Tips for First Year Players Part 1

Written by Motts on March 29 2010

Mondays aren’t so hard to get out of bed for when the footy season has started. How did everybody go on the weekend? I ended up with a 2265 which to be honest I’m a little disappointed with given the shabby performances of my ruck division. But at least I don’t have D Hille. SuperCoaches with him in their team will be sweating on the outcome of his report on Friday night. Personally I think he’ll get 2.

This is the first of a series of tips for players who may be new to the game. It will help you in the long run. Today’s tips are:

1) Try not to make any trades in the first 3 rounds. Players values will not alter until R3 so unless you have a guy who is seriously injured (Brett Harvey last year comes to mind) try to stick with what you’ve got.

2) If you do want to make a trade (and this applies for the whole season), don’t pull the trigger at least until you know the teams for the upcoming round. I call this the Josh Gibson rule after I traded him into my team a couple of years ago on a Tuesday and then found out the following day that he’d fallen over in the bathroom, given himself concussion, and was now going to be out for a month or two.

Anyone else have any helpful advice that we can pass on to SuperCoach rookies?

  1. If want to make a trade try looking for a “Cash Cow” cos this could be very handy when players value change.

  2. In response to ‘at least I don’t have Hille’ this happened to me on the weekend:
Hille awards a free kick (50m) – Ouch
Jimmy Bartel was awarded said free kick (My Capt, double Points – YAY)
Hille reported for charging – OUCH…
3 seconds of topsy turvy for me!!

  3. But I’m addicted to trades after making 500 free trades last week. How can I satisfy my addiction without breaking Rule 1.

I was thinking of possibly trading a player before R3 who was going to go down ALOT in price for a player who would go up ALOT in price. Are trades too valuable for this be an option?

      1. Say for example Clark->Sandilands, Gia -> Higgins
How quickly do values go down based on the first 3 rounds?

Clark is valued at 489K (101.9 avg) – If he gets another 50 for the next 2 weeks how much will his value drop based on an avg of 50-60.

The dogs play Richmond next week so you would expect a good score from Gia. But if he dosnt score well?

          1. Thanks Paul, didn’t know that.

But regardless of the player, do you think the theory is crazy or useful under certain circumstances.

I’m used to playing soccer fantasy games where form is everything and trades are not as valued. Just trying to get my head around the best strategy to go with.

      2. There is also the potential to save a trade by doing this.

I have enough money in the bank to upgrade. When the values change I may not and may have to sell a rookie to git rid of the underperforming players.

        1. Is worth a trade though, you only have 20 for the season and with injuries coming from who knows where, trading a player for 1 bad match might just bite back in the final rounds.

          0

          0
          1. Without a doubt, wait till teams are announced in Round 3. That’s the earliest you’d want to trade in my books. If you’re looking at Clark’s score at that point and you think he’s gonna take a dive then yerp you may want to get rid of him as you say to actually save a trade. I think you’d be mad to do anything now though. And, I think Clark will play just about every game and perform at about 90+, so you gotta think do you REALLY want to trade him?

There is a complicated formula they use to work out if someone’s value will drop – they need to get a below a certain threshold based on their value. You can look it up if you’re keen.

  4. Isn’t there also the argument that now *is* the time to trade, with the possibility of bringing in 6 players for big profit before the first money shift.

Requires fortitude to hold you trades for a while after that, but does give you a pretty valuable team when done right.

heath shaw, please tell me this is OK.or not.

    1. Heater is a great get but at what expense at this stage of the game. Trades are gold and should not be thrown away. What happenes if Heater has an accident on the track this week. Could prove to be fine but at the cost of a potentially unecessary trade. JMac could come good over the next two and you will kick yourself for the early jump. Your scores from round 1 really dont matter if all you doing is hoping to win the flag against your mates. Come finals time you want options rather than running out with holes in your squad.

  6. Another good tip is hold off trading until teams are announced for the week, nothing worse than trading in a doughnut.

  7. I was pretty happy with 2145. I had gumbleton and hille so it was as bad as an outcome as i thought.

    I was wondering if i should trade out tippett/gray [fwd’s] -> medhurst
and Gram -> For one of the cash cows [Hunt/Ladson/Malceski]
    and Hille->Sandliands [Most likely]

What does everyone think of this and should i hold of the trades until round 3? How many trades left should i go into the season with?

  8. Remember guys, its only Round 1. Just coz a player had a bad week doesnt mean they wont turn it around this week. Only trade if you have injuries or suspensions and cant cover it on your bench, I made the mistake of trading earlier last year and went from ranking: 600 to ranking 50000 by the end of the year because I ran out of trades by Round 12

    1. By the way if it wasnt for me having Gumbleton and Hille, and I didnt have Barlow on the bench I would have been ranked #1 for the week

    1. Except he wouldn;t be able to afford Hille -> Sandilands if he doesn’t trade in medhurst/other for a cash cow.
Personally I have Hille, and will be keeping him for a few more weeks rather than trade out two trades to upgrade him to Sandilands.
If he does get suspended I will bring Warnock on the ground for a couple of weeks.
I know my cash cows are going to give me enough for me to upgrade Hille to Jolly/Seaby at worst if he doesn’t rise in price himself for me to afford Sandialnds/Cox.

      1. Thanks for the advice. Ill have to see if Gray will be injured for a few weeks will most likely downgrade him to Medhurst. I don’t have another rookie to cover for him [Gumbleton doesn’t count]

  9. People need to clam down and study the form til Thursday’s lockout. Look at injuries list, results from VFA matches i.e McVeigh 48 touches, Tribunal outcomes and general club news, where you can get from newpapers or go to http://www.afl.com.au/ for the latest.

  10. 1st yr players get your big cash cows now if you don’t have em – you know who they are by now. Personally Iooks like I only need to get rid of 2 bad performers- Gumby & J Trengrove but will wait 1 more week to see how they score & their potential replacements.

Score 2220 with 1 player down.

Motts – what did your league of Champion Supercoches average?

hille, hall and dal santo didnt go that well but they should imrove hopefully 🙂

  12. 2322 for my first ever week of supercoach…pretty pleased despite hille and tippet performances. Survived ok without the lil master for one week

  13. I’m curious about what constitutes a par score in this game. Are we talking 1800? 2000? 2200? I noticed that the winning score this week was about 2600. Is it possible to maintain an average like that over a season?

    0

    1. Hey Happy
A par score is going to be different for everybody. Personally I’ve always considered it in SC to be around 2100.
A 2600 average is very very hard to maintain. I think you’ll find the winners of the comp will average somewhere around the 2350 – 2400 mark.

  14. wanting to trade gia for Betts and Farmer for Malceski … i know i shouldnt use my trades now .. BUT … Motts do u think Gia is a keeper? Farmer was TERRIBLE!

    1. I wouldn’t have him in my team if I thought I was going to trade him away in only R2. Give all players at least another week before you start making decisions on them. The Dogs play Richmond and the Blues play Brisbane – that could change markedly how you feel about both Gia and Betts.

      1. Outstanding news! Had already accepted that he would be out for two! Really hoping Hille can play every week as I think he will just get better and better.

  15. If a mid rookie such as Trengove has 3 “ehh” games maybe average say 50s. Is it worth trading them out with somebody like Banner or Shuey if there price may rise higher if they score say 80’s for the 3 first rounds? Or worth sticking it out and hope he improves?

    1. This is the one situation where I think the rule doesn’t apply. If, by some massive oversight on your part, you haven’t got Barlow then yes I’d trade a low performer for him after the next round.

      1. ohhh no i definatly already have barlow. But maybe he and martin might take the field next week instead of tregove

  16. got 2098 this week 🙁
Dissapointed in MacDonald, Gram, LeCras, Warren, Ball, Hall and bloody TIPPETT! but having said that i think theyre all keepers except for and Hall Warren. Might trade Warren for Yarran and Hall for Zieball. Not now obviously but ill their D-Day comes after rd 3.
    Thoughts on my future decisions?

  17. Coming into round 2. If for some reason when picking you picked your side for round 1 you picked a couple of fwd rookies who didn’t play (because you couldn’t get online due to work) ie. Podsiadly & Rohan. If both these players dont get named in round 2 would you be swapping them out for the likes of say Hitchcock &/or Peterson? Especially if you have Gray in the fwd line who doesn’t look like will be playing… Which hurt me last round having Gray a non-scorer and no emergency who played. Still managed 2150 with Trengove, Hall, Hille & Tippet not playing well… and a big fat zero from Gray lol

  18. Thanks Motts. Wonderful site. Helps Heaps

Just that I had my team all sorted, then had a panic attack when the teams were listed last week and one of my starters was not playing. Just before deadline I changed my team and some how left out Barlow and put in McGlynn!!

    Desperate to put Barlow back!
