Round Review – Round 6

Written by Motts on July 13 2020

Geelong (11.7.73) defeated Brisbane (6.10.46)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Geelong: Hawkins (3), Menegola, Ablett, Rohan (2)

Brisbane: Rayner (2)

  1. Sam Menegola (152). A couple of really good weeks here for Menegola playing between the midfield and up forward. His 26 touches ran at 92% DE, while he also kicked 2 important goals to turn the game in Geelong’s favour.
  2. Patrick Dangerfield (146). Criminally underpriced for his capabilities coming into the weekend, Danger turned in his best score of the season from his 26 touches (14 contested) and 8 clearance game. Capable of averaging 130 from here on in.
  3. Joel Selwood (143). Game 301 for the Cats champ, pushing his season average to 109. 20 touches (13 contested) with 8 tackles and 6 clearances all contributed to his score.
  4. Lachie Neale (134). Supercoaches highest scoring player continues to soar, this week due to 26 touches (11 contested), 4 tackles and a goal. Most players would be due to have a bad week somewhere but with Neale, it just seems like these scores will keep on rolling, the guy is that good.
  5. Tom Hawkins (120). Rounding out the top 5 is the Cats big forward, who had 5 tackles, 15 touches and 3 goals to give him an equal share of the lead in the Coleman medal.

Other notable scorers: Remember the name Sam Simpson? Last played in round 17, 2018? Well he played his first game in a long time on Thursday night, and smashed it, grabbing a career high score of 112. Game leading disposal getter with 27, throw in 13 contested touches and 5 tackles and that’s a good outing. Currently 123K, and with injuries to their midfield, he’ll be a popular trade option this week. Guthrie (109) has shaved his beard if anyone was wondering, he played a good game through the middle, while down back Tuohy (102) and Blicavs (108) played their roles to perfection. Skipper Zorko returned in fine fashion with 18 touches, 6 tackles and 119 points, but bad news on the injury front for both sides, with McLuggage (74) hurting his shoulder, Robinson (64) getting a corked thigh, Duncan (13) a groin issue and finally Narkle (5) a hamstring.

Disappointment: Plenty to pick from here to be honest from semi-popular players. I’ll try to stay away from injured players this round, so Starcevich (31) gets it instead. Only 8 touches from the young Lion, but he has provided us some decent scores in 2020.

Collingwood (8.11.59) defeated Hawthorn (3.9.27)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Collingwood: Mihocek (4), Hoskin-Elliott (2)

Hawthorn: Zilch

  1. James Sicily (132). Bounced back from last week’s disappointment (44) with a game high score here, courtesy of 28 touches (89% DE), 14 marks and over 450 metres gained.
  2. Tom Mitchell/Adam Treloar (122). A tie here in second place for a couple of ball magnets. Mitchell had 33 disposals and 7 marks, while Treloar had 35 touches (15 contested) and 6 clearances.
  3. Isaac Smith (114). Another good game for the hard running Hawk, finishing with 26 touches, 9 marks and a goal.
  4. Ben McEvoy/Brody Mihocek (110). Another tie here in 4th spot, between a couple of reliable players. McEvoy had some time in the ruck, up forward and down back for his 1 goal, 10 touch, 8 hitout game, while Mihocek was the dominant forward on the night, booting 4 goals amongst his 9 disposals, taking him to the outright lead in the Coleman medal.
  5. Rupert Wills (108). Running around the half-forward flank, Wills produced a career best score courtesy of 5 tackles and 19 touches that ran at 78% DE.

Other notable scorers: A couple of other scores here that finished in the low 100’s, including Adams (104), Moore (102), Grundy (107) and finally Harry Morrison (101). Some debuts in this game, the best score of them being Will Day (92) who had 16 touches and almost 300 metres gained. The others were Morris (26), Bosenvulagi (55) and Kelly (36) who joined the “first kick first goal” club but unfortunately sustained a nasty arm injury late in the game. Quaynor (82) was good in his first game of the year, using his 15 touches at 93% DE, but is awkwardly priced at 261K. To go along with the before mentioned Kelly in the injuries column, was luckless Hawks forward Patton, this time with a hamstring.

Disappointment: Jonathan Ceglar (43) was looking like a good pick to start the year with two 100+ scores in the first three rounds but has since struggled while sharing the ruck duties.

Fremantle (11.7.73) defeated by St Kilda (12.7.79)

Multiple Goal Kickers

St Kilda: Membrey (3), Jones (2)

Fremantle: Taberner, Fyfe, Schulz (2)

  1. Andrew Brayshaw (122). Two hundreds on the trot for Brayshaw, even with Fyfe back this week. 20 touches, 6 marks, 5 tackles and a solid 85% DE, let’s hope this form can continue.
  2. Matt Taberner (120). 2 goals amongst 13 touches and 7 marks for Taberner during this game. Not really an option for Supercoach as this was his season best score, but, is good for a couple of goals a game at the moment for the Dockers.
  3. Callum Wilkie (119). Backed up his career best score of 113 last week with another career best this week, courtesy of 18 touches at 88% DE and a huge 522 metres gained.
  4. Rory Lobb (117). Took control of the rucking duties after Darcy was ruled out during the second quarter and continued on to finish with 16 hitouts, 14 touches and a couple of goals.
  5. Micheal Walters, Taylin Duman (107). A tie here from a couple of Dockers. Walters had 26 touches (12 contested), 8 clearances and unfortunately, 8 clangers which held his score back, while Duman, who was a late in, compiled 12 touches (9 contested) at 91% DE.

Other notable scorers: Once again a couple of low hundreds here, with Luke Ryan (105) using his 14 touches well at 92% DE to get him over the threshold, while for the Saints it was Battle (101) and Jones (104). Injuries to the previously mentioned Darcy and youngster Young (who I of course brought in this week) soured the win for Freo. Owners of Ben Long (also me) cross your fingers, his bump on Darcy likely to be scrutinised. (Cross your fingers and your toes, he’s off to the tribunal).

Disappointment: Dan Butler has had a ripping season but just couldn’t get involved on Saturday, finishing with 6 touches and 40 points.

West Coast (10.7.67) defeated Adelaide (5.4.34)

Multiple Goal Kickers

West Coast: Darling (2)

Adelaide: Zilch

  1. Tim Kelly (140). By far his best game for the Eagles, racking up 24 touches (10 contested), 8 clearances, 4 tackles and 450 metres gained for the prized recruit.
  2. Brodie Smith (124). His best game of the season, Smith had 31 touches and a goal playing off half-back, and along with 662 metres gained, was in the best for the Crows.
  3. Matt Crouch (123). The ball winning mid had 28 touches (10 contested) with 450 metres gained on the day, but only played 67% game time, it could have been so much more!
  4. Jeremy McGovern (117). His best score of the season by far, McGovern had 12 marks and 17 touches, while running at 82% DE. Is good for a couple of hundreds a year but surprisingly has only averaged above 90 once.
  5. Dom Sheed (114). A couple of hundreds in a row for Dom, this one coming on the back of 24 touches, 7 marks, 5 clearances, 445 metres gained and 91% DE.

Other notable scorers: A few more Eagles in triple figures here including Nelson (109), Allen (110), Redden (107) and the underpriced Yeo (105), who is hitting some good form. Tom Doedee (105) is doing a mountain of work down back for the Crows, while Reilly O’Brien (103) took the Supercoach points over Nic Nat (85) after his “broken phone” debacle, finishing with 19 touches, 9 marks and 7 tackles. Andrew MacPherson (76) was good on debut with 9 touches in 74% game time, while Andrew Gaff (67) coped the tag from Keays, and now, with two sub-100 scores in a row, will be underpriced for what he is capable of.

Disappointment: Talking about capable off, Shannon Hurn is far more capable of 10 touches and 39 points, although the ball wasn’t down there too often.

Melbourne (12.8.80) defeated Gold Coast (9.9.63)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Melbourne: Weideman, Fritsch, Petracca (2)

Gold Coast: Rankine (3), Ellis (2)

Max Gawn (153). Another huge score from the Demons skipper, finishing the night with 30 hitouts, 15 disposals, 8 marks and 3 tackles. A safe option for the C every week.

  1. Touk Miller (142). Actually the fourth time this season he has finished in the top 5 now, this one his highest finish. 23 touches (11 contested), 5 tackles and 91% DE for the underrated Sun.
  2. Hugh Greenwood (126). The tackling machine had another 12 tackles on the night, and along with 18 touches, he made it his fourth ton of 2020
  3. Jack Viney (123). His second best score of the year, courtesy of a great game in the middle of the ground that netted 21 touches (12 contested) and 8 tackles.
  4. Izak Rankine (111). A long awaited debut did not disappoint for this man, who kicked 3 great goals, had 12 touches and laid 3 tackles. Will be a very popular trade option this week.

Other notable scorers: Christian Petracca (104) was huge in this game with 25 touches (15 contested), 6 clearances and 2 goals, while his midfield buddy Oliver (106) did his usual thing. Backman Salem (101) played well with 18 touches and a goal, while for the Suns defender Collins used his 15 disposals at 93% to score 107, and Jack Lukosius used his 18 touches at a very good 88% DE as well to score a point less. Tom McDonald had an eye injury and finished early, while Witts had knee soreness late in the game.

Disappointment: If you read this much last year, you’d recall that Brayden Fiorini was a bit of a favourite of mine and I thought he was the next big thing. Well, 2020 hasn’t been his year, this week scoring 40 from his 9 touches, and for that, he “wins” this game’s disappointment score.

Essendon (9.13.67) defeated North Melbourne (7.11.53)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Essendon: Zaharakis (3), Langford (2)

North Melbourne: Zurhaar (2)

  1. Todd Goldstein (129). Yet to go under 100 this season is big Todd, who had 19 touches, 5 marks, 30 hitouts, 6 clearances and a goal on the night to be the leading scorer on the ground.
  2. Jy Simpkin (127). Has turned into a keeper in 2020, and is a big chance to average 120+. 23 touches (16 contested), 7 clearances, 6 tackles and 432 metres gained for the North young gun.
  3. David Zaharakis (126). The veteran Bomber hit the scoreboard with 3 goals, while also picking up 20 disposals to net himself a season high score.
  4. Andrew McGrath (120). Pushes his season average a smidge over 100 with that score. The former number 1 pick had 25 touches through the midfield, while also laying 8 tackles, maybe in 2021 we will see his average go above 115.
  5. Micheal Hurley (112). A strong game in the backline for Hurley, he compiled 16 touches that ran at 75% DE, while also being a driving force for his team, gaining over 300 metres.

Other notable scorers: Only two other scores in triple figures here, with young gun Ridley (111) continuing his rise with another 18 touch, 7 mark game, and Snelling (102), who had 15 touches (11 contested), 8 tackles and a goal on the night. Plenty of players in the 90’s, so quickly they were Dumont, Higgins, Hall, Pittard, Zurhaar, Saad and McDonald Tipungwuti. No injuries as far as I saw but Shiel could cop a week (2 weeks as of Sunday night!) for his high bump.

Disappointment: After smashing out a triple figure score last week, Curtis Taylor (15) just couldn’t get around it, only recording the 4 disposals.

Port Adelaide (9.9.63) defeated GWS (6.10.46)

Multiple Goal Kickers:

Port Adelaide: Zilch

Hawthorn: Cameron (2)

  1. Jeremy Cameron (119). The big forward from GWS kicked 2 goals amongst his 15 touches, while also hauling in 7 marks, which all contributed to him being this games highest scorer.
  2. Nick Haynes (113). Four tons in a row for Haynes, this one on the back of 23 disposals and 8 marks. A must have with his current form, he’s heading for an All-Aus honour and possibly one of the leadership roles within that team.
  3. Kane Farrell (112). A career game here for Kane, who recorded his career high for disposals (19), tackles (6), clearances (2) and the obvious one, Supercoach score.
  4. Lachie Whitfield (111). Despite copping an early tag from Sutcliffe, Whitfield still amassed 25 touches, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal and 457 metres gained in an all-round display.
  5. Dan Houston (109). A return to the backline has helped produce an incline is Dan’s scoring, which this week came on the back of 22 touches, of which 11 were contested.

Other notable scorers: Once again some other players were in the low hundreds here, so quickly they were Powell-Pepper (107), Lycett (108), Jonas (104) and Hopper (103). Popular picks from the Giants including Conglio and Kelly  were in the 90’s, while Toby Greene was alright with 83. Sutcliffe (hamstring) and Lloyd (concussion) both finished their days quite early on.

Disappointment: After a hot start to the year, Brad Ebert has cooled off, this week recording a season low score of 47, while also being put on report for rough conduct.

Richmond (4.10.34) defeated Sydney (3.8.26)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Richmond: Zilch

Sydney: Papley (2)

  1. Callum Mills (173). Three hundreds in a row now for Mills, this score being a career high by a fair margin. Furthermore, his 29 disposals (which included 23 kicks) were also career highs, and that, along with 9 marks and over 500 metres gained, meant he took home the games highest score.
  2. Kamdyn McIntosh (121). Another career best score here, McIntosh had 540 metres gained from his 24 touches, which also included 12 contested possessions.
  3. Jayden Short (118). Another player with a massive amount of metres gained here, which can be attributed to the wet conditions and players just wanting to get the ball forward. All the same, Short had 26 disposals with 9 marks in an impressive display.
  4. Ivan Soldo (117). The recalled Tigers ruckman also returned a career high score in this game, overall winning 21 hitouts, having 8 disposals (7 contested) and 4 clearances.
  5. Nathan Broad (113). Broad used his 16 touches at a very good efficiency of 87% in the wet weather, while also taking 6 marks and laying 3 tackles, all contributing factors to his score.

Other notable scorers: Jake Lloyd (102) had a huge 600 metres gained in this game from 24 disposals, his fifth hundred in a row, while late in Robbie Fox had 13 touches and 4 tackles to net 107 points. For the Tigers, Kane Lambert played an all round game with 22 touches, 7 marks and 6 tackles to register 109, with Nick Vlastuin (103) being the last of the ton scorers due to his 16 touch game. Aarts was okay in his second game with 6 touches, while for Sydney, their two debutants in Stephens (52) and Warner (38) had 11 and 8 disposals respectively. Bad news on the injury front for the Swans, with stars Kennedy and Heeney both sustaining injuries during the game.

Disappointment:  Dustin Martin started the year with a bang, scoring 126, but since then, hasn’t captured his best form, this week being the lowest of the lot, only recording 66 points.

Carlton Western Bulldogs

Multiple Goal Kickers

Carlton: Betts (4), McKay (3), McGovern, Martin, Gibbons (2)

Western Bulldogs: Vandermeer (2)

  1. Jack Macrae (138). The Doggies Mr Reliable had a slow start to the match but warmed into it, finishing with 26 touches (12 contested), with 4 tackles and over 400 metres gained for his side.
  2. Tom Liberatore (120). A solid game in the inside midfield for Libba, picking up 22 touches and 8 clearances while running at 81% DE.
  3. Bailey Smith (119). Another Bulldogs midfielder with a high score. Despite being concussed last week, Smith still picked up 26 touches, 6 tackles and a goal to be one of his sides best players.
  4. Marcus Bontempelli/Jack Martin (116). A tie here between a pair of players that are very important to their teams success. Bont faced a tag from Curnow but powered through, finishing with 22 touches, 6 tackles and a goal, while Martin had 13 touches, 5 tackles and 2 goals for the Blues.
  5. Ed Curnow (115). The Blues midfielder led from the coalface, collecting 19 disposals (12 contested) to go along with 7 clearances and 1 goal.

Other notable scorers: Tim English (105) continued his impressive form with 17 touches and 27 hitouts, while Lachie Hunter made a successful return with 108 Supercoach points on the back of 27 touches and 5 tackles. Matt Gibbons (104) had 15 touches and 2 goals, with Setterfield finishing up the hundred point scorers with his own score of 102. A number of Blues in the 90’s so in no particular order they were Betts, McGovern, Walsh, McKay and the returning Matt Kennedy. Former skipper Marc Murphy hurt his ankle late in the game, while popular picks Cripps (56) and Williamson (47) had injuries during the game that held them back.

Disappointment: Sam Docherty just couldn’t get into the game, finishing with 15 touches, 7 marks and 49 points.

  1. If you told me at the start of the season Jy Simpkin would be averaging 117 and is in the top 5 SC midfielders, would’ve said to never play SuperCoach again… What a gun!

    1. Not sure if you’ve watched any North games (with our form, why would you!) but he’s got a great awareness of where the umpire is so he can just throw the ball instead of handpass it. Not subtly to it, blatant throws.

  2. Bailey Smith looks like a steal next week around 430k the guy is on fire lowest score excluding the ko game is a high 90.

For me he will come in for Taylor & most likely another upgrade in def to get rid of Starc who I need to hold this week

  3. Great stuff. Dane, terrific reviews . A typo: St Kilda defeat St Kilda .
Exciting week ahead after such a dreadful round with so many downgrade options.

  4. I’ll just leave a note with Houston. I think his score, may be more due to him attending 11/18 centre bounces. Got more around the ball for those contested possessions.

    1. The weird thing with that though is that Houston was attending a lot of bounces and stoppages at the start of the season too but just wasn’t getting any of the ball. The couple of Port games I watched Houston was just seagulling around packs. Role change or just a bump in form maybe?

      1. In round 2 he had 7 CBA’s but then none for Rd 3 and 4. Only then getting 2 in round 5.
It might be also due to Port facing tougher opposition so the ball is getting into the backline more often. As he did well in Rd 5 barely attending the centre bounce

  5. A query from a slightly salty Petracca holder:

“Christian Petracca (104) was huge in this game with 25 touches (15 contested), 6 clearances and 2 goals”

Was his %DE super low or something? seems to pump out super stats without the scores.

Otherwise, appreciate your work Dane, always a great read on a Monday

    1. Christian Petracca’s averages quarter by quarter:
      Q1 – 45
      Q2 – 18
      Q3 – 25
      Q4 – 18

      This was from last week
He also had 7 turnovers this week with 64% disposal efficiency which would have cut his score back. Since it was a close game, more points were probably given in the final quarter where he only had 3 disposals

      1. A few frees against too. Two of them in the second half were bloody ridiculous mind you. Oliver’s score was punished by a couple of dodgy calls as well. Yes, I’m a Dees man.

  6. Thanks Dane

Rankine was the standout for mine. The kids a freak.
I can’t wait until he gets a run in the midfield.

Lukosius looks great as well. So composed for a second year player.

    Thanks again Dane

    love ya work.
