  1. Latest version of the Champs:

Docherty, Rance, Laird, McGrath, Scharenberg, Berry, (Newman, Ryan)
Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Hannebery, Sloane, Fyfe, DSwallow, Powell-Pepper, Myers, (Barrett, Hibberd, Balic)
    Gawn, Grundy, (Cameron)
NRiewoldt, Dahlhaus, Roughead, McCluggage, JThomas, Bowes, (Battle, Eddy)

$13K in the bank. All rookies subject to change, and I’ve gone with the pricier ones so I can downgrade if necessary. The main players I’m concerned with at the moment are Doc (too pricey?), Swallow (will watch preseason closely), NRoo (see Swallow) and Roughy.
I’m running without ruck cover, because from experience it’s rarely worth it, and I’m really hoping a rookie ruck can get some games early.
3-5-2-3 structure in terms of premiums is fairly standard.

    1. Love that midfield.
There is a lot of love for Josh Kennedy from the Swans but Hanners has been good for me for the last 2 years so I am sticking with him.
      Interested in other people’s thoughts.
      T/U Hanners
      T/D Kennedy

      1. Yeah, toss a coin. I plan on having both there at some stage. I went for Hanners because he’s been a top 3 mid the past two seasons, and he smashed up the time trial at the Swans first pre-season run, even after the post-GF knee surgery. Also, JPK has a history of being a slightly slower starter.
But you can’t really go wrong either way.

        1. Totally agree.

Also wondering about Keiran Jack bouncing back after all that fuss with his folks last year. Will watch the pre-season games before I decide.

          1. Talk is good on him but also talking him taking a more forward role, with Heeney and Mills both looking for midfield time.

To be honest I don’t mind that idea, but we’ll have to watch alphabet cup to know.

  2. This is probably as close as I’m getting to a final team before pre-season, but any and all advice is welcome ๐Ÿ™‚

    DEF: S. Docherty, L. Montagna, A. Rance, R. Laird, T. Williamson, L. Ryan (T. Stewart, C. Sheehan)

    MID: P. Dangerfield, S. Pendlebury, J.J Kennedy, D. Hannebery, N. Fyfe, S. Powell-Pepper, D. Myers, S. Bolton (C. Brown, W. Drew, B. Jarman)

    RUCK: M. Gawn, A. Sandilands (L. Stranadica)

    FWD: L. Dalhaus, L. Franklin, J.Macrae, P.Ryder, W. Rioli, A. Gallucci, (B. Eddy, T. Bayok)

Again, all rookies are subject to change after pre-season.

Also I’m a bit unsure on Montagna and Buddy, I’m not 100% sure if they’re the best options at their price, I’d love to hear what you guys think ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Fairly straight-forward Guns ‘N Rookies set-up which would work well if your rookies get there for Rd1. Montagna & Buddy are definitely the interesting picks that could make or break your season……..

      3

      1. Buddy played 22 last year and seems a bit more level headed at the swans. Dahlhaus only played 17…

        Worth considering that little factoid?

        1

        6
        1. Yes, but, a more complete picture:

          Year Buddy Dahlhaus
          2016 22 17
          2015 17 22
          2014 19 21
          2013 19 22
          2012 16 17
          2011 19 11
          2010 17 0

          Buddy is 30
Dahlhaus is 24 (meaning he was only 17 in 2010)

Last season’s Franklin owners got happy surprise, and last season’s Dahlhaus owners got a sad surprise. The same thing *could* happen again, but the odds seem to favor Dahlhaus for who will play more matches.

          1. Discount the Hawthorn Era and Buddy’s games per year are a substantial improvement.

I’m not going with either at this stage though.

    2. Great side. Buddy had shoulder surgery and hasn’t resumed full training, so there’s a bit of a query over him.

      1. A lot of people running with 3 premium defenders/forward however your structure with 4 on each line looks much more stable. Especially going with 5 premium MIDS and not mucking around with mid pricers (bar Sandilands).

As always, rookies subject to change and you do have a lot of really cheap rookies and nothing in the bank so I would expect to have to drop one premium (possibly for a mid pricer) to fund the cash on upgrading a couple of rookies.

I had to delete my team and plug this in to find how the hell it fit within the salary cap so you know you have a nice line up when someone needs to do that, good stuff!

  3. Would love to know what some of you think of my PODs. maybe a bit too mid priced? Holding $74,300 in the bank.

DEF – T adams, laird, M Johnson, Keeffe, Scharenberg, Hampton (Hibberd, Ryan)

MID- Danger, Pendles, Jelwood, Fyfe, Beams, Murphy, D Swallow, Myers (PPepper, D Gore, Balic)

    RUC – Goldy, Sandy (Strnadica)

FWD – Dollhouse, Macrae, heeney, ryder, Roughy (HAW), Eddy (Pickett, B. Long)

most rookies are place holders but i have selected with the idea of those being the ones i want at this stage.

    1. Johnson & Murphy are the big two that stick out. Not really to my liking but if you’re keen on them, then who am I to talk you out of it ๐Ÿ˜‰

      5

      0
    2. I’d drop Johnson, he’s not worth the risk at his age as he’s shown he’s injury prone and his upside probably isn’t worth it. Murphy as well, has been a tease for a few years now so I’d leave him alone. Eddy as well, small forwards are always inconsistent, so wouldn’t choose him at the start, if at all.

I like Ryder and Heeney, both a risk but worth it potentially.

My theory for mid-pricers is basically only picking them if they’re a player returning from injury and are <$300k or if they're more expensive I'd want to be reasonably confident that they are going to become a keeper. Sandilands fits in that category as does probably beams, ryder and roughy.

Overall i think you'd be best to choose your favourite 3-4 mid pricers and then go guns and rookies.

  4. First Attempt here. Would appreciate any advice.

Def: Docherty, Rance, Laird, Mcgrath, Scharenberg, Berry (Ryan, Vickers-Willis)

Mid: Dangerfield, Pendlebury, JPK, Fyfe, Heppell, Beams, Brodie, Myers (Powell-Pepper, Gore, Hibberd)

    Ruck: Gawn, Sandilands (Strnadica)

Fwd: Dahlhaus, Heeney, Ryder, Roughead, Mcclugage, Bowes ( Pickett, Eddy)

3k in the bank. Gone with couple expensive rooks but will change after preseason. Main concerns is the forward line too risky.

    4

    1. Looks like many will have that similar FWD line, seems fairly strong option right now. Don’t mind that MID just quietly……

    1. Doubt Hartlett can get back to 95+. Beams is a huge injury risk and by his own words will have to manage his knee for the rest of his career. MMurphy could be a better option at that price. Just don’t trust Sandi at 34yrs, and now done his calf. Set and forget in the rucks this year imo. Bennell another huge injury risk but could pay off. Rookies up for grabs at this stage of course. Otherwise good team.

      Good kuck HF!

  7. This is my first take and went with a simple Guns โ€˜N Rookies set-up with 2 mid-pricers in Beams and Roughead.
All rookies are subject to change based on the JTL series.
    All advice is welcome.

Def- Shaw, Laird, JJ, A McGrath, Scharenberg, Long (Ryan, Stewart)

Mid- Danger, Pendles, JPK, Fyfe, Heppell, Beams, Powell-Pepper, Myers (Pickett, Bolton, Graham)

    Ruck- Gawn, Goldy (Strnadica)

Fwd- Dahlhaus, Greene, Roughy, McCluggage, Lebois, Drew (Smith, Eddy)

Got $165,100 in the bank so still a lot of flexibility.

    1. Guns & Rookies with a couple of mid pricers (discounted premiums due to injury) has been proved time and time again to be a winning formula!

Love the Heppell pick, trying to get him in myself however it would be at M7 and my other lines become compromised.

I think Shaw is overpriced and will fall off this season, still think he’ll be top 6 defender so may be worth the extra price just to lock him away.

  8. After a few more tweaks this is the team at the moment.

    Def: S.Docherty, T.Adams, Z.Williams, J.Thurlow, M.Scharenberg, L.Ryan (T.Stewart, B.Long)

    Mid: P.Dangerfield, S.Pendlebury, D.Hannebery, N.Fyfe, J.Viney, D.Beams, D.Swallow, D.Meyers (J.Berry, S.Bolton, J.Graham)

    Ruck: B.Grundy, S.Martin (L.Strandica)

    Fwd: L.Dahlhaus, J.Macrae, J.Roughead, H.McCluggage, J.Pickett, W.Rioli (J.Williams, B.Eddy)

    $141.7k left

Still unsure if Thurlow is worth it being at a really awkward price. Will watch pre season closely to see if he plays the role that Enright played.
Viney had a strong end to the season last year so he should continue on his form.
    Thoughts?

    0

    2
    1. You are right, Thurlow is really awkwardly priced and unfortunately there’s not much between him and Murphy for D4 if you are not wanting a rookie priced player. Would watch JLT but it may be worth dropping him down to McGrath.

While Viney had some good scores in the last 8 rounds, he still only averaged 98 over this time (1 more than his season average). If you are paying over 500k for a MID player, you need them to be a 105+ player and you are better off with Heppell for 15k less.

Overall good structure, going cheaper in the rucks could be a master stroke this season however you may be stuck losing point fast if either Gawn/Goldy goes nuts early on as you effectively have gone set and forget.

  9. Docherty, Rance, Laird, McGrath, Keefe, Berry… (Newman, Ryan)
Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Kennedy, Treloar, Fyfe, McCluggage, Brodie, Myers… (Bowes, Hibberd, Powell-Pepper)
    Gawn, Grundy, (Strnadica)
Dahlhaus, Macrea, Heneey, Ainsworth, JThomas, Pickett… (Smith, Eddy)

    Structure 3-5-2-3…
Question marks over Heeney, Grundy for Goldy?
Not interested in mid prices, Sandy will give me sleepless nights…
    Rookies to change… $32,100 in the bank…

    5

    1. I’m not sold on Heeney myself and he would be my only question mark. As we know more about the rookies you may end up freeing cash by downgrading some of the more expensive ones and he would be the first I’d be spending on.

Otherwise very nice, well balanced team ToneStar. I don’t mind Grundy in the ruck to be honest, defiantly worth the punt.

      1. Cheers Huttabito, Heeney maybe down to a Roughie. I think they can both can average the same, hopefully 85-90. Good for a F6…
Forward KPP do have bad games here and there, so me thinks they’ll be cheaper to pick up during the season…

        1

        1
        1. That they do. I toyed with the idea of having 2 premiums given half of the top 10 FWDS from last year are KPP and you’ll find them significantly cheaper than there starting price than other lines.

          Food for thought.

    1. Ripping team Marcus, can’t really fault.

Not sold on Heeney as I’ve mentioned above however you have selected some of the most expensive rookies so no doubt some will be downgraded come Rd1 team announcements and I would look at upgrading him first.

Would be sitting on this structure til we know more!

Really want to fit Sloane into the midfield ( due to his 118.2 career avg at AO and their first 8 of 13 there) for McCluggage but it means I have to forego Laird and the backline might be a bit to weak with Simpson, Montagna and Hartlett.

    Greatly appreciate any advice.

    1. You have a squad of 15 premo’s and 15 rookies; where they’re distributed across your lines makes zero difference.

If you’re essentially tossing up between Sloane and Laird, then it becomes a pretty straight forward choice.

      1

      2
        1. I actually only counted 12 , my concern would be Joelwood , the rule change will affect him most, how many points that’s likely to take off him is anyone’s guess, great player but think his overall output is gonna take a hit

  13. @Adam

Tring to keep the same premium/rookie structure:
NRoo -> Ryder (Cover for Sandi) 230k
    Simpson -> JJ 60k
    McCarthy -> T.Smith 100k
Will get you McCluggage -> Sloane

As you said, without compromising a back defender not sure how else you can go about this whilst keeping NRoo who could start like a house of fire.

For those interested i will be attending the Collingwood Intra – Club match Wednesday week 6.10pm kick off.
I will post a review in what will probably be Rate my team V by then.
I will give a brief rundown on Pendles , Treloar , Adams and Grundy.
I will cover which rookies play that are SC relevant and how they are tracking.
The backs – Scharenberg and Keeffe along with C.Brown , Daicos , Hoskin Elliot , Jamie Elliot , and Josh Thomas.

    1. Geez i decided to research the new rookies numbers after the interest shown as i gather the likes are more for the Intra – Club review than my SC team.
Anyway i can already report one Rookie that will not be playing. Callum Brown has come down with Glandular fever , and is expected to take 3 weeks to recover was posted on the Collingwood F.C. Website yesterday.

      1. As promised i will do a review of the Collingwood Intra – club match for relevant Supercoach players tonight.
Now i can already report that Keeffe and Josh Thomas will not be taking part as it is the St.Kilda festival this weekend.
That means they have to wait until next weeks challenge vs the dons before they are eligible to play as it was at the festival where the illicit drugs were taken and they have 2 years back dated to the time the illicit drugs were ingested.
Wells , Daicos and Jamie Elliott all expected to have a hit out.

        Stay tuned tonight!

            1. Alright i thought i might start early before i head off with a look at the New player jumper numbers for the pies after my research.

Daniel Wells who wore Number 8 at the Roos is Number 3 for the pies.
Number 3 was previously worn by Macaffer , Stan the Man Magro the nuggety back pocket in the 70s , and Mick Gayfer the stopper.
Also sadly it was the number of the late John McCarthy.

Scharenberg not a new recruit , but he wears Number 12.

              Lyden Dunn Number 15.
              Chris Mayne Number 16.
              Callum Brown 17.

Daicos has Number 26 not following in the footsteps of his famous father Peter the 1990 Premiership player and outrageous goalsneak. As a boy i saw Daics kick 11 goals at Princes Park vs the Blues. Arguably it was 10 goals as i was behind the goals and one snap clearly went around the goal post thru the behinds.
Peter Daicos playing number escapes me though. Anyone?

Will Hoskin – Elliott has big shoes to fill taking over the famous 32 from the great behind kicker from the goal square Travis Cloke.

McLarty wears Number 35 traditionally given to the first selection at the National Draft.

Brayden Sier moves from 35 to Swannies old number 36. Sier is also fond of tattoos and had a locker next to Swan last year.

Finally the rookie listed player Numbers are Mitch McCarthy 34 , Henry Schade 41 , Liam Mackie 44 , and Max Lynch 46.

Have deliberately stayed away from top priced defenders as I believe they are a bit over priced but still selected 3 that I hope will be in top 8/10 by season’s end.

    1. Very nice and balanced team Sean! Sandi massive risk imo. Consider downgrading one of Bennell / Roughy to say a McCluggage / McMcarthy, then upgrade Sandi to Martin / Grundy.

    1. Selwood’s afternoon stat of 98.33 actually surprises me.

How does the x/y stat work? Taking just the Selwood arvo stat, is the 72 included in the 4/10 and the 132 included in the 2/10?

Thanks for posting these Adam ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. The 72 is included in the 4/10 as well as the 132 in the 2/10. Selwood scored less than 100 on 6 occasions with 2 on Friday night and the rest in afternoon games which is why the afternoon stat is so low in comparison to the other timeslots.

    1. Not bad Mike. But reckon you have too many mid pricers in that forward line. Dump Viney for a rookie in the mids, and turn Bennell and / or Roughie into a premo. Sandi and Beams huge risks so consider upgrading them too.

    1. Hello all!

Very interesting as always going through the teams. I’m not sold on quite a few VERY popular choices such as Adams, Swallow, Murphy and Ryder. Will need to see a lot over the pre-season.

      Current team:

      Def.
      Docherty, Shaw, Laird
      Hibberd (Nth), Collins, Ryan,
      (Vickers-Willis, long)

      Mids.
Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Rockcliff, Sloane, Ward, Fyfe, Beams,
      Powell-Pepper,
      (Myers, Freeman, Graham)

      Ruck.
      Gawn, Sandi
      (Strained-dicka)

      Fwd.
      Dahlhaus, Macrae, Roughead
      Black, Pickett, Bolton,
      (Smith, Eddy)

This year going to try to stick fairly close to guns and rookies after last years failures.

      Carn those Dees!

    1. Cheap ruck options if you’re going that far down the budget path include Boyd and Witts, Nankervis and the ever injured Sandi.

I’m seriously considering Witts, based on preseason.

    1. He’s not the worst option Jathkel, though he’s still not doing any contact training. Probably depends if you’re running with Fyfe, Beams & Swallow as well. If you threw Ablett into that mix, it’s a pretty risky midfield.

      Say he plays 18 games, averages 120 and you use a rookie to cover him for the other 4 games, who averages 80;

      Ablett (18 x 120) + rookie (4 x 80) = 2480 total points

On the other hand, for less money you can lock in JPK, Hanners or Neale at their current average (113) for 22 games, and get 2486 points.

So, you’re really relying on Ablett to play more than 18 games, to come out in front. Of course, he may average 125, or play 20 games, or that rookie may average 90, but it’s a lot of ‘maybes’ for a relatively small benefit.

    2. Rocket says GAJ will spend a lot more time in the forward line this year. He’s a legend, but I’m not picking a 32 year old 620K forward with a recent history of injuries, when there are so many other viable mid options.

I know its not a great ave with no prior history of scoring well, but he is turning 26 this season and appears to be maturing as a player. Being from SA i saw a few Port games last year and liked the way he played. Atacked the ball hard and ran all day from defensive 50.
I have no real confidence in any of the other defenders to churn out much better scores and he is a consistent player providing a saving on the other defenders who will probably all end up ave around 95 pts i think.
    I’m crazy right?

  32. Most recent draft with a G and R strategy. Im doubtful Murphy KK Beams will be in top players at their position so will just require a trade to upgrade them. Like everyone unsure yet on rookies so some are just place holders.

M Danger Pendles JPK Sloane Fyfe Berry SPP Myers Pickett Bolton Graham
    R Gawn Goldy Strnadica

  33. Only my second year of Supercoach wouldn’t mind being critiqued on my current team:

DEF โ€“ Adams, Laird, Johannisen, McGrath, Scharenberg, Ryan (Hibberd, Stewart)

MID โ€“ Dangerfield, Hannebery, Fyfe, Heppell, Beams, Swallow, Powell-Pepper, Myers (Pickett, Freeman, Graham)

    RUCK โ€“ Goldstein, Martin (Strndica)

FWD โ€“ Dalhaus, Macrae, Ryder, Heeney, Roughead, McCluggage (Bolton, Eddy)

Have 78k left and feel like I need another premo MID, but dont know how to go about it.

    1. The obvious option is to replace one of the 3 midpricers you have in the forward line with a rookie, and then use that cash to upgrade either Beams or Swallow to a genuine premium. But having said that, I like the setup you have now – with a bit of luck (namely injuries), you’ll get to a full premo team pretty quickly.

      3

      0
    2. There’s heaps of value in this team, which reads great on paper (or screen). However of the 16 premo/keepers in your team, only four have played a full season in ANY of the past three years (Danger/Hanners/Heppell/Swallow), and two of those haven’t played for a year.

You def premo’s alone only played 44 of a possible 66 games last year.

  35. anyone wanting to roll with Scharenberg as a starting rookie might need to re-evaluate , Bucks did sing his praises this morning although did mention the VFL .

still early in the piece but though ti’d mention it ….. may become a good downgrade option

    1. Im thinking it’s only going to be one of Keefe and Scharenberg in, with most likely Reid playing back and Keefe playing forward.

Preseason sees all and knows all.

  37. First team post Sandilands, had to lose a super premium MID (JPK->SPS) to accommodate Goldstein and upgrade Ryder->Macrae. Now I’ve cooled off and thought about it, not sure I can trust Sandilands anymore. There was always an injury risk in picking him and this just reaffirms that risk.

DEF: Montagna, Rance, Laird, Keefe, Berry, Newman (Vickers-Willis, Hibberd)

    1. Don’t mind it at all Hutta. Riewoldt, Montagna & Rance should prove to be decent PODs early on. Most will try and wait for a price drop there…..

    2. Great side Huttabio. The Rocky/Fyfe/Swallow combo could be risky.

With Roo/Dahl/Macrae sharing a bye, maybe downgrade Macrae to Roughy, which will free up some cash to upgrade Rocky to a more durable mid (JPK, Hanners, Selwood)?

      1. Cheers guys.

Schwartz, most should drop throughout the season, so I’m saving cash on Doc/Shaw and waiting for them to drop. They’ll have higher BEs so more chance to drop further in price. Just hope I can make up the points elsewhere (i.e. Getting that 600k premium over someone like Heppell). I’ve already got the most expensive on 3 lines and the 4th just really starts to hurt your structure, especially with a GnR structure.

Chips, they are risky but all come with such great reward and all looking very fit this pre-season. Bar injury, those 5 MIDS aren’t moving. Didn’t look into to byes, cheers! I usually build my team up a few weeks out but something to keep an eye on.

        1. Nice side Hutts,

I think with Sandi going down it may be a blessing in disguise, I wasn’t really all that happy having Ryder in the fwd line anyways.
The Gawn – Goldy combo looks so much better, ok we lose 1 in the guts but overall I’m liking it.

          1

          0
    1. Not yet but I’d be working on a plan B just in case. As Huttabito has shown it will take some significant changes to your structure to replace him.
It will be interesting to see how Ryder’s selection percentages hold up as people drop off Sandilands.

  38. $46, 800 remaining.

Rookies can be considered placeholders, though I’m trying to pick the good ones.

DEF: Shaw, Adams, Hodge, Berry, Vicker-Willis, Hibberd (NM), (Newman, Ryan)

MID: Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Treloar, Bontempelli, Fyfe, Beams, Ainsworth, Foote, (Myers, Powell-Pepper, Barrett)

    RUC: Grundy, Sandilands, (Witts)

FWD: Dahlhaus, Macrae, Acres, Bennell, McCluggage, Rioli, (Smith, Eddy)

If Sandi is nonviable, I’ll most likely raise the cash by sacrificing Beams.

    3

    4
    1. Don’t mind Hodge as a smokey option in DEF, just quietly. Acres is an interesting choice. That’s a big gamble on a breakout……..maybe not for me this year. Plus I’d want at least one of Gawn/Goldy to start with in the Ruck, little too speculative for me there.

      2

      0
      1. I figure that most people would be gambling on a breakout at F3 – we’re not exactly spoiled for choice with FWD Premiums this year.

        5

        0
      2. Don’t mind the Hodge option either. With Mitchell/Lewis gone, and Hawks likely to have a few more close games this year, you’d think Hodge will get a run in the middle if a game is on the line (when big points are up for grabs).

        0

        1
    2. How much of Bonts scoring was due to the Ruck pattern
As this will now change and the dogs draw I see to much risk
Feel he could be gotten much cheaper later

      2

      1
      1. Bont averaged about 1 hitout to advantage per game last year, so he scored about 5 ppg in the ruck.
Whether the rule change will affect him or not is unclear – he has more opportunity to win the contested ball at ground level now.

        2

        0
    3. Sandi will be viable, or else you will get a look at the best of Nankervis/Boyd/Witts.

And god knows who will be rucking at a couple of teams yet, particularly WC.

    1. I really like Robbie Gray I think IF Port win enough games he could win the Brownlow this season if fit. I’m also starting to think he may be a POD which is making me want to put him in my side even more. I also think you would be silly not to start with Gawn.

      2

      0
    2. I’d suggest downgrading Bennell to an expensive rookie that will play, and using the cash to bring Gawn in for Goldy. Or if you’re set on Goldy, upgrade Beams to a $600k mid.
As much as I love Gray (had him last season too), if you’re paying close to $600k for a mid, you want them to be a guaranteed top 10 player (think JPK, Jelwood etc). Gray can always be picked up cheaper, I think he was close to $450k last year at his cheapest.

    1. Your entire forward line is a lottery. Dahl only played 17, Lids is overpriced for a guy who hasn’t played a decent full season.

Bennell and Roughy i can justify risk versus reward, but we need to see Nankervis lock down that Fwd/Ruck.

I think Black is a depth only player for Geelong – they will go for players like Cockatoo or MacCarthy first.

    1. Cey and Beams could be reasonable. I don’t know there is enough growth in CEY or Elliott to do more than get you stuck near 400k – same reasoning I dropped both Elliott and Bob Murphy.

Upgrade one and rookie the other and this side makes a lot more sense.

Any feedback welcome. I know I’m heavy in the midfield. I think it’s obviously the most predictable area to find keepers and score big points. I could potentially drop one premium there and go set and forget ruck division or another premium forward or back. I think there a lot of wait and see with the backline and forward line so I’m happy to go a little skinny there. 20k in the bank. All comments appreciated.

    1. I don’t think you’re too heavy in the mids at all. I think 5 or 6 elite mids is the way to go this year, with all the uncertainty in other lines. The team looks good mate!

If you’re going to have Witts as R2, you 100% need either Gawn or Goldy as R1.

  51. Finally have my first draft 2017 team. Just imagine it full of asterisks for injury recoveries, rookie selections, etc…

DEF: Docherty, Shaw, T. Adams, Marchbank, Ooh Ahh A. McGrath, Scrimshaw, (Scharenberg, L. Ryan)

MID: Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Hannebery, Fyfe, Murphy, D. Swallow, Petrevski-Seton, Myers, (Powell-Pepper, Freeman, J. Graham)

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Strndcla..whatever)

FWD: Dahlhaus, Heeney, Bennell, McCluggage, Bowes, J. Pickett, (C. Brown, Eddy)

Mottsy dazzled me with Marchbank’s potential a few weeks back and he’s survived the first complete team, but I’m not sold now that not a single other person mentioned him! Might need to reassess there.

Seeing Horse talk up Callum Mills’ chances in the midfield has me wary of Heeney’s midfield time. The Swans lack depth in the forward and Heeney was pivotal in forward pressure last year. With Papley sidelined, Heeney may need to keep that forward role from last year. He’s still in my side, but he’ll need to have a big run through the mids in pre-season matches.

$98k in the bank for playing around with. If anything I may upgrade a rookie for McCarthy if he’s showing enough in the alphabet cup.

    1. A solid all-round team. I like your choice of Murphy over the usual Beams.

A very interesting point on Heeney and Mills. I’m personally steering clear of both, as their roles are unknown at this stage.

      5

      0
    2. Papley and Parker’s injuries will see Heeney in the forwards for a bit yet.

Still think that he’ll pay off further down the track, but if Bennell gets a good run in the preseason he will take Heeney’s place.

  52. Now that Sandi is all but ruled out for me, I’ve had to re-adjust my structure:

    Version 13, $92,500 remaining.

DEF: Joey, Rance, Laird, McGrath, Scharenberg, Ryan (Stewart, Long)

MID: Danger, Pendles, JPK, Jelwood, Treloar, Fyfe, D. Swallow, SPP (Myers, Pickett, Freeman)

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Strnadica)

FWD: Dahlhaus, Roughy, McCluggage, Bowes, Black, Ahern (Leonardis, Eddy)

All rookies are subject to change, I’ve chucked a few high-priced ones in just in case.
My mids are pretty set, but I need to settle on two of Jelwood, Hanners and Treloar.
I hate my forward line, but Dahl and Roughy are literally the only two forwards I’m comfortable starting with. I might try to tweak things around and sneak Ryder in as well, as ruck cover (I had Ryder in at R2 until I got rid of Sandi).

    2

    1
    1. Gotta be hanners & treloar as the 2 you pick can always select jelwood up at a cheaper price during the year

Could be a bit risky playing 4 rookies in the forward line

      1

      0
      1. It is risky, but basically all of the other decent premiums are KPP, and will all be able to be picked up at close to $400k at some stage. I’m happy to wait for them.

        1

        1
        1. That’s true bAps, however if a KPP punches out a huge score early, then you’re potentially missing out on the upside.

Kennedy, for example, scored a season high 180 in R1 last year, and didn’t drop to 400K until R19. He also only averaged 86 from R11 onwards, so if you missed out on his early tons, he was actually a pretty ordinary upgrade despite finishing as the second best forward overall.

JJK, Buddy, Lynch & Gunston all played 22 games last year, and Roo played 21. If you know you’re going to get a full season with a 95 average, I think you’re best to sign up from R1, to make sure you get the monster scores, along with the duds.

          5

          1
          1. That’s why I downgraded Dahlhaus to Lynch.

Plus I tip big improvements in the GC mids this year, and the Doggies don’t get their easy Etihad run.

    1. Mostly because of his age and that he is coming back from a major injury.
That combined with how well the rest of the team stood up in his absence, maybe leading to less need for him to play the role he used to getting the ball out of defence, i think that he is too much of a risk as he has a much higher potential to drop 20 pts from his ave than hold it or see it rise.

      5

      0
    2. There’s plenty of teams with Bob in them, but I’m personally staying away.
He’ll most likely average around 80-85, so wont be a top6/10 defender. Which means you’ll have to trade him out at some stage, but he won’t have made enough cash to warrant a trade. You’re better off starting with a rookie who’ll make $200k, or to start an actual premium who will be a top 10 defender.

      5

      0
      1. Exactly.

He could average 95, in which case he’s a keeper, but then you’ve only effectively made $90k or so on him, even if you saved a trade.

But that assumes he plays 22.

        2

    Rucks: Gawn Grundy (Strnadica)

Fwd: Dahlhaus Macrae Roughead Mcluggage Black Bowes (Eddy Leonardis)

    Any advice is appreciated.
I’m a pies fan is that shown clearly with my team and should I get rid of one or two of them?
    thanks

    1. Not especially. Maybe in choosing Grundy over Martin, who has prior form at 110+, and who’s last 4 of the year averaged 110 despite injury.

But Brodie Grundy didn’t drop under 90 after the bye rounds either.

So all of them seem reasonable choices, but it is gonna make the byes harder.

Midfield is very strong, without sacrificing too much from other lines. Pretty good first draft.

    1. Lookout on berry, I think he is injured. You have got heaps of money in your subs if you need extra cash. Midfield does need more premium players, and you can get easy money to afford them through your subs (trade them for cheaper options).

  62. Any love for Ethan Hughes as defender from Freo priced @ $298600 rebounding defender? Contract expires 2018 and Sutcliffe and Sheridan have not come on. Played 3 games round 7, 8, & 9 and did not appear until Round 16 in WAFL. Played Rounds 20 & 21 and then was sent back to WAFL by Ross for the finals. Averaged 20 disposals (12/8) & 6 marks in WAFL. I don’t know much about him other than rookie draft 2014, 22 years old. If he starts there may be value as he could possibly average 80-85 on his WAFL stats.

    1. Potentially 11/22 top scoring positions is a great starting point. Nailing Mitchell and the 2 midpricers Murphy & Heeney and you are up and running. Everyone will have the starting mid/fwd and fwd rookies at the start, little scope for variation amongst this group.

  64. First crack with little research on rookies and subject to change. Gone the changing of the guard as a theme this year and giving the next gen a big crack. Thurlow is the big one for me and the Cats need someone to rebound this season. Heeney will 100% arrive this season.
