Hawthorn vs Collingwood

 

A fighting win from the Hawks who kicked 5 goals in a last quarter comeback. James Sicily played down back and hence, returned a great score of 141, courtesy of his 28 touch (23 kicks), 14 mark game. Luke Bruest (106) was the only other Hawk above 100 points in his and McEvoy’s (85) 200th game. Blake Hardwick (99) and Jarman Impey (90) were next best, while up forward Hanrahan and Lewis kicked 2 goals apiece. 7 Hawks players scored between 80 and 90, but popular picks in Worpel (71) and Henderson (35) returned disappointing scores.

 

The Pies are had their second loss in a row, which may hurt their top 2 chances. Brodie Grundy was fantastic for Supercoaches for 145 points due to his 18 touch, 34 hitout game. Darcy Moore now has 2 tons in a row after his 103, while Tom Phillips was a point behind him after his 31 touch game. Exactly on 100 were both Pendlebury and Treloar, who both played solid games through the midfield, while Crisp finished on 99. Callum Brown continued his impressive season with an 87, while Sidebottom didn’t use the ball too well (60% DE), which held him to 86. First gamer Quaynor was fantastic and seems like a solid downgrade target if we need it, with an 82 on debut, mainly due to his 18 touch, 7 mark game. De Goey and Hoskin-Elliot both kicked 2 goals to be dangerous up forward.

Essendon vs Sydney

 

The Dons came away with a 10 point win on Saturday afternoon, winning a seesawing game. Dylan Shiel (123) was tremendous all day long with 29 touches and 9 tackles, while veteran Zaharakis kicked 3 goals amongst his 22 touches to finish on 112. No other player went over three figures, but Parish (95), McKernan (94) and Hurley (91) were all pretty close. Adam Saad (86) was very good off halfback, while up forward Stringer and McKernan both kicked 2 goals. Popular picks in Clarke (55) and Merrett (59) weren’t so great on the day, but excuse the latter of the two as he had a concussion concern that limited his game time.

 

The surge towards finals took a bad turn for the Swans, although they had some standout performances on the day. For the second week in a row Isaac Heeney racked up plenty of the ball (33 touches), while also hauling in 10 marks for his 134 Supercoach points. Backline buddies Rampe (117) and Lloyd (122) did their usual thing, while former defender, now ruck, Allir Allir (108) also played well. Through the midfield Josh Kennedy had 35 touches (20 contested) for his 118, while Parker (97) was kept to 19 touches by Clarke, but also kicked 2 goals. Other decent enough scores went to the impressive Rowbottom (99), the tough nut Hewett (91) and for the once fully fit, Sam Reid (89). Separate knocks throughout the day to Dawson, Hayward and Blakey will be assessed during the week.

Gold Coast vs Richmond

 

I’ll hand it to the Suns, they played well in the second half, although by that point the damage was well and truly done. David Swallow (118) tried his best with 30 touches (13 contested), 7 clearances and goal to lead his side, while Sam Day (112) played an all around game with 15 touches, 9 marks, 4 tackles, 9 hitouts and a goal to be a solid contributor on the day. Jarrod Witts had 10 clearances amongst his 19 touches to finish in exactly 100, while two points short of him was Lachie Weller. Anthony Miles finished on 95, while Darcy MacPherson (94) looks set to be a popular pick next year after another impressive game that included 24 touches and 2 goals. Nothing else to mention except for the serious looking knee injury to Will Powell that happened early in the contest.

 

A huge win for Richmond to really boost their percentage coming into the run home. Jason Castagna was the star on the day with 5 goals and 143 points to lead all players on the ground. Against his old team, Dion Prestia picked up 28 touches, 9 tackles and a goal for 125, while livewire Shai Bolton had 2 goals himself along with 26 touches for 122. Twin 126’s went to Trent Cotchin and Kane Lambert, who kicked 5 goals between them and had 27 and 24 touches respectively, while youngster Sydney Stack had 106. Surprisingly only Ivan Soldo was the only player in the 90’s, with many scores falling between the 70-90 range for the Tigers. Scores such as Chol (62), Martin (78) and Ellis (80) wouldn’t have pleased many owners, while first gamer Derek E-Smith was fantastic with 19 touches. Lastly, big forward Tom Lynch kicked 3 goals against his former team.

 

Question for the game: Did anyone else think this was headed for a 150 point smacking?

Adelaide vs Port Adelaide

 

A second half fade out pushed Adelaide to eighth on the ladder, after being in top 4 contention just a few weeks back. Daniel Talia had many intercept possessions among his 14 touches, and didn’t waste a single touch (100% DE) to have the highest Crows score on the day with 114. Next best was ball-magnet Matt Crouch on 107, and after that Hugh Greenwood on 103. Backline pair Laird and Smith both picked up plenty of touches (25 each) to finish on 98 and 97, put popular picks in O’Brien (77) and Sloane (84) were disappointments on the night. Concerns throughout the night were injuries to Talia (ankle), Keath (lower leg) and Gallucci (concussion).

 

While Adelaide faded out, Port locked in for the second half, gaining valuable percentage to move up to 7th on the ladder. Almost too many good scores to look at in this game, so I’ll start with the showdown medalist, Robbie Gray. The Power star had 35 touches (16 contested) and 10 clearances to finish on 110, a point above both the in-form Lycett and the skipper Wines, while a further point behind them was Burton. Returning star Justin Westhoff kept up his SANFL form with 23 touches (16 kicks), along with 16 marks and a goal to have the highest score on the night with 125, while fellow SANFL call up Rockliff was huge with 36 touches, 11 marks and 5 tackles but had a 53 point difference between his Dreamteam score and Supercoach score (150 DT – 97 SC). Darcy Byrne-Jones was fantastic across halfback with 31 touches and 11 marks to finish on 121, while players in Clurey (95), Amon (89), S.Gray (92) and Ebert (88) were not far off. Rozee, Howard and Sam Gray kicked 2 goals each, while Ebert had 3. To anyone who missed the weekends action, premium forward Travis Boak was a late out.

Western Bulldogs vs Geelong

 

The Bulldogs continued their hot form with a 16 point win on Saturday night. For the second week in a row Marcus Bontempelli was dominant, finishing with 27 touches (17 contested), 6 tackles and a goal to net 146 points, while the next best was fellow mid Hunter on 132. Premium Jack Macrae did his usual thing with 34 touches and 116 points, Josh Dunkley was also his usual self with 9 tackles and 27 touches for 103 and Aaron Naughton (107) gave more promising signs that his usual self will continue hauling in marks and kicking goals (4 of them). Toby McLean was slated to get more midfield time and he delivered with 23 touches (16 handballs) to finish on 101, while ten points below him were both Smith and Lloyd, who both kicked important goals on the night. While not Supercoach relevant, Taylor Duryea (96) had a good game that is worth noting, but there’s not much else from there.

 

The Cats fell to their 3rd loss on the season, but still sit a game clear on top of the ladder. Patrick Dangerfield was under an injury cloud but performed remarkably to finish on 146, courtesy of 23 touches (16 contested), 6 marks, 7 tackles and 2 goals. Backline duo Stewart (24 touches, 10 marks), and Tuohy (30 touches) finished on 103 and 115 respectively, while tall guys Stanley (105) and Taylor (112) were also in three figures. Mark Blicavs (98) did a bit of everything on the night (20 touches, 8 hitouts, 4 tackles), while Jordan Clark (87) continued his impressive debut season. Many popular picks in Kelly (74), Duncan (58), Hawkins (52) and Miers (19) were all disappointments, while throughout the night Geelong had many injury concerns with Selwood, Dahlhaus, Bews and Kolodjashnij all needing attention.

West Coast vs Fremantle

 

Derby number 50 did not go the way Fremantle would have hoped, and despite bad conditions, 2 goals 19 is a very bad return. Only Darcy Tucker (107) hit the ton, due to his 29 touch game, while the next best was Walters on 95 for his 23 touch, 5 tackle, 1 goal game. Unwanted scores came from Mundy (84), Fyfe (76), Lobb (58), Ryan (67) and Logue (50). Overall only 3 players scored above 85 (Crowden on 86 had a nice game with 16 touches, with 13 of those being contested), while 17 of the 22 Fremantle players finished between 50-85 points. One of the two who fell below that bracket was returning big man Sandilands (36), who only played 55% game time, but seeing the veteran back out there was a welcome sight in my eyes. Colyer, Fyfe and Switkowski all had their own injury concerns throughout the game.

 

For the Eagles, it was a big percentage boosting win who almost had their best team of the year on the park (Kennedy being a late out). Brad Sheppard (131) won the medal for best on ground, due to his 25 touch, 7 mark, 11 rebounds from 50 game. Next best was wingman Masten, who had 25 touches and a goal for his 120, while fellow midfielders Shuey (109) and Gaff (106) both performed well. At either end of the ground Hurn (101) and Darling (100) both played their part, while Cripps (99), Hickey (97), Sheed (94) and McGovern (91) were not far off the 100-club. Cripps, Darling and Jarrod Cameron all kicked 4 goals each, and Tom Barrass (76) made a successful return to senior football.

Carlton vs Melbourne

 

A last quarter burst from the Blues didn’t eventuate in a win for the second week in a row, losing a nail biter by 5 points. Matthew Kruezer was massive on the day with 142 points, courtesy of 17 touches (9 clearances) and 24 hitouts, while Ed Curnow (111) reaped the rewards of his ruckmans good work. Jack Silvagni had what was probably the best game of his career with 3 goals, 10 marks and 18 touches to finish on 109. Recruit and popular early season pick Newman scored 107, while Murphy fell a point short of 100. Rookies Walsh (86) and Setterfield (74) continued their good form, with the latter kicking big goals in the context of the game. Nothing much else to mention for the Blues Supercoach wise, with many players scoring 70 or below, while Jacob Wietering had a badly broken nose.

 

A narrow win for the Demons in what was a great game of footy. Tom McDonald was the star on the day kicking 6 goals, having 20 touches and 9 marks for his 139, but did finish the day with a knee concern. Clayton Oliver (158) still upstaged his score though, due to his important touches late as well as 11 tackles, while late in Pruess (140) did his chances of keeping his spot no harm with 14 touches and 44 hitouts. A popular pick next year will be James Harmes (119), who continued his great season, while a popular pick last year in Fritsch (108), had 26 touches and 10 marks. Christian Petracca (103) and Jayden Hunt (83) both kicked 3 goals, with the latter kicking the winner on the day. Twin 96’s went to Viney and Frost, while Salem wasn’t terrible with 87. First-gamer Dunkley (58) was decent on debut with 11 touches and 5 tackles, but where one season starts, another potentially ended with Hore (3) breaking his collarbone.

North Melbourne vs St Kilda

 

Another win for North who move to 4-1 under Rhyce Shaw. Ruckman Todd Goldstein was fantastic with 16 touches, 6 tackles and 39 touches to finish on 148 points, while his fellow veteran Ziebell kept his great form going with a 24 touch (15 contested), 7 tackles and 2 goals to pull in 126 points. A single point behind him was Jy Simpkin, who had the best game of his career, with 36 touches (21 contested), 9 clearances and 125 points. Housemates Zuhaar (112) and Larkey (93) both kicked 5 goals, while Polec/Tarrant (90) and Anderson/Cunnington (89) all had decent enough games. Separate knocks throughout the day to Wood and McDonald may cause some selection issues.

 

The Saints in all honesty, played very good football for patches of this game, but they were few and far between. Josh Bruce (138) equaled his career best with 6 goals from 17 touches, while Rowan Marshall (126) kept his awesome form going with a 20 touches (16 contested), 31 hitouts and a goal. Jack Billings (144) also had a career day with 35 touches, as did Jack Steele who had as many tackles (18) as he had possessions to net 109 points. Luke Dunstan (116) and Jack Newnes (96) both returned good scores, but after that no one went above 85. Hind will make money but 46 wasn’t needed, while young Josh Battle (4) had a knee issue early in the day.

GWS vs Brisbane

 

A massive win in the context of the season for Brisbane, who came away from enemy territory win a 20 point win. Lachie Neale led from the front with 31 touches and a goal for 151 points to finish the round on a high for his owners. Fellow recruit Lincoln McCarthy was next best on 137, courtesy of his 3 goals, 22 touch game, while the only other Lion in triple figures was Martin on 103. Andrews, Zorko and McLuggage were all in the 90’s, while Cameron kicked 2 goals in his All-Aus hunt. Lastly, recruit Marcus Adams made his return to senior footy, so a big congrats to him.

 

The loss puts GWS’s top 4 chances in doubt, but there’s plenty of the season remaining. Despite the loss, they still returned some great scores, with premium players in Congilio and Williams finishing the round off nicely. The former had 34 touches and 11 tackles to go along with 9 clearances for his 158, while the latter used 21 of his 28 touches with his boot to score 112. Twin 122’s went to recalled ruckman Simpson, and Himmelberg, who kicked 4 goals to lead the Giants forward line. Josh Kelly (106) was his usual constructive self, but from there scores drop off with no one else getting into the 90’s. Bad scores came from popular picks in Hately (40) and Cameron (64).
