Uncharted Territory – Round 7

Written by The Salamander on April 30 2021

Anyone watching the football this year will have noticed that North Melbourne is pretty easy to play against, and that the Western Bulldogs are really hard. This translates into SuperCoach-land the way you might expect:

The above chart doesn’t tell us much about the specifics, though. For example, who is easy to move the ball against? Who denies their opposition uncontested possession?

To try and answer some of these questions, I’ve broken down each team’s aggregate scoring for the year, both for and against, and plotted it below:

NOTE: These scores are unscaled. Open in a new tab to view full size.

Hopefully that’s at least somewhat enlightening.

It doesn’t tell us everything I’d hoped it might – like what positions do well against which teams, for example. I haven’t got time for much else today, but since key forwards are a thing in SuperCoach now, I thought I might leave you with this:

M50 Percentage – a pretty good proxy for “who’s easy/hard for key forwards to play against?”

The takeaway: field key forwards against the Kangaroos. Don’t field key forwards against the Demons.

Noticed any interesting patterns in the charts above? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Thanks for your efforts

It’s impossible to identify patterns without the actual data.

Opposition marks inside 50 also includes the cross field kicks and kicks backwards retaining possession so, that stat doesn’t really have any value unless you can identify the opposition ‘intercept’ marks inside 50

    1. Forgive me if I’ve misunderstood what you’re saying here, but that’s actually not what that stat is. These are marks the opposition takes inside their attacking 50, not marks in the opposition’s back 50.
