw, D. Smith, C. Jones, Cockatoo (Rankine, King)

Naismith doesn’t face GG until post byes, and 450k saved allows me to strengthen other areas. I don’t like many of the premo backs, the 2 im considering are Laird & Daniel. As a dogs fan, I rate Daniel from a supercoach role perspective but soft tissue injuries at his age and size aren’t ideal.
Im very surprised at Treloars ownership (8%), and think his post bye scoring last year is a sign of things to come, as his AF and SC scoring start to even out. I’m vary of Danger (with Rowsus’s old analysis in the back of my mine about dropoff after a certain age). Oliver has two taggers the first two rounds but even with last year’s drop he still developed in a few key areas stats wise and I think he’s a very low risk pick with big potential upside.
I had Brayshaw on my watchlist and then read the stats on his scoring when TOG is above 75% (91.8). All 4 of those games were post bye last year, and he’s improved his tank again it seems judging by Freo’s time trial. I can’t ignore Dev Smith at that price regardless of role, and I think 271k for Chayce Jones is a steal, hopefully doesn’t turn into last years Moore in terms of ownership.

Obviously there’s a lot of risk in this side with injury returners and speculatives but I’m happy to take these risks. Would love some thoughts.

    3

    4
    1. I’m trying to make up my mind on Brayshaw. He is ticking a lot of boxers but he only averaged 70 points last year and 20 point jumps don’t happen that often.

But he does tick the low TOG and new midfield role boxes.

There’s a few people rolling with the 6 midfielders structure so you’re not alone, seems to solve alot of problems.

I’m with you on Treloar, can’t fit him in my side but would if I could.

    1. The stars/suns are aligning. (I thought there might be too many people rotating through the midfield.)
“The Suns say Powell will miss the start of the season, but haven’t pencilled in a return date.

The news is worse for rookie Mitch Riordan, with the untried midfielder to miss the entire 2020 season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.”

Powell players 13 games last year.

      1. Thanks Willys Gun, do you think he will have the same JS as Doedee?

I can’t really see in any realm that Doedee gets dropped. Could also go with Hayden Young as well.

    1. Hey Shaggi
Thanks for the League invite. I look forward to retaining the crown?! If memory serves me 🙁
Looks nice and risky (above) to me.
      My only concerns would be:
Hurn: age and the niggles are beginning to hurt his output/no. of games.
Coniglio: so stacked inside, but as he is now captain, could be a ripper pick. I’m going either end of the SC lines with GWS for that reason, but I get it.
DSmith: if he gets substantial MID minutes in the Marsh you can lock him in, but otherwise he’s a no.
To be honest, I like the rest of it. Now there’s a surprise 🙂

  53. I reckon this is possibly the best side I’ve managed to create thus far.

$100 in the kitty so squeezing everything out of the lineup.

    D1: Jake Lloyd.

Probably overpriced if the tail end of 2019 is to go by, but a premium that might pay dividends should Jordan Dawson move back up the ground. Lloyd easily has the ability to pump monster scores out week in, week out.

    D2: James Sicily.

He gave some of us trouble last year, but with Frost, Patton and another KPD I’ve forgotten arriving, surely he gets off the chain more for those intercept marks that score so well.

D3: Dan Houston. Training with the midfield, and Ollie Wines is down. Probably the riskiest player selection in my side right now.

    D4: One guess.

    Of course it’s Sam Docherty.

D5-D8: Hayden Young, Jarred Brander, Jared Rivers, Will Gould

M1: Jack Macrae: The quintessential M1 of the past couple of years, as safe and reliable selection as any.

M2: Patrick Cripps: Usually starts a season on fire and I’m hoping that with extra support, he can escape the troughs that peppered him in the latter half of 2019.

M3: Josh Dunkley: The sky is the limit for the SC scoring of this man.

M4: Patrick Dangerfield. More midfield time, as cheap as he’s been in years. Reckon there’s value here.

M5-M11: Rowell, McHenry, Simpson, Pickett, Maginness, Mead, Robertson

    R: Grundy, Gawn, Comben

    F: Whitfield, Martin

F3: Heeney. Averages about 95-100, and I want a safe pick at F3. Has upside if he can remain fit in the midfield.

F4: Bonar. Heard some good things about him going into the guts.

F5: Hill. Should play on the wing for Freo. Forms a DPP swing set with Brander.

    F6-8: Rankine, M. King, Mahony.

  54. Would it be bizarre to start without Dusty? Currently have him at f2
    My thinking is the following;

    – Trade dusty out, swing S Hill fwd… Leaving my fwd line
    (Whitfield, D Smith, A Bonar, S Hill, N Cockatoo, I Rankine)
Swing Rivers down back to cover for Hill, then that leaves me enough funds to go 6 deep in the mids and bring Dangerfield in my team.

Mids; Macrae, Fyfe, Cripps, Dunkley. Dangerfield, Oliver, Rowell, Pickett

Hope that makes sense to the community. I made the bold decision not to start Martin last season and it paid off i felt. I know he has fwd status this year, however I fee like he is overs. Does anyone agree with me or am i being ludicrous????

Tu; Good idea, start without dusty and go 6 deep in the mids

Td; Dusty is a must start

  55. Usually I run at least 1 mid price risk on each line, currently have only Jacobs between $463k & $273k (Greenwood & Doedee). I’m not confident on any Def premos to maintain starting value over first half of season, so running thin there and gone deeper in the Mids/Fwds. Would look to upgrade any fallen premos there first.
Hoping/risking Naismith or a similar priced ruck plays and Grawndy put a couple of sub par scores in the first half of the year. Obviously starting them likely saves some trades, but I can’t see them going up in value or burning me badly at that price point. The set and forget plus captaincy confidence is nice to have though!
