Trade Talk Rd2

Written by Schwarzwalder on March 27 2017

Normally we’d recommend against any trading this week but if you have Nick Riewoldt or Joel Smith then you have good reason to explore your options. Which direction are you headed? Any trades floating around that noggin of yours?

** A poll will be up shortly regarding N.Riewoldt and his possible replacements…….

    1. So all your rookies are top notch and there are no value mid pricers you are missing? You legend……. whats your ranking?>

    2. just wanted to offer some food for thought here as i have seen a lot of questions on roo with nothing sticking out in the forward line as a replacement for some people.

if you missed nankervis or steele and consider them as possible keepers, and you also have a smith from melbourne or EVW if he is not named again, you could downgrade roo to nank/steele and up your def rookie to a marchbank/mackie/thuoy/z jones type. Marchbank in particular scored well in a losing team and has great job security. You will bank some cash, likely score a similar output to roo & rookie.

      1. This is exactly what I am considering. I also have Otten who is rumoured to be out this week, so if I don’t trade that leaves me with no def cover and Mitch Hibberd at D6 – gross!
        Riewoldt and Smith out
        Nankervis and Marchbank/McGrath in

  1. I am planning to downgrade N. Riewoldt to a FWD rookie ( not keen on a mid pricer, even though Steele is tempting )
Will bring a promo in defense.

  2. Yeah no trades this week, need another week to look at the rookies.

I don’t have Hannan so perhaps he could be swapped in for Smith next week (via links)

    1. This week upgraded David Swallow to Marc Murphy and Downgraded Jack Martin to Andrew McGrath. While that looks like chasing points it should allow me to upgrade a terrible rookie (M Hibberd) come round 6. Next week likely ins before the crucial round three are two of Dan Butler, Castagna or Hannan or W Hoskin-Elliot Making way are either J Pickett, J Bowles, B Eddy or R Shoenmakers.

  3. top of the morning lads.. first post this year, second season player..

I’ve got Joel Smith in D, was thinking of getting Zac Jones for him this week, or do I sit tight??
    T/U get Jones
T/D only 1 week in, patience son

  4. I hate trading so early but gone Pickett to hannan mature player playin against Carlton aswel should score wel make more coin, what’s the go with Hannebery is he injured or what want serious answers asap

    1. I noticed Hanners heat map on the weekend. Was playing hf. I don’t know whether he’d copped a knock or just lack of fitness. There’s no way he’ll stay there though. Gun gotta stick with him

  5. living in Sydney I get to see all the Swans and Giants games, I didn’t see Hanners get injured Anthony, I think he was just short of a gallop.. even so he was disappointing, but he wasn’t alone.. expect him to bounce back.. got to hold mate, at least another week, I’m sure he will bounce back for you..

  6. Is it worth trading out rookies with uncertain JS who scored poorly in round 1 (Hibberd, Eddy) for rookies who scored well and with seemingly more secure positions (Insert names here) THIS week? Or is there no such thing as a secure rookie this week?

    2

  7. Rookies performed terribly this week and from what I saw there will be little improvement next week i.e. Hibberd, Taranto, Pickett, Eddy etc. Only shining light was Butler. As need a 3rd trade next week to correct this was thinking of going a Taranto to a Houston/Hannan and using the extra cash to upgrade Joel Smith to Marchbank, ultimately killing two birds with the one stone.

    T/U – Go for it
T/D – Sit on if for a week

  8. Im really happy with my premo / mid price picks dahl and beams the only ones to score under 100.
My concern is with rookies and cash generation as I had 5 score 50 or under and 3 score 30 or under.
Based on JLT form I stayed away from McGrath, Bowes and Ainsworth but all three probably have better job security than Florent, Taranto, Hibberd etc so I may need to re-assess after this round.
I also dont have Butler, SPS or Hannan in my team.

  9. Due to Swallow being a late withdrawal structural changes were necessary which forced Burgoyne and Witts into the side just before lockout Saturday night. With N Riewoldt missing anywhere from the next week to 6 weeks should I downgrade him to M Hannan allowing Strandica to be upgraded to Goldy and Witts moved to the bench (as a cash generating option). Or an alternative is to keep Riewoldt, bring Butler on field and trade S Burgoyne and J Witts for A McGrath and T Goldstein.

TU: Out: N Riewoldt, L Strandica, In: M Hannan and T Goldstein
TD: Out: S Burgoyne, J Witts, In: A McGrath and T Goldstein

  10. I’ve got Riewoldt and not sure of who to trade him to. Could Nankervis become a premium? I don’t have him but am wary that trading to him loses me a premium overall which I don’t like. But since I have buddy and don’t want Lynch before round 9 I don’t know who to trust. Kennedy?

    T/U: Roo to Nank
    T/D: Roo to Kennedy

Comment if you’ve got a better idea, I’d appreciate it!

    27

    20
  11. Unfortunately I’ve got both Roo and Smith. I’m thinking of going Roo to WHE (if he’s out for 3 or more) and Smith to T. Adams.

That will push Marchbank to D5 (Doch, Laird and Howe already in) and leave me with Dahlhaus, Nank, Steele, WHE, Taranto and Hannan/Eddy/Butler in the forwards.

    TU: Good Idea
TD: Run with the extra DEF rookie and replace Roo with Buddy.

    22

    8
  12. I have rookie J Smith. So basically now that he is out injured he will not make any cash for my team and my bench in defence is vulnerable considering so many rookies have poor job security. Clearly he has to go but I dislike using a trade on a rookie after only one round. I appreciate any advice on whether to hold of fold.

T/U Trade him now to make some early cash
T/D Sit tight until better rookie options emerge.

    5

    19
    1. I’m going to put Otten as emergency, if he scores well I’ll take his score using J Smith on field, if he doesn’t score well, I’ll trade Smith to Marchbank.

      14

      0
    2. I’ve got Smith too. No point in trading this week unless you’re facing a 0 on the field. Once we see who’s on the bubble next week, we can make a better educated guess at the best def rookie to replace him. Right now, it’s anyone’s guess who will get a game in round 3 to start making us $$$!

      1

  13. All the Rookies are having a meeting early this week and having a good hard look at themselves. Standards need to be enforced. 80 needs to be the new 30

  14. I rolled the dice on a lot of returning players, having Sandy, Beams, O’Meara & Swallow in my side.

Thinking about trading Swallow for Heppell (got some spare cash). I would wait a week, but I need both trades next week for rookie juggling.

T/U Do it!! Heppell won’t be this cheap again, and will prove to be a year long keeper. Swallow is dicey anyway.

T/D Wait you idiot! Have some faith in your pre-season judgment for crying out loud!!

    14

    31
  15. As an experienced player, no trades for me. Lucky enough to not have Riewolt. Smith will go next week. And I’m Hoping Hanners improves

    6

    4
  16. No trades for me, how many times do you need to get burnt trading and trying to catch last weeks point.

The Big Roo, I have but holding, in it for the long haul and not wasting a trade unless he is really our for 6 weeks.

My forward Line is pretty Solid for week one. Roo, JJ, Miller, Roughy, Nan, Houston, Hannan and Eddy Bench so can cover.

More worried about the back line what a disaster that turned into for Rookies.

Rookies: You have to take the good with the bad, although the majority were bad, leave the rookies another week then make some correction for Cash.

    4

    5
    1. I’m undecided. Usually wouldn’t trade if it’s only a week although it has opened up an opportunity for structure correction.

My FWD line is rather sturdy (well was at least for this week), so I might take this opportunity and use the 1 trade to turn him into Adams/Shaw to beef up the Defence to 4 premiums with Marchbank and Hampton.

  17. G’day legends I started with hickey at r1 I’m already regretting this after a dismal 44 points on the weekend! Should I downgrade Dahlhaus to Steele and upgrade hickey to Gawn!? Feel bad burning two trades but I feel it must be done!
    Tu go for it
Td hold for one week and see what happens

    3

    34
      1. I’d hold Hickey for at least another week. I didn’t watch the game thanks to the silly scheduling but Hickey was up against the best in the business last week….

  18. I too have Smith, and while it would be as simple as trading him via DPP links to a Hannan and putting Hibberd in Smith’s place on the Defensive bench, it’s only week 1. Going to hold off trades this week as I have no LTI concerns elsewhere thankfully (touch wood).

If Hannan does what he did in Rd 1 for Rd 2, then I’ll likely look to pull the trigger next week.

  19. Bang Bang!
Want two trades available to secure the best rookies next week
Roo and Swallow out for Heppell and M Hannan

Laird, Adams, Jones, McGrath, Tipper, Hampton
    Otten, Hibberd.

Heppell, J Kennedy, Fyfye, Treloar, Beams, Parish, SPP, O’Meara
    Barrett, Parfit, Florent

    Gawn, Sandi, WItts

Kennedy, Nankervis, Steele, McKernan, Hannan, Taranto,
    Turner, McCarthy

Next week options include taking WHE and Butler or Houstan in the Forwards to ensure the optimum cash generation possible
Heppell is a must have imo and Hannan is playing in a team on the rise playing Carlton next………….
If Parish does not fire up he will be traded up to Pendles and Tipper down to a cheaper performer.

    2

    2
    1. If Florent, Parfit, Barret, or Taranto are dropped I will keep Swallow if playing. Might decide to drop Florent either way……?

      1

      3
  20. So what do people think of McGrath? Looked great on the weekend but Poo in the JLT.
Have Rampe outlet for his solid play and 22 game concostancy and low and behold he breaks his arm at training.
I have no cash coz I squeezed in everyone I wanted, there are some guys around his price I like but don’t love so thinking bringing in McGrath so that next week depending on form I can possibly swap your Sympkin types for you WHE or Steele types, or just bank some cash.
Oh and I have Marchbank already

TU bring in McGrath and have cash
TD brink in someone around $460k or like a Z Jones or something.
    Cheers!

  21. Current team, swapped out Jack Steven for Dyson Heppell.

DEF: Laird, Shaw, Adams, Stewart, Hampton, Otten (Hibbered, EVW)
MIDS: Heppell, Pendles, Danger, Kennedy, Fyfe, Beams, SPP, JoM (Barrett, Pickett, Wigg)
    RUCKS: Grundy, Sandi (Strnadica)
FWD: Franklin, Dahlhaus, Nankervis, Roughie, Taranto, Butler (Parfitt, Eddy)

    Scored 2217 in Round 1. 140k left.

Now my question is.. is 140k left in the kitty too much. Or should I save it for a rainy day? I am pretty happy with my team at the moment though.

    5

    3
    1. No 140k lets you upgrade EVW or Hibberd to Marchbank. I am looking at keeping a similar amount on hand for if Marchbank can back up his round 1 result.

It would also allow an Eddy to Hannan or Wigg to Hannan via Parfitt swap.

Good plan, but don’t rely on 150 out of Hep D every week.

      4

  22. So I was having a look at a replacement for Smith with a remaining kitty of $99K and it’s only giving me 3 players who played a rd1 game who I can afford and don’t have already……McGrath, Kelly & Macreadie….I mean how??

    1

    1
    1. McGrath would be the only one I would consider and would be waiting a week regardless.

I knew rolling with a 4 premium defence + Marchbank was a must.

Did I do it? No 😥

  23. ‘Trade Talk’ might not be the ideal thread to post this in, but it seems to be attracting the most eyeballs (or at least the most comments), so I’m posting it here anyway…

I’ve got a horrible feeling that this is going to be the year that Guns & Rookies fails us. As a strategy it is, by definition, dependent on having a reasonable supply of rookies who a) play, and b) score. This year we have a shortage of the former, and an extreme shortage of the latter. A lot of the rookies that most of us have picked will, if they continue to score as they did in round 1, make little to no money. This is really bad.

I know we are only one round into the season, but below I have posted a hindsight team. That is, the sort of team that we probably should have picked. It is mostly concerned with structure (in particular, minimising its reliance on rookies). Obviously, the premiums could be swapped out for others, but this is just an example:

    DEF: R. Laird, J. Lloyd, Z. Tuohy, Z. Jones, C. Marchbank, A. McGrath (C. Hampton, T. Stewart)

    MID: P. Dangerfield, S. Pendlebury, J. P. Kennedy, J. Selwood, N. Fyfe, D. Beams, M. Murphy, S. Powell-Pepper (S. Petrevski-Seton, J. Barrett, B. Parfitt)

RUC: A. Sandilands, J. Witts (Lukehole)

    FWD: L. Dahlhaus, J. Roughead, T. Nankervis, J. Steele, W. Hoskin-Elliott, K. Turner (D. Butler, D. Houston)

    Remaining salary: $87,600

With Dangerfield as captain (he wasn’t the best player in the team, but he’s the one most of us would have picked), this team would have scored 2407 points this week, ranking it equal-45th in the competition (the highest was 2472). Hell, with JJK instead of Dahlhaus, and with him as captain instead of Dangerfield, it would have scored 2536, and would sit comfortably on top of the leaderboard.

Obviously, the team wouldn’t score like this every week, but, even with rather conservative assumptions, it should average over 2100 each week. With more optimistic assumptions, it could average well over 2200, or even 2300 (more if you picked the right captain). In addition to scoring well, the mid-pricers and premium-rookies on the field would increase substantially in value, and the rookies on the bench would all make a fair bit, too.

As an aside, I should point out that the price of the on-field players in this team is $8,857,000, and would therefore be eligible for the SCT Dead Team League (sadly, the team that I sent in was not as good as this). But I digress.

Every year, we are told not to start too many mid-pricers, and that Guns & Rookies is the way to go. Most years, this advice turns out to be correct. This is not most years. I could be proven wrong, but there is little doubt in my mind that the person who wins the overall competition this year will have started out with a team not dissimilar to the one posted above.

For the rest of us, it’s going to be a long season.

    15

    2
    1. Indeed. I was not joking when I wrote about the Cow-pocalypse. Well, I was joking when writing, but not joking about it existing. I fear it does exist and we’re in for an interesting time. I’m not sure how bad it will be, but we will know better in a few weeks.

The very surprising on field results do make me wonder if the whole week is weird somehow.

Usually the GnR quickly catches up to Mid-priced madness. This year it looks like it will slowly catch up to it. And maybe not at all.

      5

      0
      1. Sadly, I suspect that it will be ‘not at all’. GnR catches up because the rookies get upgraded to premiums. This year’s rookies don’t look like they’ll make anywhere near enough money for that to happen.

For once in my life, I sincerely hope that I am wrong, but I’m not holding my breath.

        2

        2
    2. More or less predicted this, we knew rookies were hard come by this season, I started with 11 Midpricers. I’ve always gambled and started with a few, but never this many. So far so good. Maybe 1 trade this week and two next, then sit tight for two weeks.

      6

      1
  24. Not a fan of round 1 trades especially trading out premos, but I am not settled on Grundy and feel as though these trades will help structure the side better, and for cash growth. These trades will leave me with 130k to possibly upgrade a Pickett or Eddy to a WHE next week depending on how they score this week of course

    Out: Grundy(Nank into the rucks)
    In: Steele(F4)
    Out: J.Smith
In: Marchbank(D4) pushes Hibberd to the bench

    TU: Yes
    TD: No

    6

    13
  25. T/U: Keep Nroo and Roughie

T/D: Trade in JJK Kennedy and Steele (for nroo and roughie)

Comment: just do one of the trades (reply with which one) or other suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks heaps guys

  26. Due to real life issues, I didn’t have as much time to spend on research before round 1 as I would have liked. Was put off Dusty due to his non-DP status, but now thinking I’ve made a mistake with some mid-pricers. With some salary left, I’m planning to do the following trades:

    Byrne-Jones to Marchbank in DEF
    D. Swallow to Dusty in MID

I need to do something this week, as I have J. Begley as a non-playing rookie in the FWD line that I would like to correct next week. I know trades are gold, blah, blah, blah but Dusty could be worth 35k more after round 3 and be much harder to acquire.

    17

    4
      1. I sense sarcasm but Carlton is his lowest averaging side to score against. Will be playing his heart out for a hefty contract!

        1

        0
  27. Why hold onto Smith if he’s out for near the season esp if you already have a permanent loop hole player? A trade for him now is the same as a trade for him in 2/3 weeks!

    3

    3
    1. Disagree, Lonners!

If you trade him this week, the player you get may get injured or get dropped before the r3 price increase!

If you keep him this week, use him as a loop hole this week & trade him for a definite r3 starter generating you a guaranteed $50-70k+ price increase depending who you get.

      1

      0
  28. I’m going to move on Nick Riewoldt. Have Preuss in R3, so don’t have easy ruck cover.

    Do I:

T/U: Take Nankervis and pocket the cash
    T/D: Get Rockliff via DPP

    15

    8
  29. Riewoldt to Steele this week and bank the cash.

Next week Hibberd/Smith to McGrath and my worst mid/forward rookie to Witts via DPPs (assuming Witts and McGrath score 80s again).

    3

    3
      1. Sounds like you know what you wanna do!

Lock in Buddy, can’t go wrong. 125 on the weekend in a losing team in the rain.

        6

        0
  30. I am going to trade NRoo as I don’t think he will be out that long, but will be stuck down deep forward for a few weeks as they nurse him back. Also getting rid of J Smith.

    T/U: Hannah and Taylor Adams
    T/D: WHE and Touhy

    Thanks!

    8

    13
  31. TU NRoo straight to Franklin/Kennedy
TD NRoo to Steele and bank the cash

Already have 100k in the kitty but the rookies are looking achey shakey

    5

    9
    1. Riewoldt to Buddy this week, wait a week to trade out J Smith.

No reason to wait to replace your injured premium!

      6

      0
  32. I’ve got Joel Smith and he’s out the door this week.

Who do people feel is the best money generating option down back out of Andrew McGrath, Harrison Marsh or Zac Jones?

I know McGrath is the cheapest but has already been flagged as getting weeks off here and there. I haven’t seen the Sydney game to be able to make a call on the other two.

    1

    1
  33. Roo and Simpkin > Steele and WHE

Bank enough cash so that next week I can upgrade Otten to McGrath, and possibly Mills to Laird (unless I absolutely have to jump on Hannan pending another big score).
