Such Is Life – MJ’s Team Unveiling

Written by MJ on March 20 2013

Here it is as it stands, no doubt a few more tweaks ahead, but this is more or less how the team will run out for Round 1.

Such Is Life 2013

Defence: What will be most striking is that I have gone with 4 rookies on field. This is something I have not seen anywhere else, but with the wealth of quality defensive new boys and the number of mature aged bodies in Goodes, Terlich and Stevensen who have proved they can score well in the NAB Cup, I’m content with the decision. Every season it seems the backline is the easiest to find cheap, quality upgrade targets midseason and is often difficult to pick the top defenders from the outset.

Midfield: Spent big on M1-M4 and I reckon these guys will be in the top half a dozen mids by the years’ end. Shuey is my POD here, ousting Nat Fyfe as I just can’t be burnt by that shoulder again. Just got a feeling the young gun will jump into the 110+ average this season, in an Eagles side primed to finish well inside the top 4. 7 scores of 120+ in 2012 show he has what it takes to go big. If he can find those scores consistently I’ll be laughing. Pretty confident these mid rookies are the pick of the bunch.

Rucks: Dean Cox has been rock solid in all my preseason drafts. The Berger has been in and out on injury news, but hoping he’s fit to go for Round 1. Last 7 rounds of 2011 he averaged 121.5! Currie and Blicavs on the bench should provide enough support for him nonetheless.

Forwards: Stacked the forwards with premiums due to the lack of quality rookies available. Stevie J will be covered by Macaffer in Rd1. Will basically be a set and forget line with the idea of upgrading Karnezis to Dale Thomas if all goes to plan. I’m expecting Thomas to start slow and be a straight swap for the young Lion about round 6 or 7 at about $420k.

Alright guys, go ahead, tear it to shreads and let me pick up the pieces in the next few days.

  1. Very nice team MJ!!!! similar to mine also … You’ve effectively got Martin and F5 and Ive got Heppell at B3…Only structural difference which makes sense if you think about it if all the rookies are in defence…..Whats the difference ?? Same amount of prems….Clever
Structure other than above and personnel almost the same.. ( ive taken the plunge on avatar at M5)

  2. Nice side MJ
Only critism ive got is i think your backline is to weak which ya already pointed out but i think you really need that 3rd premo other than that looks good…
    Goodluck for the season

  3. Got to risk it to take the biscuit I guess! That backline very iffy for me. I would probably go with only one of Zorko and Rockliff and go LeCras or even Hurley – both $200K cheaper

Shuey is great but Fyfe for me. He’s $50K cheaper as well and can hit the big scores more consistently.

  4. Experience tells me that picking the right rookies from the outset is the #1 key to SuperCoach success. If that means having 4 on-field rookies in defence rather than 2 in defence and 2 questionable ones in attack, then so be it. It’s something I’ve never run with before, but I feel this season is an anomaly, where it makes no sense to pick forward rookies apart from Macaffer (and Rowe purely for the RUC/FWD swing).

  5. Just a few thoughts running through my mind at the moment, hesitant to trust anything right now.
These questions can probably be directed at many teams floating around at the moment.

    Defenders
    – How is Goddard going to fair at a new team?
    – Are these rookies destined to sit on the bench?

    Midfield
    – Gary Ablett, is he going to boom out the gate? Worth $740.5k?
    – You have interestingly avoided picking up Cotchin.
    – Rookies here also concern me with the looming vest.

    Ruck
    – Cox is getting a little old, are there better options?
    – Will Leuenberger be set for R1?
    – Who the hell is Blicavs?

    Forwards
    – Franklin is he all hes cracked up to be? Burned me slightly in years past.
    – $535k for Zorko a 2nd year rookie?
    – Johnson, isn’t he on the bench for Round 1?
    – Martin, will he finally show us that talked up potential from last year?

  8. After getting over the draft picking and travelling later back to it.
Very different MJ, I think there is a bit of a downside picking so many back rookies. You need to see where you are going to generate the most cash from. Normally these come from Mid Rookies as their scoring potential is higher. Look at Brandon Ellis last year did not much go over 250,000 then takes the likes of Magner hit over 300,000 pretty quickly. WIth three rounds think it is going to be harder for you to upgrade and take longer than everyone else.

  9. I am liking it MJ…

I agree whole heartedly with the structure I have decided to go with 3 premiums in defence though and hope that Mcaffer is solid enough at F6. The one thing I love about having plenty of upgrades in defence is gives you plenty of time to work out which ones are scoring well as defenders are fickle creatures.

  10. Nice side mate. Mine is similiar but i have one less premium in the forward line but one extra in the back. Like it.

  11. Great side, i’ve also stacked my foward line as i think it’s the way to go.have heppell down back that is different to your side and my foward line not as strong. well done for coming up with something different.

  12. Only thing I’m mulling over now is whether Vlastuin and Wines are worth the extra combined $100k. For example:
    Vlastuin > Colquhoun
    Wines > Matt Jones
allows a Shuey > Swan upgrade!
    Opinions?

  13. Hi everyone,

  14. I think Wines is definitely worth it, he’s a gun. Not so sure about Vlastuin though. I wouldn’t upgrade Shuey, not just because I have him in my side too, but it’s good to go with someone a little different, Swans a bit of a boring safe option.

  15. MJ, you’re a star… great side!

Not in a position to critique, but a point of note is the extra rookies you’re running in defence as opposed to up forward, but purely a strategic move. So not suggesting you change it.

  16. I like it mate. I’m really liking the fact you have so many young ones on the field in the back. I was considering it but didn’t have the balls to do it. My concern is spending so much on shuey. I still don’t think he can cop a hard tag and goes missing in big games, but I hope he kills it this year. Luey is also a risk IMO. But could pay of.

  17. I like it, selecting the forward rookies does appear to be more difficult. What happened to Joe Daniher? Would have been in 95% of teams 5 weeks ago.

  18. Love the back line mate. Have tried this structure myself but I think there is too big a chance Docherty won’t play. If there was one more clear rookie for D8 I’d be setup exactly the same. Really, really good team mate.

Wines will be our No1 clearance player come season end. Will play 16+ games and I’m that bullish about him, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to hope for a 85-90 avg from him. Really excited about him.

  19. From what I gather Stevenson & Heath are vying for the same spot, don’t quote me on that though. And Colquohon, however talented he may be, is still a skinny kid for the most part.

I have doubts over Vlastuin too, seems like a prime vest candidate for me, after seeing how Hardwick handled Ellis & Morris last year, it would make sense if he handled him the same. I think you need full games out of an 160k rookie to generate the desired cash. He possibly could be a good slow burner of that’s what your after.

We have 3 players different across the board. So at least I know I’m on the right track.

Once again really good team mate.

  20. Solid MJ with a unique take on the defenders… I think that’s where the value lies in the rookies this year but I feel you’re a premium short if the mature age boys don’t click early on… good risk vs reward conundrum there!

I like your take on Stevie J and ‘The Lot’ but there are 30 trades this year… and Bartel is right there if you were looking for some value out of the cattery in the forwards from the get go. See how Matty goes in the magoos this weekend… if he gets through 3 quarters strongly then he’d have to be seriously considered!

Maybe consider Corr of the Giants instead of Docherty early on… getting a vest on a 6 man bench in the NAB Cup GF doesn’t bode well for the young Lion early doors! Corr could be the Bugg of 2013?
