West Coast vs Essendon

Despite in-accurate kicking (14.22), West Coast still came away with a good win on Thursday night. Dom Sheed led all scorers on the night with a 36 touch, 2 goal game resulting in 148 points, a great reward for anyone who kept him, while fellow mid Yeo’s rich vein of form continues with a massive 142, courtesy of 25 touches and 12 tackles. Both Luke Shuey and Jack Redden scored 122, while it was the latter’s 200th AFL game. The hard working Jamie Cripps also scored in triple figures with 104, while Andrew Gaff (89), Shannon Hurn (92), Liam Ryan (90) and Brad Shepperd (95) weren’t far off. Up forward all 9 of Josh Kennedy’s (86) disposals were shots on goal, while first-gamer Cameron (69) showed some of his brothers spark in a 2 goal performance on debut. Bad news coming out the game was a suspension to Jeremy McGovern for next week against Hawthorn.

Essendon just couldn’t keep up in this game, but still had some solid contributors across the board. Good news for owners of popular picks in Merrett (104) and Shiel (97), as they both returned respectable scores from this game, while across half-back Hooker had 28 touches and 15 marks for his 110. Skipper Dyson Heppell hit the ton (101) for his 30 touch game, while up forward both Begley (95) and Laverde (90) offered a presence and kicked goals to keep the Bombers in it. Not much else to mention Supercoach wise for them, although owners of Clarke, in his third game, should feel hard done by after his 15 touch, 6 tackle game was only given 59 points. Anyone with Matt Guelfi keep an eye on the news after his night ended early.

Question from the game: Did McGovern deserve a suspension?

Supercoach query: How many people held Sheed throughout the byes?

Hawthorn vs Sydney

The Swans came away with a hard fought win on Friday night but it had its casualties, more on that later. Luke Parker starred on the night with a massive 31 touches, 7 marks, 12 tackles, 7 clearances and a goal netting him a game-high 138. Next best was backman Mills on 132, who’s elite disposal use (95% on 21 touches), along with 13 marks, boosted his score. Fellow backmen Rampe (100) and Lloyd (105) kept the great scores coming, while early season bolter Zak Jones had 27 touches running from half back for his score of 117. Jordan Dawsons (104) breakout season continued, while big-man Sinclair (115) was fantastic on the night with an all around performance, but unfortunately finished the night with a concussion. Other Supercoach relevant scores came from Heeney (90), Papley (89) and on return Kennedy (77). Lastly, despite kicking 4 goals from 5 touches, Lance Franklin’s night will be remembered for his 3rd quarter hamstring injury that could rule him out for up to a month.

Hawthorn seem out of the finals race now, but stranger things have happened! Not a great deal to look at Supercoach wise here, with only wingman Henderson (119) cracking triple figures due to his 29 touch, 8 mark, 1 goal game. Twin 96’s went to Smith and O’Meara, while 87 to Sheils and 80 to Gunston weren’t horrible. Nothing much else to mention except that Sicily (40) once again played forward for some reason and will be dirt cheap very soon.

Question from the game: To any Hawthorn supporters out there, what is the reason Sicily is playing forward or is it merely a game-time decision?

Supercoach query: Will the return and increased minutes of Kennedy slow down Parkers scoring?

Melbourne vs Fremantle

Melbourne won a see-sawing affair on a chilly Saturday afternoon at the MCG. Max Gawn did his usual thing with 46 hitouts, 20 touches, 8 marks and a goal to score 151 and lead all scorers on the day. Next best was big forward Tom McDonald, who used his big presence to play a pivotal role with 28 touches and 3 goals to score 135, his best score of the season by 40-odd points. Many other Demons reached above and beyond triple figures so in no particular order they were: Petracca and Brayshaw (101), Viney (106), Salem (104), Oliver (114) and rookie Lockhart (108). Backman Sam Frost (92) played a great game rebounding the ball, while up forward Tim Smith (68) kicked 3 goals for the day. Disappointing scores came from rookies Hore (49) and Baker (55).

For Fremantle the loss was soured by injuries to very important players in Hill (Stephen) and Hogan. Hill’s injury seems to be a relapse of his quad issue, while Hogan’s was a foot issue that happened in the first quarter, and you wonder whether the loss could be attributed to these unfortunate circumstances. Ed Langdon (114) led the scoring for Freo due to 24 touches and a goal, while the next best was Matera on 112, largely due to his 3 goals. Walters (100) kept his strong form going with 3 goals of his own and 18 touches, but may come under scrutiny for a headbutt. Across the backline Ryan (106) and Logue (103) both used the ball extremely well (87% and 88% DE). Elsewhere Fyfe had 31 touches for his 91, but was held back by 8 clangers, while Brad Hill (83) also had 31 touches but used it poorly (61%). Bewley (68) will continue to make money, while Mundy (63) will continue to lose money.

Question from the game: Are Fremantle really the finals contender that they seem to be?

Supercoach query: To anyone who watched the game, did Gawn deserve an 82

StKilda Vs Brisbane

Brisbane won this game on the back of a 9-goal 3rd quarter where they utterly dominated. Charlie Cameron (108) was the star all day with 5 goals and 13 touches and is a barometer for this team. His score was bettered by a number of Lions though, with the biggest score of the day going to big man, Stefan Martin. 22 touches with 8 marks, plus 25 hitouts gave him 130, a season best. Elsewhere Jarryd Lyons (112) kicked 2 goals, as did Christensen (106), while the magician Dayne Zorko had 28 touches (24 kicks), 4 tackles and a goal for his 117. Daniel Rich kept his solid season going with 113, while the big Oscar McInerney (102) had the best score of his career. Other good scores came from Witherden (95) and Robinson (89), but popular picks of Neale (79), Andrews (56) and Answerth (38) were not desirable.

A bad day for the Saints, not much else to say about it. In his first game for the club, Dan Hannebery had 27 touches and 5 marks for his 96, so he could provide a good downgrade option for anyone who is willing to take a big risk this late in the season. Rowan Marshall has outshone all my expectations (for a while now) to keep his breakout season going with another great score of 119, due to 12 touches, 5 tackles and 37 hitouts, while reliable mid Seb Ross had 30 touches that contributed to his 101. Only Jade Gresham (106) also broke 100, while Billings and Hind were both in the 90’s. Josh Battle (87) continued his solid season after a move to defence, while up forward Josh Bruce (78) kicked 2 goals.

Question from the game: Which small forward would you prefer to have in your team, Cameron or Walters?

Supercoach query: Will Hannebery tempt anyone? His Supercoach history includes 2 seasons of an average over 110.

Port Adelaide vs Geelong

Geelong’s love affair with the after bye loss continued on its merry way Saturday night, falling by 11 points. Patrick Dangerfield tried his best to drag his side over the line with a 27 touch (14 contested) 4 tackle, 1 goal night to finish on 141, while Mitch Duncan’s (121) strong season continued with a 35 touch game. The only other Cat to break triple figures was Gary Ablett (100), he had 19 touches and 2 goals for the game, while across halfback Stewart scored 96. More bad than good scores to talk about for the Cats, with Kelly (76), Hawkins (24), Miers (27), Dahlhaus (39), Fort (53) and Clark (46) the Supercoach relevant players who failed to perform. Finishing up, injuries and knocks to Rohan, Dahlhaus and Henry further soured the night.

Taking nothing away from Port Adelaide, they played a cracking game of footy to beat the ladder leaders. Scott Lycett was dominant all night with 24 touch (18 contested), 5 marks, 3 tackles, 9 clearances and 41 hitouts for a massive 180 points. Old-timers Gray and Boak were great all night for their respective scores of 116 and 118, while Houston (110) did more than just blanket Kelly all night, he also picked up 26 touches and 6 tackles. Karl Amon (103) also played well and was in the 100-club, while falling just short were Burton (96), Gray (93) and Rozee and Hartlett (91). Charlie Dixon (75) made a successful return to footy with a 8-touch, 7 mark game, while second-gamer Garner (50) may struggle to hold his spot after a 12-touch game (in saying that I didn’t actually get to watch the game so I may be wrong on the Garner thing).

Question from the game: What’s the Cats issue with the bye?

Supercoach query: Is Robbie Gray in the frame for a top 8 forward?

Collingwood vs Bulldogs

The Pies finished the round with a win to move into second spot. Brodie Grundy was absolutely outstanding with 25 touches, 8 marks, 50 hitouts and 2 goals for a huge 174. Next best was speedy mid Treloar (117) for his 36 touch, 8 tackle game, while Jack Crisp rounded out the triple figure scores for the Pies with 109. A number of Pies fell into the 90’s range including Sidebottom, Roughead, Reid and Phillips. Nothing much else for Collingwood Supercoach wise, with picks such as Pendlebury (71), De Goey (70) and Howe (23) disappointing, although it is worth noting that Howe did have a calf injury that ended his day early.

The Doggies were in this game but ultimately were overrun after halftime. Jack Macrae was massive all day with 42 touches (14 contested), 8 marks, 13 tackles and only 2 clangers for his 148, the best score for a Bulldog on the day. Twin 101’s went to Dunkley and Suckling, while across halfback Daniel’s great season continued with a 35 touch game resulting in 114 Supercoach points. Bontempelli (109), Hunter (89) and Lipinski (85) all racked up over 30 touches of the ball, while Jackson Trengrove did his part for 91 points. Scores drop off from there, so the only other bit of news was a left knee knock to Easton Wood which may see him miss a week or two.

Question from the game: What do Bulldogs supporters want to see for the rest of the season?

Supercoach query: Did Macrae deserve more for his massive statistical game which also ran at 76% DE, on paper it looks like 175+.

  2. Thanks for the write-up Schwarzwalder.

As for Sicily, I think Clarko might be experimenting with him up forward due to the fact that we haven’t cracked the 100 point mark yet this year and are struggling to score.

I personally think he has looked lost up in the forward line and that the experiment has failed. I would think he goes down back this week as we’ll need him against the Eagles talls but then again, who knows. Clarko is a weird yet wonderful specimen!

  3. Thanks Dane. Excellent again.
Think Crisp could be a Top6 DEF bolter from here to season’s end. Gray could be the same up FWD but Rocky’s return worries me too much. Adam and others who got on a couple of weeks ago have nailed that one, but think it might be too late for the rest of us?
Feel Hannebery is likely a car crash waiting to happen. I hope not, but recent history suggests he probably is!
If I had to pick one smokie on each line from here, think I’d go:
    Crisp
    Brayshaw, Angus
    Cameron, Jeremy

Thanks again. Love these write-ups 🙂

    1. Hey allsaints, I will preface this by saying I bought in Gray & Walters 2 weeks ago, so far so good.
In relation to Gray I recall Hinkley saying something after game in China along the lines of Boak and Gray being a great pairing , like brothers , am wondering if injury prone Rocky might be the one shunted forward when he comes back. Plus Gray seems to be over his injury niggles.
