Round 2 Review

Written by Dane on March 25 2024

St Kilda (14.10.94) defeated Collingwood (12.7.79)

  1. Jack Steele/Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (120). Attended this game on Thursday and hard to split these two for B.O.G. Steele just stamped himself at the stoppages with 26 touches (10 contested) with 6 clearances and 11 tackles, while NWM was slick all night with 32 touches and 11 marks plus a team best 613 metres gained.
  2. Darcy Cameron (114). Little bit of everything with 13 touches, 6 marks, 1 goal and 26 hitouts for the game.
  3. Jack Higgins (111). Most damaging forward on the night with 4 majors from his 13 touches (11 contested).
  4. Max King (110). Not far off Higgins, King slotted 3 majors from 15 touches and 8 marks opposed to Frampton.
  5. Mitch Owens (108). Ran freely around the ground, finding 22 touches with 5 marks and 5 tackles in a variety of positions.

Other 100+ scores: Rowan Marshall (106), Marcus Windhager (104), Josh Battle (101), Patrick Lipinski/Scott Pendlebury (100)

Disappointment: Has to be Nick Daicos for his 54 from 22 touches, which included an uncharacteristic 5 clangers and just 68% DE.

Rookies: Finlay Macrae has been around for a while but still can’t crack it at senior level despite consistent performances elsewhere. Came on as the sub for just 12 points. Reef McInnes (72) was dangerous up forward with 3 goals from 12 touches. Nothing wrong with the game from Darcy Wilson, 12 touches, 6 marks for 59 points.

Injuries: Nasty looking fall took Mason Wood out of the game very early, while Markov was later subbed off for the Pies. Later news that Liam Henry also out for months with a hamstring.

Adelaide (11.11.77) defeated by Geelong (14.12.96)

  1. Tom Stewart (134). Game 150 and completely dominated with 28 touches and 11 marks which I think had 10 intercepts? Also a huge 613 metres gained and 89% DE.
  2. Matt Crouch (128). Found the ball at will with 37 touches (12 contested), 9 clearances but it was the 1 clanger and 89% DE that boosted him.
  3. Rory Laird (120). Standard Laird. 29 touches (18 contested), 8 clearances and 7 tackles.
  4. Gryan Miers/Reilly O’Brien (116). Miers was that linkman between the arcs finding 26 touches but also slotting 3 goals himself. O’Brien dominated the hitouts with 47 and found 18 touches (8 contested) with 9 clearances and interestingly, 10 clangers that didn’t hold him back.
  5. Tom Hawkins (113). Just 11 touches and 5 marks but kicked 4 goals straight and his DE was 90%, enough to round out the top 5.

Other 100+ scores: Brandan Parfitt (102)

Disappointment: Going to have to give it Dawson (96) again for another sub-ton to start the year. 26 touches and 12 tackles is a great return but he only went at 61% DE.

Rookies: Dempsey was a popular option this week, and while he didn’t have the same scoreboard impact, 16 touches and 59 points is a solid return. Mannagh kicked 1 major from 13 touches for 57 points while Clark was much better with 13 touches (9 contested), 4 clearances and 60 points. Mullin also got a game but just 7 touches and 29 points. The only Crow to cover is Burgess for his 2 goals from 9 touches and 8 marks which resulted in 54 points.

Injuries: Dangerfield is listed on the injury report with a hamstring. Berry the sub for the Crows in a tactical move.

North Melbourne (11.10.76) defeated by Fremantle (15.12.102)

  1. Luke Jackson (178). A monsterous game from Jackson, he found 24 touches (15 contested) with 5 tackles, 2 goals, 21 hitouts and elite DE of 96% for the highest score of the round.
  2. Caleb Serong (141). Picked up where he left off last week, finding 35 touches (15 contested) to pair with 6 tackles and 505 metres gained.
  3. Tom Powell (129). Career high score for Powell who found 28 touches (9 contested) with 8 clearances and 5 tackles plus over 500 metres gained. Also helping him along to a career high score was 2 goals and no clangers.
  4. Luke Ryan (127). Didn’t waste a single touch, running at 100% DE from his 23 touches and 7 marks for another monster score.
  5. Andrew Brayshaw (123). A tale of two halves as Brayshaw stamped his authority in the second half when the game had to be won. 27 touches with 1 goal for him.

Other 100+ scores: Jordan Clark (119), Harry Sheezel (113), Tristan Xerri (108), Luke Davies-Uniacke (105), George Wardlaw (102), Zac Fisher (101)

Disappointment: Second week in a row for Hayden Young in this category, his 62 not ideal.

Rookies: Starting with McKercher for his 95 here. Went at a very nice 90% DE from his 22 touches and 6 marks in a back flank role, he’ll be set for some nice price rises after this week. Duursma (53) and Pink (58) slightly scored unders compared to their stats, but doubt theres reason for them to be dropped. Lazzaro was going sweetly with 66 from his 13 touch game before being subbed out, while Dawson (42) played his role down back. Jeremy Sharp (63) kicked the sealer, while others in that rookie threshold included Emmett (39), Taberner (52) and first gamer Draper (35).

Injuries: No injuries on the match report, just Fyfe and Lazzaro the subs.

Hawthorn (5.8.38) defeated by Melbourne (14.9.93)

  1. Christian Petracca (146). Stamped himself on this game at different times, ultimately finishing with 29 touches (14 contested) with 6 clearances, 6 marks, 1 goal and elite DE considering his playstale of 86%.
  2. James Sicily (123). A massive first quarter propelled him, but in a bounce back week for the Hawks skipper he led their scoring thanks to 27 touches and 13 marks with 506 metres gained.
  3. Jack Scrimshaw/Max Gawn (113). Benefited from the Hawks kick mark play style, finding 26 touches and 9 marks while running at 92% DE, while Gawn, a popular VC pick, found 17 touches, 6 marks, 6 tackles and 24 hitouts.
  4. Alex Neal-Bullen (109). Solid game from ANB as that link player, he found 24 touches and laid 6 tackles for the game.
  5. Ed Langdon (108). Wing to wing, arc to arc as we’d expect, Langdon found 26 touches and had 4 tackles to round out the top 5.

Other 100+ scores: Jack Viney (107).

Disappointment: Jai Newcombe has been well under to start the season, this week only finding 17 touches for 66 points. Oliver (82) will have a massive BE and will have to come into consideration sooner rather than later.

Rookies: Prized draft pick Nick Watson snagged his first goal in this contest, finding 13 touches in a promising game to score 56 points. Windsor and Howes enjoyed their first price rises thanks to scores of 40 and 68 respectively, while Hore played game 2 but was the sub for just 12 points.

Injuries: The key defensive stock at Melbourne might have a new guard with both May (ribs) and Lever (knee) finishing the game on the bench. Breust the sub for the Hawks.

Sydney (19.17.131) defeated Essendon (15.11.101)

  1. Tom Papley (155). Starred on Saturday evening, kicking 4 goals from 26 touches and 10 marks plus 11 contested possessions, a career high score.
  2. Errol Gulden (149). Smooth performance from Errol with 24 touches, 9 marks and 5 tackles, pairing it with 2 goals and 6 clearances for his best return of the season.
  3. Zach Merrett (132). Did everything he could as per usual, finding 32 touches (13 contested) with 5 clearances, 6 tackles and 2 majors.
  4. Isaac Heeney (128). One of the most popular trade targets this week and for good reason, Heeney found 32 touches (14 contested), 8 clearances, 4 tackles and 1 goal for another monster score.
  5. Will Setterfield (126). Another ton for Setterfield who did this last year to before falling off. 29 touches (17 contested) with 8 clearances and 7 tackles was a great performance.

Other 100+ scores: Jade Gresham (121), Chad Warner (102)

Disappointment: A semi popular midprice pick in Tsatas couldn’t find his groove here, only getting to 46 points from his 14 touches.

Rookies: Not much to cover here. Davey Jnr falls under the price of Harley Reid, but just 1 tackle and 1 kick for points for him. Corey Warner was subbed on and could’ve had a good night if he kicked straight, finishing with 3 behinds from 11 touches for 40 points. Roberts was great though and would’ve made it into plenty of best 18 scores thanks to his 19 touch, 8 mark, 94 point game.

Injuries: Cunningham didn’t make it far into the match after suffering a head knock, while Draper was subbed off tactically for the Bombers.

Western Bulldogs (18.7.115) defeated Gold Coast (10.7.67)

  1. Tim English (138). Coming up against a very fresh ruckman, English just did his thing with 15 touches, 6 marks, 8 tackles and 25 hitouts for the game.
  2. Marcus Bontempelli (136). Standard Bont things, overcoming an ankle roll to find 32 touches (19 contested) with 11 clearances, 2 goals and a team best 567 metres.
  3. Cody Weightman (135). Put through 4 of his 6 majors in the first term alone which boosted his score, finishing with 14 touches and 4 tackles to pair with his 6 pack.
  4. Tom Liberatore/Touk Miller (115). Standard as well from these two. 20 touches, 9 tackles, 7 clearances, 1 goal for Libba, while Miller had 30 touches (15 contested) with 10 tackles.
  5. Sam Darcy (109). Career best score for Darcy in his season debut. 15 touches (8 contested) with 6 marks, 4 tackles, 12 hitouts and 2 goals.

Other 100+ scores: Bailey Dale (103), Sam Collins/Sam Flanders (102), Adam Treloar (100)

Disappointment: Another poor score from Budarick, 6 clangers from his 18 touches resulting in just 46 points.

Rookies: Plenty to cover here. Darcy has had his time so firstly, Coffield suffered a shoulder injury which saw him subbed out on 3, further adding to the rookie injury crisis in our back lines. Better news with Sanders though, he found 22 touches (10 contested) with 6 clearances and 5 tackles while running at 86% DE for his score of 99Khamis (65) was solid and Gallagher (39) will join him on the bubble next week. Berry unfortunately backed up his ton from last week with a 24, while popular pick Sexton (47) wasn’t much better. Uwland had his hands full with Weightman but was respectable with 15 touches and 64 points. Moyle actually split the hitouts 25-25 with English and found 14 touches himself for 90 points, while the final one to cover was Jed Walter on debut. Did some super eye-catching things for his 37 on debut, but did only had 4 touches.

Injuries: The win for the Bulldogs was soured by a shoulder injury to Coffield and a nasty looking concussion to Richards. Nothing on the injury report for the Suns, Long the player subbed out.

Richmond (13.14.92) defeated by Port Adelaide (18.14.122)

  1. Zak Butters (175). Popped over to the G yesterday to watch this performance from Butters, who couldn’t be touched all afternoon. 34 touches (14 contested) with 7 clearances, 7 marks, 1 goal and just the 1 clanger in a B.O.G performance.
  2. Williem Drew (144). Career best score from Drew with 27 touches (10 contested), 6 marks, 1 goal and nearly 500 metres gained for the game.
  3. Liam Baker (140). Kept Richmond in the game at times, slotting 3 goals from his 23 touches (11 contested) plus 4 tackles and 5 clearances.
  4. Dan Houston (108). Didn’t do anything crazy flashy but found triple figures again thanks to 25 touches (10 contested), over 500 metres gained and 1 goal.
  5. Daniel Rioli (103). Provided his usual drive off half-back with 21 touches @ 90% DE, while also sneaking forward for 1 goal, his first ton of the year.

Other 100+ scores: Kane Farrell (101), Tim Taranto (100)

Disappointment: Unfortunately, poor disposal hurt Jayden Short (64) this week, just 66% DE for him from 21 touches.

Rookies: Burgoyne (57) and Mead (76) in this one for Port, but they’re at slightly increased prices anyway. The Tigers had debutant Lefau (26) who had 5 touches on debut, plus Brown (63) down back who made his debut late last season, as well as Trezise (69) who had 14 touches (8 contested) @ 85% DE. Seth Campbell played a nice third game with 14 touches and nearly 400 metres gained for 80 points, resulting in a solid first price rise.

Injuries: Taranto is noted on the report with an ankle concern, while Jones had a corked calf for Port. Banks was the player initially subbed out for the Tigers though.

West Coast (5.13.43) defeated by GWS (16.12.108)

  1. Jeremy McGovern (144). Has these sort of games where he just intercepts everything, and thats what he did here. 26 touches (9 contested) with 7 marks and clean DE of 80% for this game best score.
  2. Kieran Briggs (139). Admittedly, poor last week but had a favourable matchup here to find 21 touches (15 contested) with 5 tackle, 34 hitouts and 12 clearances in just 71% game time.
  3. Tom Green (137). Popular C pick and delivered with another massive game of 34 touches (21 contested) with 8 clearances, 6 tackles and a game best 767 metres gained. Highest scoring player in the game after 3 weeks.
  4. Sam Taylor (127). Similar to McGovern, just put himself in the right spots and benefited. 17 touches (10 contested) with 10 marks, no clangers and 88% DE for the game.
  5. Lachie Whitfield (124). Tempting us as an option once again after three tons to start the year. 36 touches @ 80% DE with 5 marks and 562 metres gained to round out the top 5.

Other 100+ scores: Elliot Yeo/Liam Duggan (110), Harvey Thomas (107), Connor Idun (102)

Disappointment: Either there just wasn’t enough points to go around, or Josh Kelly (78) got criminally underscored for his 28 touch, 2 goal effort.

Rookies: Really nice game from Harvey Thomas (107) who found 21 touches (11 contested) plus 8 tackles which will be great for his cash generation. The same can be said for Cadman (90) who had 3 goals from 9 touches and 4 tackles, as well as Wehr (70) who had 18 touches. Reid (63) found 17 touches (8 contested), the best of the Eagles, leading Jamieson (46), Chesser (30) and Barnett (22).

Injuries: Looks like just tactical subs here, with Ash and Barnett claiming the red vests.

  1. Wow! Who would have thought? Harvey Thomas 107 after a pair of 40’s in previous 2 games. Maybe other rookies can perform equally well against WC.

  2. Hard to touch Butters when he throws his head back all the time and plays for frees. Good player but don’t know who’s the bigger stager between him and Naicos.
