The Ressies Recap – Rd 11

Written by on June 7 2018

Apologies for the tardiness of this post – one of the drawbacks of living north of the border is that I have to juggle Supercoach with Origin duties!

If there’s anyone I haven’t mentioned that you’d like to hear about, please let me know in the comments.

FREMANTLE: A hard-fought win over Claremont produced a couple of notable performances. Enigmatic forward Brandon Matera (311K fwd) had 20 touches and kicked three goals to be among the best on ground, while reserve big man Lloyd Meek (117K ruc) relished his opportunity in the absence of the promoted Apeness, compiling 32 hitouts and 15 possessions. Harley Bennell (254K fwd) watch: left the field early with “calf tightness”.

WEST COAST: Brayden Ainsworth (117K mid) has had an outstanding rookie season, and my bold call is that he would have a Rising Star nod by now if he were at a less successful club. A team-high 27 possessions for the 32nd pick in last year’s draft in the cross-town derby.

ADELAIDE had the bye.

PORT ADELAIDE: The Magpies were well beaten by South Adelaide, but Dom Barry (182K mid) put his hand up for a recall with a game-high 29 disposals. Jasper Pittard (434K def) can’t be far off after another 26 touches, and Lindsay Thomas (295K fwd) kicked four goals.

SYDNEY: I know I mention him every week, so I promise I’ll stop doing that… as soon as he stops dominating the NEAFL! The beast that is Darcy Cameron (124K ruc) had 54 hitouts, 11 marks and 17 possessions. James Rose (127K fwd) had a big game but was inaccurate in front of the sticks, kicking 1.4.

GWS: The omitted Jeremy Finlayson (335K def/mid) with 24 possessions, as well as key defender Lachie Keeffe (158K def/fwd), were named among the Giants’ best in their victory over the NT Thunder.

BRISBANE: A sudden glut of injuries has knocked the Lions twos around, and they went down to Aspley in a low-scoring battle. Impressive youngster Corey Lyons (124K mid) was their best, amassing 31 disposals.

GOLD COAST: The Suns’ advertisement for a mid-season trade period is named Michael Barlow (463K mid/fwd), who racked up another lazy 41 possessions but still can’t crack the senior squad. Brayden Crossley (152K ruc) dominated with five goals; encouraging news for those who have him on their benches for bye coverage!

CARLTON: The industrious Nick Graham (382K fwd/mid) was outstanding again, managing 35 possessions in a losing side, while the experienced Aaron Mullett (310K def) had 25 touches.

FOOTSCRAY: Another big game from Tom Campbell (344K ruc) with 41 hitouts, but who knows what his chances of a promotion are? Josh Dunkley (382K fwd) kicked a couple of goals.

RICHMOND: Anthony Miles (311K mid) is the Tom Mitchell of the VFL, and he did it again with a ridiculous 44 possession, 3 goal effort against the Pies. Sam Lloyd (390K fwd) had another 31 disposals and two goals, but it’s tough to get into that Tigers team right now!

NORTH MELBOURNE: I’ll call it now: Braydon Preuss (347K ruc) will either be traded or find himself consistently playing AFL by the end of this year. 75 hitouts! Mitch Hibberd (169K def) had 34 possessions, while the demoted Ryan Clarke (341K def) led all players with 36 touches.

COLLINGWOOD: The big-bodied Rupert Wills (224K mid) was terrific with 36 possessions in a losing cause. Sam Murray (334K def) had 21 disposals, but only one tackle.

GEELONG: Ryan Gardner (124K def) feasted on a struggling Blues outfit, botting six goals in the Cats’ 70 point win. George Horlin-Smith (327K mid) led all ball-winners with 30 disposals.

CASEY (Melbourne): It’s a tough gig for aspiring Scorpions right now, although injury has opened the door somewhat. The ever-reliable Cam Pedersen (472K ruc/fwd) is at the front of the queue, collecting 18 disposals and kicking four goals. Joel Smith (153K def/mid) is one to keep an eye out for also, as he managed 17 possessions.

BOX HILL HAWKS: Marc Pittonet (130K ruc) was massive in more ways than one, recording 60 hitouts, while David Mirra (266K def) had 19 touches.

SANDRINGHAM (St Kilda): Nicholas Coffield (250K def/mid) was very good with a team-high 31 disposals, and should expect a senior recall this weekend. David Armitage (271K mid) was prolific again, but my gut says he will struggle to break back into the AFL ranks this year.

ESSENDON: Noted ball-magnet Dylan Clarke (124K mid/fwd) had a relatively quiet one against the Dogs; only 20 touches and 8 tackles! Aaron Francis (220K def/fwd) is putting himself into the mix again, managing 17 possessions and a goal.

  1. Whilst Preuss is dominating in the reserves Goldy’s getting back to his best and Maj is doing a good job as a defender and 2nd string ruck. Up forward we’ve got a great mix with Brown, Waite, Wood and Ziebell. Just can’t see Preuss getting a gig unless there’s a few injuries.

    1. Agreed, RB. But he’s definitely being wasted playing in the twos. Surely there’s a club out there that could use a dominant ruckman *cough Bulldogs cough*

      1. How high of a draft pick would North demand for him? I’d love to see him in navy blue.

  2. great write-up Chillo. Thanks. Here’s to Dom Barry getting the call so I can save those trades for impending carnage!
